    The thing about cloning animals is that the new one has the same DNA, but they are still a different animal. Like the video on the website said, it's like an identical twin. They have very similar DNA, but they can and will have different personalities and memories.

    I lost my dog last month and I'm in middle of the whole grieving process right now, and you know what? I'm kind of embarrassed, but cloning my dog is actually coming up to my mind pretty often. I understand that it's not the exact same dog but it still feels like "close enough" for me because losing him just feels too much...waaay too much.
    BUT with that being said, a huge problem about this whole cloning business is the safty/health issues of all the dogs that are forced to give birth to what could possibility be hundreds of puppies.
    The truth is, this whole business is just a glorified high-tech puppy mill selling puppies that looks a little similar to your lost dog but a completely different one for $50,000 by taking advantage of your grief. They clearly don't care for the well being of animals or the grief the owners are going through. PET OWNERS PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR THIS SHIT.

    This brings up the morality of mortality, and the humane side of grieving or dealing with death. The start of animal cloning can evolve into human cloning and religiously (i am not very religious) the thought and feeling of being able to replace someone makes it lose value, not to undermine the fact that the clone will be different, the difference imo would open up the wound of death, instead of closing it up, or making it disappear.

Trying to cover up the discomfort in alternative ways does not fix the stem of the problem- which in this case is grieving. But it applies to so much other shit that people are choosing to normalise now too, like choosing plastic surgery over self love. It goes to show how sad humans really are.

    Ok but this is literally a dystopian novel in the making. What if it gets so popular that people will clone the best animals and sell them but you don’t know if it’s a clone or not so you have to have papers showing it’s the original. The clones could become so despised because they are worth less than the original animal. Or what if they clone the animal just to use its organs to keep the original animal alive. Hey, biology student here! There’s a fuckton of problems here:
    First of all, the dog’s not gonna live much. His cells are already as old as the “original” dog was when he got the biopsy done, so his life expectancy will be considerably lower. For example if the dog was ten years old at the time of the biopsy and was supposed to live up to twenty years old, he will only live ten years, not twenty.
    Also, cloning nowadays isn’t nearly as advanced as they make it out to be. There’s a huge chance that he’ll have a ton of genetic problems that the might not have even detected now, making his quality of life considerably worse.
    So please, please, dear rich people, wait another twenty years before you try to clone anything and just adopt an animal who needs it

    • @fashiharz8584
      @fashiharz8584 4 роки тому +17

    • @morgoth_bauglir
      @morgoth_bauglir 4 роки тому +156

      @@fashiharz8584 So, in order to clone something, you need one of their cells, right? The cells of an x year old organism. You extract the nucleus, where the dna of the x year old animal is (making the dna also x years old). Then you get an egg from another animal of the same species. You extract the nucleus of the egg and place the nucleus of the first animal in its place. Think of it as a nucleus swap. You then put the egg in a foster mother and TADA! You got an embryo that's genetically the same as the organism numer 1! Bit of a drawback though: the original cell is already x years old, which means that the new organism is still gona operate as an x years old one (idk if that's the correct wording, english is not my mother language)

      The Hair Of Slytherin I don’t think it’s really that big of an issue, at the end of the day dogs/humans don’t die because of the length of their DNA’s telomeres. Usually it’s something else that kills them first.

      Med student here! What @The Hair of Slytherin said is true, it's why Dolly the sheep lived only about 6 years when her life expectancy should've been around twice as much. One of the theories is that her telomeres (the caps at the end of your chromosomes) were shortened by age, and she only had a certain number of divisions left until the cells entered apoptosis or programmed cell death.

    I wrote an essay about this exact subject in middle school and titled it "See Spot Run... Again" and I argued that you'd get a copy of the same dog, that has none of the same experiences that made your dog special. They'd just look the same, there's no guarantee they'd have the same disposition. And that's what we love about our dogs, the way they behave.

    An hypothesis suggests that clones may actually die faster than the original. To put it simply: you can clone, for example, a dog using the cells from your 12 yo pet, but that may not change the age of the cells you've extracted and used to create the new version of the canine.
    At the end of each chromosome there are telomeres which protect the chromosome from deterioration and from fusing with the neighboring chromosome, these telomeres also try to avoid that when a cell splits major part of DNA don't get replicated. But, as time goes by, the telomeres stop working and important parts of DNA aren't fully replicated when the cells split. This is the aging process (which doesn't solely depend of telomeres).
    This way, a clone of a 12 yo pet may live less than it's original. But this isn't yet confirmed.
    Another reason a clone may live significantly less than the original is that implanting a nucleus in an egg can cause damage to the DNA making it harder for the animal to survive or producing a healthy clone.
    Cloning is still being researched and we are far from being able to clone human beings, as the success rate oscillates and the risk of producing damaged clones is high because of many different factors we still have to study thorougly.

