From my perspective you're shared experience Was rooted in the typical racism WE ALL EXPERIENCE in a system setup for them and not DEI I'm glad you are doing well at your current position with Google
I agree keep them folks out ya business They don't want to see you enjoy life and this is why America isn't in the top 10 of industrialized nations They had a chance to do right and did wrong Now they have BRICKS as a result Like how do you fugg up Reserve Currency status
Bro is telling no lies! I had the same thing happen to me in corporate, this woman was literally upset because I did not hang out with them after work hours and I was like ma'am I keep my professional and personal life separate as a person who have worked in corporate all my life your co workers and managers are not your friends. So she started going around the office saying I wasn't working and not team player, but what she didn't know was that I was truly the wrong one to play with because I kept a document with dates, times, deadlines, and documentation of everything I did on the job and it dated back for months. I happily sent those documents into the EEOC and she was eventually fired please don't play with me. We also have to talk about how being a black introvert is like an internal sin in corporate America because the number of times people assumed I was mean just because I didn't want to gossip or hang out with them was wild to me.
FACTS!! You hit it on the nail with the sin being an introvert in corporate with all these extrovert vultures. They always want to hang out. So draining.
You listened to your inner voice that said stay away from the wicked You also kept the proper notes to prove your case She was not fit for the job she was fired from
Right I'm not even in corporate America and had the same issue my boss wanted to be friends I said okay at first but then it's started being overbearing. Wanting to hang out after a full shift I been around you all day don't want to hand out then texting me everyday at home . I had to tell him let's just keep our relationship professional it was too much and I had already told him I'm a introvert. Luckily he's a cool dude so he was cool about it I'm still nice with him at work though so I guess that helps . I've learned from past jobs being too quiet is not good so with this job I tried to force myself to be more outgoing I guess he thought I wanted to be friends.
I worked with a guy who was black just like me. One time I picked him up from the airport because he was stranded and he stayed at my home for two nights. Also, got him in touch with my ivy league friends when he was considering applying for business school. I was slow to tell him about my personal business, but eventually did. A year later, he got promoted and became my manager. 3 months later, my "friend" I'd talk to all the time about all his problems fired me from my high paying ($250K+) corporate job Your work friends arent your friends. Period.
When you’re really brilliant, the person most intimidated by you is usually miles ahead of you. What they notice is that you have that “thing” that school can’t teach and money can’t buy. You’re innovative. Creative. Original. Hardworking. That’s a beast combination. Stay to yourself. Protect your genius. 👍
I've been in corporate america for 30 years at big Fortune 50 companies working in Technology in development. Black man here. Rule 1) NEVER tell your business!! EVER!! If you must tell something, keep it LIGHT!!! If you have to ask why and you're black, ask an older black person in private. Rule 2) SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!!! The rug will get pulled from you when you least expect it!!
I disagree. That is the method used by those with little or no value. It’s the same bad advice I was given decades ago. Here’s the advice that works for me and works for my mentees who are smart. Before I mentor anyone I tell them if they are racially fragile then I’m not the one for them. 1. Determine what kind of life you want to live. Basically, begin with the end in mind so you can plan goals around facts and data, not racial feelings. 2. Learn a valued skill. There are literally tens of thousands off videos online teaching them. 3. Go to meetups and other free organizations that have skilled people in the industry of your choice and establish relationships there and put in some FREE work. It’s not really free because you’re learning too. Enough of the preliminary. 1. At the job/career, the most important thing you will ever do is build alliances and allegiances. That starts with the person who has the most control of your career at the company besides you and that is your immediate manager. Not lead. Not supervisor. Your manager. Know the differences. If you don’t have direct access to your manager, find a role where you do. If you don’t have a manager pushing for your success, join the Goddamn club of everyone before and leave to find one who will. 2. Get mentors!!!!!! Preferably multiple mentors at a high level at the company and outside the company. They will help keep you accountable and help navigate the ups and downs of Corporate. That’s it. There is more but I find in attempting to help other sort through their Corporate struggles, this is enough to thrive. Of the 12 people I have mentored, across all races, the three I had to let go were all Socalled Black. And it was because they just knew 100% that Whitey or Blscky were out to gatekeep, steal their ideas, keep them down for some reason. I read very similar energy in these insane posts. Oh. Here’s my favorite. “I don’t come to work to make friends!” Says the losers who usually don’t have good relationships even in their personal life. And sir, you are right to save money because it keeps you from being desperate. But no one today will save their way out of corporate. The average in-company ease over the last five years is around 2-3% annually . The average increase in housing costs during the same time period was around 6% annually. Meanwhile, smart people know investing into the S&P 500 returned wealth at around 18% annually. You cannot save to that level especially with inflation as high as it is now. Only with assets can one track better than inflation. I know my method work because I have not only mentored a dozen professionals in Corporate IT across a few Fortune 500 orgs but my customers are among the top corporations in the world. And I mentored my two sons to the same level of relative success for their ages. Provecho!!
I agree with this. I'm in Aerospace and the industry is really shaky right now. Got laid off in January, started a job in March, now it's June and I won't see another paycheck until August. I'm thankful for savings.
So So True and. most of us allow it, instead of understanding. We are not free in America!! a hard reality to accept, but we will never be free until we accept it.
I don't work in corporate anymore( I work in the medical field now )but this is true. People will either have the same goals and feel like they are in competition with you, or they don't feel like you're not worthy of reaching your goal and are waiting for you to slip up.
It’s a shame that people have to experience this. But one thing I’ve noticed with people is that they aren’t satisfied with their day to day life, so they seek fulfillment by causing drama and false narratives in their workplace.
Under rated comment! I’ve NEVER been mistreated by a boss I knew as generally respectful and happy in their personal lives. It definitely feel like SO many take that unhappiness from home and bring it to work to take it out on subordinates/coworkers.
It's so pathetic and evil of these miserable losers to take out their personal frustrations on others, who are just minding their business. But as they say misery loves company. I've noticed that within every workplace I've been in to date. Just wack jobs 😂
Being a black person in corporate America is so exhausting 😔 why can’t we just do the work & go home without all the extras? If I don’t want to mingle & be extra friendly or hang out after work & get to know people more what does that have to do with my ability to do my job? Long as im respectful & cordial it should just be that. These companies always preach so much about “diversity” well that should include those who are introverts or more direct. They make us do all these bs personality quizzes to only want us all to act the same. And the passive aggressive whi*e women are the worse always finding something to complain about that has nothing to do with the actual job/work
You can. Make up a story about your personal life e.g., spouse, kids etc. Yeah, you shouldn't have to, but you better. It gives you easy outs. My kid is sick. I have to pick my child up from school, the little league game etc. My husband/wife is having surgery.
It was always about me avoiding difficult co-workers. I'd get brought into the office to be told that I'm too serious or seem nervous. I would simply say that I want to make it home to my wife and kids without ruffling co-worker's feathers. They took that as me being a threat or too condescending. After a year and 8 months, I respectfully resigned.
