“Video game soundtracks have become an integral part of the gaming experience, transporting players into immersive worlds and enhancing the overall gameplay. Two iconic examples that showcase the power of video game music are the soundtracks for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and Twisted Metal.
The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 soundtrack is widely regarded as one of the best in gaming history, featuring a diverse mix of punk, ska, and hip-hop tracks that perfectly captured the rebellious spirit of the franchise. Songs like "Superman" by Goldfinger and "You" by Bad Religion have become staples of the series, resonating with players and cementing the game's status as a cultural phenomenon.
Similarly, the Twisted Metal series is renowned for its intense, adrenaline-fueled soundtracks that complement the high-octane vehicular combat. The original Twisted Metal's soundtrack, with its heavy metal and industrial influences, set the tone for the series' dark and gritty atmosphere, while later installments continued to deliver memorable musical compositions that enhanced the gameplay experience.
These examples demonstrate the profound impact that video game soundtracks can have, elevating the overall experience and leaving a lasting impression on players. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the importance of exceptional audio design and musical composition will only grow, captivating audiences and solidifying the status of video game soundtracks as an art form in their own right.” (Perplexity)

My favourite video game music is from The Elder Scrolls. Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim have brilliant soundtracks, with iconic pieces (Dragonborn, por ejemplio).
The composer is also a gigantic pedazo de mierda, and I refuse to name him. However, I still love the music.

I mean, I owe Guitar Hero 3 a lot for getting me into playing music, so I'll say that lol.
Other than that, Fifa Street 2 got me into more overall types of music, and Sonic Adventure 2 got me into music wholesale.

Skate 2, Carmageddon 2, Need for Speed Prostreet,, Burnout Revenge, Destruction Derby 2, Midnight Club 3 (I prefer 2's soundtrack, but we're discussing rock and metal, not trance), Flatout 2, Little Big Planet 1 & 2, Gran Turismo 4. Skate 2 is probably one of the best licensed soundtracks that I've seen in a game. Blur as well is another excellent one, but it's more drum and bass oriented.

The recent Guardians of the Galaxy game had a great licensed sountrack of 70s/80s hits, and the best (and sometimes funniest) part was when you could activate a special move that would play a random one of the songs during combat. You could either get a perfect song for fighting waves of enemies like Kickstart My Heart, or a contextually hilarious one like Don't Worry Be Happy

I think the biggest issue is licensing the music. It isn't like back then where you can just release the game on physical media and play it forever. Now you gotta rely on the game to be consistently available and having its servers running in order to play it sometimes. And if the music license runs out, you can't get the game anymore

Cyberpunk 2077 probably had the best rock and metal soundtrack in recent years. All of it custom made by actual artists that fit into this vision of the dark future. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an interesting case as it also custom made music by some of the best artists at the time.
There is a PSP game called Infected that had music from Slipknot, The Agony Scene, Trivium, Fear Factory, Chimaira and others and you could unlock new avatars featuring members of Slipknot, Rayne from BloodRayne and Mark Hunter of Chimaira.
Gran Turismo games have had fantastic soundtracks over the years. GT 1 to 4 in particular. Don't know about the latest ones. Forza Horizon games tend to have great soundtracks. The third one was fantastic having a radio station DJ'd by Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die.
Homefront featured metal and djent artists covering some staples of classic metal and rock as well as Vietnam era protest songs. Bands like Periphery, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Misery Signals and Veil of Maya are featured.
Aside from those, there isn't much else off the top of my head. Most of them have already been covered. Need for Speed games have had great soundtracks, from Underground 1, 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, Prostreet up until Shift 2. Burnout 3, Revenge and Paradise also have had great soundtracks.

When it comes to hard rock video game soundtracks, one of the first franchises that comes to my mind is the _Sonic The Hedgehog_ series.
Ranging from the level themes composed by Japanese guitarist Jun Senoue and vocal themes written by Senoue and Johnny Gioeli of Hardline fame. The songs can be a little cheesy, but they're still so fun to listen to.
For the most recent 3-D Sonic game, _Sonic Frontiers,_ they got Kellin Quinn for the boss fight themes! Just great stuff! I would love to hear your opinions on some of the music from the Sonic series at some point, Luke.

"Crazy Taxi" makes a fantastic use of The Offspring and Bad Religion to the point where the songs of theirs included in it have arguably become most associated with this game and you cannot imagine the game itself without them, and "FlatOut 2", having been one of my childhood games, was my first (and in some cases, only to date) exposure to about all of the bands included there, including Audioslave, Megadeth, Supergrass, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy and (believe it or not -ha!-) Nickelback.

