I adored this episode. Kara is **chef's kiss** on top of that, I love that they bait and switched our expectations with Zod.
Jimmy really is winning in this version of Superman. Is actual bestfriends with Clark/Superman, Successful reporter, Multi Millionaire, Has Lex Luthor's gratitude, Rizzing up Kara.

This show keeps getting better and better. Btw , the animators are spoiling us with the thickness in this show, i sware. Im really digging this version of Kara, she got that new 52 meets DC super hero girls style to her.
I watched this episode yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. Kara being depicted as a fish out of water with a stoic personality and curiosity towards human culture was a refreshing take that reminded me of Starfire in the Teen Titans origin episode. And her frustration with her cousin assimilation into Earth life reminds me of Omni-Man attacking his son for refusing to help conquer the planet. Hell, I was probably not the only person thinking she looked like Android 18 with her shirt/vest combo.

Yep Joel this episode was kinda of climax at the end type episode we introduce to kara she interacts with Jimmy they hang out and kara actually amazed by earth food and some culture but when she see clark aka kal el as what earthling describe as a "Superhero" she switches into Mission Mode and acts like a Terminator unit stating clark either falls in line or she will pummel him and then it leaves off with kara and clark going to see her master brainiac

Was anybody else kinda happy Kara whupped Clark’s ass? The way he was so dismissive of Kara after she literally defied Brainiac and traveled half a galaxy to come see him, it really irritated me. So I was glad she gave him the business🥊. I love her already, and she’s going to have a great character arc. Lois continued to be insufferable; Clark did exactly what she asked him to do, and her insecurity flared up. She has been a terrible girlfriend to Clark this season; dismissive about the Beacon, not considering Clark’s feelings about her father, forcing Clark to live with her father without talking to him about it first, etc. I loved Season 1 Lois but this season I’m rocking with Jimmy more.

Kara aka supergirl as a villain I am going to have to get to used to, but overall this episode was good and I am curious on how this technically 2 parter is going to go down especially with Clark Kent Superman being capture by Braniac.

She isn’t a true villain. She’s misguided because she’s been raised by Brainiac. They’ve already hinted that there’s good in her when she wouldn’t attack that crowd of people outside. It’s a combination of android 18’s personality before she got with Krillin and Kara’s personality during the new 52. She had to struggle to relate to humans and move past her superiority complex

This version of Kara works well.
Android 18 is now part of DC Canon. If they pull a Superman Blue and Red moment during season 2 I have no doubt that in season 3 they will debut the Unstoppable Monster Doomsday and due the death & return of Superman storyline.

This is just an idea that I think might happen doesn't mean that it probably will. However they might incorporate some storyline ideas from other classic Superman comics or even from the movies.

The supergirl plot somehow did not go the way I expected it to go. I lowkey like it.
But Clark and Lois’s relationship is getting on my nerves. I always hate it when characters who were perfectly fine communicating and talking about their feelings all of a sudden can’t because they’re in a relationship and it feels the stuff they’re concerned about could be so easily addressed if they both just took 5 minutes to step aside and talk things out

It’s the realization that jimmy can to. He could have fixed things with Clark right away in this episode, but instead, he purposely avoids talking to him by sending all day with Kara

@@Dhampir101980 yes I understand the point but this EXACT point has not only been made in other children’s media in the past decade, it’s already been made in other DC shows like Harley Quinn.
And in that show it was better handled (albeit still annoying) because Harley and Ivy were on two different sides of morality at that point so they felt they couldn’t be open.
This is literally a 5 minute talk that keeps getting flubbed up because of stupid decisions like Clark hearing Lois talk about how inferior she feels and responding with “are you trying to to break up with me?”

Like I understand the message, but the way it comes across is way too contrived and cliche and ultimately not in line with how these characters interacted a season ago.
When it wasn’t about Superman’s identity, these two had no issues communicating now it’s like some magical force (the writers room) came in and ruined their ability to talk about their problems.
I just love that everyone in Metropolis is just assuming that Superman is single like just because they don't see Superman flying around the city with a woman in his arms that automatically means he must be single 😂😂
what i love about how the citizens of metropolis is characterized is the idea that people are very wishy washy on their view points of who they hate and who they like. last episode they hated clark for breaking stuff, now they are cool with him.

@@roderick8167 if only Kara saw, how the citizens reacted to clark last episode; she would have more of an argument of the earthlings don't actually care about their culture and just want to appropriate it for their own means. the idea of cultural appropriation is there as subtext, in this episode, but if she saw the citizens from last episode to this episode, she would have a stronger argument for it.

