They have a fairly complex display that shows door ajar status, brake lamp failure, etc. They even had a mechanical service indicator section that would start green and then red when services were due. It could be reset with a key!
They were optional until the late 90s on certain vehicles. I don't think they were mandatory until '96 when dual airbags were made standard on all passenger vehicles
