On moderate i got attacked by like 3-4 knights and way more skirmishers. You might wanna do a new 2023 playthrough on these campaigns as they are not the same like in 2019.
Quite a pretty frustrating scenario. Not because it is that hard, but with the limited resources at the start, the low pop cap and the raids starting from the beginning, it took me a loooong time to get comfortable. For some reason I managed to pull off a castle right outside their southern gate which was the tipping point. Few stables around it for knights and camels and it is a matter of time before you win.
I had the same experience. I've beaten nearly all campaigns on hard, but this was one of the hardest scenario's thus far - and it's the first mission too lol. Not only do I lose all my starting units before reaching the TC every single time, , but the red AI *inmediately* attacks in force. It uses groups of knights, archers, skirmishers and rams to hit me. Before that though, I'm forced to abuse the AI by letting Sundjata run in circles around the town center until the garissoned villagers finally kill all the starting pursuers. I stress that I gather all GAIA units available at the start, then use the route along the river to avoid most enemy patrols but *even then* the patrols I can't avoid beat my starting force every single time, and not by a small margin either. The only way to survive the start was to rush Sundjata to the TC and then abuse the AI in the way mentioned above. Though I've read that the AI will only use rams when you've built a castle, it has absolutely no qualms about sending groups of 3/4 my way right from the start. The only reason I've managed to survive is that I walled myself in and that bugged out all the enemy units at some point, making them stand still and do nothing right in front of my walls. Sometimes one of them would somehow attack and damage a building that was on the other side of the walls, but that was no danger if I prioritised killing those units. It does show how bugged the scenario is though. There wasn't all whole lot that made sense in my playthrough.
This one was really annoying. The way I was able to beat it was successfully draw the enemy cav at the start away from Sundjata and keep them from heading into my town, then full walling the map including the shallows. The AI couldn't do any damage and I boomed up, made a ton of knights and rams, and steamrolled their base.
I was having trouble with this scenario on hard. I tried multiple strategies. I did everything except TC turtle because it's so annoying but GD I'm tired of losing. You win game.
Your dad sounds cool ! You should show him the 'From Nothing' youtube channel, its got some great material on West African history, even some alt-history speculation in there.
I was having problems with the early aggression, I watched the video and then went to complete this scenario in the next try, the first part when Sundiata has to arrive to the town center has to be FAST, as red will develop his economy while you are getting to the town center, so sacrifice all the Gaia units you encounter to distract red scattered army and get Sundiata to the yellow town center asap, then immediately set your economy behind the village you get just as Ornlu did here, get to castle age and build a castle to protect your economy, get the relic that is nearby, make and use light cavalry to kill battering rams and the castle to kill everything else (take care of the units you produce with castle gathering and the monk you made to get the relic), now it will be hard especially because of the battering rams (I was Town centerless in one point because of this) but as long as you manage to get to castle age first and defend the castle you build you will eventually have all the upgrades and things necessary to start producing camels/knights and battering rams yourself and win
Played this today after my PC couldn't handle Kotyan 5. I was so slow, man. It sucked that you can't make trebs out of castles. Sundjata is a great hero unit though.
Man, I hate Malian infantry. In castle age ok it is very strong but in imperial... I rather like there cavalry. Malians with blast furnace and farimba + 3 (as it was at the beginning) would be far better
Agreed, African Tribalism has been a blight on Africa for thousands of years and continues to this day and is the root cause of most of their problems and they will never move forward until they admit they have a problem.
This is the most annoying scenario in the entire game (second to Lake Poyang imo) just because of the constant early attacks and gathering resources near your town center for is nearly impossible!
Malians: have the single broadest Castle Age tech tree
Western European civs: advance to Imperial Age.
Thank you, every time I am stuck on a campaign I come looking for your channel and then beat it right after
Really enjoy all your campaign videos man, keep up the good work!
22:21 An English outpost! You know what to do!

I liked your videos and your in-game commentary. You should continue making videos on AoE2:DE

I don't always put a like, but hey you asked it so nicely.

This mission seems to crash now after you start building up your base, have tried it on 3 different PCs and all of them have crashed
watching your vids give me hope in beating hard myself with a dash of cursing here and there, it'll somehow come thru lol
Working on this now, good god is it hard. Looking for this for some inspiration.
Why not install a bigger SSD?
Because a HDD would make more sense for storing videos kappa. But in all seriousness, cuz I'm broke as hell 111
I couldn't complete the hard mode because it's really hard. While this video may seem easy, it's actually not easy.
you've all the gold in the world and still looking for stone ? you are not a true colonial Ornlu

I knight rushed them and won

Oh i really hate the early cav and skirms raid. Impossible to build your base
You can lead them to your tc and let the hero tank, some knights and rams, monks easy win
It's v sluggish alright. Boring TC defense followed by an annoying base to take down.