I am in the corporate world,Asian woman, had to train my new coworker…2 years later they give him a $2.00 raise making more money than me…I been with the Corp company for 10 years…. I resigned right before a huge project… they can figure it out….
Damn, the same thing happened to me not in our corporate job, but in a regular job, I trained my white coworker and he ended up getting the manager position and he even brought in his girlfriend who ultimately got her own office despite not even having a college degree orexperience running an office. This was in Florida, which is why I’m not there anymore.
Not sure if you're still a part of CA but please never tell your manager what you are using your PTO for. It's none of their business. All they need to know is the dates you will be away and who your backup will be. Don't even tell people you THINK you're cool with because often times they will put you in a trick bag too. I am a manager and I do not require any of my directs to give me a blow by blow of what they will be doing with their personal time because it's none of my business.
That’s facts! The problem was before she was my manager we reported to the same person. She already followed me on social media and everything. So she would have found out anyway and I didn’t want it to look like I was hiding it. But you’re right though, the dates is really all you need to share 👏🏾
@@CoreyMJones3 also please don’t friend managers and/or coworkers on SM. Folks are wild and get jealous over things we consider regular stuff. Keep going I wish you every success! 🙌🏾
That’s the same thing i say to direct reports. Your personal time is none of my business even when you are calling out, I don’t need the story behind it.
Facts! … I’m ruthless, calculated and often times find myself having to hold corporate leadership accountable. If you care too much, it will drain you. Emotional intelligence is everything in this space.
Women in the corporate environment are different. I always have a side gig outside of work and keep it to myself. They will try to convince you we are family at work; NOPE, it's a setup.
As a black manager working in corporate America for 10 years I understand and can relate to your experiences. It’s not about performance but control. The number one thing I look at is the empathy and emotional intelligence level of my immediate boss
Oh boy, the good ole PIP!! I’ve been on it about 6 times in my career, they are horrible stressful and borderline suicidal. But, I always got through either with a new job before I got fired or after I got fired. Biggest lesson I tell anyone who work for someone is Please Please have an emergency fund. I had nothing in the early days and you go in survival mode. Now, if I get fired, I just say 👌🏿 ok and walk out door cause I know I got 6 months EF to live off .( and I ain’t too Proud to go work fast food to make money)
I totally relate to what you said about being put on a PIP! I've experienced that as well. I'll go even further and say that while I was having to do a PIP, a PIP was being done on me by my immediate! 😡 She would even write down how long I was in the bathroom!! 🫨 Talk about micro managing on a higher level smh.
If those 6 months you were working fast food that whole time even if it was part time you’ll extend how much more time you have before you need to get a better paying job . Even if only for a bit…
I had a supervisor years ago tell me that I had a resting b**** face and looked bored in meetings. Like am I supposed to smile in a meeting the whole time? Ppl are weirddd
@@TheeRebelI’ve had a colleague tell me this a few weeks ago right in front of a manager. Mind you she has one too. I say that to say People say anything.
*My biggest adjustment in working in corporate is the fakeness. I was not used to people smiling and in your face and talking about you or putting out their own narratives.*
My overall experience is that corporate is a culture. The better you match with the culture the better your experience will be. If you're not a cultural match, no matter how productive you are or how much money you generate for the company, they will IN MOST CASES (NOT ALL) find a reason and a way to transition you back out on the street.
Yes it's "White" culture that is implicitly anti-Black. Calling it just "corporate culture" skirts around the core issue, RACE and the power dynamics of white supremacy.
It’s systemic? Damn it’s crazy how people are brainwashed to think of us and treat us certain ways. It’s ingrained in the system for us to be oppressed in ways we don’t even know exist. Scary
Turned down interviews and job offers because the hiring Managers happened to be females. It's just what it is, females tend to come with a lot of issues and insecurities in the workplace and in life in general. Pettiness etc would stifle your productivity and lower your morale, so I'd never put myself in that type of environment.
I work in healthcare and it’s definitely not for the weak, but having black team members that you CAN TRUST definitely makes the difference. I’m definitely thankful for the black women I have on my team with me currently.
This❤I work at an private clinic,n was the only black person there on top of that I have locs it always felt isolated, the vibe was weird everybody watching you I been at this place frm 22 I'm now 35 we just hired an younger black guy.. baby we converse one day n haven't stopped he mke work so much more relaxed 😊
Sometimes we treat each other the worst tho. It’s cool until you seem like you might get promoted or something, then they use anything you told them against you. You really can’t trust anyone at work.
As black men our image has been completely destroyed by the mainstream media. We are all dealing with this nonsense in the workplace and nothing is being done about it legally! At this point we should be building our own businesses and working together as black men. Nobody want to deal with gaslighting, lying, email wars, and false accusations everyday you go to work…too stressful
Us in the Black community have allowed this and perpetuated this. As a black woman, I know not one single black "thug" in real life. But I've seen black thugs galore on TV and in the movies. That is our fault.
I just experienced going through a PIP. Even the HR personnel knew my managers were making me jump through unnecessary hoops. By the second meeting, i knew everything i did was under a microscope, I resigned. I already had another job lined up. My advice is to 'go where you are celebrated not tolerated.'
You let your guard down was the mistake you made. Never reveal long-term plans for yourself beyond their employment objectives. I backed my big mouth up with obtaining a law degree while employed but stayed another 5 years to get vested in the pension plan, which I am enjoying today. Stephen Covey said, "Begin with the end in mind." Great advice! The company folded two years after my departure and my former colleagues 401(k) plans were frozen and were reduced to pennies. The legacy I left - some black people plan for the long game too! They were in the midst of a Superstar and didn't know it. I left with my Ten Year Award, Top Performer Award, My Law Degree, and a 100% return on my investment in the stock market. I did party because it was 1999!!!
I'm in a similar position. I'm pursuing my law degree while employed. My supervisor "loved" me and my metrics were outstanding. He asked me to be a mentor. When I asked him if I would get a raise for taking on a new role he said no. I told him I understand and told him I respectfully decline. Long story short, the quality of my work suddenly became an issue and I was put on memo( warning writeup). He would play this emotional mind games, making me doubt my work and send emails documenting my work. I started doing the same. He told me I overpaid in settling an insurance claim. I wrote an email explaining the settlement number was within my authority and screen shotted his message/shout-out to me in our team group chat. He never responded to my email, which he normally does. My metric numbers are stellar. They know I'm in law school and not to fuck with me, only for the simple fact I'm using my job for tuition reimbursement. Corporate America tries to breakdown black employees to submission, but if you know how to play the game, then you'll succeed.
Corporate America has a way that it wishes to see Black men... and a power position isn't it. They want us entertaining and likeable - like sitcom characters. Do you - and you will live longer and be happier in the end😎
@@sboyer087 Don't share your business. Especially when it relates to social media or content creation. Please leave your outside work life, outside your work life. While also being respectful of any employee agreements you've signed or made. Your business is your business unless there is an employee contractual agreement otherwise made.
For us introverts they should let the work speak for itself Just because a person isn't engaged (gossiping, small talking, after work meetups, minding their business, unbothered, polite and all that) it doesn't mean they don't want to be there maybe they are just not into that or don't want to mix personal life with work which is torally fine
