Fantastic! I can't hardly wait to get my own primitive fishing tackle. I seen another way of tying the line to the spade hook but your way really simplifies it and I can see that it is quite secure. And I was surprised but just how secure the line can be attached to a blind eye hook. Thanks!
Now that was educational. I guess I always took it for granted that fish hooks were eyelet types. The way they were fashioned to the lines so simple. Looking forward to your next one. Thanks atb Opal
two ways to tie a hook in two days...you and stillwater. I had modded a take down pole afew summers ago but is too short and need a new one...you and afew others have made me rethink the kind of pole i like the way you have it set up and will more than like try to do the same this year....thanks for the view ATB Boreal
Boreal Woodsrunner Nice brother! Glad to hear it has you thinking this is about the purest kind of fishing you can do in my opinion, enjoy! make a video and show us
lol will have to .....but it will be off the phone hope it comes out well....cameras here are kinda high priced but i am sure i can find a flea market find :)
Hey Brian-- by far one of the best vids--- I learned allot in this one. I carry a survival fishing kit and encourage my buddies who do so to go out and catch fish on their gear as well. Very interested in trying the two hooks you discussed. Keep it up--- good stuff!
Great Vids as always Sir.. One question.. Couldn't you use a series of half hitches on either hook ?? That way you limit having to trim you line with using a snell..
Very excited to find your video! I am new to Rev War reenactment (although a 30 yr vet of CW) and was looking to really solidify my impression by adding fishing tackle to my private soldiers kit. Thank you making this video. Can you tell me where you got the wax linen thread, your hooks, and the other pieces of your tackle. Love how you showed how to tie the line to the hooks. Again, an invaluable piece of day to day life of the people of that time period. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks glad it helped you, hope it was enjoyable goggle dude google you will find what you need or go to my webpage snowwalkeroutdoors.weebly.com email me and I can build one for you
i like that blind eye hook setup. thinking of it as a leaderless hook change out. as for the way you tie the spade hook you can tie an standard eyed hook the same way. i also want to thank you for posting this info.. it was adsorbed as intended. and i will outfit my per altoid's tin with like items. and if i find lost gear in various states of disrepair it won't go to waist. unlike before.
Brian, In Steve's video He was using the waxed linen line as a leader, and he also talked about using deer sinew as the leader. As a Line itself he used a tarred bank line. Could a Hemp twine be used instead of the bank line? then also on the hooks How would one go about making these?
Galen Long Only on his hand lines bro if memory serve me correctly. You're gonna have to forge them if you're not gonna buy them, and then you have to get the temper right on them or they will break easily. I get stuff from Sam Hall, tell him i sent ya, there is a FB link in the description.
hey Brian, I know this is a little off topic but would you please direct me to the video of the leather canteen you made. I was thinking of making something similar to use as a shot pouch. thank you. Scott
Another enjoyable and informative vid Brian. I love this series!

Dapping is the term used for dropping flies to surface water.
Neils Dahlberg Good to know thanks!
Neils Dahlberg Also ---Horse-tails were used for lines for centuries ...
Yes they were of that I am familiar
As always, excellent history lesson and demo, Brian! On the linen material for the line, is that braided or woven for extra strength?
Survival Sherpa 3 ply braid bro
