Rats, often underestimated and misunderstood, are incredibly intelligent, social, and affectionate creatures. Despite their reputation, rats are actually clean animals that groom themselves regularly. They are highly trainable and can learn tricks, respond to their names, and even use a litter box. Rats also possess a curious and playful nature, making them entertaining companions. These small rodents have a strong sense of companionship and thrive in pairs or small groups, enjoying human interaction as well. With their gentle and friendly demeanor, rats make excellent pets for both children and adults alike.

Never ever get just one rat. No matter how much you play and interact with it, you are not a substitute for another rat.
Think about it on the terms of getting kidnapped by aliens and never seeing another human again.
Thats right!
They need someone who understands them. Another species won't do. They need company from another rat.
What about rabbits
That goes for any animal

Three more things to keep in mind:
1. Rats have short lifespans, usually about 2 years or a bit more. They are prone to tumors near the end of their lives. You can factor in vet bills, and the losses will be heartbreaking. But they are indeed great pets, and once in a while you will encounter a particularly special companion you will especially cherish and never forget.
2. Be very careful to avoid mixing sexes unless you want huge numbers of pups.
3. Rats must constantly gnaw on things to keep their ever-growing teeth under control. They will not bite YOU, but charging cables, electrical wires, furniture, paper, textiles or anything else they can get to is fair game. If you let them roam, you must rat-proof the area and/or supervise.
Also, rats love to piss everywhere

Major downside to a pet rat is they live a much shorter life. Cats & dogs you can expect to have around for at least a decade, rats on the other hand is like 2 years.
Rats make amazing pets. I’ve had several through the years. Worst thing about them is they only live around 2 years. Females are susceptible to cancer. It would always break my heart that they’d leave us so soon. But they’re intelligent, so much fun, friendly, and will follow you around like puppies. And yes, they are sociable, so are always happiest with at least 1 rat buddy, but will still love their human companions.
Overbreeding is one reason for that, rats lived longer before than they do now.
My mom had a rat that lived til the ripe of age of 9 years old.
@@Alucard45000 thats awesome
@@Alucard45000Sad that overbreeding is causing it tho :(
@@shapeshiftingmedallion3974Eh, he's not 100% right. They have shorter lives mostly because of their nature as being prey animals. They're honestly the best pets, but in the wild, they live even shorter, usually less than a year. The issue is that predation has made natural selection unable to weed out genetic conditions, like: mycoplasma, hind leg degeneration, rampant amounts of cancer and tumors, bad vision, diabetes, kidney and heart disease, teeth malocclusion, and powerful allergies.
So by next year its safe to say all these rats will be dead

I’ve had pets my whole life up until now, being 37. They’re all in my heart, but he is the best pet I’ve ever had for multiple reasons
Fearless. Even when i vacuumed and had people over. VERY sociable. Even hung out with me when I would watch tv. Even had a little wine with me. Very calm cool and collective. And attacked a snake, which is how I found him in my friends snake cage. Made a deal with my friend to keep him if he’s alive before I leave, hence the name “Hercules”
lol cute rat
they’re actually omnivores, and while fruits, veggies, and pellets can cut it, they actually love cooked eggs! they can have a little bit of cheese too, it’s like cake to them in that it’s super tasty but too much will make them sick.
and sometimes my rats tried to nibble on me while “grooming” my fingers, but only ever really bit me if i was wearing gloves to clean their cage as they didn’t know my hands were under there.
They also make this grinding noise with their teeth called bruxing that means they’re happy! if they’re super happy and bruxing really hard, their eyes will boggle out, which can look a little concerning but doesn’t hurt them at all.
Reading the comments, never have i ever seen a factor of animal care so paramount to an animal's life as much as a rat's companionship with another rat.
In simple, regular terms/language:. "after I read the comments, I learned that the most important thing to consider, when keeping a rat/rats is the fact that they thrive in groups of 2 or more.
It's very important that rats are never kept alone.
Whenever possible, please keep rats in groups of 2 or more.
... If I may add. This advice about companionship goes for lots of other rodents eg: rabbits, Guinea pigs, capybaras, prairie dogs etc
People like to parrot other people's good points. 80% of the comment section is about that, and you will STILL find plenty of guys thinking '' That's not enough, they NEED ME, I'm the protagonist, I will be the one that tells them this. It has to be me ''. Even this comment has one of these guys telling OP that 2 rats are important. Thank god you were around bro, the other 1000 weren't clear enough, and OP obviously didn't know about the 2 rats either lol
@@TheDorianTube omg, I KNOW!! 😂 Aren't people SO pathetic and ridiculous? 😂 I mean, the way people care so much about animal welfare that even though there are already existing comments that offer similar advice, losers still decide to offer more advice and guidance about the care of animals. DO NOT KEEP ONLY ONE RAT. They're extremely reliant on their social bonds with other rats to thrive. If you get only one, it's life will be miserable no matter how much you play with it.
How about getting a cat to play with the rat?