@@Allthingsworktogether1125 and that's the other thing companies should be focused on if the person is doing their work well instead sometimes they would rather prioritize people that are back bitting or gossip but are social and make them feel comfortable rather than a quiet person that does his or her job well that's an issue that should be fixed
@laxus5 overseas you can be an introvert or extrovert and your job won't be affected based on who you are designed as a human being. Places like Europe you will feel more comfortable in the workplace as you don't have to do the most and be on a at will contract also. Maybe consider.
It’s tough! If we’re not outspoken we’re lazy or incompetent or don’t care. If we’re too outspoken we’re the combative, disagreeable “angry black man”. As long as the job gets done let’s not focus on “personal style” as your manager put it. She just couldn’t take the real Corey. Kudos for knowing your worth and for leaving those toxic environments!
Right. As a black woman in Corporate, I find that you cannot be the introverted "black girl". I feel like they need you to be the jester or animated persona they see on TV in order to entertain them. I come in, say good morning, give them the same half smiles they do me and let my work speak for itself. I do not indulge in gossip and activities that are after hours. When I leave, it's good day. I work remote but only go into the office on Tuesdays which is a saving grace. I can't deal with these ppl too much. Especially a white woman. 😒
This!!! I am the outspoken one trying to make sure I handle whatever I need to in order to get the job done, and somehow I'm aggressive even though I'm respectful and professional with every interaction that I have. I be so lost, like what are yall talking about!!?
Bruh, I'm literally going through the SAME thing at my current job. Supervisor found my channel and since then has been making the exact same comments. Questioning if I want to be there and the whole nine. Corporate and its politics... yeah. Great video though my guy 🙏🏽
Damn man, sorry you’re going through that smh. It’s mad politics in corporate and if you’re different and don’t get down with the politics it becomes a problem
Bruh, I love your videos, its so trash how they wont even budge with "other" folks, I had that happen twice at two previous jobs, saying I was making content on the clock. People are so stupid.
dames is one of my favorite UA-camrs. I haven't watched your videos in a while, I've been busy trying to self-teach myself cybersecurity. It's always good to wind down the afternoon watching your content with a couple of snacks. LOL
I’ve learned early on not to tell anybody my business about my work outside of my 9-5 unless we are cool. I’m def not telling a manager. Sometimes managers are some of the biggest haters on the team.
My brother said always assume that your coworkers will take the information you give them and pass it on to your manager. My coworkers can't stand me because I'm vague about life outside of work.
@targetegrat Yes, anything they tell the "cool" work friend can be repeated. So, I would ONLY share things that I don't mind my manager and /or other co workers knowing, if my "cool" work friend should happen to tell the Mgr or another co worker........No loss. You can talk if you want just, keep it general if not work related. U can clock out and let your hair all the way down! I stayed in CA too long, should have gotten out sooner. It felt so wrong. It wasn't the place for me to thrive. Some Black people like and thrive. So many complain too, so many!!! Oops I have written you a book.
I wouldn’t say not to share your personal life because it adds context to your behaviors which may be a source of irritation to you boss if unexplained. Just don’t tell more than is necessary , or details that may make them jealous.
Although I am a black woman not a man. I can totally relate to what you said about being treated like you aren’t doing enough, being asked to do things outside of your job description, having to go the extra mile to prove yourself, and WHEW 😰 After all of that still just not being enough. What I have learned is that there is a spirit of jealousy and power dynamics that drive unhappiness in the workplace. It is awful the amount of narcissistic behavior that goes on and I am sorry you had to uproot yourself so many times. A rose is still a rose 🌹 good brother! Continue to shine ✨
BW here previously in CA. I dealt with the usual microagressions, as well as blatant racism, including jokes about AA. I opened my own firm eventually, but prior to, someone put me onto the 48 laws of power. I never let on anything was bothering me, and methodically planned my exit, because no one was about to mess up my bag. They were SHOCKED when I left, because when I tell yall they thought I was the happiest of campers 😂 and my boss even tried to “warn me” of how hard it is to be successful in business (though NONE had EVER owned a business). Anywho, 15 years in, very successful multi - million dollar firm, and have even hired some former co-workers. You just need to learn how to play their game, and be the better player. And for those who think “I shouldn’t have to do all that”, then don’t. I was able to do that because I had a long term plan to leave for my own business
I used to work for CA at Amazon. You hit the nail on the head with every point. What irks me is the social and psychological expectations for black men in CA. I was the same way, laid back and nonchalant individual who worked hard and meticulously. But it's never enough, they expect black men in corporate to be sociable, extroverted, cracking jokes, and the life of the party. But, when we don't fit those stereotypes it becomes a problem, we are viewed as uninterested, unfocused, and lazy from a corporate standpoint which is vehemently untrue. Meanwhile, other race groups can be quiet and reserved and no one bats an eye or questions their drive and work ethic. I feel this definitely needs to be addressed in CA. The stereotyping needs to stop for black educated men!
Let me tell you someting......the PIP is something I went through as a CPA as the highest performing accountant on the team and top recruit. When you get zero feedback or little feedback, you do exactly what you did.....do your job at the highest level and go higher and higher and higher until your voice is heard. AND KEEP RECEIPTS! Man!
Bro. I have been in corporate America for 10+ years. As a black man, we literally have to be the best at everything. The Bias is real. The hate is real. Networking is KEY, and keep growing yourself and never settle at a company. Have to be out for yourself. Companies don’t love you
I think a huge part of this problem, in addition to the bias, is this insistence that your co workers are family and they're not. We are there to work with each other and that is it. There should be no expectation that we're going to hang out together or be friends, which is inauthentic anyway because a friend is someone you choose, not someone you're forced to be around because you both work at the same place. All this talk of us being family is making people think we're supposed to be super close and it's really just insincere to think this way.
BP have forgotten who they are dealing with. These people used to go to war with the rest of the world…..now that they can’t the way they used to, that spirit of fierce competition and the “art of war” have been replaced with tactics in corporate America. Aggression, passive aggression, mind games, psychopathy etc something we can’t understand.
Looking for this comment.."If you do not understand white supremacy, which is racism, what it is and how it works, everything you do understand will only confuse you" Mr. Neely Fuller Jr.
Black women also experience this in the workplace. However, I feel there is a concerted ( by some not all) effort to sabotage the educated black man. Particularly, if he is knowledgeable, confident and likable. Keep excelling, Corey. Success looks good on you. 💪🏾✨✨✨✨
That is because the patriarchy was designed to help or assist certain ⚪️people Hence any man who is any man let alone closer to that darker melanin is at stake for removal if stepping out of “their perceived” pocket
Your experience sounds exactly like my experiences as a black man in Corporate America! It has been the most toxic and defeating experience ever! I am happy to know that I am not crazy and a failure that I am not alone in this!
Yes, I agree, I'm black and have been through some of these experiences myself, and it's important not to personalize these experiences of discrimination and not feel like a failure everyday. Build your own wealth and go where they fu*k (like) with you 😂
Self-confidence is viewed as a threat. All too often as black men we believe that our accomplishments are what we bring and that should be great and an asset to the company. Right? While it is, the reality is their insecurity and ruthlessness will usually find a way to get what is needed from us and downsize without us. And people that look just like us are the ones used to do the dirty work. Beware. Trust no one like that.
I’m a recruiter (black woman)and have been in the same company for 18 years. Worked under several leaders and thrived and even filled in as interim manager while we looked for a new Director. New director comes in last year (white woman) and opens a manager role and says no one on the team is qualified for it 😮 and hires her friend. Now instead of thriving, I’m told I need to speak up more and that I don’t seem engaged. Seems like a common story.
