I'm from D.C. and once I got married, I moved to Raleigh for five years and most recently to Detroit (which has a similar vibe to D.C.). My wife thinks people in D.C. have bad attitudes, and I had to tell her that when you're paying $2000 for a one-bedroom apartment, you'd be angry too. And yes, the food in D.C. does suck. But if you're from the area and don't get out often, you don't even notice it until you go somewhere else and think, "Damn, this tastes different, lol."
One thing I will say is that I never knew how spoiled I was being black in D.C. It's nothing to see a black person with a million-dollar home or making $200k. All black folks want to run to ATL, but it's overcrowded down there, and if you don't have a real plan, you will end up broke. D.C. always has jobs. I noticed stuff like this when I was living in Raleigh; I felt like an alien to white folks down there. They had never met a well-off black person and assumed all of us work at Walmart. No, Billy, I can't help you find anything in here, sir. I'm looking for the same stuff you are. I loved being around other successful black folks in D.C., where it's common and you're not like a unicorn.
I'm in Detroit now, and you can tell they have been redoing the city, and gentrification has started. This city is slowly becoming much different than people remember. The same thing happened in D.C. Gentrification does have some pros, but bad traffic, the high cost of living, and too many people moving to your city aren't it. The best way to enjoy living in the nation's capital is to find a remote job where you don't have to commute as much. That's what I do in Detroit now, where the cost of living is much cheaper and, as of now, it isn't overcrowded, LOL.

As an adopted Washingtonian from the Southwest, my daddy moved us there in 1990 to take advantage of what is now the tech boom. But this is when DC was Chocolate City. When there were soul food restaurants on Georgia Ave, festivals celebrating all shades of Black culture in the summer, and U Street still had a faint echoed breath of the Harlem Renaissance that our hearts could still connect to generations later(RIP Twins Jazz 😢).
My husband and I were entertaining the idea of moving to South Carolina where my Gullah Geechie family is, but the same uprooting that has left DC culturally crestfallen is the same thing happening in my daddy’s home town, so we moved to a place in VA that is so rural it’ll be another 30 years before the cultural extraction (sans Novocain) happens. By then our kids will be good and grown, so we will either be in the islands or somewhere in the motherland.

The local food scene in DC is not good. Now the upscale restaurants are great. But DC is not a place where you can get great pizza and wings from a local place. It's also not a great place for quality Italian food.
What's sad is that DC is surrounded by great food cities: Baltimore, Philly, NYC, and Boston.
I love living in DC, but I do miss being able to get quality pizza. I didn't know how good I had it in Rochester when it came to great pizza, wings, and Italian food.

The city is a great mix of entertainment, history and politics.
The food IS mid. There is no distinctive cuisine that defines the area (and no, carry out wings and Mambo sauce isn't enough). That's great for variety, but poor for food that really hits. There are gems to be found, but overall, the food scene mostly trendy.
I was born in DC, but then grew up in NoVA, with extensive family in PG and worked in the city as a Fed contractor for 20+ years.

You started off with the Cons and you go into the problems with the food scene here in DC. Well, let me share as of June 2024, DC ranks are really solid. So, I think Rob might want to reconsider this con. However, over all I agree with all other points. He did miss making the point about the level of social services and health care, which are so important to any ranking. It is my view, DC has the best services for its citizens than any other place in the nation. So, other than that, great job, Rob. Also Rob, if you want to hang out and check out some great eats, hit me up. There is a new African restaurant in my neighborhood, Logan Circle, that will blow you away. Ok, stay safe and thanks for the video!!!

I'ma born and bred Washingtonian from Northeast DC. A lot of what he said I'd agree with. We've seen our city go through massive changes to be as appealing as it is now. However, the appeal was to do just what it's doing and attract all the out of towners here and make it more inconvenient. Gentrification is real and moving us natives away to finesse newcomers here and inflate the price of EVERYTHING because they don't know any better. Everything is business oriented and transactional, and it births the hunger and desperation for financial stability. Which fuels anger, animosity, attitude and aggression. Any of us native Washingtonian will have that edge to us. Any newcomers will develop it. Even in something small. Like what this brother mentioned, in TRAFFIC! The environment creates it. But they wonder why the crime rate here is so high.. It's rough here and everyone's money hungry. It's very political in how things move in all areas and all about "who" you know.. DC will never be the same again, but it's like, "damn, why create something completely different??" So that everyone feels inclusive.. There's a piece of mind to be obtained here and a certain quality of life. You'll just be inconvenienced in the process of obtaining and maintaining it.. real talk!! FYI, It ain't sweet here and our crazy asses love it! 😂

Having lived here for over 15 years, and lived in a lot of other places besides, I like DC better than anywhere else.
The climate is mild compared to that of some Western states. Sure, we have hot summers and cold winters, but not as extreme as some other places. And we don't get huge tornadoes. The hurricanes that come up the east coast tend to brush on past, normally bypassing us. We do get an occasional big snowfall, but it rarely stays around for more than a week.
This city has a lot of crime, but it's not in the top ten. Some other cities are significantly worse. You just need to be cautious, keeping your guard up.
One additional point worth mentioning is that the Smithsonian, including the National Gallery of Art and the Zoo, are FREE. Each museum has plenty to see, all for nothing. Not many cities offer that.
Finally, if you like the great outdoors, we have Rock Creek Park. It stretches on for miles and miles. It has all kinds of wildlife--including some species that you wouldn't normally find in any big city.

Still, this can be a plus in a way, as while I wouldn't say DC has the "best" food culture, but it's definitely up there in food diversity, arguably punching above our weight. In the next few decades, I hope some chef in our area can create some more local food to put our city on the map using this diversity of influences, more so than just mumbo sauce.

Good work, but you missed a few things.Being from Baltimore, DC (way before all the DMV talk) is our neighbor 50 miles to the South, and "the district" has always been a great city for various reasons. The food, nightlife, economy, and its are multicultural. The women are fine, too (most are transplantsl. Yeah, it can be a bit bougesiouse and pretentious, but it's DC! Another pro you never mentioned is the historical monuments, architecture, and history in DC. In addition to the great universities (talks/lectures) and unique businesses, there. Crime in DC has always been outrageous. It was worse back in the late 80s during the crack epidemic.
As a Marylander, driving in this area is like a live version of a Madmax/Road Warrior film. It's insane! I've driven in NYC and never had aa many problems. DCs transportation system (including MARC train) is pretty good. There are remnants of "old DC" that I miss. The many Black Businesses and cohesiveness of neighborhoods, etc. Gentrification has its pros and cons. It cleaned up blighted areas but pushed people out. DC is still an interesting place to live.