    • @niyandrey
      @niyandrey 4 роки тому +7

      Judging by your professional tone and knowledge on the topic, I assume you are familiar with this field of research. Then you shouldn't treat your proposed aging hypothesis as the right one because it's not a proven one yet.
      There have been a couple of examples when cattle cloned from somatic cells of relatively old cows have outlived the subtracted life expectancy. The length of the clones' telomeres is also longer than the " originals' " is. Obviously, I don't have a degree in this field... yet. I'm only planning to apply for Bioengineering, so as much as I'd like to say I'm familiar with the process, in fact, I only know the concept. So if you know something about the topic, be sure to leave any links, I will gladly consume every research or paragraph I can find as long as it doesn't lead me into Bill Gates X COVID conspiracies territory lol

      @@niyandrey Thank you for your comment. I do not have a degree in bioengineering or anything, I'm just a fanatic and I've read and heard about the telomeres hypothesis before, and was just trying to explain what I had read/saw in various articles and documentaries.
      Before writing this comment I did my research not to spread misinformation, but I didn't word it properly.
      As you said, we don't know yet how beings age exactly, and the fact that it partially depends on telomeres is in fact, still an hypothesis.
      Now, about the cattles, you are right. Some cloned cattles outlived the originals and the length of the telomeres was that of a newborn baby.
      My comment is solely based off of the hypothesis that telomeres might regenerate as shorter than a newborn's should be. Even though that doesn't happen in every single case, and the length of telomeres relies on a lot of different factors.
      I have modified the comment so to not mislead anyone.
      As for the articles, you'd find a lot of good ones on Google Scholar just by typing in the key words! I use it for my university assignments all the time.
      I was trying to find some other places where you could find a good article, and just by searching in google and making sure that the source is reliable, you can find some pretty good articles.

    There're two reasons why someone would clone his / her pet dog and in both cases it will most likely bring more harm than good
    1. Grief. In our culture we're already so disconnected from death that some people are ready to clone their pets to avoid feeling sad about loosing companion. The coping mechanism is unhealthy by itself but it also won't work. Your cloned puppy will have the same DNA but also will be raised by a different mum, fed with different food, even you, its owner will be a completely different person after all the years you've spent with the original pet. Because of the environmental factors your new dog will be similar to your friend enough for it to hurt but not close enough so you will think it's the same animal
    2. Breed. Modern dog breeds already suffer from a plethora of problems caused by limited gene pools and inbreeding so cloning would make the situation even worse
    I would also mention the overpopulated animal shelters but I have a feeling that the people who have enough money to think about cloning their pets don't even consider having a mutt

    I remember seeing an article about a family who cloned their dog and were upset that the clone's personality was not 100% the same as the original dog was, and I think that's something people don't really give enough thought to when considering cloning. You're not getting the exact same animal, because environment, nurture etc. matters. You will get the same set of genes in the same order as the original, but there will always be some differences between a clone and an original.
    Would I clone my own dog? No. My dog passed away few years ago, and it was one of the hardest times I've had to live through, and while cloning would never be financially viable option for me, I also feel like that a clone wouldn't be the same. It might look the same and have the same temperament, but it would not have the same memories, experiences and knowledge as the OG did. It wouldn't be my dog, it would be a fresh copy of my dog. I would rather just get a new puppy of the same breed and make new memories with that puppy; the new puppy and a clone would be on the same level anyway. The clone doesn't have memories of the past, or care that I paid 50k to make it real. I could keel over the next day and the clone puppy would be adopted out and live a completely different life, and it wouldn't matter because it wouldn't know any different.

Like, it feels like they’re trying to convince people that they can make their dogs almost... *immortal* if they just pay this company thousands of dollars. Like D’Angelo said: if the typical lifespan of your dog’s breed is around 12-15 years, whose to say that you don’t clone your dog AGAIN when the second one dies? Whose to say that your children don’t do the same thing? In that case, does the continuous copying of genes present the possibility of defects? And does it qualify as immortality if the “same” person gets to live over and over again, like some sort of Phoenix Effect?
    Idk, this all just seems WILDLY unregulated by the scientific community and by morals in general.

      ThatSasquatch well, I do agree that cloning is a weird thing to do and I wouldn’t do it, but lots of traits in dogs are genetic and often times so are their behaviors. For instance some dogs are inherently more intelligent then others and some dogs are more hyper or some are calmer or easier to train etc. lots of behaviors in pets are already present upon birth. Another reason that one may clone a dog is to have a good dog for hunting which can for many dogs be a traumatic experience, and although some breeds are better for hunting, there is still a large margin of variability even within those specific breeds. I’m sure there are more reasons but I’m too lazy to do any research on the topic

      Nick Rarely comments it’s still not the same dog. When you talk about certain traits that are present at birth, like trainability or hyperactivity, that’s just a general guess at what the dog is gonna be like; it’s not a guarantee. The cloned dog will develop its own habits and behaviors that are different from its predecessor. The mistake you’re making (and the clone dog owners, too) is that the memories or personality of predecessor dog will transfer genetically; that’s not how genetics work. The only transfer is DNA, which will slightly change as clone dog ages

    • @nickszymaszek5960
      @nickszymaszek5960 4 роки тому +4

      Leon Plié DNA doesn’t change with age and there is a genetic element to certain behaviors in animals, although you are right that the memories and personality of the dog won’t transfer, often times certain personality traits are present at birth, it’s the same for humans, for instance depression and some addictions (like alcoholism and drug dependence) are hereditary. Basically some aspects of any animals personality, while not guaranteed, are heavily affected by their genetics. There is also proof that different sounds are uncomfortable to animals at different levels based on their heredity. For instance some people are more annoyed by the sound of chewing because of genetics, this correlates to my assessment of a dogs comfort around firearms because they may be genetically inclined to be more comfortable around loud bangs. I know it’s not the same dog, but it has the same DNA, so it would inherit all of the traits that it’s predecessor was born with.