It would have been best to observe because you didn’t provide any empathy or advice from what you have seen in your one job for 20 years whilst MANY brothas are switching jobs FAR more frequently due to everything he explains…from depression to worse. The system has been fearful of a lawsuit from a woman in particular black women since the 90s I saw with my mom…beside the system knows how to destroy the family, devalue the man with work instability or no work please be more aware.
Thank you for this video & your transparency. I worked in tech too (tech sales) & THOUGHT I was working on a pretty cool team. So, during a team meeting (when management asks, “How was your weekend?”🙄), I revealed this UA-cam channel reached 1K subscribers. Long story short…I was demoted & placed on another team FOR NO REASON, other than jealousy. I quit & found something else that doesn’t cause mental health issues, & in turn, has given me tons of creativity & ideas to grow my brand. So, I’m thankful 🙌🏾😊
Smh...can't be doing better than them in their caste system! It's insecurity and that LBJ quote. "If you can convince the lowest white man that he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice that you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him someone to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." Glad it all worked out for you in the end, that's all that matters! 😊
Bro, you don't know how much I needed this video. I just randomly stumbled on it. You clearly stated every experience & emotion I've been feeling as a Data Engineer in my department. I've had the exact same experience and it's soo frustrating but I'm still pushing through. Our experience needs to be studied and brought to light. I appreciate you for sharing your story with us 👏🏾💪🏾
Corey, you were my recruiter in late 2022 when I was interviewing for Google’s APM graduate role 😂. Maybe you remember (I’m a young black British guy). l thought you were great as a recruiter, loved your demeanour and seemed like you genuinely cared about helping us candidates through the process. 2 years later it’s great to see you’re enjoying your time at Google. Maybe we’ll cross paths again soon but this time for a mid-level PM position 🤷🏾♂️💫
I just find it interesting that no matter the role “we” all have similar stories at some point in our careers…ish is exhausting man! We have to keep going anyway
I'm a Black man currently working at a Biglaw firm. I'm literally in the same situation; I'm in the process of trying to find another law firm because my team is unwilling to accept me. I'm just a worker.
Don't give up. Do you know how much people would want to be in your position working for a biglaw firm. Don't be intimated to leave a good job because of people.
I personally believe canada is even worse than the states in that field..have you heard of the lawsuit from 1000 of black people that worked for the government all their life and never got promoted ..white people alway passed them over regardless of how well they did at their work..they all went through a lifetime of the bad stuff this guy was talking about and all end up with mental problem depress anxiety etc..check up the canadian black lawsuit againt the government
As a black male in government, I have experienced this also. I suspect that you are nicer about it than I am. I have over 24 yrs and was supposed to retire last year, but continued to work. I can walkout when I want, but do not like the effort to drive me out.🤨
I can totally relate to your stories, and I will emphasize that it’s mainly due to your skin color. In my situation I was a Senior Engineer with a a heavy African accent leading a team of white engineers. A lot drama I tell you 😂😂
I’m three minutes in and already I am loving the video. I love how you are not doing the typical “sit down” video. You are filming from different angles, moving around and throwing interesting b-roll in the mix. You are an excellent content creator and your content inspires me so much. I pray that your platform continues to grow and grow beyond your wildest dreams. 🙏🏾🙌🏾🔥
Its tough in corporate America for anyone that is not in the majority...I been grinding in it for 30 years. The crazy " good old boy" culture even among companies that have these diversity and inclusion programs is ever present.
It's a thin line between trying to fit in and make bonds and shucking and jiving. A very thin line! A lot of the coworkers respect you for keeping it real though. But upper management is the challenge.
@@Kuhmodo I agree with you...But at the end of the day you have to understand you are in the minority. Furthermore...corporate America is really about the only way...excluding entrepreneurship ...to make a good income
Thanks for your perspective. Im at the end of my career in corporate America in the banking and health industries. My experience left me believing that Black Males have this unique challenge, particularly when dealing with female managers ( this shocked me). After over forty years working in corporate ( in the south), it seems as though there are extreme preconceived notions about us, and when you dont meet those negative notions, your character is attacked. It is really exhausting and it left me tired. Now, im preparing to retire and really decompress. Thanks again.
Facts, same here. For anyone young I would advise them to try to go into business for yourself. Corporate is not meant for smart, self respecting black men. They want ninjas.
@@mikejames884 disagree. I’ve had a very successful corporate career as an engineer and I currently make over 300K/year working in tech with less than 10 YoE… personally it’s most important that you and your managers personality mesh well together.. I’ve had issues with managers in the past and I always left shortly after realizing they sucked
Black woman here, and I relate to this as well. Unfortunately, I've gone through with BOTH "others" and "us" (it's even more hurtful when it's one of us). Corporate people don't like when you're only focused on professional work and you're not "social" (even if you ARE being kind and personable, it's not enough to them), especially if you're introverted (like I am) or you just have a reserved, low-key personality. They like Black folks smiling 24/7, super bubbly, and funny... that's what makes them comfortable 🙄😒 Hey, if that's you're natural personality, that's fine (and even if you do, y'all have to be careful too because you can go from the favorite to the most hated real fast... it's called "pet to threat"... insane but real). But for those of us who are quieter, we have to play the game and become versions of ourselves that may be pleasant to them but inauthentic to us, and it's truly draining on the mind, body, and spirit over time. When you're able to find a work environment where you can truly be yourself and get commended for your efforts, it's truly a blessing but unfortunately not the norm for most.
These conversations are so important! If you don’t have a sense of self and a community to unpack these experiences with you can easily get lost in it and loose your identity. I’ve definitely had to look at an email a time or two and ask myself if I was tripping with what I was reading! Community is so important!
Yes! As a black woman, I have had to deal with other black women as my superiors…sometimes 2nd and 3rd levels up and there was definitely some insecurity and sabotaging going on. Not just with me. That really hurt me as I had to learn that all skin folk is not kinfolk and often, they are puppets that perpetuate the same behaviors as the other non-black managers. I’ve had more luck with non-black male managers, sadly. There needs to be discussions on this topic.
Yeah I had one black manager and they always tried to assert their dominance over me... mainly due to jealousy/envy imo. Also, one white women was like that but I chalk that up to her just being a weirdo Outside of that, my mixed manager, white managers and asian manager have all been super chill and easy to report to.
You ladies make entrepreneurship sound so easy. It is not for the fainthearted and needs to be a well-calculated choice. Not impossible, but also not simple.
I'm a black woman in corporate in Spain! And all of this rings true for me too! 😩 Some hard lessons I've needed to learn over this past year. Corporate life is like being the jungle. Survival of the fittest for real🥴🫠💆🏾♀️
@@whymillie Yep…10 years in!😅💪🏾… Spain isn’t for the weak…theres a lot of bureaucracy. But its worth it. I prefer the☀️ and quality of life over living in the 🇬🇧...🫠🥴
Excellent content. Your former Deloitte manager was intentional in trying to create doubt and division between you and your colleague. 👀 The Accenture manager was insecure and inexperienced. Her objective was to blackball you☹️ Damn shame.
abisolaabisola - Yes, I have had women in workplaces turn on me because I didn't approach them although they were not my managers. Update - None of them were cute, they mostly looked like bears.