THIS!
YES
So sweet I had 2 albino females when I was a child. They were so lovely and extremely intelligent and trainable. My sister and i and my mom trained ours to ring a bell when they wanted out of their cage..they had a litter box.. they did cute tricks and ate rice krispies out of our lips. They were like little puppies! my mother fell so deeply in love with them. Unfortunately after a couple years one got sick. My mom paid for her to have mammary tumors removed 2x and eventually they just came back and we had to let her pass.. soon after her death her companion passed away from heart break and she also suffered from the mammary tumors as well. I guess they are a common problem with them. Their names were Peanut and Buttercup... rest in peace little angels 🐁 🐭 ❤
(my mom was so heartbroken about the loss of these little angels that she said she could never have another pair because their bonds are so deep and they don't live long.. {note: the rats we bought were 2 feeder rats we saved from petco or the like. Not sure if other species live longer})
yeah they seem like amazing pets but I could never get one bc of this
@AlexaY82 I like your point of view thank you for sharing. I feel that as I've had to rehome quite a few different snakes bevause I had to move across the country to leave my abuser. Thanks for opening my eyes to a different way to think about this.
I had 2 male rats, brothers, named Sneezy and Snorkel. Snorkel had a breathing trait where he went "snork-snork" all the time. Sneezy sneezed alot. I taught sneezy to run up my arm on command. He liked to sit on my shoulders when I was in the kitchen, and receive treats.
They also wrap their tails around your arm if you hold them for ultimate cuteness and stability ❤
And they poop everywhere.
they dont poop outside the cage at all if you litter train them...they do piss everywhere though
I've had many rats, and i see a lot of people being sad about how short they live. After crying many times because of their death, i simply started being fine with it, not because i don't care but because now i think that living 2~4 years is actually fine to them and even if it is too little, it's awesome that i can make their short lives so happy and out of worries.
Unrelated but I am struggling with human deaths and this makes me remember someone telling me
"Getting to exist is an exceedingly rare opportunity considering the scale of universe that is quite possibly lifeless, which then reminds me that we’re not even really “supposed to” be here in the first place. So when I think of death I realize that it’s actually the default way of things for us as life forms, to not exist. Life is so incredibly rare and I think of life as kind of a blooper in the universe. Realizing this feels like an existential crisis at first, but then over time it’s actually comforting emotionally. Because it’s easier to accept the deaths of others when you think of how little a chance we had to be born in the first place. This mindset makes it much easier to handle the loss of loved ones, it’s just the way of the universe. Nothing more, nothing less"
I feel that yours and this person's mindset, really gives me some peace about my biggest fear, which is losing a loved one(pet included). 2 years is a gift for the rat and a gift for the world to have that precious rat!

I used to have pet rats!! They’re so cute and really silly. One of them would climb on the ceiling of the cage so we called her spider-rat when she did that.
Rats are AMAZING PETS. I grew up around all sorts of pet animals. Rats are by far the best pets ever. Truly amazing, intelligent, and social critters: much more so than dogs and cats. Big plus is that they are nocturnal, so when you get home from work, they are ready to play and hang out. The hardest part is becoming so bonded with them... they only live2-3 years. Oddly enough, they love to hang out and have snacks while watching TV. They are the perfect pet!
The biggest downside of rats is the lifespan.
On god. I had two rats, got em as babies, never knew how fucking cool a rat could be, and how much I could love them. That was the shortest 2 years of my life. I’ll never own another, solely for that reason. RIP Mashonka and Poilu

"if you get 1 rat" don't say that.. seriously, DON'T give people the idea of just getting 1 rat because humans physically cannot spend enough time with a rat to satisfy its social needs and the loneliness makes them absolutely miserable and can even kill them. I don't know how much I need to emphasise this but GET 2 RATS MINIMUM!
I love rats but unfortunately I can't bring myself to own one because of their short lifespans... I'd much rather have a long term companion which is why I own reptiles.
It’s not just about how much time is spent with them, but about the bonds between rats. They don’t bond with humans the same way, we can’t give them the same things they’d get from another rat.
@@izzy6032 point still stands, never say "if you get 1 rat..." that posibility should never cross anyone's mind when getting them as pets.

