    Very good points. Old Gothic vets are asking this question now for many many years. How can it be that a 25 year old game is still counted as one of the best rpgs ever created. Sadly not even the developers could anwser this question propperly which leads to following games that just couldn't compete with the great Gothic 1. But just to be clear. Gothic 2 was also a great game. I personaly see them as one game.
    Something what many modern developers should finaly implement is reusing the old engine and building a follow up game on it like Gothic 2 did. This will give them so much more time to work on world and story.

    • @craftofambience2
      @craftofambience2  7 днів тому +1

      Yeah 100% agree. I often feel like Gothic 3 could have been so much better if they had just sticked with the old engine and improved it. I would have much rather taken a smaller world and a few loading screens here and there than the G3 engine that ended up feeling kind of floaty and had weird animations : /
      I guess this would've also saved them all the performance trouble they had on release with people hardly being able to run the game at decent settings.

  • @balduinvontrier128
    @balduinvontrier128 7 днів тому +1

    Yes, I'm glad someone mentioned the readable social hierarchies as an important corner stone! They're so awesome. You could show everybody, who played the game for 15 hours any new NPC and the player would know which rank the NPC would have, how he would interact with wich other NPCs, where he could pop up, how the player would interact with him, how hard it would be to fight him and whom to tell when you get problems with him.
    And that makes the armour system so much better. You have better armour, yes, but first and foremost you moved up the ladder. And you get to go to new places, because there are parts of the world that you are forbidden from at the beginning.
    This social hierarchy is a major aprt of the immersion, the progressionand, in a way, the sence of place. But most essays miss it completely.

    • @craftofambience2
      @craftofambience2  4 дні тому +1

      Yeah very true! It's kinda funny how simple it is to use this sort of reward structure around the armors and belonging to a certain camp or faction just form a technical point of view, yet no one else does it the same kind of way and in a lot of RPGs you just randomly find a better armor somewhere in a chest :p

  • @ergohash2517

    Fantastic video. I just recently replayed Gothic 1 after probably a decade of not touching it and got reminded of how unique it is. While technically G2 is probably a better game with a sum of its parts, G1 has a much more fresh and unique setting and vibe and novelty, even to its story, which really helps with immersion. Chapter 1 was an absolute top tier peak gothic experience, getting accustomed and mastering this new world, but my main complaint tho was the lack of content/quests/dialogue and reactions from NPCs after chapter 1. Characters have nothing to say in the second part of the story, nothing to comment on the unfolding events even when they should've and them doing so should be a big pillar of immersion, to make a believable world . Mike Hoge said recently that most of the actual game content for G1 was created in the last 6 months of development or something like this and it definitely shows. Thats why I hope the remake will fill up the world and especially characters dialogue/interactions in the second part of the story and add new quests to keep chapters fresh and the world more immersive and believable.

    • @craftofambience2
      @craftofambience2  8 днів тому +2

      Yeah really well said, totally agree! Gothic 1 really has the edge in terms of it's uniqueness while G2 is kind of the "better" and more "finished" game overall (while slightly less unique).

The amount of effort you put in it is clear, hope you keep making more and that it is just the start :) A tiny criticism (and its purely because of my own personal preferences so do feel free to disregard it completely) - maybe tone down a little bit with the effect filters such as grain or light diffusion? Hey, first of all, great video. Collecting what is crucial and the video editing itself is top-notch. You summed up the essence of gothic very well. I think there are many reasons why The Witcher 3 had the HUD designed this way, but another video could be made about it :)
    I'm interested in video editing like yours. I have a few questions for you. I guess you are using Adobe After Effect and Premier Pro. Do you use any plugins to animate elements to speed up your work? Where can I learn how to edit a video like yours? Thanks in advance for Your answer

    • @craftofambience2

      Yeah with the underlying lore of the witcher books they had a lot more to incorporate feature wise (potions, oils etc) so I totally get why they went the way they did with the Hud.
      Yes you're correct it's done with After Effects and Premiere Pro. There aren't many plugins at play here apart from Deep Glow and a Depth Pass plugin (for bluring backgrounds). The rest is just years of experience with this sort of stuff I'm afraid :p Maybe I will make some sort of course on how I work on this stuff in the future for patreons or whatever. But not sure if there is enough intersted for it though. (Would be a lot of work to make some sort of course)

    My hypothesis is that not only Gothic 3 and their other games weren't that good, compared to Gothic 1 & 2, they also came out after WoW vanilla. I think that vanilla WoW was really a breaking point in RPG gaming, with its smooth gameplay, social aspects, large open world with almost no loading screens and great lore. You might not like it, but nobody can't deny that it was the first step that brought gaming to masses. Gothic 1 & 2 just also had that great nostalgia feeling (apart from being obviously well designed) and those other games suddenly started to feel clunky and weird compared to other great games of the RPG genre.

    • @craftofambience2
      @craftofambience2  4 дні тому

      Yeah totally. I think the whole WoW Artstyle was hugely influental. The Orcs of the Remake for example always kind of remind me a bit of that with the massive spikes on their armor etc.
      And a massive section of the casual market (especially on mobile) often feels very WoW influenced in how they design weapons and armor etc. (Overly large etc)
      Unfortunately the more down to earth and gritty style of the early Gothic games is not quite as popular :/

    • @martysonn
      @martysonn 4 дні тому

      @@craftofambience2 Yea that's prolly true, WoW is that kind of (overly)pronounced fantasy that definitely influenced many others.
      But I was talking more about the game feeling and the gameplay itself. It's incredibly well polished and fluent even by today's standards, and it came out at 2004! I think that was the main thing why WoW became so insanely popular and why other games suddenly felt kinda weird.