As the only black librarian in my library district, I get this everyday. It’s like working in the Matrix and we are Neo. So many corporate bots everywhere who hate you because they are jealous of your light. Keep shining.
Not work woes at the library! I always envisioned that as the perfect place to work. Books & smart people, seems like paradise. Hoping things improve for you.
Same experience as an introvert non ghetto black woman… I look good & I’m here to do my job! My lunch is for quiet time and talking with my boo, the weekends are to forget about anything work related (I’m not coming) … my work is exceptional pay me & deal with it
What is a "non ghetto" Black woman? Do you believe that in general Black women are ghetto & you are somehow an exception? It sounds like you have some biases about Black women that you may need to work through. I'm hoping there are no Black women that have to report to you...ever.
Whewww.... I'm only 8 minutes into the video and had to pause it because I'm triggered (I do plan to eventually finish watching). I'm a Black woman, been in the game for decades. Started in corporate. For the last 6 years, I've been running my own business and for as hard as entrepreneurship is (certainly has its own set of issues), I try really hard to keep from going back into corporate toxicity. Kudos to you Corey for hanging in there and sharing your story!
Yea, that we don’t know if you want to be here….i knew they were laying the groundwork to not renew the contract with that. This same exact thing happened to me when I relocated for a role. It hurt me to my core because my ish was together and top notch. These places dgaf no matter how hard you work or how good your metrics are. Edited to say: I salute you sis for making the switch to entrepreneurship . That’s something I’m trying to line up now.
Got out of Corporate in 2003 to start my entrepreneurship journey, made a lot of mistakes a long the way...Had a lot of success doing that time...went back to corporate America in 2016 to 2017....left again to start back my business...back doing well again on my own ....I always used corporate for a pay check not for a career....
OMG, yes! Super subjective! No metrics in that plan at all! How did her manager approve that nonsense? They probably didn't even ask to see it. This is why I love my union job bc this 'ish would never fly. Thank you for being resilient. What can be done to help other males navigate this corporate space? There just aren't enough of you guys there 😢
That’s why if you think the PIP is uncalled for document everything and engage with an employment lawyer ASAP. The goal is for you to fail the PIP so they can let you go without severance. If you engage with an employment lawyer during that process (and you want to leave the company) you can at least do it with 4-8 weeks of severance pay.
PIPs are purposely subjective, because when objective measures are met the person can't be legally fired unless their contract stipulates that they can be fired without cause. But in the US I think being fired without cause is legal in non unionized roles.
I put my employers on pip, For the last several months you missed 4 coaches can you commit to showing up to our coaching because they are crucial to my ongoing improvement, Sign and date here, any comments here 😂.. They were shook!!
Separating your professional and personal life is so important. You can be friendly to your coworkers but if you befriend them, be mindful of how that may change your professional dynamics. People will start treating you different because you're their friend they work with vs their coworker
If you're lucky, you can get a tiny little clique put together of people you can rely on. It's a group of like 4-5 of us that met at a previous company and we all kind of roll together to different companies. But yeah.... I'm two different people depending on who I'm talking to at my job lol
I hate those type of behaviour questions as well🤮, I literally can’t stomach them. When they ask that, I know I will bomb the interview. I interviewed with Jnj and was 100% qualified for the role/ they found me and asked me to apply but I bomb interview . Hiring Manager said “ your the person but HR didn’t like the answers so they gave role to someone that gave nice answers and knew Nothing !!about the job
Why can’t you come up scenarios to answer those questions about you having a problem and solving them? My interviews are like conversations. Yall need to practice
Yup. I emailed a company once and told them about their irrelevant questions and how ridiculous their interview was! It was such a pain. They asked me about a secretary job from 15 years ago. I let them know the job was not very significant for me to be able to answer their specific question.
girl lie. i lie in my response to any stupid question that doesn't have a concrete answer related to the role. "when was a time you displayed your capacity for leadership within your workplace?" girl give me .5 seconds and i'll spin you a nice fairytale since we're sitting here chatting about foolishness and not my applicable skill set.
While you were talking about the experiences you had at your previous jobs it really pissed me off! It’s so many unhappy people that refuse to see others happy and just be themselves. It’s so sad. Glad you made it on the other side of that! Just sent my Husband this video to watch!
Sir!! I felt ALL of this! EVERY word!! Been in corporate for almost 25 years and the only things that have changed are the names. At some point I plan to slow it down...I'm over the politics. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Same here, especially as an African (male) being in a management role. Those people are NEVER happy. I don't NEVER tell anybody about my personal life. My director once asked me about my age. I cut it off from his mouth and since nobody asks me a damn thing.
This is very insightful and I’m grateful I came across it! Thanks for sharing. The little/small talks about things I have no interest in or don’t relate to while at work is what makes me feel out of place! I’m learning to be okay with not having anything in common with some people because we grew up differently. I’m grateful that I’m not the only one who feels this way at work. Thank God for you sharing. Blessings brother!
Great video. Thanks for making this because no lies were told. I’m trying to find my way out of CA asap. So much racism, discrimination and passive aggressive ppl.
Exactly why I got into cybersecurity several years ago. Spent 5 months in the corporate environment in 2015 fresh outta college. 6’4, darkskin with locs and tats? I was definitely getting let go fast So glad Im in tech and its more about what you know, skills, certifications and just getting things done
Thank you for making this content I have never seen anything like. As a black man in Tech ( Construction Tech), I've had similar experiences. Usually, I get he's too blunt/brutally honest feedback. I'm learning to navigate that better, and it's interesting to hear how it's the same story. You have to work even harder to outwork the bias and or criticism of how you do your job.
Corey i felt you 100% the way during this video. I started my first job out of college and grad school at a transportation rental company *cough cough* Penske, and I went through so many hoops and hurdles with some staff members when I knew I did my job and was actually creating relationships with our customers. My downfall was having reactions to some of the disrespect and hidden animosity and I was put on a performance plan and let go a week later but I was over it it was affecting my mental.
6:26 OMG, they ALL say this. They can't prove anything that you've done wrong, so they fall back on this stupid lie. They tried that on me at a different accounting firm, but I was outperforming everybody and so many partners relied on me for their hardest clients. Those liars couldn't get their little agenda to work.
Rule #1 with work NEVER tell anyone your personal business or opinions that DON'T have to do with work. Some people out here find enjoyment in being 'weird' and gossiping. Get your bread and go home
I literally had similar experiences in not all, but multiple workplaces. Someone was always lying or maneuvering to get me out of my job while I’m a top performer or simply doing my work. Someone also “created” a HIPPA violation for me during one of my first big roles that I didn’t commit and I simply left. It’s exhausting and I refuse to go back to any workplaces to deal with that again. I’m all in on my businesses.
Wheeewwww the jealousy that struck your manager when she heard about your UA-cam opportunity is something serious. That hit dog was hollering 😭 Happy things are working out at Google. I feel like at tech companies with decent culture you can run into some chill, impressive people. And a lot of times, those people also have their own side thing going on so they won’t go spiral about yours like people who don’t have anything going on but work.
I’ve had very similar experiences in corporate America but that’s what made me start my Content Creation journey and it’s been the BEST thing I’ve ever done. I now make ALOT more than I did when I was full time and I don’t have to answer to people who have stereotype, pre-set ideas of who you may be. Success is the best get-back. 💰💸💵