NEVER get just one rat. You cannot replace one of their kind!!!
Not if you wear a rat suit all the time
This is really important that I never see mentioned, NEVER KEEP YOUR RATS IN A CAGE WITH A WIRE MESH FLOOR FOR THEM TO WALK ON. This will lead to them contracting BUMBLE FOOT, and it's extremely painful and debilitating as well as incurable. I was sold rats from a pet store and the cage they recommend had a wire floor. A year or so later both my rats suddenly started hobbling around and could no longer run or jump. I found out what it was and was outraged that the pet store sold me this and doomed my rats to a life of pain. There was nothing I could do to help them besides try and make the rest of their life's as comfortable and pain free as I could. One of them died prematurely and then the other died of a broken heart I'm sure. I am still upset about this all these years later. Please inform any rat owners you know if they have their rats in any cage where primarily they have to walk on wire so they can get a new cage before it's too late.
I'm glad to finally see a rational guide that moves away from the extreme thinking that sticks to manuals that say "You should never raise just one Rat." It is better to raise two or more rats, and if you raise only one rat, there is an annoying condition that you have to spend a lot of time on rats, but still, it is not a “sin that should never be committed.” I only raised one rat, and I still get angry when I think about how idiots who only focus on “the text” without considering “the intent of the text in the manual” criticized me as if I were an animal abuser. The truth is, I pride myself on being better than most rats owners.
I miss my ratters. They are pocket puppies
The "bored and depressed" rat is such a mood ngl.
IT ISS!

