I was always skeptical about NFTs and how they'd be useful because of how many people are trying to get into it. but the simple answer is: They're not. It's an example of people being able to sell literally ANY idea with the right amount of persuasion. It's scary how some people just bought into it and didn't stop to think how stupid the idea is for digital artwork. No one cares about owning the original if it's identical to a copy.
This might be true in some cases, since NFT's are fairly new to the general public. But a looot of artists are actually selling physical goods with their NFT's. So you're not buying this digital item that's identical to what everyone else can view, but most of the time you actually get something that you will be the sole owner off. Of course this depends highly on the seller, and I 100% agree with you that there are a lot of useless NFT's out there, which just exist to cash in on the craze. But I can assure you that 90% of those will disappear after the people understand their uselessness :D NFT's are actually great for digital artists, because we are artists as well. It's just that we don't have canvases which we can hang in a gallery for people to purchase. Most of a Digital Artists work evolved around doing commissioned work for someone, which is a soul draining task. Finally, thanks to NFT's, digital artists have a way of doing what they love, and also financially supporting themselves :)
i am so grateful to hear that you won’t be doing NFTs anytime soon, honestly. so many big creators are drowning themselves in worthless certificates for hundreds of eco-fiendly dollars and its dissapointing
tbh i get it, its like buying luxury brands. Its not the quality that makes them expensive, its the image it gives. You could still buy high quality clothes, for eg., for way cheaper, yet people still buy exclusive brands simply for the image. You buy gucci to show that you're rich, successful, that you have power, not because you actually like the design.
They don't even own it is the kicker. NFTs do not give ownership. It's the equivalent of "buying" a star and owning the certificate. You don't own the star, just the certificate saying you do. At least, from my understanding.

