The (secret) immersion formula of Gothic 1 | mini Documentary
With Gothic 1 Piranha Bytes managed to create a game that is still considered a blueprint for an immersive RPG experience by fans even 20 years later. In this small mini documentary I go into detail about how the original dev team around Mike Hoge managed to create something that the later Pyrana Bytes team seemingly chased for years and years, but where never able to truly replicate with their later games. Hope you guys dig it! :)

02:43 - The importance of world structure and size
03:53 - Communicating power visually (instead of numbers)

What if the Gothic Remake was more faithful to the original?

An exploration of what some of the character and monster designs could look like if the remake was more faithful to the exact design decision made in the original. G1 & 2 are still my favourite RPGs of all time. This docu pretty much nailed why. Normaly i don't like fenzy shit and cuts, but your artstyle is very unique and enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!
Wow Man that editing is brilliant! Amazing job about amazing game subscribed for sure❤
As a Gothic fanatic since I was a kid, thank you.
NICE VIDEO, i suggest u do a video comparison of all the gothic series and also risen 1 is good also the story of CDRP and how they were inspired by gothic 1 to make the witcher keep going dont stop making videos and im sure u will gain more subs in no time
Yo that editing is crazy, nice content man
Thank you for this wonderful video! Your approach to creating content really impressed me ! These decorations with NPCs and your story telling looks so fresh and new for me who's been interested in Gothic theme for so long! Keep going !)
Cool video as someone who’s making rpg game myself I love this kind of videos, it’s a great source of inspiration! :D
Dude, your video editing is superb. How do you only have 420 subs? This is 300k+ content. Immediate sub!
thats some real good content there! Very good! Keep up the good work! Gothic never dies!
Gothic is a masterclass in game design.
Damn, I usually skip videos with less than 1k subscribers cause the quality isnt usually the best but this was amazing. Im not even a gothic fan or anything and this was my first time hearing about the game but i stayed throughout the entire video. Extremely high quality and a lot of work was put into this. Subscribed
Ludos.
Wow. Not only do you analyze the main pillars of Gothic's success beautifully, this is also an impressively crafted video. Visuals, editing and audio design are stunning. Well done! Top-notch quality.
Thanks Kai!! Very happy to hear! Means a lot coming from you. ❤️ Your Soundtracks where actually the reason I started getting interested in sound design stuff, so super excited to hear the Remake Soundtrack!
Awesome vid and discussion! I gave every comment a thumbs-up!
Legend! Thx for your support! 🙏🙏
That’s one of the best editing I’ve seen. The last point was so true, I remember when I was a child, I used to imagine with my brother what happened when the Old camp attacked the New Camp, or what happened in the old mine. That was something special
Very true! I kind of forgot about that aspect. The old mine and attack on the free mine are super interesting to imagine :o
Bravo! Great Video!
🙏
My hypothesis is that not only Gothic 3 and their other games weren't that good, compared to Gothic 1 & 2, they also came out after WoW vanilla. I think that vanilla WoW was really a breaking point in RPG gaming, with its smooth gameplay, social aspects, large open world with almost no loading screens and great lore. You might not like it, but nobody can't deny that it was the first step that brought gaming to masses. Gothic 1 & 2 just also had that great nostalgia feeling (apart from being obviously well designed) and those other games suddenly started to feel clunky and weird compared to other great games of the RPG genre.
Yeah totally. I think the whole WoW Artstyle was hugely influental. The Orcs of the Remake for example always kind of remind me a bit of that with the massive spikes on their armor etc. And a massive section of the casual market (especially on mobile) often feels very WoW influenced in how they design weapons and armor etc. (Overly large etc) Unfortunately the more down to earth and gritty style of the early Gothic games is not quite as popular :/
@@craftofambience2 Yea that's prolly true, WoW is that kind of (overly)pronounced fantasy that definitely influenced many others. But I was talking more about the game feeling and the gameplay itself. It's incredibly well polished and fluent even by today's standards, and it came out at 2004! I think that was the main thing why WoW became so insanely popular and why other games suddenly felt kinda weird.
And the sea released the land. And there arose all creatures. Trees as well as animals. Wolves as well as sheep. And a guy with 300 subs making top quality content 🧐
😁✌️
the quality of the editing is insane🔥
The fact that using cheats you can swap bodies with NPCs, even animals, and just pilot them is outstanding.
Yeah I always found that part mindblowing as a Kid haha. Running around for hours as all sorts of monsters.
Finding those small camps and not knowing if they are friendly or not was amazing for that time. Not to mention how frightening it was to go hunting in the woods and feeling completely lost, until you meet a shadow beast .
Oh yeah 100%. The world always felt very believable and lively. Especially the woods.
I prefer AI Gomez to remake, but I prefer remake Milten to AI Milten.
Thanks for making content about Gothic and also in a such unique way. Love it!
Cheers T-Moor! Glad you're liking it!
It’s pretty impressive, that you can create something new and fresh about a game over two decades old. I was fascinated by your approach and thoughts. One thing though- the music is a bit distracting IMHO, keep it down please. You don’t need it, your narrative is enough
I don't think I'll ever get bored of gothic analysis videos, so I'm glad I've found this channel. Do you have any specific plans on what to cover next? BTW, what's the story behind your avatar if I may ask? It looks intriguing.
I've started to write a couple of new scripts for the next videos :) mostly about the early days of PB, Mike Hoge's design approach and also a few thoughts on why Piranha Bytes didn't survive etc. Excited to share more soon!
Great editing OP, keep it up! Gothic peak
Cheers! ❤️