This is SO relatable! My last role was at Dow Jones for the Wall Street Journal. My initial leadership was phenomenal but it later went all the way to hell after my original CMO, VP, AD, immediate global manager resigned -- I had no more advocacy or trust. Of course I was the only Black and gay man... chileee. I have never smoked more in my life. So many shared how they were on antidepressants. It is REAL! Thank you for this video!
Chile...as a blk woman, I am soooo connecting with your comment. I'm a Washington journalist, and clearly remember all the toxic people in management I had to deal with when I first arrived. Just about every move I made was criticized, and I knew it was because I was stereotyped as the "angry blk woman." I'm written up because I ask why a computer system has crashed again, but nothing is said about the whte guy who just cursed out loud and threw a chair across the room because he's stressed out. Thank goodness I have outlasted all of those toxic people.

Great breakdown. Those lazy & predictable microagressions in corporate are something but they have to work overtime to catch a real one slipping. You represent us SC guys well.
Based on my experience in corporate, I’ll explain why this statement is coming from a place of naivety. Hear me out because I’m not going to sugar-code anything: As a BM you will most likely have to become docile to fit into the corporate world, ain’t no “real ones”.. you have to take your time and thoroughly select your words in that office.. speaking your mind/keeping it real is not an option in most cases… The BM’s aggression is unwanted.. his correction is uninvited.. his overt desire to be in a position of authority is repulsive to them.. every time without fail, when the BM places his foot down, the atmosphere is polluted with tension.. It’s much easier for them to embrace the BW, because she will bust her butt for them.. she will be totally respectful and pleasant.. but more importantly, she will neglect family.. she will turn her nose up at her black male counterparts.. and marry the corporation.. In corporate settings I’ve seen white males stick up for the black women over the white woman.… treating her like a long time friend… I’ve even been made aware of secret romantic relationships between black women and white males in these settings… from them ppls vantage point, it is the perfect collaboration (BW & wm).. Of course it would be ideal to for us as BM to work together and build our own stuff.. but most of us are overwhelmed by the thought of unification.. we’re oblivious to the game that’s being played.. living by the standard of another group of men.. with only enough bandwidth to earn a decent living for our wives and kids.. and some of us have the nerve to consider ourselves “real ones”..