I think the worst case of NFTs I saw was when people were stealing and selling Qinni’s art. You know, the very very beloved artist who tragically passed away not all that long ago. Her own sibling had to come forward and beg people to stop. It’s genuinely heartbreaking
I remember watching the galaxy freckles years ago when I was a little younger because I had water colors and wanted to draw like that, I never knew she died :((
I am an artist that doesn't support the NFTs, but whenever I would try to explain to my artists friends why NFTs are problematic they wouldn't listen to me. It makes me so happy seeing D'Angelo tackle the issue regarding this
I like the idea of NFTs and see a future with it, but I agree that the high energy consumption is a problem. But ETH is moving to proof-of-stake sometime in the next few years, and at that point it’s gonna take a lot less energy to transact. That should solve the problem. Until then, it’s not the best idea to be supporting NFTs right now. For those who don’t know, BTC and ETH run on a proof-of-work model which requires processing power and energy to calculate the transaction. But proof-of-stake allows for transactions to be calculated with significantly less energy.
I'm also an artist and I'm very against NFTs because uhh... We artists literally do commissions. You can have a fully custom drawing from an artist without burning the earth for it.
I'm just happy to see a comment near the top that's relevant to the video. I'm too caught up on how the mining works in the first place to get much past that...Like, how do you make something from nothing, and...nevermind. I'm either too old or too dense to understand
and with that mindset you and the other dude on here won't ever be worth anything, being noble doesn't get you to where you want and I bet if your art went for millions in nft you'd jump on it.
Before I had an understanding of what NFTs are, I thought, “So they’re spending money on things that are free?” Now that I understand them, I’m like, “Oh, so they’re spending money on things that are free.”
EXACTLY!!!! These NFT fanboys pretend like they are inventing some sort of magical way to make artists richer, when loads of other ways of purchasing art have already existed without any loopholes for ages. The only difference between the art that has existed for ages and NFTs is that rich people are willing to slap down thousands of dollars for NFTS...which shows how shallow these NFT buyers truely are... If these people ACTUALLY cared about the artists behind their artwork, they would pay loads of different artists for prints or commissions instead of patronizing us so much
The funniest thing is that most(like, the VAST majority) of artists that I saw getting into NFTs, are all either industry pros or already have a huge platform that they make money from. Artists get an "invite" to join the NFTs hosting sites, which means that the hosting sites like Foundation, want to get big names, (no small, poorer artists), to publicize their platform so that more people join in and help keep the prices up. There's no "small artist" that is making bank on NFTs, it's all big names and industry veterans, which means that it's just carelessly greedy assholes and nothing more. Legit saw a pro vis dev, who last week made a fuss about some bullshit like the environmental impact of cow leather vs vegan leather, candidly announce that they were in list to join Foundation yesterday LMAOOOOOOOO
“Humanity, it slapped. We did some crazy things We invented music, we invented art. Yknow. We came together and it tore us apart” D’angelo unintentionally spittin bars like it’s nothing
I should let you know, the Mona Lisa is a panel and not a canvas, so you would'nt be able to roll it up and tuck it under your arm like they do in the movies. Just keep that in mind while planning your heist.
"But NFTs give you a receipt proving that it's the original!" Me, giving my commissioners the high-resolution, unwatermarked image of their commissions and only posting the watermarked version publicly: 👁➖👁
@@carter6955 did you forget that watermarks could be removed? Let me request a commission and I'll just remove your watermark and use AI to upscale it. You'll make no money despite your effort
Can you imagine standing outside Target, after you just bought AirPods, and selling the receipt for your AirPods for more than you paid for the headphones? Because that’s basically what NFTs are.
@@kartgal yeah, if we take that analogy very literally, but even still I just mean conceptually it doesn’t make sense. Right now I can go take a screen grab of Jack Dorsey’s first tweet of Twitter despite someone else paying like 6 million for it. I have the screenshot and so does the NFT owner the only difference is they have a receipt that says they paid millions for nothing. Having the receipt that merely says “I have a receipt” doesn’t mean anything at all unless other people agree it does. No matter what you still don’t own that thing, you don’t own the copyright, you just have the receipt. So, yeah, if someone else wants to pay for your receipt that’s fine but it’s literally just a receipt people are overhyping to oblivion.
@@kartgal right, but only because someone says it had meaning. If people want to say that a receipt is worth selling then you can but you also have to recognize it’s absurd. It isn’t any different, other than people saying it’s worth something, because a receipt is all it is.
@@imdoneplus To put it into perspective I personally thought of them more like trading cards (like how D'Angelo mentions in the video) so like for example a lot of people spend thousands and thousands of dollars on pokemon cards which you could technically just print.
In a famous italian film a man tries to scam tourists tricking them into thinking they can own the Trevi Fountain if they pay for a certificate. Now it's real.
I absolutely love and have a stroke over the amount of people who use “oh, so you just don’t like it when an artist actually makes money?” as some kind of weird gotcha response to NFT criticism.
@@kandieharrison4055 thank you!! For fuck sake I'd rather starve than see the world burn. People who actually defend NFTs are pathetic, selfish, and greedy as fuck. I'm an aspiring artist but this is no way to sell art. How much of a sell-out people have become now. I hope this crypto dies out soon
Exactly! Only thing keeping me from making money off of my art/designs is being a minor lol. When I do comms w site currencies my slots tend to fill decently fast and multiple people have specifically asked me if I took USD for commissions because they were interested.
A lot of smaller time digital artists I know are actually heartbroken by NFTs. The sort of money they go for would be genuinely lifechanging for most people I know, but instead they had to deal with the risk of bots on twitter trying to steal and resell their artwork and the moral implications of the environmental damage NFTs do. And every time they tried to discuss them, they'd get bogged down by crypto currency fanboys trying to argue for how great NFTs. It's been a nightmare.
In fact if you look around, the artists doing NFT's are big names in the industry ALREADY, people who were already with more than decent paychecks, the biggest earners on patreon, etc... No small artist is benefitting from NFT's, no matter how much people try to glue that narrative around them.
@@RobotScarlet Usually you have to buy some ETH first before you sell, and ETH is very pricy. So if you are an artist genuinely down on your luck, you won’t be able to start selling in the first place. NFTs are the rich getting richer, what else is new...
Yuup! most of my artists friends privated their accounts because they were so scared of the bots. Small artists will never be the "main focus" no one cares about your art when you're small U_U its so sad
Now I may be dumb because I still don't get NFT's, but if they'd just watermark their names all over the art and then sell it, then they can't get stolen right?
Fun fact the Mona Lisa was actually stolen at one time, which led to it being recognized as a priceless treasure. Thankfully, we already know that D'Angelo is priceless.
@@kittystetson6737 the original artist probably. most artists retain the rights to their art. or they could belong to their management or be sold to a company. like when a company has a logo designed for them the company then has some rights to the logo (based on contracts) that allows them to make merch with their new logo on it without having to get the artist’s permission. there are a couple of different rights for each piece of art though and an artist can sell all of those or just some of them. it varies from situation to situation
the only artists making money off of NFTs are the ones who were already rich or had a large following to begin with. most small artists end up losing money with NFTs

