You mentioned that with real anamorphic you gain image on the left and right of frame, but the specific thing that I think is worth mentioning about anamorphic over cropping 2:39:1 is that if you shoot a 2x dequeeze coefficient, your 50mm lens now has the perspective of a 50mm but the FOV of a 25mm. Knowing that detail about the lens is huge for a DP. If you crop 2:39:1 on say a spherical 50mm, you have the perspective of a 50mm with the FOV of a 50mm. The mismatch of perspective and FOV is one of the biggest selling points for anamorphic. Cheers man!
The main benefit of anamorphics for me is actually the difference perspective. When using a wide anamorphic like 40mm or 35mm (on S35) you get a very natural perspective, similar to the human eye you can’t get with cropping a spherical lenses. Also long lenses look much less claustrophobic, so you can generate real pressure with long lens close ups without getting too tight.
One of the advantages of an anamorphic lens is it gives you the compression characteristics of a longer focal length while retaining the wider horizontal field of view of a shorter focal length. For example, a 50mm lens with a 2x stretch will have the the same horizontal field of view as a 25mm spherical lens, but without causing the perspective distortion typical of the wider lens. Cropping something shot with a spherical lens does not yield the same effect.
Even cheaper and safer way to get oval bokeh, is to have a oval cut out in a filter and put it on the front. Shoot the lens wide open. Also you can have different shapes cut outs to get stuff like stars, hearts and other tacky things.
love how these videos are looking these days, I mean they always have looked good, but it's cool seeing the progression and some really polished and gorgeous images in these. Thanks for the inspo as always! Cheers
I've been following Tito Ferradans for years, and even his channel being relatively small, is cool to see how is basically impossible to talk about anamorphic lenses on youtube without citing him.
The mathematically pleasing thing about 1.8x squeeze is that for film or digital 4:3 sensor/film projection area it stretches to an *exact* 12:5 aspect ratio (aka 2.40:1 which isn’t the same as 2.39:1 which it’s often rounded of to).
Thanks as always Simon, I've been experimenting with bokeh filters recently and have definitely noticed their limitations! Really cool to see those in-camera mods.
I'd have loved if you compared them side by side! Afaik, an anamorphic has a distinct compression effect due to having a wider vertical FoV than an horizontal one
Nice video... The harder-to-find streak filter is the clear one. Obviously, a streak filter does not alter the aspect ratio of the lens but provides "suggestive" anamorphic flare "effect" under specific circumstances
Great video, well explained. I also have a converted Helios 44-2 but with the aperture blades removed so I have to use a variable ND filter to control exposure.
I tried out the anamor-fake look but there’s that extra something special that real anamorphic lenses have over just faking the look. Plus, like you addressed here, the oval shape is lost when stopping down using oval inserts.
Who is watching a movie for oval bokeh anyways. I think most people put far too much emphasis on the unimportant characteristics of anamorphics. I actually prefer round myself and is one of the reasons I've stayed away from using them for the most part; that along with the tacky flares.
@@yargnad While I get your point, its a question of a set of subconscious details (bokeh, flare, wider perspective) that combine to create an allure, a sheen that no viewer would have singled out individually, but that beautifies the presentation as a whole. For example, nobody listens to a song for the studio condenser mics that were used. But if I took that mic away and recorded the singer with a standard dynamic mic, it would lose a certain magic and air that most listeners would describe as "not as good as the last song".
Very nice video! I work in the VFX industry and most of the movies I have to deal are shot in anamorphic, but for my personal works I prefer to shot with normal lenses, and just add a 2.35 mask and a diffusion filter if I want a bit more of a cinematic vibe! I admit I'm a bit lazy! :P
Wow! This is the first video by you I've had show up ony You Tube reccomended videos in about 2 years. Your a bit older now and still showing us cool stuff. I'm curious are you still shooting with Canon? I used to use my T3i back in the day. But now use a 90D and an R7.
welcome back! I do occasionally use the T3i, but ever since I did a collab with Nikon and they gave me a Nikon Z6 (I didn't break my "I'm not buying a new camera" rule) I've used that for most projects.
After watching to the end of the video my first reaction is.... "WHAT?!!" you talk so softly like if your in a library I can barely hear you X.x and I'm watching this video with earbuds on!
I haven't seen any way to really fake the anamorphic flares accurately yet, maybe sticking to overlays is the best you can do, have you found any way or filter that actually looks like anamorphic flares instead of a dirty lens?
Even if you don't record in 4K, please render and upload the video in 4K. The compression on UA-cam would be way kinder, the dark blockiness doesn't have to look this bad, bub.
If you watching on a computer. UA-cam says that over 75% of the viewers are watching on devices (phones, tablets). So? Why still bother? You also save up space.
Hey Simon, I've watching this channel for about 5 years, I have to say that I prefer the 17 year-old Simon Cade. The younger Simon had smart writing, you had special opinion about filmaking, you and me are the same age but I really admire that 17 year-old Simon Cade. 4 years ago, more people watching your channel than now, have you ever consider going back to that style ?
I hate that the modified helios lens is even called anamorphic. It's no different than putting one of those bokeh filters with the oval cut out shape and maybe a blue streak through the middle. The bokeh and flare are not what makes a lens anamorphic. It's strictly the horizontally compressed image that makes a lens anamorphic. Anyway, the mod is cool for the helios but the same thing can be achieved with the screw on bokeh lens without messing with the optics, and it's less effort :)
What ever works for your Art, and i say cheaper the better. But first a spherical lens distortion is on all angels cause its, Spherical, Unlike Anamorphic! field of view is something you cant also achieve on cropping a Spherical lens. Also you can not replicate the Lens effect with a filter. the nature of the Curved Anamorphic lens will make the Flare be more dynamic depending on where it is located unlike a filter which will always have a consistent lenght. another factor is the Chromatic aberration happening on the sides of the Anamorphic which is not the same on Spherical. overall, Anamorphic have more going than Spherical and can make a shot more dynamic. though shooting with it is much harder
This is Hackery, he doesn’t even mention the most important quality of anamorphic (flat flattering lensed faces while having wide vistas at same time, using spherical you’ll still have drivers license wide angle distorted faces close up to camera during wide shot). Talk about a hacks way to get easy views. Explain everything, we don’t need another disinformation filmmaker UA-cam channel.
ANAMORPHIC. It's in the TITLE. Omfg I was wondering why you were saying "animal thick" over and over again and why the hell 16:9 would be considered "animal thick". I'm so fucking dumb.
Thank you, Simon. for all these years of teaching us filmmaking