Now that I think about it, they should make another Red Lanterns series, they were always an interesting group of Villains/anti-heroes (their status was determine by who was leading them).
I f the show wasn’t cancelled it would have been cool to see Red Lantern Supergirl in the Green Lantern animated series.

I guess they Lois and Clark are the last 2 people in the world who wanna do stuff face to face, lol.

MAWS episode 5: Extremist/ Supremacy/Cultural Appropriation/ Fear of the Unknown
Most of this episode's theme is about being afraid of the unknown aspect of life. Jimmy and Kara come right out and say it.
People like Hank, and Luthor are extremist in their views that no “alien” can live on earth; they are extremist in their xenophobia. They believe that all their problems come from immigrants coming to earth and “harming” the once great planet. If Lex, Amanda and Hank had the funding for it, they would want to build a giant “wall” around earth to keep the alien “immigrants” out. I could even see Lex saying, “let's make earth great again.” Their extremist ways come from being afraid of the unknown. Which is interesting, because people like Lex and Hank do actually want to see the unknown - you know, for being an astronaut or scientist. Those professions are about seeking out new life and new worlds. This just goes to show that being “fearful” can come from anywhere that isn’t “rational” on the surface.
Having said that, people like Lex are kinda right because you have Kara being a supremacist. She believes they are better than everyone else around them and it’s their “right” to rule the “little people.” It only takes one bad apple to ruin it for the rest of us. As an extension to this idea, there is a subtext of cultural appropriation - coming from Kara’s point of view. She sees earth appropriating kryptonian culture; in the sense, having superman being the mascot of earth and using superman as a publicity stunt. The people that are using superman as a publicity stunt don’t actually really care about the Krytonian culture. You can kinda see her reaction, to earth culturally appropriating their culture, comes from fear of not knowing what others would do to their culture. Having said that, there is a part of her that wants to explore the unknown side of life, but is held back because of her upbringing and “father.” That then, goes to Clark's own internal conflict with that - which is the internal conflict of almost every immigrant living in a new land. You are one half your culture and one half your environment in this new land. The problem then lies in being pulled from each side or just being lost - not knowing who you are really.
Lois: she is afraid of the unknown because she doesn’t know where her dad is, of what would happen if she left everything in metropolis behind for her new career, what would happen if they found out superman’s secret through his relationship with her, and the fear of what if I’m not good enough to be with clark.
Jimmy: he is afraid to talk to his best friend about his screw up in the last episode. From Clark's point of view, he didn’t have any ill will towards Jimmy for it. Jimmy was caught up with his own anxiety of being afraid of what Clark would say. Funny enough to help Jimmy overcome his anxiety, it’s by helping another outsider. He gains confidence in himself to look into the unknown aspect of life. There is even the subtext of him being an influencer in talking about the unknown - you know his youtube channel flame bird. Jimmy has a better mindset of being a scientific explorer than Lex or Hank. What Jimmy lacks in his scientific mind, he doesn’t lack the heart of being an explorer. Which is interesting, because Jimmy is the one trying to confront his personal issues head on, and Lois runs away from her personal issues. You can kinda see that characteristic that she has comes from her dad. Even near the end of the episode Jimmy was the one that motivated Lois to come with him in rescuing clark. Lois was frozen still - heh coming from the episode where clark gets his freeze breath.
Interesting aspects: Cat saying being a reporter isn't about the writer but about the story. you would think Cat would be more selfish on believe it's all about you and your image. In that moment, we got some depth to her as a character. what Cat was to lois in this episode was what lombard was for jimmy in season 1. also how society is so wishy washing when it comes to who they hate vs who they like. one day they can hate someone and the next they can love that person. the subtext of this is about "cancel culture" one day the internet can hate you and the next day they forgot that they did hate you.
Thanks, as always, for the review and thoughts! As a casual myself, I always look forward to your commentary on the deep cuts and info about the DC universe that a casual may miss. Hoping Clark and Lois can really sit down and talk soon, as their relationship is one of the most compelling elements of this series. But Kara being either evil or brainwashed is just as compelling! Really looking forward to next week's episode.
Well, this episode was definitely intriguing. We have confirmation that the kryptonian Warrior is Kara, and there are hints that Brainiac is manipulating her, as Kara refers to him as her father. I'm not a fan of Kara being evil, but she may not actually be evil. We see signs of this from her interactions with Jimmy. She even came to Earth on her own without Brainiac and seems to find some things good about the planet. Jimmy and Kara do have chemistry together. It's such a shame that Jimmy was using his time with Kara partially to avoid Clark. Of course Jimmy felt guilty about what happened with Lex Luthor, but he at least realized what he needed to do to try to make things right with Clark, setting Kara and Clark to meet. The main plot of Superman dealing with a bachelor's contest and Lois dealing with her own insecurities after Sam left isn't as good as the Kara subplot, but it still had its moments. Cat Grant was entertaining in some parts, but I think that she unintentionally added to Lois' insecurities. Hank Henshaw has officially made himself an enemy of Superman, and to be honest, Superman should have really done more to stand up for himself. The lady Silver was a nice inclusion, as well as her defending Superman, but she only added to Lois' insecurities. At least Lois acknowledged that she and Clark don't talk anymore, which has been a huge problem for them this season. Clark even admitted to activating the beacon, while Lous finally brought up Vicki's job offer. Lois really does seem to have abandonment issues, and before Clark and Lois have to deal with their relationship issues, Superman has to fight his own cousin. They didn't have a good first meeting. Kara was happy to find her cousin at first, but Superman didn't even know it was Kara and was preoccupied with Lois. It also didn't help that Kara was disappointed that Superman didn't meet the standards of a kryptonian that Brainiac clearly indoctrinated on her. It's sad to see family reunited only to end up fighting. Superman clearly didn't want to fight his cousin, which only made it easier for Kara to have the advantage in battle. The kryptonian armor Kara wore seems to enhance and/or focus her powers, as her heat vision overpowered Superman's. However, Superman unlocked his freeze breath to counter it, which intrigued Brainiac enough to want Superman captured. This marks Superman's first battle with another kryptonian, and it's hard to see him lose, but acceptable. Superman still hasn't figured out what he's capable of, and Kara was trained to be Brainiac's soldier. It's not like this is the first time Superman and Kara have fought each other. Unfortunately, Superman gets kidnapped again, only this time he's taken into space, which is going to be harder for Lois and Jimmy to reach him.
What I really like about Kara’s subplot is the themes about culture appropriation. She sees her culture being appropriated by people not caring about her culture.