There was also that NFT of the late Chadwick Boseman's face given away in the Oscars gift bags this year, adding another layer of disgust to the NFT situation
Pretty sure that the only digital artists that have benefitted off of NFTs were only ones with huge platforms that already had plenty of money. At least that I’ve seen. Not to mention, when NFTs were becoming more widely known, people kept using bots to tokenize small creators art works so a bunch of digital artists had to lock their accounts to avoid this :/
I remember someone impersonating a deceased artist to sell NFTs of their works, the whole business is so disgusting (the artist being QinniArt, her art is really well known)
@@littletomato6561 I would like to pretend so too but Qinni's brother had to make a whole statement that they're not affiliated with those NFTs, it was so upsetting :( (Also I don't think those NFTs sites have copyright or report options like ??? I hate it here)

I actually first heard of it like 2 weeks ago when I was in this Facebook group called Transformers Botposting. There's this person post something about NFTs and it said it's gonna effect Transformers Toys in a bad way, because their plastic. Most Transformers fans thought it was stupid. There's a thing that you can recycle plastic. Does NFTs heard about recycling?
This reminds me of what the artist Yves Klein did. He made dozens of paintings (physical paintings) of the same block colour on differently sized/shaped canvases and sold them all for different prices on the basis that he was selling them as a moment of creation rather than a piece of artwork - that the buyer had seen something unique in that specific painting of the same shade of blue, and that therefore made it more valuable to them. Only you're still getting a physical painting made by a world-renowned artist with his own trademark colour (International Klein Blue), and you spend more money on it for the novelty of being the owner of that "moment".
I love how rich people will spend money on this and then freak out if their taxes get raised...you know, tax dollars that go to the betterment of society.
fungible basically means exchangeable and identical lol. so like 1USD is fungible with any other 1USD, because a dollar is a dollar. non fungible indicates that the token is unique, and impossible to duplicate (in terms of the literal value of the token).
@@risa-pd8ux And even with NFTs, there can be multiple copies of an NFT. In which case those are fungible with each other. There's in many cases not even a print number that may impact the value, like nr 1 being the most expensive. It's actually good that there's no print numbers because it makes them easier to sell since people don't have to think about that number impacting the price.
It’s two words-the rich. They are constantly looking for unique things to drop bags of money on-this is just another logical step. They already tried giving money to the poors but that is *so gauche* 🤦
@@primedailyquotes8759 Since the douchey guy won't explain it then I will. Buying an NFT is like buying a deed that says that you have "ownership" of a digital asset, and having your status as owner of that digital asset repeated and listed on a network of hundreds of thousands of computers all accross the globe (essentially making forgery near impossible). It's like having ownership of an original painting vs having ownership of an extremely accurate 1:1 replica of said painting. The biggest appeal to buying art in the form of NFTs is that you wouldn't need an expert appraiser or art expert to determine the authenticity of a piece, anyone can look at the digital ledgers and trace it back to the artist that originally "minted" it as everytime the NFT changes hands, the transaction permanently listed accross the network of hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide.
And we now need to spread the word about the injustice that Palesrinians face. Palestinians face discrimination and eviction from their home land. We need to spread the word about the Aparthied which is going on. Justice and Free Palestinians.
One of the other big messages/campaigns Gorillaz had was "reject false icons." This was used during like the release of Demon Days and the message was essentially to never look up or idolize big celebrities that you dont truly know because what they show is a facade etc., and ironically enough a lot of gorillaz fans didnt apply this ideal to Albarn and Hewlett, and think that any negative criticism towards either of them for what they did is like an ultimate sin or something
We’ve been look at NFT’s in intellectual property law, and it’s so confusing. Like, the concept is simple enough to understand, but in terms of the creative license holders rights with someone buying NFT’s is just a whole ‘nother level. I’m nonbinary and i don’t really see anything wrong with it. imo it doesn’t seem like they’re equating female and nonbinary. Just that this is a specific artist showcase that excludes men. If anything I like that they thought to include enbies since we often get overlooked
@@littlewyzard there is a real issue of ppl grouping things that way specifically to imply that nonbinary ppl are women-lite (basically that we're basically the same as women, which.... oof, for a lot of reasons, part of which is "not all of us are afab or id with femininity in any way and for some of us being associated with women at all is dysphoria-inducing and invalidating to our indentity") but tbh it depends on how they were executing it (which, considering its an nft exhibit they shouldnt have been executing it at all but lol anyways). basically if they were only putting in cis women and afab nonbinary ppl, excluding trans women or amab nonbinary ppl and letting in binary trans men? then yeah, oof, no, that definitely a case of "they view nonbinary as women 2 and are invalidating trans ppl", yknow?