Yes, I'm glad someone mentioned the readable social hierarchies as an important corner stone! They're so awesome. You could show everybody, who played the game for 15 hours any new NPC and the player would know which rank the NPC would have, how he would interact with wich other NPCs, where he could pop up, how the player would interact with him, how hard it would be to fight him and whom to tell when you get problems with him. And that makes the armour system so much better. You have better armour, yes, but first and foremost you moved up the ladder. And you get to go to new places, because there are parts of the world that you are forbidden from at the beginning. This social hierarchy is a major aprt of the immersion, the progressionand, in a way, the sence of place. But most essays miss it completely.
Yeah very true! It's kinda funny how simple it is to use this sort of reward structure around the armors and belonging to a certain camp or faction just form a technical point of view, yet no one else does it the same kind of way and in a lot of RPGs you just randomly find a better armor somewhere in a chest :p
Interestingly, a lot of these points you could also apply to Ultima, especially Ultima VII, for example the NPCs have schedules and animations and function like the player, and there is no mini-map nor quest markers.
Intersting, I've never played any of the ultima games but I think I remember the Gothic devs mentioning them as inspirations?
Great video. Crazy that it's only your second video. I could swear you are a big youtuber as good as this video is
Thanks! Glad to hear! Yeah it's probably because even though I haven't been active that much on youtube I've got a lot of experience with editing and animation stuff from other fields. (Television and advertisments etc)
ok what AI voice your using, i heard this voice in another video. REAL GOOD VOICE, eleven labs?
Yeah I'm using eleven labs but it's a clone that's trained on my own voice. (Improves my english pronounciation a bit since I'm not a native speaker)
deep dave?
More polish game than Witcher
Glorious brother in Innos! I see you quite understand the core elements of the perfection that is Gothic!
Came from amazing background music stayed for even more amazing analysis keep it up :)
Thanks for the support on both channels!! 💪
Thanks for the great feedback and all the comments so far!! Very happy the video is having such a good reception🙏🏻. Really excited to create more Gothic content now! By the way if you are ever in the mood for some simple *Gothic* gameplay you can do casually on the side then come check out the custom *Gothic 2 roleplay and economy system* that I built specifically for my Gothic themed Discord Server! There you can climb up the ranks and guilds of Gothic 2 while building up your wealth and unlocking better and better quest rewards. From becoming an apprentice, to joining the thieves guild to finally becoming a Paladin, Fire Mage or Dragon Hunter. 💪 Also anyone managing to acquire 1 mio gold coins within this Gothic 2 server system will also be memorialized in the server hall of fame! 😁 *See you there!* discord.com/invite/hXzV4vrdB8
The music is too loud for me
Cheers for sharing, will take into account for the next one.
@@craftofambience2 it was great for me, but I wear good headphones
This video was awesome as well, what AI did you use to help create the imagery?
Cheers! This was mostly krea.ai being used here.
Great video, about a great game. I haven't played gothic until recently and when I did the game truly inspired me.
Well of course it does since its beautiful Polish game
Very good points. Old Gothic vets are asking this question now for many many years. How can it be that a 25 year old game is still counted as one of the best rpgs ever created. Sadly not even the developers could anwser this question propperly which leads to following games that just couldn't compete with the great Gothic 1. But just to be clear. Gothic 2 was also a great game. I personaly see them as one game. Something what many modern developers should finaly implement is reusing the old engine and building a follow up game on it like Gothic 2 did. This will give them so much more time to work on world and story.
Yeah 100% agree. I often feel like Gothic 3 could have been so much better if they had just sticked with the old engine and improved it. I would have much rather taken a smaller world and a few loading screens here and there than the G3 engine that ended up feeling kind of floaty and had weird animations : / I guess this would've also saved them all the performance trouble they had on release with people hardly being able to run the game at decent settings.
This is some next level editing! Absolutely loved it!
Cheers!! Much appreciated! 🙏
The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos is definitely the way for long-time Gothic fans to experience it the same way they did the originals more than 20 years ago.
Amazing content. Can relate to almost all the points presented. Keep the good work!
MFs with 200 subscribers putting out the highest quality video essays out there:
I've played the game so much back then before I discovered the second game. After watching this video I really have to replay it again
have you tried chronicles of myrtana archolos? basically new gothic 2 experience
Not yet! Wanted to give it a go for a long time but didn't really have the time unfortunately yet. One day though! 😃
I hope the developers of the G1 remake will take this into account.
Yeah I hope so as well. From what I've heard in some podcast appearances of the creative director of the remake they where doing their own sort of analysis of what makes the Gothic games what they are before they started with the remake. Let's hope they do it the right way 😃
Loved the video. Rewatched it 2 times just because of the editing and overall pace. Definitely sticking around and I can’t wait for more! ❤
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it and thx for the support!
Which AI you used?
Mostly Krea.ai
Awesome video and editing! I love the point about being on par with NPCs. Sometimes I just went to pub drink beer and chat, or in Swamp camp just stood with guys and smoked swampweed. I would love to see you cover Archolos as I find it interesting that they really managed to do most of the formulas right and in some aspects even supersede the quality of Gothic
Yeah totally! Haven't had the time to check out Archolos yet but it's definitely on my "to play" list ✌🏻