      The only actual reason I can see someone having is if they had some sort of miraculous, perfect-conformation dog that had no genetic diseases. It may seem cold, but a conformation dog bred from two winners can occasionally also cost thousands, so paying more to make sure you have a known perfect pup can, on rare occasions, be worth it.

    • @waterlily7075

      It actually is! The companies hide the animal abuse from the public and instead prey on emotions the article "Carbon copy cruelty: The ethical concerns with pet cloning" actually states that " Given the unusually high rates of late-term miscarriages and high birth weights among clones, the surrogate mothers are at greater risk of dying or suffering serious complications than animals who become pregnant naturally. The clones, themselves, however, suffer the most serious problems: They are much more likely than other animals to be miscarried, have birth defects, develop serious illnesses, and die prematurely." So not only is the pregnant poor female dog mother at risk of dying or suffering a painful life, but the dog you just cloned could grow sick, have unnatural mutations and die really quickly :>

    I lost my dog last year, she was 12 years old, literally 3 years younger than me and she's been my best friend for almost my entire life really. She had cancer for a few years, but she had a couple small operations to remove tumours (they were only at the surface). Suddenly in may last year she started breathing abnormally, moving slowly, her gums turned pale and she was lethargic and tired. Up until then she had always been thrilled to go for a walk, and she would slow down as we neared our house on the way back because she wanted to stay outside, but as she was ill she could just slowly totter to the end of the street, and would need to be carried back home. Even seeing my own dog physically unable to be herself was absolutely heartbreaking. She went to the vets overnight for injections to hopefully open her airways, so she would be able to breathe better (although we've never really known the exact cause of her breathing issues), and she died on the early morning of june 1st through essentially suffocation. Hearing that she had died was absolutely _mortifying_, I felt guilty that she had died, I was so shocked that she just didnt exist anymore. For anyone who has never lost a pet, or any close family, you just dont get over them like you might do with a lost toy as a kid. Even now I expect to see her, _my_ dog when I enter rooms and come home, not a dog that looks like her and has her face, a dog who smiles and jumps and sprints with the same excitement as she did. I have a recurring nightmare where she returns, but she is wrong or corrupt, her fur is cold and smells of antiseptic, her skin is hard and her face is moulded into the same way as she lay on the table of the vets. Or she is completely void of all expression, walks mechanically, and responds to no stimuli. I really couldn't imagine how these people must feel to want to clone their dog, just trying to scrap their grief and forget that they ever lost anything, maybe so immersed in the power of technology and cloning that they never stopped to mourn and consider the value and sacredness and loss of the life of their real dog, the original dog. I know that I will always love my dog, and cherish the time and childhood I got to spend with her, and I hope if anyone reads this that they can understand that to mourn for your loss is to respect and cherish them when they were alive. ❤

      Wow... this was really profound. I'm 33 and still have dreams about my beloved childhood dogs being alive. There's something comforting about it, but it also feels much like you describe. Often, the dream involves someone noticing that the dog is still around and doing the math on how old it must be. The dog wasn't totally ignored before, just that no one really paid attention to how very, very old it was. Once someone points it out, I realize how fragile the dog is and worry it could die any minute. Everything feels weird. Out of balance. The dog usually acts distant. I've given this some thought before, but your comment helped me see it more clearly. I think it will be helpful to reflect on. I may come up with new insights, or at least come to terms with the recent health decline of my parents' 14 year old dog, who I lived with for several years and love dearly. I appreciate you sharing all this. I'm glad you had many years with your beloved dog. She must have been so happy with you. Clone 10 is a shell of his former self, trauma stricken and bitter, he just wants to die and becomes this nightmare Cujo dog determined to bring down viogen and his selfish owners he once cherished but now loathes.

I'm wondering if a scandal would come out if someone with a dog that's a mutt, with more unique markings and patterns that you couldn't just go and find, were to try getting their pet cloned

    Unpopular opinion: as someone who is depressed, lonely, and only is really able to find companionship in my current situation through my pets, I can honestly understand why someone might do this and I honestly think I would even consider it if I had that kind of money, especially if I was grieving in my already not great mental state.
    That being said, the thought that I would even consider it is terrifying to me, as there's a million ethical problems I have with this whole situation and in the end, it really wouldn't help me OR my pets in any way, so what's the point?

    He's called Paddy and he's looked after me since I was younger (just being a chill dude like as dogs are) and he's possibly going to die soon (dark I know) but we're going be just mourning him and remember him
    We would never do this because 1) it would *never* be the same dog 2) you can give an adopted dog an amazing home instead of being hung up on your dog dying
