Simracing is affordable if you don't get FOMO!
Most people don't make a living from it; it's a hobby. Some kit is worth investing in for immersion/comfort/enjoyment if you put the time in.
I've had a G920 for the last four years. It'll be nearly five by the time I get a Moza R3 (affordable DD).

Hope you can try both the R3 and R5, would be a shame if you find the FFB strength lacking over time. Went up from 5nm to 8nm myself, and really love the extra power. It just feels more like you are actually handling a 600 hp monster in your hands.
      Just love this hobby. 😃

Yea, even the non-direct-drive stuff that's up to like 300 can work for sim-racing for fun. - I mean, I use a T248 set, and even though I became aware of what could be better within about half a year, it works fine. - I'm still going to upgrade, because again I know what could be better, but I'm also actually not disappointed at all and even a bit torn about leaving some of its features behind. - That said, I got it for significantly less than the list-price. So yea, scoring deals is part of it as well. But there's no NEED to absolutely blow a pile of money.
To me, they're still videogames and I would never pay for a subscription for something like iRacing, just like I wouldn't for something like World of Warcraft. - But I just want it to be "realistic enough" as to make it "like I'm actually racing", being in complete control of these virtual vehicles, and that being the challenge of the game. - So I'm not the same type of car or racing enthusiast, but still, that also means not everyone needs exact replicas.

Same. Im a serious sim racer but Xbox X, im on my 2nd G920 so next year it's a Moza R3 definitely. A PC is too much hassle and priced out for me but im considering it for ACE.

@@duncani3095 If you dont want to spend any more, there is no reason for it. with a dd you get so much detail who cares if its 3 or 15nm. I can tell you that because i have a 32nm Base at home and im still not satisfied, i want more 😂

I agree with you when you say that sim racing doesn't have to be an exact 1 to 1 of the real life thing, however I think that when your paying lots of money for Iracing which is "the Most realistic sim" than I do believe that if the developers want to charge you that amount of money than they do have to try and make it as realistic as possible and when your laps in the rain are faster than the real life pole laps in the dry that is an issue.
I would say that that prices for MOST of the sim racing wheels and wheel bases are justified and the pedals are slowly going through a transition period where top of the line is going from load cell to active pedals which does create a big price gap. It is like when all of the companies fist started making direct drives and lots of people in the sim racing community were not impressed by the prices fanatec came through with there CSL DD and the DD1 and DD2 wheel bases making the market for direct drive cheaper.
(Thank you for posting good quality videos frequently Kireth) :)

this feels similar to flightsim hobbyists getting deep into military cockpit recreations including controls. You can have just as much fun with cheaper gear, but for some its not just the simulation software, its the environment they’re in. Just like you might spend money on triple monitors or better functional kit - which is your choice…. some people may want a real car dashboard or a replica wheel to give them something more intangible. thats also fine.

  • @NiklasAndersson7

Sim racing was actually cheaper than I thought - if you already have a decent gaming computer. Getting my feet wet was about 300 euros for a G923. I liked it, so I bought a Moza R5-bundle soon after for about 500 euros, then half a year later a h-shifter (150) and handbrake (100), a wheel for drifting (400), clutch (50) and a cheap simrig from NLR for about 300 euros on an Amazon flash-sale. So, my entire current setup, which is VERY decent, has cost me LESS than the wheel in the video. If we count the sunk-cost in my G923 it is about the same. So, sim-racing is cheap.

I'd say the sim racing market is fairly good right now. You can get a DD wheel like a Cammus C5 for $300 which will be much better than anything you could have gotten a few years ago in a similar price bracket.

If you look at the detail and quality of some of those wheels it makes perfect sense. Intricate but durable licensed stuff will cost you. It's practically the real thing. Like you argue: it's for a different crowd. You have 1. entry level belt drive peasants, 2. amateur & pro level gamers like yourself who only want the best performance, and 3. premium level elite who can pay for moving rigs, licensed wheels and Louis Vuiton bags and other fluff.

  • @FastFreddyATL
    @FastFreddyATL 20 днів тому +1

I have a solution to all this foolery, make the ULTRA budget version to EVERY high end wheel. Make it out of plastic like on the Moza KS wheel. All the stuff is cosmetic anyway. Now as far as things like active pedals, motion etc... things that actually make a difference, keep doing that R&D price gouge because it's worth it.
Imagine a GSI wheel made of carbon infused plastic for a quarter of the price. They'd sell so many that they'd make more money.
We are paying for the license and that sucks because a lot of people love the aesthetic of some of these wheels but can't justify the hefty price tag.

Apples and Oranges, expensive hardware is not equivalent to getting the physics right in software.... I totally agree with you on the hardware side... I disagree on the software side. The point Jimmy is making is valid if you do not take it too far. It is SIM racing, not just racing.

I recently picked up a Moza R3 bundle coming from a logitech g27, well worth it.
I see the more expensive wheels as a luxury product or if I really like the car the wheel is from.
Until I reach the limits of my current equipment I don't see the need to upgrade.

