  • South of Lisbon is the port city of Setúbal, which has not been talked about or thought about very much until really recently. I live in Setúbal and I have mixed feelings when I see this type of videos. If on one side I really get glad that the city gets known, on the other hand I just think on how bad it gets for locals when tourists come in at an high rate - housing prices will continue to shoot up (more than doubled over the last 4 years) and gets impossible for local people to live here...and if "setubalenses" don't live here, you won't get "that feeling".
Anyway, it's a nice place indeed. Cheers!

It starts with inflation , rent , then overpopulation , pollution , then , crime , drugs , unemployment! And this will end with another rush somewhere ! Soon we’ll have to move to Mars! The ‘Lisbonites ‘ are moving to Setúbal and other smaller cities because of rise in costs caused mostly by expats , moving in to Lisbon at record breaking speeds from England , Germany , France , China, USA, etc ! Who can blame them ! Everyone is looking for paradise but for the locals it’s not about retiring in the sun , it’s about day to day survival !

Too bad you guys didn´t showcase Tróia and Arrábida range, for me, it´s impossible to think of Setúbal without thinking of Tróia and Arrábida !!
Also, the commuter takes about 1h from Setúbal to Lisbon but there´s no risk of catching traffic on it, it has comfortable seats with AC on every carriage and crossing the 25th April bridge on the train and enjoying the view for me almost makes it worth the ride.

The city of Setubal and surrounding areas (Palmela, Arrabida, Quinta do Anjo) are very well establish for decades among the portuguese people for wonderful weekends, beach day out or holidays. Fantastic flat sea to swim, amazingly good sand, vibrant vibe all around (not sure now with pandemic and restrictions) food heaven places all prices and ranges and list goes on and on. So, when you guys say it is an upcoming area, that`s not true unless you talking about mass tourism. I do hope tourism keep visiting the area but at moderate rate.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 роки тому +1

If we're being honest, Diogo, it's probably tourist that are raising the rents more than expats. What we're seeing is that foreign investors (that don't live here) are purchasing properties for the AL market, which could be rented to a mix of tourists and expats renting for the medium term, but nightly rates provide greater ROI and will allow people to make more money if they charge higher prices, which is making the market a bit crazy. At least in Porto (were we understand the market better), AL permits are being really limited by government regulation. The puzzling thing is that taxes on long-term rentals is higher for the property owner than AL so it makes more sense to want to have an AL than a long-term rental.

Thanks for sharing this video. It is always nice to hear good things about your country. I also lived abroad a biga part of my life. I think Portugal has good and bad things, but maybe something that I think it is important to mention is that portuguese people are very sympathetic, they always say hello and help if you ask for... The food is nice, but I think you should check seafood like "Ameijôas" or "Sapateira" or "Massada de Peixe", these dishes are cooked in a portuguese way, which you might like. I also agree with the car, it is easier to live with a car in Portugal, due to traffic, buses might get late, and via car you can enjoy amazing views like the ones provided when crossing the bridges.
Some places can be cheap if you know where to look, you can have lunch in Lisbon for 4 euros if you know the tricks, and there are many cofees, restaurants, bars and discos to enjoy.
If you like to live in a calm place without traffic and space, Setubal is nice. Another thing about Setubal is that in 2 minutes by car you can enjoy the forest and farm life, which is super calm, there are beautiful beaches if you go down the road to Algarve, some hidden by the trees. In Alentejo there are beaches that are so beautiful that you may relax you spirit, like the "Aivados" beach or "Zambujeira do Mar", the places where people from Libon pass the change of the year. The water is cold compared to the mediterranean sea, but one thing that I like is that you can work and study at the same time, or take online university courses.
You might find more english speaking people in the Algarve, the architecture there has some arabic influence and things are also calm. And the portuguese shopping centers have lots of things like cheap cinemas compared with the US.
I hope more people like you decide to move to this country and that you enjoy this country.
    Godspeed.

Over the years tourist have came and the prices of everything has been increasing more and more and that is really bad for us. You can visit but don´t leave here. 700€ for a T2 is too much, and it's because of tourist wanting to have a house in here that it became hard to have money for us, setubalenses, to afford a house, food and bills. The major of the population receive the minium wage (its way lower than 700€) so "just 700€" its a lot. And just a advice: don't show in the videos places with the wrong names, for exemple, the Jardim do Bonfim that you showed it was jardim da saúde.

Prices going up for locals because of foreigners unfortunately happens all over the world and I'm sorry for the people who have to suffer like that, but it's really not the foreigners' fault. Foreigners come to your country because your government feels it needs foreign investment to raise the standard of living for everyone, so your government invites them to come. If people have a problem with it they should contact your politicians and then maybe they will close the door to new people. 🙂

As a Portuguese now living in Canada and also who has lived and worked ( not only passing through as a short or medium term tourist ) in a few other countries , I’d recommend getting a local Portuguese person to be part of your vídeos , someone who can show you places and explain the things that you are missing ! Only thing that is completely wrong and miss informed is that, prices of our apartments for sure are not " low " , 10 years ago a T2 would cost around 300 euros, which is half the price its now for a good apartment. Due to tourism the prices went up so please don't tell people that this is affordable because the minimum wage is around 650-750, so you barely can even live properly if you are not a medium class person.

Focusing on the city gives a restricted view, the bigger picture here is the Setubal Peninsula. The coast road from Setubal to Sesimbra with the sea on one side and mountain covered in trees is spectacular. Sesimbra is a lovely town right on the beach. Further north is Caparica, it has a massive beach with a very long promenade (at least a few KLM’s), great for walking in the cooling breeze off the Atlantic. A great place for hiking and horse riding is the Parque Natural da Arrábida. The pousada in Palmela town has fantastic views by day and by night, you can see Setubal to the South right up to Lisbon to the north. Brilliant shopping centers or “forums” in Setubal, Montijo, Almada, Coina, Rio Sul. Of course Lisbon with everything it has to offer is just 40 mins away. In summary anywhere is a great location on this peninsula. I’m speaking from experience, our place is in Quinta do Anjo.

@@diogorodrigues747 what I mean is, at least SOMETHING comes in between S and T. It's not ST. At least a pause at minimum, if not a complete E. I'm in agreement with you.

eu acho que portugal esta todo a cair aos bocados, os preços absurdos, mas se os turistas pagam por isto pk devem gostar.

Very similar to Faro, not a bad thing, tho without the handy nearby airport.
