This comment is kind of late, but the song was also a tribute to the Sewol Ferry tragedy about a year before besides what was already mentioned. So multiple meanings.
And them being trapped in those boxes reminds me the most of the sinking that every time I watch the MV I think of it. Just because it’s so visual even though the lyrics also perfectly encapsulates it. Also, probably why it outwardly seems religious because like you said when things are really bad many people end up praying even if they’re not religious. And in the case of the passengers, they were literally in a situation where they might die so it makes sense. Plus, with tragedies in general, we often see online people say they’ll pray or they’re in their prayers like the lyrics “I pray for you.”
But, a brief summary of it if you don't know and want to know, it happened in April 2014 when the ship started sinking because the overloading of cargo as well as the multiple right turns. The crew ordered everyone to stay put, which was mostly made up of students from Danwon High School (325 of the 476 passengers), and did not change it until something like 40 minutes later even as water started to fill the passenger compartments and even as the captain was leaving the ship.
304 people on board died (including 5 missing) as well as 7 others died (in the rescue search). There is a lot more information about what happened afterwards like the criticism towards the government and what happened during the investigation.
But yeah, I think maybe more than their struggles and the tribute, I think it’s there to be a general sense of hope for the listener because like you said things seem to work out afterwards.

Thanks a lot for reacting to FT Island. They are really talented. Sadly they are underrated despite all the trajectory they have.
Again, thanks for your reaction. 👏🏼

Omg thank for reacting to one of my two ultimates groups of all time FTisland, they are so talented, sadly enough they are not so popular as they deserve even if they are around since 2007! Please also give a try to Wagakki band's homura+akatsuki no ito (this is jrock/folk rock though) stage you 'll love them i am sure!

Here are some very interesting facts about "Pray": Even though the song has an overt religious theme, the lead singer Lee Hong Gi is actually NOT a believer of any religion. However, the founder and owner of the South Korean label that F.T. Island is a part of (FNC Entertainment) is a devout Christian. Lee Hong Gi said that when he was being trained in singing at FNC, the owner forced Hong Gi to go to church every Sunday. Considering that Rock music is not popular in South Korea especially the heavier it gets, I wonder if making the lyrics openly religious was sort of a trick to get the owner of FNC to use the track as that album's main single and to get a music video for it rather than it being a B side which is how almost all of F.T. Island's heavier songs get treated in South Korea compared to Japan where bands can get as heavy as they want with Rock/Metal and still be mainstream. For example, Shadows from F.T. Island is a Japanese release.
F.T. Island made their debut in 2007. When the track "Pray" and the album it's from "I Will" was released in 2015, Hong Gi and the other members of F.T. Island said that it was the first time in South Korea they got to make the kind of music they actually wanted to be making which means heavier and more Rock oriented like what they do in Japan but they weren't allowed to. Maybe that's what the music video for Pray is based on. In the video, all the F.T. Island members are trapped in boxes and also in one enclosed glass box while wearing clothes fit for Rock/Metal. They then get surrounded by these ghouls in suits laughing at them being trapped. They only get to break free when Hong Gi screams in Rock/Metal fashion and the music gets the heaviest. That could be the meaning or maybe not. 🙂
In any case, it's still the situation that almost all of their heavier Rock tracks gets pushed as B sides in South Korea. It has though given F.T. Island the unique characteristic of having such a wide range of sound in their discography and they've proven that they are so talented that they can kill it within any sub-genre of Rock. So yeah, they are extremely underrated. A shame that your Italian fans don't check out these F.T. Island reactions. They are missing out on an amazing band.

Sadly, most. Look at the views of this and other F.T. Island reactions he did on this channel compared to any of the Italian artists he reacts to. It's sad they keep avoiding these.

Nope. Hong Ki said that the song Pray was dedicated to the victims of the Ferry. True Hong ki has no beliefs and he was forced to go to church when he was 16 but he has always been a rebel and he found the way to stop him from forcing him.
True they were and are on a tug of war creatively with FNC, they even fought publicly on tge radio, they would never let go of Hong Ki, it would be crazy. Everyone wants him. They even held them hostages after 7 years, but he is too good.

@@Lupita311 "Nope. Hong Ki said that the song Pray was dedicated to the victims of the Ferry. "
I'm not sure why you think it can only be about one thing. While the lyrics can be interrupted as *partly* (key word "partly") being inspired by the Sewol Ferry incident, nothing in the actual music video is. Nothing. FT Island were very clear before the release of "I Will" that it was about them finally getting to do in South Korea the music they wanted to do. And in the music video you have them trapped in a glass box dressed in Rock/Metal clothes while being surrounded by ghouls specifically wearing business suits and only get to break free when Hong Gi screams in Rock fashion destroying the glass box and also blowing away the ghouls in suits who are covering their ears from all of the Rock music that is now being heard. The symbolism is very clear. That imagery and sequence has nothing to do with the Sewol Ferry incident.
I still think that making the song have a religious theme was either a trick by Hong Gi to get the song released as the main single or perhaps a compromise with the FNC owner (e.g. "Make it about God and I'll you let you have a Hard Rock main single"). It's difficult to believe that a non-religious person like Hong Gi randomly and out of nowhere wanted to make a song have a very prominent religious message unless there was another motivation behind it especially since he voiced in public that he didn't like being forced to go to church by the FNC owner.

I noticed when you spelled their name in the video title like this "FTISLAND" the vids had higher views. When you post their name like this "FT ISLAND" or like this "F.T.ISLAND" the views were lower. Try editing the title of the last three FT Island reactions you did to "FTISLAND" to see if that helps with the views on these. 🙂

Rock in Korea is not very appreciated. Plus their agency doesn't promote them. FNC sent them to Japan after being successful in Korea to get started the conquering of that market, they started doing heavy rock influenced music in Japanese, check their album NWU is amazing. When they brought them back to Korea 3 years later the fans moved on to other groups. The agency wanted them to go back to be sweet and idol like, the way Idols act with clean images and Hong Ki and the other nembers who by then were composing music and writing lyrics refused to go back to being sweet. They just wanted to do music. They did three albums and by the 7th year the contract was over the agency told them that they could leave but one exmember was sti under contract and he had to stay, so they sign for 7 years again with the clause that they will do their music and the agency would give them songs and they would choose to do them or not. They had a very public fight where the CEO called Hong Ki despicable and he called the radio to tell his side of the story.. Their album with Pray came out then Where is the truth pure rock. Including take me now and out of love. Fans don't support rock so their 10 anniversary album is perfect and to me tge best of 2017 with a mix of styles. Then a mini album with two songs by the agency Sumner Night Dream which is fantastic and Lee Hong Ki's Paradise which was a Japanese song in Korean. Three other songs and before military service Zapping with a mix of songs it is beautiful.
If we talk about Japanese music well, they are fantastic. Shadows, to the light, Aqua, Tornado, Fish, Morning coffee, Last love song Vequtiful, Be Free, black chocolate, primavera and many, many more... Sorry this is my favorite topic, I have been a fan since 2007 I have every album they have release and I went to their concert in NYC, it was amazing but the one in California rocked!
