I Ate Once a Day for a Month, See What Happened to Me

  • Can you eat just one meal a day? The human body can survive without a bite of food for up to 3 weeks. Of course, it’s a different story with water; you wouldn’t last more than 3 or 4 days without it! You and I both know that people are expected to eat 3 full meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Depending on how filling those meals are, you may squeeze in a few snacks here and there. It usually takes about 4 hours after each meal for your belly to start making those too-often-than-not embarrassingly monstrous growls, reminding you that it’s time for your next meal!
But with different diets and fasting gaining popularity, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen to my body if I ate just one meal every day for 30 days. I did it, and here’s what I got out of it!
    TIMESTAMPS:
What the one meal a day diet is 1:44
The pros of this diet 2:38
The cons of this diet 4:05
How I felt after the 30 days 5:30
What a number of studies have shown 6:17
    #diet #onemealaday #weightloss
    Music by Epidemic Sound www.epidemicsound.com/
    SUMMARY:
    - You eat just one meal a day. There aren’t too many strict guidelines to this diet. You can essentially eat any foods you want and as much as you want, as long as it’s during your one singular meal of the day.
    - Unlike a lot of other diets, there are no special ingredients involved and no annoying calorie counting. If you want French fries, have French fries! If you’re craving a big bowl of spaghetti, go for it!
    - If weight loss is a goal of yours, it’s important not to overeat during your one meal since it can disrupt the diet’s ability to help you maintain a steady drop in pounds.
    - After trying it for a couple of days, I found that my body quickly adjusted to this way of eating, and my appetite really wasn’t that raging. This must be because my stomach probably shrank after a few days, so I felt satisfied with just one meal a day.
    - For the first couple days, my stomach was definitely feeling hunger pangs. It started with stomach growls and ended with painful cramping.
    - For the first week, I just wanted to lie on the couch and Netflix and chill all day long. My energy was super low, and I felt so lethargic.
    - After the 30 days, I found that I’d actually dropped a few pounds! I felt pretty awesome not only because I’d gotten leaner and felt healthier, but I was also really proud of myself for sticking to a diet that I easily could’ve given up on.
    - One of the main concerns I found online was the fact that women and men respond differently to this type of intermittent fasting. Women have a stronger need for iron in their diet.
    - I also read up on different studies. One of them was conducted in 2017 by researchers at the University of Saskatchewan. They found that the one meal a day diet can be helpful for people suffering from type 2 diabetes since it helps with weight loss and reducing blood sugar levels.
    - Other studies have shown that it can really help increase the lifespan in people with obesity.
    - It just a super specific thing that each person should check with their doctor to see if they can do it safely. A lot of people swear by it, and I’m happy with the weight loss results I got.

In my thirties, the one meal a day plan, eating everything in sight, worked well, allowing me to loose 60 pounds in 8 weeks. I was thrilled! Doing this again in my fifties, did nothing for me, except to maintain what weight I was, until I experimented and filled up once a day with nothing but fish and a fruit or vegetable. Now, in my late 60's, the five bite diet works even better, under a doctor's care. Coffee or tea for breakfast, and five bites of food for lunch and five bites for dinner. I am loosing rapidly. That's my experience. If I want to, I can switch to fish and a fruit or vegetable, with medium speed weight loss.

I dislike the five bite diet that I have been on, with the guidance of my doctor, recommended by him. Breakfast is coffee or tea with nothing in it, no sweetener. For lunch, 5 bites of anything, dinner the same. Water, tea, coffee, free anytime. Loss of 5 to 7 pounds a week, worked well. Just today, I stopped it, because of how uncomfortable it is to do. At least I'm 8 pounds lighter.

I used the one meal a day during the start of the Pandemic, as with being restricted to staying at home I found eating once a day was enough to sustain me, and lost quite a significant amount of weight without even trying to. I have to say though I believe supplementing with Garcinia, CLA, Forskolin, & Lipo6 helped me stay disciplined without getting bent out of shape mentally. Once the lockdowns lifted and I was called back to work and I could go to the gym again I tried staying to the one meal rule but it was impossible. So every other “work” day I switch to only one meal a day or two meal day. My weekends I stuck to the one meal day. When I’m on my one meal day it is basically at noon I eat. When it’s a two meal day it’s a big breakfast and a very light dinner. I use to easily border at 220 to 225 now I barely pass going 210. I also take a multi vitamin & a probiotic supplement.

I’ve been eating like this for over 20 years! My friends are always wanting to go eat and they talk about how picky and little I eat but I always eat a meal every day and that seems to be all my body requires. I don’t have many cravings for anything eating this way, except my chocolate milk which is high in protein and also helps you if you feel a little hungry.
Just remember if you take vitamins, take them with your meal because they work through absorption and only happens in the intestines along with food. Otherwise vitamins are pretty useless. Also I’m healthy, I never go to the doc but many many elderly people in my life have said the key to longevity is to stay away from the doctor! So true, I believe them.

And every day I ate the same thing, basically, 2 items. Some days it was 2 cheese burgers and the other days it was a cheese burger and a banana split. This went on for 4 months. I went down to 160 and always felt fine, like always, maybe a little more agile, but always seemed to have lots of energy, no ill effects at all. I've started the OMAD diet when i was 14 yo....in 1974! Instinctively, because it was absolutely not a trend. I always found the 3 meals a day thing was over eating, time consuming and belonged to an agricultural way of life ( for farmers who started working physically at 5am!). Also at this young age, i could see the health issues with eating 3x a day +snacks and our sedentary way of life. I'm 61 and have no health issues whatsoever, I have a normal weight ( 5'4" -61 yo female- 135 pounds) and I think my days are more open to other activities than managing meals all day!

