Should the UK implement a 'tourism tax'?

  • Manchester's new 'tourism tax' of £1 per night per room is a relatively small price to pay, which might explain why this new idea has flown largely under the radar. Thank you to Julia for the interview, and to her husband, who was willing to wait around while Julia and I had our conversation.
'This month, Manchester is piloting a scheme to add a tourism tax for those staying in hotels in the city, with more areas of the UK considering adopting it. How would you feel about this scheme being implemented more widely?'

Doesn't really sound like a good idea to me, going to make UK destinations less competitive against overseas ones.
Nevertheless, props for going out and giving ordinary people a voice, Neil, you're a star.

Tourism tax for Manchester?. I wouldn't want to go back there if someone paid me. I prefer places that still resemble a British Town or city.

Call me cynical, but I very much doubt the funds raised will be used to provide a better experience for the tourist. More likely to be swallowed up in fulfilling one of Andy B's schemes of not the remotest value to those actually paying the tax.
The £1 sounds like the thin end of a much bigger wedge. Once accepted in principle I suspect it will be jacked up quite rapidly.

It will be siphoned off into the pockets of the councillors and politicians bank accounts!

You got that right. Once Joe Public is conned into paying £1, it'll be quickly abused to where it'll be suddenly "only" £12.50, to be wasted on more woke crap, or something instead of using the environmental Green lie.

to me she is a sheep like person. if the council said walk over that cliff with the government hinting to go walk in that direction from behind. the sheep people would just head towards that cliff automictically. she would follow the other sheeple over the cliff without stopping to think for one second. is this bad for me!
yes i do want the government to tax the living daylights out of me and i want them find knew and interesting ways that have never been done before to do it. i want them to tax the very air i breath and tax me for every step of ground i walk. knew and interesting ways to fiddle us out of our money. yes please love that idea, more tax more taxes, Yes Yes yes!

Yes, I worked in Manchester for 20 years and had to live there for the first 5 years and I would agree with you. It fits the old joke about a competition where 1st prize is a week's holiday in Manchester and 2nd prize is fortnight's holiday in Manchester...

We have this tax in Germany, the "Kurtaxe". It's also set at this sort of level and frankly, I have never resented paying it. The local people are paying for the services which as a visitor you also get to use - why begrudge such a modest levy? It has always been at this modest level and guests from Germany expect to pay it. In many cases (such as mine), the costs are borne by the employer anyway. The question is: how will this work for air b&b accommodation?

It would be interesting to compare the rates of other forms of taxation on hotels in the UK and Germany. I suspect that the business rates charged on hotels in Manchester are already a significant contributor to the funding of the area. Would it simply be easier to adjust the rates on the hotels to raise any extra funding rather than setting up a separate tax that will have significant costs to administer.

@@ColinMill1 So in Germany, the hotel owner must pay Grundsteuer to the local authority, which may or may not be similar to the UK council tax system. You're saying that these costs necessarily get passed on to the hotel guests as part of the overnight tariff, and that the guest is thereby sharing in the local infrastructure costs anyway. True, but the Kurtaxe (generic name: Ortstaxe) is there to involve the guest in specifically visitor-related infrastructure costs such as (and this is why I prefer the term Kurtaxe) spa installations. Some local authorities extend the tram system to visitor-only historic sights and pay for it (partially) out of the Kurtaxe. My experience is that this is NOT abused to pay for new underground systems etc.! (Probably illegal, we have a whole forest of stratutes) It's worth mentioning that the Kurtaxe also covers the (very slight) costs of visitor registration with the local authority, which I think in the UK doesn't happen. Finally, there are lots of places which don't levy a Kurtaxe at all.