This kind of debate happens EVERYWHERE, like in computers (or the components like GPUs as everyone here probably knows), but also in like hi-fi audio, or guitar-equipment, things I happen to know of. - Surely one part of it in recent years is just the state of the world, but it's also just companies that are trying to really push the limits and seeing what they can get away with, usually because they're some of the biggest or whatever. - It always comes down to that "law of diminishing returns", so how much are you getting for your money and is it worth spending it compared to something cheaper that might do the job just as well. - Sure, you can splurge if you just have the money to spend, that's fine, but what also might be fine is something of half or a third of the price. - On top of that is finding good deals, which might not always be possible. But let's take my first "investment" as an example, the T248, which is kinda mid-range in the non-direct-drive segment I suppose, but I got it for like 100-150 less just because it was a returned product or whatever.
In any case, I think it's both kinda crazy but also amazing that they make what are basically replicas of real-car steering-wheels. I'm not even much of a car-person, even though I like them and whatever, but I also "get" that it excites certain people and they would love a replica of their favorite super/hyper-car or something like that. - But at the same time, they should keep making products in all price-classes to keep it accessible, as well as reasonable, and they do. So, no, it's not getting too expensive, because the most expensive products aren't even the only products. People are just shocked at how expensive it CAN be, but as usual, they immediately disregard the other options like only the most expensive or top-tier products are options. The same with how people look at GPUs, which is always about the top-tier ones even though you mostly don't NEED those. Same with guitars, in that people look at their favorite artists and think they "need" that American-made or even custom-built guitar that costs thousands just to play guitar. - No, stop thinking that way.

Feels great, feels very immersive all together. You don't have to break the bank to race. If you have crap driving skills it doesn't matter how much you spend on this stuff. You will suck anyway. I’m happy playing with a controller on a flatscreen TV sitting in my couch, but I would love to actually have a simulator, even just a VR helmet and a cheap steering wheel would be cool, but not in my budget unfortunately

Don't blow your budget on this kind of stuff guys if you're not going to be making money out of it which I don't know unless you get really good on UA-cam boy you start making some money out of gaming by streaming you're investing a lot of money in something that's you're not gonna get the money bac so essentially you're investing a lot of money into a hobby now if you can afford it go for it knock yourself out but if it means that you are blowing all of your money on this gear then you need to ask a serious question is that an addiction? Just some thoughts on it? That's all I think equipment is great and I don't own any of this SIM gear at all as I simply don't game enough to justify even though it's fantastic. I have spent $25,000 on my camera gear but I've made that back because I sell photos and I do professional work.

After a decade with Thrustmaster and a wheelstand I recently upgraded to a Simagic Alpha U with an FX Pro and GTC C & an alu profile rig (still building the rig which is getting crazy expensive). I haven't even plugged in the Alpha yet.
For my means Its crazy expensive but IT is not the problem. I am. I could have stayed with the TM gear but I got the upgrade bug. Its basically a lack of self control for shiny objects. None of it is necessary to enjoy sim racing. Even a joypad will do or a G29. Hell I started with a Logitech Momo and loved it. My problem isn't the pricing. Its getting caught up thinking you have to buy the next thing with lights on it & I have to stop myself and actually race rather than tinker with kit.
These halo products are fine. They are made for a certain rich demographic. They are for people who either want to show off or want the very very best. If they want to spend that kind of money go for it. I'll never own one but there are now so many options down those halo products I feel no pressure to buy higher end. A TM Open Wheel for $130 will do the job. Its a great time to be a sim racer at any budget.

The add on wheels to me, feel like a capitalist cash grab. The DD bases used to be crazy expensive, and post the Fanatec CSL DD release, manufacturers have been forced to sell lower priced DD bases in order to compete = less profit. It now feels like the wheels and pedals have replaced the bases as the overpriced cash grab by manufacturers to plug that profit loss after lowering DD base prices, and it doesn’t feel like they need to be this expensive. Some journalistic research into the actual manufacturing cost of each wheel and pedal set would no doubt expose some of these would have HUGE profit margins, demonstrating they don’t need to be as expensive as they are.

There is an over saturation of these companies tossing their hat into the ring and are literally only kept afloat because someone dumb over pays them to set something up for them that should be based on their own opinions.

Sim racing over the years has been filled with fanatics (mostly frustrated and incompetent) and “wreckers” , the small part of true fans who play for enjoyment or more ambitious goals, but with fairness on the track, has paid the price, which is not only in terms of game quality, but also economically. Very expensive peripherals, 100% useless, only for cosmetic use, and an expensive but functional part. In any case, 90% of sim racers could race with a G29 and nothing would change.

The problem with this is that elitism is taken care of while the real market suffers.
Also people always want their rig to have some sort of identity of branding associated with it. it is an ego thing.
Moza has decided to copy fanatec. Period. Not a good way to go.
instead of making that wheel they could have spent time to develop a button box for generic wheels. If Moza's philosophy is to make wheels for everyone then why not make a button box where people could buy the rims they want?
The best brand to suce4ed at branding is thrustmaster with their branded wheels. Fanatec after and Moza is catching up but in the worse way possible. For every stupid 1000+ wheel they could have sold 500 @ 200$ and disperse their brand more out there than limiting there market. Moza has entered the go zone and is trying to beat fanatec at their won game on the super expensive side and it is incredibly stupid.

The most expensive thing about sim racing for me was that I bought cheap equipment, twice.
Twice I opted for the cheap Logitech products, but they may have been cheap, but they weren't much fun. I actually thought that I just don't like sim racing, that maybe it's just me that this Logitech G29 & G923 are GOOD enough to have fun with, because every Simracing UA-camr said so. I was totaly wrong, the only thing these cheap wheels do is rattle, make unnecessary noise and feel like you're mowing the lawn. After the two bad purchases, I decided on Fanatec's products, Simrig from Playseat/Logitech and of course everything was really expensive, but it was only with the expensive products that I found out that I not only enjoy this hobby, but that I'm also good at it. One month of Gran Turismo, two months of ACC and after that, i decided to give iRacing a chance with the good but expensive equipment, I can say that you shouldn't save money on a hobby like this.
IF I were to start over again I would avoid the expensive mistake of buying cheap products AND i would ignore Simracing UA-camrs, because they are all bias. Not all, Kireth is a good Simracing Dude ;)

No, you can make it as expensive as you want. I'm still having a blast on my decade old T300. Also a trend I see a lot on Online Market places is "I'm selling my 10+K simrig that's catching dust only few months old" :o