Most artists I follow hate these. A few even went off Twitter because of these. NFTs just make it too bloody easy for people to profit from art they do not own.
You know what’s sad, the thought, “I mean my college tuition would be covered if I could sell one” actually went though my head. am I a horrible person, probably, but why is college so expensive! >.
NFTs aren’t even useful for poor artists anyways, since rich people only want to buy NFTS from people who are already well-respected or popular. If an average Joe like me ever tried to make an NFT I would get significantly less money out of it, and shamed by all of the critics (who are completely valid for criticizing it btw). Additionally, some sites actually REQUIRE money in order to go forth with the creation of an NFT, which is 😬😬😬 Do yourself a favor and do commissions and prints and stickers instead, it’s a way better use of your time, and it does NOTHING to harm the environment at all! 😄
It's a legit thought tbh, but the thing that people need to understand is that artists that are not already "big" in the market, aren't gonna get much out of NTFs. NFTs sell at high prices either if the seller is already a famous artist or if the image itself is already famous, any other sale is going to fail(meaning you simply have no bids) or is gonna sale for less than $1K(which means that half of that goes away in hosting fees and taxes). Even many famous artists that got greedy and joined NFT hosting sites usually sell for $2K or less.
University administrator salaries and no governmental regulation on tuition price control for universities, despite them basically being paid in government money (ie federal student loans).
I'm gonna be real and say that if you're going to con people, at least go for something that'll only cost you a tarot deck for psychic readings, and not 600 dollars to "mint" an NFT.