Came across your story on my feed, and this was pretty triggering for me because I went through the same thing. Had to leave corporate and revert back to my nursing job. Mentally recovering and ready to tackle again. Thanks for your story.
Not just corporate. MEDICAL. Been through all of these things in Medical / Research. PIP was the moment I quit immediately. I was the top person - factually, not my opinion. They recapped daily and weekly reports at meetings every morning and every Monday. And then quarterly reports. My quality rating was unmatched. That fake excited, volume based approached you mentioned doesn’t work. I built relationships with my people. And that was on a team that was the best performing hospital in the state. The funny part is that once people saw me leave, 2 or 3 people immediately said if he’s out, I’m out. 😂 also said and done they lost 24 out of 26 people from that team.
Wow. You & I have VERY similar experiences in corporate America. So sorry you had to experience this. There needs to be better systems in place for employees who experience discrimination & mistreatment.

3 months later, my "friend" I'd talk to all the time about all his problems fired me from my high paying ($250K+) corporate job

Provecho!!

Yep try living wirh them

Damn, the same thing happened to me not in our corporate job, but in a regular job, I trained my white coworker and he ended up getting the manager position and he even brought in his girlfriend who ultimately got her own office despite not even having a college degree orexperience running an office. This was in Florida, which is why I’m not there anymore.
That will teach them! Sadly they undervalued you!

I find as American overseas the work culture is a lot different and I feel people are not so fake.
My overall experience is that corporate is a culture. The better you match with the culture the better your experience will be. If you're not a cultural match, no matter how productive you are or how much money you generate for the company, they will IN MOST CASES (NOT ALL) find a reason and a way to transition you back out on the street.
Sad reality 😒
@@pearlsrevealed Not really
Yes it's "White" culture that is implicitly anti-Black. Calling it just "corporate culture" skirts around the core issue, RACE and the power dynamics of white supremacy.
Yes, really.
As a black male, working in corporate America , I’ve experienced ALL of this! 😮💨
It was surreal hearing literally the EXACT SAME situations I've experienced. It's like we all have to go through this, and it's exhausting.
It’s systemic? Damn it’s crazy how people are brainwashed to think of us and treat us certain ways. It’s ingrained in the system for us to be oppressed in ways we don’t even know exist. Scary
Sameee bro it sucks but at the same time it feels good to not be alone in this experience
Likewise!! Also, have...
Very exhausting, it’s tough to bare.
That lady who was harassing you was jealous of you. I'm sorry you went through that. I have had similar experiences.
I've had similar experiences as well which is why I watched his video. I'm glad that he was able to find something better.
Turned down interviews and job offers because the hiring Managers happened to be females. It's just what it is, females tend to come with a lot of issues and insecurities in the workplace and in life in general. Pettiness etc would stifle your productivity and lower your morale, so I'd never put myself in that type of environment.
Either jealous of him or liked him. I've experienced both in corporate America.
That is what I am saying
I work in healthcare and it’s definitely not for the weak, but having black team members that you CAN TRUST definitely makes the difference. I’m definitely thankful for the black women I have on my team with me currently.