I think the big villain of either this season or next is going to be Hank Henshaw as Cyborg Superman but he's merged or under the influence of "Primus" that way DC can use both of it's Cyborg Supermans at once.

She actually did doubt Clark's loyalty momentarily and when cir-el showed up since she was his daughter and at the time she was unaware that a member of brainiac's family had taken some of his DNA without his knowledge and produced cir-el with it through a method similar to cloning!!!

There are obviously some progressive themes in MAWS, which I am totally fine with. That being said, I don't see how cultural appropriation has anything to do with the show. Yes, Waller and Luthor are using Kryptonian technology to fight Superman, but Kara doesn't even know that. And technology doesn't equal culture.
The culture appropriation comes from kara’s point of view. She views what the earthlings are doing with her culture as appropriating her and Clark’s culture. The earthlings are using Clark as a publicity stunt and less of the idea of actually celebrating his culture. Also the fact that the citizens of metropolis are so wishy washy with their reactions to Clark/Superman. One moment they hate him for breaking things, in the last episode, and the next they love him again. The people of earth don’t actually care about Superman or his culture.

From Kara POV it looks like Clark is being used by the earthlings for their amusement and less of actually celebrating their culture. Which is true, this entire situation, with the talk show, is just a publicity stunt for the earthlings to watch and less of actually caring about Superman/Clark. Then you have Clark’s own personal conflict of being the immigrant living on the new land that you are born into. Most immigrants who have that background are confused on who they are because of it. They are being pulled on one end of the spectrum to the other. Is your identity coming from your familial culture or is your identity coming from the environment that you live in?
I am sick of this show. Clark acts like a 14 year old and can’t defend himself physically or verbally. He should have been able to kick Kara’s butt without breathing hard. They have made a wimp out of Superman in comics, movies, and every animated movie and television show. They wanted to make him more human but instead they made him a bumbler. I am no longer watching this show until Clark starts acting like Superman and not Superkid.
OK A) The cast in this show is in their early 20s at most. Them being very very young and awkward is like the whole point of the series. We are literally seeing their first jobs, first loves and first heart breaks.
B) Clark has only been Superman in the show for less than a full year. He's still unlocking classic Superpowers he didn't even know he had one at a time.
And C) Kara was raised for war by Brainiac and given high tech alien gear to aid her in battle. We even see it amp up her heat vision.
I'm sure you would have noticed these things if you weren't so busy having what are clearly kneejerk reactions.