With assists from Guitar Hero 3, GTA San Andreas/GTA IV/GTA V, and THPS 3 just to name the first few games that came to mind.
My introduction to STP (my favorite band), Alice In Chains and Garbage was Gran Turismo 2. THPS 3, my introduction to Motorhead. I found the Dead Kennedys, one of my fave punk bands, through Guitar Hero 3. Descendents and Black Flag (and specifically My War, easily a top 25 album for me) through GTA V. Ah, now this is a topic near and dear to my heart. I have been gaming since I could hold an NES paddle, but it was the video games I played as a teen that informed my musical tastes more than anything else in my life. There are four games in specific: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4, Need for Speed: Underground and NHL 2003. THPS 3 and 4 took my burgeoning interests in pop/punk and ska and blew them up into full fledged obsessions that still stay with me to this day. In particular those games gave me an undying love for Lessthanjake and introduced me to bands like The Offspring, Agent Orange, SoaD, The Ramones, Motorhead, Alien Ant Farm, AFI and many others. Need for Speed: Underground I remember almost exclusively for the Lil John track that always played on the opening screen and for introducing me to Static-X, Lostprophets (ugh), and Rob Zombie. NHL 2003, like NfS:U, also fed the obsession I had at the time with nu-metal with great tracks by Blindside and Papa Roach, and also introduced me to Jimmy Eat World and Gob.

if you get the chance, check out the soundtrack for true crime: new york city.
bad brains, my chemical romance, agnostic front, danzig, ramones, interpol, misfits, blondie, sonic youth, the stooges, biohazard, the damned, helmet, white zombie, the cramps, youth of today, gorilla biscuits, madball, quicksand, blue oyster cult, sick of it all, yeah yeah yeahs, television and much more. they might have been GTA clones but the soundtracks stand tall my friend.

Burnout 3: Takedown and NFS: Most Wanted were fantastic choices. Some other notable soundtracks that I think are up there are SSX 3 (Thrice, Finger Eleven, Placebo) and NHL 2004 (Deftones, Avenged Sevenfold, Adema).

I stand by my SSX On Tour suggestion over on Twitter. Good mix of 80s metal (e.g. Scorpions, Maiden, Dio, Def Leppard, Motorhead) and then-contemporary alt-rock (OK Go, The Hives, LCD Soundsystem, Queens of the Stone Age, Billy Talent), with some Pennywise and A7x for good measure. Decent rap offerings too.

I think Guitar Hero kinda goes without saying. The whole game is about the music. Same with Rock Band, which individual game is the best and deserves to represent the titles on a list like this.... I think thats up to interpretation. But you cannot deny the impact that Guitar Hero 3 had on the scene, especially with DragonForce, going from a relatively niche and unknown band to sudden, explosive mainstream fame (Whether that was good or bad for them thats also up to your own interpretation)

Rob Zombie was a character in Twisted Metal 4 on PS1.
But yea anyway, the Tony Hawk series had great soundtracks as well as the WWE games. Burnout was great as well.
But something you didn't mention on the list was Road Rash for the 3DO/PS1/Saturn and Sega CD back in 1994. It had a rock/metal or Grunge soundtrack from the biggest bands of that era, Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, among others. I think that was one of, if not THE first CD-rom game to have a soundtrack with real life bands on it.

Okay, few things. First, I was unaware that one of the lesser known cuts from one of my all-time fave bands, "Decadence" by Disturbed, was in a Need for Speed game. Secondly, you're easily the first person I've seen talk even remotely positively about Saints Row 2022 on UA-cam, even if it's just for the soundtrack. Surprised the comments haven't already been raging at that, but you have my utmost respect in that regard. Thirdly, I'm also glad you left out the Guitar Hero games, because those would be way, way too easy, and fourthly, since the WWE games are on the table, I MUST mention Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007 & 2008. They both introduced me to many great bands that I still listen to, today.

If I had to put one other on here, it would probably be guardians of the galaxy. Not only having a great original soundtrack behind it with a throwback 80's style, it also has a great licensed soundtrack as well. I mean, you're telling me you don't want to fight a giant behemoth boss while listening to Autograph, or have a giant star wars scaled spaceship battle while blasting Iron Maiden.

I have to say Cyberpunk: 2077's soundtrack is killer for the world of electronic/rock/metal. While it's not like any of the soundtracks mentioned here where they got big big names for it, they really put effort into having us hear numerous different musicians from all over the musical world. They had stuff for Latin music, generic pop, alt rock and grunge stuff, black metal and death metal, and especially industrial. The soundtrack includes stuff from Converge, Grimes, Rezodrone, A$ap Rocky, Rhys Fulber, and another FiXT artist in the form of Blue Stahli, alongside lesser known names and even techno stuff from fucking Idris Elba once the Phantom Liberty DLC came out since he voices Solomon Reed. Overall a killer soundtrack and that was what reminded me Cyberpunk even existed.

I’ve never heard of Hellsinger before but dear god you sold me on it, it kind of reminds me of a shooter version of Crypt of the Necrodancer (a game that sadly doesn’t qualify for the list since it’s mostly original music not counting the recent Hatsune Miku DLC, but I’d also recommend if you like rougelikes it even has metal option for the soundtrack)

NFS: Most Wanted is my 2nd favoritr game of all time and big reason is because of the soundtrack. I very specifically remember hearing Bat Country as I flew over a hill and around a corner, somehow in the same spot every time. It's by far thr best NFS game and i wish they would properly remake it because even though i can still play it on my PS2, that kind of game is so hard to go back to when you are use to the smoothness of current racing games. I gotta thank the THPS games (and my older cousin) for introducing me to a lot of awesome music. Games like THPS3 and THUG2 juat opened the floodgates for me and set the foundation for my muaic tastes today. Its thanks to those games that im now a big punk, metal, and hip-hop head.

An under-rated one, in my opinion, is the "Guardians of the Galaxy" game soundtrack... not totally heavy metal but with songs from Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, Autograph, Billy Idol and an entire album and band made for the game, it scratches an 80's itch. Plus, they add them into gameplay which is gives it extra points from me!