At least ARCA is a renowned music producer. But that still does not make an excuse for that dogcrap she calls a font. She isn't even selling the font, just a piece of paper she scanned in a computer.
the _correct_ way to do NFTs would just be to use them as a means of digitally obfuscating content so that it physically _can’t be consumed_ until you buy it. It’s like something a record label would invest in, or a games publisher, like content-agnostic DRMs. Which, already, I have issues with that too, because NFTs are intended to be exclusive, but they should probably be somewhat aware of the features of the content and usable as a means of determining if you bought the same content by comparing it with an alternate representation of it without it being a bit-exact copy of the original, which you generally lose in exchange for being able to feed this kind of transformation totally arbitrary data. And despite, or perhaps _because of_ those obvious technical limitations it still scares me. Because afaict the only _practical_ application for this tech right _now_ is still probably as an enforcement mechanism to try to retroactively prove whether or not someone did piracy. Which just makes me have dystopian visions of a future where your phone first checks for a corresponding certificate on your file system before ever playing any media stream. Or something. It’s gross. Yeah, I steal digital content sometimes. But I also pay for it. Sometimes. Really prefer if content _distributors_ don’t get to exert any more control over how I consume it than they already do. Don’t ask, don’t tell, UMG, you wouldn’t like what you’d hear from me. Sigh. I guess even if they did eventually start being used as actual proof of purchase, it’s just another turn of the wheel. Napster came and went. The pirate bay is still around. Games publishers come up with more advanced DRMs with every blockbuster release to make sure they can sell copies, incur enormous technical debt, degrade the end-user experience for legitimate players, and they still eventually end up cracked eventually. UA-cam is here, but maybe one day playing content on YT free of charge will be gone as well. All the measures can or will ever do is make it more expensive or inconvenient to get the content illicitly, not impossible. Despite their very best efforts you can pretty arbitrarily pirate music just by emulating the way that UA-cam decodes media streams in your browser (which is a good deal more complicated than strictly necessary for playback or persistent storage), remultiplexing or resampling it into your favorite container format, and then writing the resulting stream to disk after attaching the corresponding meta-data, and you get a lossless copy of the same version being bought and sold by people who would rather you pay money in exchange for the convenience and the privilege of supporting the creation of digital art. And for me, that’s a triumphant reality, not one I want to see going away because we gave capital the ability to exert actual complete and total control over how we make copies of things in addition to how we eat, think, and feel. Not also my voice, not my ears. Can I have those at least? Please.
But it shouldn't, and he wouldn't like it. He said some time ago that you should have multiple sources, and not solely rely on a few people for your information.

I think the worst case of NFTs I saw was when people were stealing and selling Qinni’s art. You know, the very very beloved artist who tragically passed away not all that long ago. Her own sibling had to come forward and beg people to stop. It’s genuinely heartbreaking
They fucking dared???????
I didn't know that! That's awful! Her art is so lovely and she was such a sweet person. It's sad that someone would take advantage like that.
That breaks my heart. It's so sad...
That just enrages me. That's disgusting.
I'm either too old or too dense to understand
and with that mindset you and the other dude on here won't ever be worth anything, being noble doesn't get you to where you want and I bet if your art went for millions in nft you'd jump on it.
no one gives 2 fucks
Before I had an understanding of what NFTs are, I thought, “So they’re spending money on things that are free?” Now that I understand them, I’m like, “Oh, so they’re spending money on things that are free.”
XD
Correction, they are spending money on electrical waste and environmental damage... (
It’s basically “ha I have something that you don’t AND I’m destroying the environment for it”
@@thegreendragon9628 more like “ha im spending money on something you got for free AND im damaging the environment to do it
I read that in two totally different voices in my head lmao thank you
Yeah there is already an ecologically sustainable way to support artists: it's called commissioning them and buying their prints lmao
Agreed -- what's wrong w paying artists for their work directly instead of this weird NFT thing?
that was my exact thought like why are we acting like you cant make many in other ways than NFT🤦🏻♀️
And that's before bringing Patreon and Ko-Fi into the discussion.

Can you imagine standing outside Target, after you just bought AirPods, and selling the receipt for your AirPods for more than you paid for the headphones? Because that’s basically what NFTs are.
But no one would place any value on that receipt and you wouldn’t be able to sell it again. With an actual NFT you could.

