    THIS WORKS! I'm 63 years old and weight 112 lbs, and the only other way I can get the slide locked is to use an empty magazine. BUT THIS WORKS, also helps to have your hands and arms close to your body. And as AirGunner Bob_O points out in the video, keep pressure up on the slide stop and shove that slide back, don't worry about it catching, if you have pressure up on the stop and you give it a good hard fast shove, IT WILL CATCH and stay open. THANK YOU AIRGUNNER BOB!!!

    I have had my 9MM Shield for years, bought it cheap, never shot it and kept it as a safe queen. I wasn't going to keep it till I happened upon this video. The racking and lock back without a mag was nearly impossible. Never heard the slide go metal to metal either.
    Bought a new RSA and the difference is like night and day. Very smooth rack and lock back with or without mag. Now I feel more confident and will go to the range and check it out. Thanks so much for this video.

    I own the 9mm sub version of this. You are correct that it has a very strong recoil spring. When I first got it I was disappointed that it was that strong a spring. I have not had any issues racking it, but using your technique makes it much easier for me. I'm 65, and this is my first EDC subcompact. I've been carrying the 3.6" 9mm Shield, which is much easier to rack. Thanks for the great lesson. I've been shooting for 50 years, and never had a firearm with this much spring tension. It's also somewhat snappy at the range, but I'm still putting the rounds where I want them. Love this little guy

    Ive seen this problem on a few different sub compacts that use the captured double recoil spring,.. particularly XD-s and Shields as they're the most common...I have the Shield myself too and I love it, It is harder than others to rack, but thats just the way the double captured spring system is on those ..

    • @toynazi
      @toynazi 8 років тому +3

      +Eric “PoorManPrepper” K You need to rack it back and leave it locked back for a few days. That will loosen up the spring a little. Also rack the slide a bunch. Tight tolerances are not a bad thing at all.

    Ok I figured out my problem. I bought my shield manufactured in 2016 shot it twice. Bought 2 extra mags after purchase. My problem was slide was not staying open after last round fired. Apparently I have a bad magazine. With the other 3 magazines, slide locks open when empty. So I guess a new s&w magazine can have a weak or bad spring out of the box. Just fyi if your having an issue and need some advice.

      My experience, they are tough on pretty much all striker fires pistols. Some more then other. As mentioned, it is a slide lock but can be used to release the slide as well. However, under no circumstances should you release via slide lock without having a loaded magazine inserted (minimum dummy round, live round prefered). It damages the internals and causes premature wear & cracks, leading to breakage. Similar to never dropping the hammer on a unloaded AR15.

I'm also 6'2' 225 and I have a hell of a time. My wife can't move it an inch. I watch others take their thumb and forefinger and have no problem at all. I have 2 other M&P and they are a ease to work. What's up should I return it? It's no good to me now and I can't see it getting better with use if I can't use it to begin with.
    I'd be a fool to carry this pistol as it is now. I suppose it's time to call Smith and Wesson. I'd prefer a complete new one. I've not fired a round yet.

    • @BullseyeBob
      @BullseyeBob  7 років тому

      David Soom If it takes as much force as you've described, I'd say maybe the recoil spring assembly is bunched up in some way. • @davidsoom6383
      @davidsoom6383 7 років тому

    • @BullseyeBob

    • @davidsoom6383
      @davidsoom6383 7 років тому

      It makes me think that someone at the factory had done it intentionally. I've worked at assembly line jobs before and I know of the frustration and I've read where factory workers at the major auto companies in Detroit in the 60's intentionally would mark a car to be a lemon and workers, so inclined, to do such would do their part to screw up said marked car. Perhaps it's an urban myth but it sounds real to me and there were a lot of lemon cars back then. Lets hope that the fine people of Smith and Wesson aren't doing that but I can't imagine how the spring could have gotten that way by accident. Who knows, problem is solved, I took your advice and broke the gun down and discovered the problem. I almost was afraid to do anything before I returned it thinking I might be blamed for the problem myself. I'll enjoy the gun and await the nice
      $75 rebate. What do you think is going on, do you think they are going to come out with a Sheild 2.0?

      The point is that a fair amount of Shields have a defective recoil spring right out of the box. People buy these without knowing it only to get home and find that the slide won't go back all the way. Then they're stuck sending the gun back to S&W or waiting for S&W to send them a new RSA. Have a look on the forums or do a google search and you'll see how widespread this problem is.

      I traded in the Taurus PT111 G2 for a shield. The trigger was 8lbs! You can't have it lightened by a gun smith or yourself because you will void the warrenty, and you can't send it back to have it lightened because if it's with in 4-9 lbs they will just send it back and they don't even pay for shipping to or from. I shot 6 rounds through my shield and INSTANTLY loved it. I put 150 through the G2 and hated it simply because of the trigger.

    Your technique is nothing new. If you read carefully the instructions, it explains that same technique how to lock the slide back WITHOUT MAGAZINE. Obviously if you have an empty magazine in the pistol, the slide will lock back without no problem. So that is absolutely no issue.

    • @BullseyeBob
      @BullseyeBob  3 роки тому

      You apparently missed the point. The issue is with a defective recoil spring assembly that won't allow for the slide to travel the full length it needs. It's well addressed on gun forums when the shield was a new release.

  • @markkirkland1878
    @markkirkland1878 3 роки тому +2

    Don't believe this guy, it's nobody's technique, smith came out with the EZ pistols after the shields came out. This was for a reason.
