So important for beginners to start to learn by ear and build that foundation that will help down the line, learning to separate the notes that you hear in order to build the chords of a song, and listening for little intricacies and such.

It does sound like something that could've been on Ronnie's I've Got My Own Album to Do, one of my favorite albums

How should I start learning by ear. Seems hard

Great advice. Older players remember having to work out songs. Having that skill, even in an imperfect way, also helps when we're learning songs with today's resources.

Your impression is spot on ,you have a natural ear for Keith's nuances. Sometimes tough for people to duplicate. I often wonder if people can hear what I hear..

Keith would never allow it. I get the feeling that's why this was never released at the time.

Some background: Recorded October 5, 1974, according to a YT interview with Mick from this past week. Mick dubbed maracas onto the track recently (from same interview). Per Felix Aeppli, song was composed by Keith and the players on the original session were KR: guitar, vocals; Jimmy Page: guitar; Ian Stewart: piano; Rick Grech: bass; Bruce Rowland. Overdubs followed in November 1974. You can read Felix account of the track here: aeppli.ch/Stones/TUGKeithUp.pdf - Felix has the session (incorrectly) as October 15, 1974. Wondering if Mick's vocal is contemporary as well. It sounds really good whenever he recorded it. Maybe MJ wrote most of the lyrics recently, too? Love the channel!

That Mick interview I mentioned is here: ua-cam.com/video/hM0L8vfKeN8/v-deo.html. I'm taking the session date off the tape box which flies by at some point in the video.

Joel Fragomeni Strange if it was recorded in 74 that they would release it with Goats Head Soup & not wait for some future It’s Only Rock N Roll deluxe edition.

The song is very Houses of Holy - Page did the heavy lifting in the studio. Keith laid the riff and Mick remastered it for 2020 - this is all Page influence and most probably for Ronnie Wood's solo album. Either way who gives a fuck its a killer track. Been listening to it all day and its been in my head ever since I heard it. Rock on chaps

Ronnie was not there. He was on tour, that’s for sure. Keith was living there for a few months. Yes it looks like this for Ronnie’s album. Even the recording was done for IORR, that album came out maybe 2 weeks after this recording with Jimmy Page about 17 or 18 of October 1974. This recording seemed to be done October the 5th of 1974

Yes you got the dates right, from what Mick was saying . And yeah I've got my own album to do was recorded in Ronnie's basement . Alot of talent showed up including David Bowie , Keith Moon, Mick Taylor and now we know Page was there too. Keith is on most those tracks singing backing vocals and playing guitar. Mick is also on "Can you feel the fire" and I think I hear him in the mix of "Am I grooving you". Fantastic album. That band "The new barbarians " was great . Willie Weeks , Ian Mclagan and Andy Newmark.

Good job, Mr. Tufnel. Definitely after GHS, maybe for IORNR, but you are probably right, for Woody's album. My only question is whether there was any overdubbing done to it - new vocals etc like they have done for some of the Exile bonus tracks. You are correct - Page's work was restrained which suits the song perfectly. Imagine the -ahem- substances that must have been flowing at that session in '74 with Keith, Jimmy and Ronnie. I'm getting a contact high from just listening to it. Keep up the excellent work!!!!

Great ear! I couldn’t even notice the low G note playing til you pointed it out. Though you can make the argument that even though Keith is playing in open G it’s better to play in standard since the main riff is only the middle 3 strings, and then you can play full minor chords on the chorus.

Yes from all information available it was recorded in 74. Most likely for Woody’s album. Since this would have ended up on Its Only Rock and Roll if it was released I think Mick pushed it to goats head since I seems like it was mostly complete. I do hear some of modern mick on the track but not really during the verses and choruses.
I really don’t think there are many nuggets to mine from for Its only rock and roll, unless the release the full uncut Mick Taylor solo on Time Waits for No one. Doubtful.

This is your big moment to wear a conflicting shirt and guitar! It's like a mix of Hey Negrita, Monkey Man, Ron Wood's I Can Feel The Fire, and The Black Crowes Gone and Conspiracy. I think it's a great song. I just don't consider it the Stones, like Memo from Turner. The only Stones thing about it is Mick's voice. Well, according to Mr Fragomeni below, Keith is also on it. And great job, by the way. I forget if you have Dumbo ears or have the master plugged straight into your brain.

C cross is definitely in open g too. And you’re definitely right about the dates. If you listen to the BBC recent radio interview with page and mick on this song, they give all the dates and details about the recording. 1974 in woods basement. They included it on GHS reissue because well it’s near the time period, and they needed new material (awesome song). And doubt the stones will ever do a IORR reissue.

You think it's the Tele neck bucker? I was thinking a P90 maybe. I could tell it was in Open G right away too. It then became obvious it was in E. I couldn't nail that riff like you did. I thought it was a typical Keef sus chord. Nice work. Page has the houses of the holy album guitar sound going on.