Me too, I feel lucky.
Sometimes we treat each other the worst tho. It’s cool until you seem like you might get promoted or something, then they use anything you told them against you. You really can’t trust anyone at work.
Would you be happy if all white people just changed their skin color to black?
So true
As black men our image has been completely destroyed by the mainstream media. We are all dealing with this nonsense in the workplace and nothing is being done about it legally! At this point we should be building our own businesses and working together as black men. Nobody want to deal with gaslighting, lying, email wars, and false accusations everyday you go to work…too stressful
This!!!!!!!!
Yes, but the question is what is stopping this from happening?
Us in the Black community have allowed this and perpetuated this. As a black woman, I know not one single black "thug" in real life. But I've seen black thugs galore on TV and in the movies. That is our fault.
My previous manager gave me a 1% raise (while the rest got 3% and a bonus) because I didn’t eat lunch with them everyday 😒
That's insane, wow
That's childish
I just experienced going through a PIP. Even the HR personnel knew my managers were making me jump through unnecessary hoops. By the second meeting, i knew everything i did was under a microscope, I resigned. I already had another job lined up. My advice is to 'go where you are celebrated not tolerated.'
Brah you need a passport to go where you are appreciated
You won't find it in declining America
A PIP 9/10 is just a formal way to fire someone. Most of the time they make them unrealistic on purpose so they can get you out the door.

@@stevewilson6211 some people maybe don’t have luxury of doing that, for various reasons. But it a good thought
Smart king!..😉👏🏿
I LOVE THIS FOR YOU!! Salute 🖖🖖

Just because a person isn't engaged (gossiping, small talking, after work meetups, minding their business, unbothered, polite and all that) it doesn't mean they don't want to be there maybe they are just not into that or don't want to mix personal life with work which is torally fine

@laxus5 overseas you can be an introvert or extrovert and your job won't be affected based on who you are designed as a human being. Places like Europe you will feel more comfortable in the workplace as you don't have to do the most and be on a at will contract also. Maybe consider.

Right. As a black woman in Corporate, I find that you cannot be the introverted "black girl". I feel like they need you to be the jester or animated persona they see on TV in order to entertain them.
What does your firm do ?
It's the same thing for Black women who don't fit the stereotypical role too. I see you and empathize.

@@Web-DianeThey'll care if we start organizing and boycotting their businesses.

We need to organize and create our own..
Wow your story's inspiring -- I want to be an entrepreneur too in order to get away from all the toxicity! 😅
That PIP was so focused on things that are barely, if at all measurable. That leader's lack of experience shows.
@@Sababbby it is actually. For example, I am in NC and we are an at "will State" meaning you can be fired without explanation or reason.
Love this one Corey! Thanks so much for sharing, I just watched it with the husband. Much continued success to you.
Mental health is key! Choosing yourself is Key! Especially over a job! Good for you, that's amazing
I hate the"tell me about a time" recruiters. And the running down resume interviews down to 2000.
Yes as an black male in the Healthcare industry I can totally agree. 🙌
You know you’re hitting on my topics!!! I’m definitely sharing this video with my folks 💜💜💜 This video is giving me PTSD!!!!!!!!!
Tapping into your world!
Is tech a good Field would you recommend starting in it support
Inspiring bro. I endeavour to achieve the same thing because I'm tired of working in this system with these people 😤
@@TheGardenofEdun I feel you brother. You can do it, just don’t give up and never let your failures be your downfall. Failures are there to help shape you to become a super successful person.
😬 finance + journalism = extreme white habitus
I’m sorry you went through that
This is interesting because some gay black men say cooperate jobs don’t discriminate against black gay men
Chile...as a blk woman, I am soooo connecting with your comment.
@@mizzmolly7649 What I've noticed is Black men are faaaaar more comfortable being the only Black face in a White space, whereas Black women are a bit more cautious and reluctant initially. Your take.....
Sorry to hear this 😢
Thanks for this! I've experienced the same things you have. I've worked in product management for 10+ years and there will always be learnings along the way. Some people managers don't care and are looking to get you out of there. Sidebar, I NEVER tell colleagues what I'm doing with my vacation; most are or will be envious.
Thanks for sharing. I had a similiar experience to your Deloitte story at a Fortune 100 company. I've been working for the federal government ever since and have never been happier
Great breakdown. Those lazy & predictable microagressions in corporate are something but they have to work overtime to catch a real one slipping. You represent us SC guys well.
Based on my experience in corporate, I’ll explain why this statement is coming from a place of naivety. Hear me out because I’m not going to sugar-code anything:
As a BM you will most likely have to become docile to fit into the corporate world, ain’t no “real ones”.. you have to take your time and thoroughly select your words in that office.. speaking your mind/keeping it real is not an option in most cases…
The BM’s aggression is unwanted.. his correction is uninvited.. his overt desire to be in a position of authority is repulsive to them.. every time without fail, when the BM places his foot down, the atmosphere is polluted with tension..
@PrinceInawRakah man! Surgical Can't even add nothing to it lol

Listen, I’ve been in corporate roles for almost 20 years and have experienced all of the things you’re describing.
Every corporate job I had I’ve had similar experiences. I feel it greatly gets in the way of my work.
Wow. You & I have VERY similar experiences in corporate America. So sorry you had to experience this. There needs to be better systems in place for employees who experience discrimination & mistreatment.