bro said they need 5 star quality rat food while they be nesting in my attic feeding off dust particles and wood chips
I had 2 of them, and they were so sweet. They just dont live very long . Broke my heart when they died.
There is this female UA-camr who made a video addressing rats' unfairly short lifespan, advising is not to grieve when your pet rat passes away from old age, stating that the short lifespan also comes with a lifetime of love and fulfillment from their points of view... and that even though pets rats are but two to three years to us, we are their EVERYTHING.
They just live 2-3 years or something. Ye that's not much but rats are cute and very cute
Wish we had a guide like this for humans and their needs..
That would be the LONGEST and most complicated guide ever😭
Impossible since every human is engineered differently and what might work for 1 human might not work for another.
@@b1njjj95 Isn't that only mental? Physically we're mostly the same right.
@@OldeVikingOriginal But wouldn't the guide be a mental guide??
@@random_black_asian Hmm, you might be right there. Though there are a ton of guides for the mental side of things already; for example the stoic writings.
That rat looked like he was trying to drink a large glass of black coffee 😂😂😂 i remember when my dog got ahold of some redbull. She had the craziest zoomies 😂😂😂
So cute!
I think I'll get three ❤😊
If you want to get a rat never ever get just one. No matter how much time you will spend with your rat they need companions.
Rats have a better life then me😂
Me too bro.
No, specially you live in someones house and found u to kill you
@@Numi_numi What?? What are talking about!? Talk in proper English!😅
"Rats can be great pets"
8 diseases in their asses:
A testament of how smart they are: I feed my rats a mix of hand Blended dry mix and peas. They love the peas so much because they're like junk food due to the sugar content. I've noticed that they've not been eating the dry mix, so today I put in the dry mix first so they have some time to just eat that, and then I'd add the peas later. Frankie just ate the dry mix with no issues, but my other rat, Ducky (he's a lil bit of a porker but I'm making some progress on his weight loss because he's old and old+fat isn't a great combo for rats) was another story. His fat ass was sticking his head in the bowl curling up into a ball and pretending to eat the dry mix. Afterwards he'd pop up and look at me like "om nom nom nom all gone, mommy. Now where are my fcking peas, bish!🤬"
I had a rat when I was young. Seriously the best pet. Very loving
PLEASE don't get just one rat! They need a rat buddy for play, comfort and understanding.
I love my boys so much 😭💯❤️ they sit with me all night. I’m…unfortunately an alcoholic…I miss my seven year old son and these little buggers keep me from….well, they keep me from doing the absolute worst. Thanks to channels like this. I’m still here to leave this comment.
My daughter had to rats. She took good care of them. They died within two years. I'm still amazed at their incredibly short life span. They were moving like middle-aged folks by the end of the first year.😢❤🐀
Aw they are adorable!
@@AurbreyCampbell I mean some rats are adorable but others not too much
@Aurbrey Campbell Are YOU joking ironic with that pfp 😂
@Aurbrey Campbell Lmao you mistake a rat from the streets with pet rats.
Whats next your frenchie is a Wolf 😅
Besides money doesn't make it cleaner or cuter idk why you even mention it smh.
@Aurbrey Campbell If you have so many questions maybe stop talking and arguing then?
But that's your opinion if you find them not cute but they are definitely not disgusting lol you thinking to much of city rats.
wha- why is there an argument in the reply section..?
People really will look at these adorables cuties and say "NeEd An ExTeRmInAtOr???"
fr and they're probably cringe kids that also claim to be a rat king/queen smh
right! they are so mean to the pocket puppies.
I've had rats half my life, I'm 32. It does suck having to say goodbye every 2-3 years, but I enjoy their company. They have a certain appeal that other animals don't, plus they're unique bc not many people have them
Me:mom? Can we get a pet rat?
Mom: we already have rats! In the walls!
They are wonderful animals and I feel so lucky to have had pet rats, however it's also important to keep in mind that they are a lot more work than you'd expect and they can be extremely expensive. It was also brutal losing them so close together. Losing 3 elderly dogs over 3 years was bad, but losing 3 elderly rats in 2 months was even worse. 😢
Totally agree. My three beloved rats had vet bills that were comparable to cats or dogs. If anything, taking a rat to the vet may be more expensive because they require an 'exotics' vet for proper care. But the alternative - not seeking care when they are sick or hurt - is unacceptable in my opinion. The decision to get pet rats should go along with finding a vet and setting aside funds for medical care.
The old dishwasher at my college job once told me "never trust anyone with a pet rat 🐀."
Sounded funny and it stuck with me. 😊
I had 3 as a kid. They did not live long but they were such a joy to have around and I miss them dearly ❤
you should never get only one rat, no matter how much attention to give to it. They need another rat, a companion that’s on their level, to be with all the time. It’s like if a human could only be around a dog and never another person. Of course there are exceptions for some especially aggressive rats, but you shouldn’t find out about that till puberty.
And rats are not easy to care for. They are incredible, intelligent, and sweet pets- but they are also an incredible commitment. Do not underestimate how much work time and money goes into caring for rats, trust me.
Something that’s important yet not mentioned: Rats have VERY SHORT lifespans. Even when kept in captivity as pets. Typically they only live ~2-4 years with the oldest recorded rat only living up to 7 years old. They’re like the anti-parrot in this regard.
If that’s going to be a problem for you, then you really shouldn’t get rats.
Every animal is a dog when loved
I can hear the FriendlyRatForecast girl in the back of my mind saying: "hold them like they owe you money, because they will always owe you money" 😂😂😂
When you find a wild rat in you house: OH SHIT THERES A RAT GARRET CALL THE FUCKING POLICE.
When you have a pet rat: I love rats 🥰
Ok this is one of the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life
I love their lil grabby hands lol
You forgot they live short lives, which can be a con to some owners
Huge con! I got really attached and they die after 2 years 😢
@@michaelayala5394 sorry to hear that man :c
Not sure 'con' is the right word but regardless of that it is certainly something to bear in mind.
DID I JUST SEE IT DRINK COKE!?
*Asks my mom*
Mom:NO THEY ARE BAD
"They need a diet of fresh fruits" bro the wild rats in my house are stealing soap bars that smell like lemon 😭
We're literally have a kids' song about soap-eating rat here in indonesia XD
I loved all my rats especially the babies (accidentally bought a pregnant one) seeing them grow and develop their own personalities was amazing and yes sooo intelligent, playful and affectionate 🥰
I will never get a rat again! She was the smartest, sweetest animal that lived only 3 years and died in horrible pain from multiple tumors (they mostly all do). It was truly heartbreaking.
Three years is actually a very long life for a rat, so in that sense, you were lucky. :-( Yes, tumors in old age are common and that's why it's so important to have a vet fund set aside when you are a rat owner. They are small pets, but they can require expensive care. It's unfortunately pretty common to have to consider euthanasia toward the end because of all the health problems they can have. It's so hard to watch our beloved little friends suffer.
“If you’re thinking about getting one rat”
NO. If you have one. You can have 2+. There’s no significant differences in care or resources. Please don’t share videos that normalize owning one rat. Everything else was wonderful but they shouldn’t be kept alone unless under extremely rare circumstances
getting only one rat is animal abuse, they will get depression and pass away without a ratty friend
I'd even go as far as say that 3 is the minimum, which means more space, more maintenance, and more commitment. However, I also tend to argue that dogs need to be kept in social pairs. If they're "social animal" or considered a "pack animal", there should be 2 (preferably more) of the same species in one group (or for dogs, same breeds)
I just bought a rat and hamster that should be good enough.
@@User_92020 thats abusing BOTH those animals..... rats need more rat companions while hamsters should be kept separately from others... please tell me you knew that and are just trying to troll, this isnt very funny.

Why do people care so much that I only have one rat? Why does it matter to them?
Domestic rats are adorable and clever lil creatures. My brother used to sneak his rat into school in his jumper, it's favourite place to sleep was in his armpit 😅
Fyi - I am NOT recommending that you should sneak your pet rat into school. Keep your chaos potato puppies safe.
These giant whiskers 😂😍...I'm allergic to rodents (and cats) alas, but heck are they cute.
My dad had one rat named Rocky. He was black and white. He didn't need a companion because my dad took great care of it. He lived to be around 7 or 8 years old
