      Many of the lines closed by Beeching's report (they closed after he was replaced) were closed because they were underused because they did not go anywhere useful enough.
      HS2 is to relieve congestion on the over-used WCML, which was only upgraded at huge expense 2 years before HS2 was announced. The aim of HS2 is to take long distance services off but if a new line needs to be built, then why not build it to modern standards?

    • @piraterubberduck6056
      @piraterubberduck6056 10 місяців тому +2

      With the space needed between trains to allow for faster and slower trains to be on the same lines, the capacity is greatly reduced. HS2 will free up that space by moving the express trains off the existing lines. This will allow for more frequent and more reliable local trains.
      There is other work to be done, but HS2 is a part of the plan.

    • @TheSedition666
      @TheSedition666 10 місяців тому +1

      Taking fast trains off the old rail links allows more capacity for additional local trains. It is a major capacity increase across the North and Midlands even though it is marketed as High Speed because that is the sexier headline. Highly likely the Tories will announce new local connections and then just drop those as well. They constantly do it with Midlands rail where they have announced and then cancelled electrification of the line a good 4 times in the last decade. They are just going to use the saved money to give millionaires inheritance tax breaks.

It is all to say that national infrastructure projects are being done like the “smart motorways” that are now apparently considered more dangerous. All the while the rest is crumbling around us. The north west alone has a £50 billion deficit which is about half of the whole UK's deficit - the north has been living massively beyond its means for decades but northern demands for ever more spending never stop. Burnham has been lavished with subsidies and central government grants for years. At this point the north needs to forced to only be allowed to spend the taxes it can raise from its own taxpayers. Want rail transport? Then pay for it yourself. You'll soon find out how much things really cost.

All those heavy industries in the south that created all the wealth during the 19th and 20th centuries, while the agricultural north just produced crap beer and cider. Thank goodness for the south. All those heavy weapons produced in Kent saved the uk during a decade of conflict!! Well done, the south....our heroes!
