All these coconut by-products come from Thailand and surrounding areas. Exporting chips is relatively new, before then all of this was turned into charcoal for tradition charcoal bbqs or activated charcoal for making other filtration products (IIRC, Brita filters use activated charcoal derived from coconut). I've been trying to find cheaper bulk alternatives but their availability fluctuates wildly. FB is not cost effective for where I live. I don't need a lot but I like to have a lot on hand for my plants and my small collection of animals. I use the coir(e, fines) mainly as a peat alternative when repotting my tropical plants. Thanks for sharing your experience, Jason!
@@JasonsExoticReptiles I'm stuck north of the border for the foreseeable future: FB doesn't really have a stable supplier network up here, and what we do have is only really available at conventions (which have not happened in over a year). Even pure cypress is drying up. :\
Thank you for the knowledge you constantly give me! I do not know you personally (obviously), but you just come across as such a real dude. Keep the videos coming my dude
Yeah! The cypress absorbs some moisture from the cocoblox..but together they dont get too dry or too humid...and I can always bump the humidity if I need to.
Hey Jason do you know if I can get this product in the United Kingdom as I have been looking everywhere man I hope you can help with this Jason 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻👍👍👍👍👍
Question. I get back to Springfield once a year or so. When, we visit in a few months again, can the wife and I possibly come check out your collection?
As much as I would love it unfortunately, I do not allow people into where I keep the stuff. Mainly for security Reasons and for the overall health of the animals.
I love Freedom breeder products but my spare cocoblox I had in the tub for tub changes or new snakes had some serious mold- in 2 weeks. not sure if that was my fault for wetting the whole block and then throwing the non used in a plastic tub with the lid on or what the deal was. so going to give reptichip a try this time around
Honestly my all around favorite substrate for snakes is still paper towels, unprinted newspaper, brown paper, Repti-Zorb, & CMC Reptile- Liners... Too be perfectly honest most of my snakes have had their absolute BEST sheds when I was using paper substrates... Yes it does have cons such as constantly cleaning and replacing paper for sanitary reasons but if you know how too utilize and keep up the humidity for snakes that require it without using the more expensive beddings I personally think it's the all around most economical and sanitary way too go! Only exception for other substrates is Zoo-Meds blocks as I do provide humidity boxes and fill them with Zoo-Med's Eco🌎Earth substrate for Viper Boas as they love 💕 burrowing into it! I've tried all the other substrates and for the most part〽️I prefer📜paper🗞️!!!😁👍😎💪🐍
I do not. I now use gaps coco instead of freedom breeder and purchase direct from the supplier so there really isn’t any chance of anything in there that can harm reptiles. So in short, I guess it depends where you get it from.
You don't have to wait hours or a day for repti chip or any other cocoproduct to expand.,add some water to it stab it up with a knife and you can have it broken apart and under 5 minutes Either way thank you for the review Love you vids
I do not. There is no reason. I get the bedding direct from supplier so it never sees a snake. The only reason there would be reptile mites in the bedding is if the person you bough from had mites and they hitched a ride
@@JasonsExoticReptiles Im thinking of getting a shaker when i move and doing that. Undercut the pet stores and help some people save some $ while making $ on your waste lol or you can just give it away if its not enough or just takes more time than its worth to sell. Just some ideas bro!
Well I use reptichip my retics enjoy digging and burrowing. I enjoy the overall consistency. Though yeah I do find the expansion sucks though I don't have a bunch of snakes.
@@JasonsExoticReptiles everything has give take. As with stuff you can accept or reject. I like it for keeping humidity cause we're such a dry state. Have to get my sprinkler system going though gonna get 9 levels of flack for it.
Thanks for the review. I been using reptichip the past year and just ordered and received freedom breeder cocoblox and just like how chunky the chips are compared to reptichip. I wish there was a local dealer of cocoblox where I live. All we have is a guy that sells pro coco and that is my least favorite to, small of chip for me.
I couldn’t afford the cocoblox sifter so I drilled holes in the bottom of a container & put the lid on & shake & bake ! Works great getting the smaller bits & dust out👍🏻
Jason.. it looks like ur in the Hartford area.. Im in branford, if I come there to buy some cocoblox can I hold a big snake? I never held a big one.. my 2 are babies still..
Mainly for security reasons I don't let people come directly here. I'm just not set up for it. With that said, usually after I meet people a few times I get a feel for them, we become friends and I eventually just have them come by. I used to do what you are asking until one clown tried to come back later that week and break in.
Maybe you can answer my question are Burmese pythons still illegal in Connecticut or did they fix that I read the current bill I saw a reticulated pythons African rock pythons I didn't see anything about Burmese pythons am I just missing something I live in CT back when they first introduced it I rehomed my Burmese along with my reticulated pythons cuz I was afraid they're going to euthanize them if I got caught once they passed the bill back then now I'm just confused about what even illegal in this state
That's what I figured man LOL getting a new rack system in a couple of weeks from sea serpents may be interested in some of your Coco block from what you're saying it sounds like what I'm looking for do you have contact info on your website so I can email you at some point
To be fair, I don't think that your sifted fines in the shaker table is an accurate representation of the Prococo product. It would be better to actually show that product, IMO. But great video otherwise, and thanks for all the detail and the expansion demo.
I personally do Aspen, because I humidify my whole room. After this season, however, I'm moving into my basement. (1000'² plus the tortoises) otherwise 1300'². Haha. I may have to shift to keeping humidity high in the cages. Great points, may have to talk more after my breeding season in Colorado is over.
Hey Jason! I'm about to pick up a male corn snake and was wondering what you'd recommend as far as substrates go? I plan on using CocoBlox for when I get my boa but is there a better alternative specifically for corns?
Freedom breeders coco chips are way to big to me I like repti chip much more and that’s all I use for all 120 boas of mine and coco blocks are almost like rocks in your tubs because there just to big, repti chip is where it’s at
@@JasonsExoticReptiles I’m gonna have to try freedom breeder again because maybe I got a bad batch, keep up the great work Jason and I really want to get a Sunglow and moonglow and A Suriname from you

It was likely too wet, but I did get a few blocks in the past order that got moldy quickly. I’d say that is the exception rather than the normal
Do you think aspen bedding with a humidity box will work? That's what I use for my corn and bp

Thanks for the video. The package says 100% organic. Since when is plastic organic??
Haha I'm assuming it's because the places these come from are just wild grown cocos.
Do you freeze your cocoblox before using ?
Do I have to do that or can I just use, they say on freedom breeder to freeze incase bugs?

My personal experience is that the reptichip seemed super compressed and took a while to break up, but maybe I just got a super compressed few blocks
Do you add any preventative Mite spray on a new bag of COCOBLOCK before installing in the cages
I do not. There is no reason. I get the bedding direct from supplier so it never sees a snake. The only reason there would be reptile mites in the bedding is if the person you bough from had mites and they hitched a ride
You might let the fines build up and package it to sell to local people who do need a finer substrate.
I usually give them away to arachnid keepers when they come by, but could totally relax and sell

Any issues with mold?
No major issues. Sometimes under the water bowl there will be a moldy block but nothing bad
Can you do a video on Costa Rican Boas I have a baby one but not much info on it.
Whats up dude, how's the new snake room? Everything going good 👍
All is 100%!!!
How sturdy is the shaker jason? I'm gonna have to put sheet metal screw in mine to keep sturdy
Mine is as sold as can be. Super high quality
Soooo, what cleaning solution do you use? :)
I use bleach. When I over scoop, any mess I will wipe with a bleach rag.
I used to build soil with a lot of coco and any compressed coco product is pretty much the same thing just like you’re saying
