      No disrespect to your grandfather but though it's a nice and widely held believe trope but in actuality in the real world it's completely false. Politicians aren't aliens from Mars that are completely detached from their surrounding environment, they come from and represent the society itself. The politicians are criminals precisely because the society is criminal. The politicians are corrupt precisely because the society is corrupt. It's easy to blame it on a visible public figure and it's convenient to exonerate ourselves as the source of the problem.
      Likewise it's easy to glorify the mob until you find yourself as a victim of their actions.

    The politicians said, "Oh no, we'd never do that. That's not what this law is written for. This law allows us to take the drug dealers money and use it against the drug dealer."

    "Rights aren't rights if someone can take them away." - George Carlin. Unfortunately most people don't think of the overall implications of allowing goverment the power to break the law (the way RICO does or the Patriot Act etc.). It's hard to feel empathy for career criminals getting 100 years in prison but the principle should count above all and should apply to everyone.

      Either you give everyone rights and allow crime , racism and corruption to fester, or you get a warrant from a judge showing reasonable need for it.
      It's not taking away their rights, it's trying to stop crime hiding behind that kind of rights.
      When you look at certain state governments they are not allowing American citizens to vote for flimsy reasons- how about restoring those rights?

    • @methosimortal
      @methosimortal 3 роки тому +5

      @@SantomPh I'm sorry but it's that kind of thinking that has gotten the US in the state it is today. you are allowing the government to take away your rights in order to fight boogeymen they themselves have invented most of the time (see the Patriot Act). I'm not going to spend my time crying over career criminals going to jail by any means but whenever a law is instituted to curtail rights, it eventually filters down to everyone, not just the limited group of people it was initially intended for.
      Also, the US already has one of the most draconian criminal systems in the developed world and that hasn't stopped you guys from also having one of the highest criminal rates in the world. Injustice breeds injustice.

      Hey, that's how I got hooked! Had watched "The Godfather Saga" prior and the UA-cam algorithm kept putting up PBD interviews as recommendations. I finally watched the Gianni Russo one because it supposedly discussed how organized crime hated "The Godfather."
      I was buying Mr. Russo's tall tales until he said he slept with Marilyn Monroe when he was 16. That's when I took my grain of salt.
      But yeah, Patrick Bet-David still gets a visit from me. I have to brace for the hour-plus sit-downs, but they're all informative. And I did sit through the Sammy Gravano interview - twice.
      That's why Franzese and Gravano are among my top five preferences. I've lost track of The History Guy and Lindybeige.
      Good comment!

    Hi Michael, I completely agree with your thoughts on Government over-reach. I'm an ex-Detective (in New Zealand), when I graduated from Police College (You'd call it "the Academy"), my District Commander (very high ranking guy) met with all his new cops. He asked us 'What is the most important thing for Police?' A few of us mumbled various answers, I said "Accountability Sir!", because I believe that. He made me stand up and repeat it, initially I thought I'd messed up. Noooooo, I'd hit the nail on the head; he was very happy with my answer and wanted every one of us to understand that accountability is what prevents an arm of the Government from over-reaching; be it Tax, Crime, Immigration, Health, etc.
    Anyway, keep doing what you're doing Michael. Really enjoy your videos.

It's good to see you so worked up about government overreach, and you're 100% right. I lived in New Haven, CT when the SDNY lawyers came up to try a gang case in New Haven that was literally practice for using the RICO statues on Cosa Nostra. The prosecutors wanted a dress rehearsal before the big show, so they did in it New Haven. The defense attorney, who was a well known guy and a great attorney, after the trial said something like, 'You could convict a can of Coke for murder with these laws because the Coke was in the wrong house.' The RICO statues have become a stand in for just what you say, 'We know that guy committed some crime, so we'll just convict him for the general state of being a criminal.'
