At seventeen (decades ago) I picked it up and read it on my own, not for school. I loved the story, lots of teen angst and drama. The last bit about the ceiling left an impression.
I love a book’s ability to reach out and grab at your own specific temperament! But the further I get from my teens the less an effect angst and ennui have on my reading 😂
I’ve never read the book, but I did see the mini series. However, the only thing I remember about it was that it starred Gemma Arterton 😂 what that says, I don’t know 🤷♀️ I did like you’re review of it tho
I did not like this one, either. But I found it funny that what you dislike about Hardy is what I disliked about George Eliot when I read Silas Marner recently. Now overall, I really liked that book, but there was definitely unnecessarily wordy sentences sprinkled throughout that made me roll my eyes and wonder if I should attempt another book by her.
You won’t need to view much more of this channel to witness me waxing lyrical about Ms Evans! Please please go to Middlemarch first. But I’ve also read and reported on ‘Romola’ earlier in my Victober series where I conceded that she seemed a little wishy washy at times.
Yeah I was not a fan of this book when I read it a year or so ago. It was as if Hardy delighted in bringing such needless suffering to his characters and he made me complicit in his sick fantasy just by reading it.

It's one of the great prose tragedies in English. And a key transition work to modernism.
I found the same and also study this for “A” level Joe. You also have the same edition of Sherlock Holmes as I do 😃
I'm thundering through Holmes as we speak. The bulkiness of our volume makes it brilliant for annotation!
All the tragicality with this one!

From memory, I really enjoyed the series. I think Eddie Redmaine/Redmayne might have been in there too!
_Tess_ sits on my shelf, unread. The more reviews I hear, the less I'm inclined to read it.. 🤷🏼♀ Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
It’s something you ought to get to but don’t feel that you’re ignoring something brilliant.
You give theater kid energy
You know what it’s like when those lights come down!

What delight? It's a tragedy - Tess is a character of immense strength.