Additionally, some sites actually REQUIRE money in order to go forth with the creation of an NFT, which is 😬😬😬
Do yourself a favor and do commissions and prints and stickers instead, it’s a way better use of your time, and it does NOTHING to harm the environment at all!
I thought in my mind “I could buy a house for me and my family”
And offtopic, this Nft thing kinda reminds me of the only fans situation

Saaame. I originally saw him draw but he's so good at tea I forgot he was talented. Ususlly commentsry channels dont have any talent
The first video I ever saw of his was him following WLOP’s tutorial and I had no idea it was the same person years later lol
Got wild throwbacks to his art channel no face voice-only era 😭
8:44 “It’s time to throw humanity away”
you heard him bois, let’s go, pack it all up! humanity is cancelled! we had a good run...
The one time cancel culture is good
It was an okay run at best. Like, we had it in the first half and really phoned it in at the end. B+ for effort.
@@SamRabbitx we didn't even have it in the first half. We fumbled the entire way through. It was a mediocre run.
Let's return to monke...seriously🥲

That font hurts me
I spent hours and days to create my own font as a graphic designer, just to get a note from the teacher, and there comes someone, draws some random letters and becomes a millionarie😭🔫
At least ARCA is a renowned music producer. But that still does not make an excuse for that dogcrap she calls a font. She isn't even selling the font, just a piece of paper she scanned in a computer.
The “bye youtube” in the chats is so wholesome
followed by chat saying they were held hostage 😭 gotta love it
D'Angelo : ending the video
The chat : "GUYS IT'S A CULT HELP! I'VE BEEN KIDNAPPED!!!"

the cash me outside NFT ad looks like an intro for a documentary 😭😭
A shane dawson 'documentary', at that.
@@ToastyJunebugs This was my first thought too! 😂😂
the _correct_ way to do NFTs would just be to use them as a means of digitally obfuscating content so that it physically _can’t be consumed_ until you buy it.
Please.
Honestly hes my personal news station at this point.
But it shouldn't, and he wouldn't like it. He said some time ago that you should have multiple sources, and not solely rely on a few people for your information.
@@AldanFerrox that is very true and it was a joke. Relying on one person for all your knowledge about whats currently happening is a disaster waiting to happen lol

He literally just did that in the video...
i really appreciate how angel is educating all his younger viewers and in an entertaining way
And his older viewers :)
All of your videos are so well-researched, witty, and easy to follow. There are not enough reaction/education videos that go through the effort to actually pull up the numbers and evidence and actually go through the details like you do. Really glad I found your channel, dude! Hope you keep the content coming :)

DW, i really admire how yu brake things down on ur channel and xplain the issues of ur topics, its very relateable and interesting to listen to you do this. the patience yu have is great bc i could not do it. ur better than the news broad casters in my opinion. ur channel is professional and when i do come over to ur channel and listen i have not heard no cussing ,bullying, lying or back stabbing , you are just my first choice of my go to channel when i want to catch up to what is happening on people ,places and things. dont ever change and keep up the good work. it would be real neet some day - one day we followers could see you interviewing singers, rappers, actors, and acctreses ,producers on the red carpet. yu definately would be better then what they have.
I completely forgot d’angelo used to be an art drama channel. That’s when I followed him

Seye, the bassist for the actual Gorillaz band, confirmed it was not something Damon or Jamie (singer and artist) had approved. Afaik they now have pulled back and aren't doing any NFT's now or in the future.
My current problem is them having collabed with superplastic (for figurines), who made NFTs and went through with it.
Seye did say that, but it’s concerning that there has been no official statement on the NFTs, considering the backlash & how they were announced in a press release. I think the closest confirmation to a pull back is the Instagram Account responding to a comment, saying the following: “We hear [the complaints] We love our planet and we’re thinking of cool stuff that people might like - but we haven’t crossed to the other side. Sometimes stories run away with themselves.” I don’t like the tone and the vagueness tbh, but there’s that. Not NFT related but it’s funny seeing the self-proclaimed enemies of celebrity/inauthenticity screwed over by a PR mess lol. Anyway stream Blur