I tried the OMAD diet for 40 days. I ate mostly the same thing, basically to make certain that the caloric intake was the same...and ended up losing about 23 lbs. It was easier than reducing calories over multiple meals...but the biggest benefit was that even after 6 months later, I have not gained any of the weight back, even after returning to my "normal" diet and eating frequency. Amazing!!

Been working for 7 days now on building a bike with all these music speakers and gadgets, from 7 am till 10 pm. I have this huge meal at 10pm, and sleep way better, go to the bathroom way quicker, energy levels jus fine. All I have during the day is 2 coffees, and then plenty of water. It works!-

I have been doing this for 5 years. Started in high school. Too stressed to eat breakfast, too loud to eat lunch in cafeteria. It actually made me gain weight because I ate more than I needed when I could, of course, once I was out of high school and worked from home, my weight has been relatively stable as nothing is stopping me from eating more than once if I want to, just me and how convenient it is to just have to eat once. If you’re less strict about it and have the safety net of being able to eat more if you get hungry, then you will probably be more successful. Non of that “I can’t eat later so I need to overstuff myself now”

Also make sure to work out a bit because, once you get off you’re regular eating schedule and shorten your amounts, you can get sick. So be careful but enjoy!

Some questions for the poster: 1) did you eat at the same time every day, or vary the time? If the same time every day, what was it? If different times, what were they, and in what order day-by-day? 2) Did you work out a schedule of meal plans for the entire period ahead of time, or at least maybe week-by-week? 3) how did you construct and vary your meals? Which of the food groups were represented in each daily meal, and did you vary the combination from day-to-day? Did you eat a 'normal' -sized portion of each food group represented? 4) how many pounds did you actually lose? 5) Did you return to a multi-meal diet after the 30 days, or have you continued this indefinitely?
I would be especially interested in any meal plan you made, day-by-day (if you kept records). It would seem to me that would be almost a requirement.

    • @revluvv

Great questions. I found trying to keep the same “window” each day worded better for me. I also found that eating between 12-3 was best for me as it put my meal in the middle of my waking time. I don’t eat the same thing every day. I think that would be miserable. I do stick to a keto plan with respect to the kinds of food. It seems to yield the best results. One thing that was not mentioned was the elevation in mood. After a few days I seem to have a sense of well being. Kind of weird side effect. I was able to get a lot of information on the science of the OMAD plan for other top people like Dr.Eric Berg. The results are positive and I look forward to keeping it part of a healthy lifestyle

When I've tried eating lunch and dinner, that's when I start gaining weight. I've been doing this for around 20 years. It works for me! I will say that I'm not a foodie type nor do I enjoy cooking, I'm just not obsessed about food. So it maybe easier for a person like me.

what interests me the most is: at what time did you eat your 1 meal ?
Because I used to fast all day and eat at night and my thyroid got so lazy and I got fatter and fatter. Now that I eat a big breakfast or lunch (I alternate) and eat a dinner too, I weigh less. I had a friend and she could go for hours without food all day but eat a lot at night, and she too got so big. Now she eats during the day (follow the sun diet which means when the sun is highest you can eat the most, so small breakfast big lunch small dinner and lots of water between meals) and she has lost a loooot of weight, eating more than ever

The biggest problem I experience with OMAD is constipation, although I always drink plenty of water and I eat a high fiber Vegan diet. For this reason, I now eat a small bowl of fruit with my tea in the morning. I add some plant based home made plain curd to my fruit bowl for probiotics. For lunch I eat a raw salad with no grains, but with a little cooked or sprouted beans, and I eat my main meal of cooked food in the evening. This way, I have been loosing some weight. I don't experience constipation, and indeed, I have adapted this way of eating for life. I live in tropical climate where one does not need a lot of calories. Indeed, in cold climate it may prove to be difficult to stick to this pattern of eating.

I recently switched from 3 to 2 meals a day and I had similar symptoms of stomach growling for few days but am now used to it too. I now eat somewhere around 11 and 5 pm. Also learned that we often confuse thirst with hunger and keep putting in plenty of food, so drinking water is much better to check whether it was a pang of hunger or thirst. So mine happens to be like intermittent fasting, also recently learned about insulin resistance from "why we get sick." Highly recommend to people who wanna know how what you put in your mouth affects your body.

I used to live like this constantly because my jobs were so busy and demanding. This is also known as "intermittent fasting" and is a medically recognized way to manage weight. In the last few years I've gotten away from it and surprise, surprise 60 extra pounds have found me. I have a 6'2" frame and that 60lbs makes a huge difference. Heading back in that direction for sure because I was a lot happier with myself at 185. It really does work not only for weight loss but for maintenance. You just can't let the "lunch crowd" sabotage you too often. Once you get into this mode you start to feel light and energized during the day, not bogged down by a bunch of food your body is trying to deal with while your still trying to be active. I will say though that once you get entrenched in this type of eating habit you will become very sleepy within an hour of your meal. So prepare for that.

I am 48 years of age and its the best i have felt since i was in my mid twenties. I usally work the night shift so its hard for me to eat 3 meals a day coz i sleep most of the day. A couple of hrs after i wake i will go for an hours walk, then i will do 1 hour in the gym. An hour after the gym i will settle down to my OMAD. Eggs, chicken, fish, turkey, salad, tuna and dairy products are the types of foods i eat. For the first week or so i found it quite hard and had to be strong, but after that i got used to it and now its the norm. Good luck to all.

For losing weight I prefer this more than eating a bunch of small meals because those wouldn't satisfy me and instead just make me want to eat more.
