- I am so happy to bring you our first video in retirement! Today, we are doing Freeze dried garlic that was grown in the garden, also trying freeze dried wild flowers and freeze dried herbs (basil, cilantro). You will also learn how to make garlic powder. The water factor is minimal in all of these, but i am in a new, humid climate that may change the freeze drying system that i am used to. Will it take longer to freeze dry?

The seed idea should work because many types of seeds need to go through a freeze to sprout the next year. Also, it helps kill any bacteria that would ruin the seeds. I used to work in an Heirloom Seed Project at a museum and you have to dry the seeds fully to pack and use them in the next year, so freeze drying, I believe would be optimum as there is no moisture like when you are drying seeds on a screen.
About 10 years ago my brother brought me freeze dried whole garlic cloves he'd found at a Canadian farmers market. It's a delicious snack! Immediately became my favorite munchie.

Just a quick tip - Queen Anne's Lace is a wild variety of carrot. The root is smaller than grocery store carrots and it's white, but it's edible and tasty.

I'm running whole cloves now as an experiment . I happy to see they will turn out OK. Ty for all you do , these videos helped us alot .
I’m really curious about how the whole garlic does. I’d rather not have to chop or mince it all, but I’m also less interested in just making garlic powder.
Do you have a pharmaceutical or a home model?
Just tried roses on Valentine's Day for mom. The petals filled with water vapor and expanded at the tips like little balloons, but otherwise, they came out good. If drying flowers is your main use, then it might be something to talk to Harvest Right about making a different rack with wider spacing between the shelves. The petals shouldn't touch the top of the shelf or they flatten when dry.
With that sneeze you put the water right back :)

Great video. I got turned onto your videos when I purchased my HarvestRight freeze dryer. I purchased mine from Home Depot and am awaiting delivery. You had mentioned on this video that you were planning on freeze drying seeds to see if they can be rehydrated and germinated at a later date. I am a hydroponic grower (still new at it) and am prepping by harvesting my own seeds so I would be super interested in seeing if we can freeze dry seeds and rehydrate them with success. I appreciate all of the videos! I am learning as much as I can before my Freeze Dryer gets here. Coneflower (Echinacea) has wonderful health properties for cold and and flu. I grow a lot of it and my husband and I drink it as a tea. It boosts your immune system. People with auto immune disorder should use caution as activating their immune could be dangerous, but otherwise, it is good stuff. If your garlic makes scapes (goes to seed) it is hard neck garlic and that is normal. Good Job!!! Thank you for the information.
Nice video - thank you! Glad that you are settling into your new house and starting your new retirement adventure. I'd be curious to see if you can really stop working, even if you don't need to work. A lot of men struggle with that because they tend to define themselves by what they do and how much money they can make. But it sounds like you see this as a real opportunity and something to look forward to. Can't wait for the next video!
it depends what one would define as "work" i suppose. we will continue to fix up houses if one catches our eye and continue rentals because that is our passion. i will "work" on videos, i will "work" on our garden, i will "work" on projects (cars, antiques, houses etc. because it's what i love to do. 😄
You can a photo of a brides bouquet and then freeze dry the flowers and then reassemble the bouquet to last a lifetime of enjoyment🤗

Cut your scapes off the top when they do a complete curl and you can use that as garlic as well .

Flower bouquet for the wife
Another video a woman had made was that she wet her flowers before freeze drying and they were really colorful and pretty when she took them out vs the ones without water. The water dipped flowers won out..the others were dull and lost its full color... It was interesting. Maybe try that.

Carry a 5 gallon bucket with some water in it. Cut the flowers and put them straight into the water until you are ready. It will last days.

The first one you picked is a Queen Ann’s lace look a like called cartina (sp). The second one is called day lillies it is the old fashioned kind. I do not know the name of the third. For the cartina if you have a bucket of water with a 1/4 cup of bleach it hardens the plant
Queen Anne’s Lace is VERY similar to Hemlock which is extremely poisonous 🤷🏻♀️
Love the new home, glad you are doing so well! As I have been retired for some time, I found many many "hobbies" take up my time quite nicely.
After my parents retired, they said they feel busier in retirement than when they were working. I am kind of a busy body, so i should adapt well🎣
I find I constantly have a ‘high temp’ warning stating that it may take longer… we have really high humidity. This is even with a air exchanger, dehumidifier and a fan all running in the room with the freeze dryer. I guess that’s just part of living on the ocean in summer. I have to dump my dehumidifier every morning on my way out the door to work and again when I get home from work and sometimes once more before bed. My biggest concern is how quickly things start to get sticky when I go to package them after drying them.
I live in a dry climate and still get the temp warning!
Shit man you got to be sure about queens lace. It looks similar to yarrow which is perfectly fine. But also looks like western hemlock which will cause permanent and irreversible neurological damage in any dose. Do not mess around with that stuff. It looks very similar to a lot of Herbs and wild carrots.
How about freeze dried roasted garlic.

Does anyone happen to know the shelf life of garlic when it is freeze dried?
Could you please consider doing pad Thai? Chicken, shrimp, etc., any would be awesome! Thinking it might be great, only thing that concerns me is the oil.

Hi, I have discovered your videos just last week and found them to be very useful and thoughtfully done! Keep up the good work. I wanted to understand how much in weight will 1lbs of green leafy vegetable like Spinach or Kale come out to be once freeze dried? And will it reconstitute back to 1lbs if put in water for some time? Would you also know what happens to the active compounds like enzymes and polyphenols upon freeze drying and reconstitution?
the weight after reconstituting will be the same as before freeze drying. However, most greens will not reconstitute to the same consistency. What type of greens would you be freeze drying?
@@live.life.simple. Thank you for your response Brian. I plan to freeze dry Kale, Spinach, Basil, Chard, Broccoli and similar other greens. I plan to farm them in the Himalayas (high land organic pristine soil) and then bring them down to the plains. I see freeze drying as the only solution - since greens will not arrive very fresh if transported over long distances. Is it possible to freeze dry these greens - as green leafy vegetable instead of blending them & then freeze drying? And what would be the approx. weight of say 1lbs of spinach or kale after freeze drying? Have you tried freeze drying Spinach & Kale leaves - and measured how much of it is left in terms of weight after the freeze drying process? Would be happy to hear from you!!

Can I freeze dry sauerkraut?
I'm very curious and surprised not to see anyone else asking in the comments but DUDE! .... do the flowers still smell purdy after freeze drying?
It seems to take the smell away. This video was done in 2020 and now almost a year later, I just threw out the ones in this video so my wife could put some different ones in. Pretty cool

@@live.life.simple. The roses I did still smelled fresh for about 2 weeks after drying. Depends on the property of the scent oils I guess. I did mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches and they barely taste minty at all after drying, so the mint oil went with the water.
What temp should I freeze dry a bouquet of roses?
I've set the temp down to 110 from 125 degrees for doing fruit. So it will lengthen the dry time, but lessen the chance of damage to the flowers. Try not to let the blooms touch the bottom of the shelves as it will make a flat spot. For large blooms, we really need a custom rack to seperate the trays more.
Can a "home" model dry herbs or do I need a "pharm" ?

How long can the freeze dried garlic be viable without getting sticky?
We store ours in small jars and keep one in the kitchen. It doesn't soften at all even if in a jar for months with no seal. Garlic is one of my favorites.
My freeze dried garlic is coming out sticky/gummy. Any suggestions?
I would guess that you need to run the cycle longer. It should turn into super hard pieces if diced.