I forgot all about this amazing channel I’m so happy I found it again
Nobody's gonna talk about him eating weetabix dry???

barrel distortion is so underrated in terms of anamorphic quality...
All movies have roundish doors.
Nobody hates that on anamorphic.
But on a normal lenses, all pixel peepers act like monkeys on their monthly cycle.
Your videos are very calming to me.
Sooooo good to see you back mate 👍 That beard looks good too. Keep it up 👍
Great idea for comparison and well executed. Thank you for sharing these thoughts and all the beautiful imagery :)
You can also get the fake lens flares with a clear plastic string, I did it with a cheap 50 mm 1.8 and a Rebel T3i
Thanks!
Miss my T3i.
always a good way to start off the day when simon uploads

Wow man!! Thank you! 😮👍👍
you’re welcome!
You can actually do this mod with autofocus lenses, you can do it with any lens that you can get to the aperture mechanism!
Great video Simon!
thanks Bruno:)
Great video, well explained. I also have a converted Helios 44-2 but with the aperture blades removed so I have to use a variable ND filter to control exposure.
I did the same exact thing, except I used an anamorphic filter (with an oval shaped cutout) from Vid-Atlantic. I loved the results from it.
The man, the myth, the legend.
Keep up the great work dude!!!
thanks Daniel :)

This is awesome! Thank you for this, Simon! I've been looking for a way to achieve this look without going into debt! Haha!
Very good video, as always!
thanks Andrei!
I did it with an analog Sigma 28-70mm and it worked well. Also did that with my samyang 35mm.
Great video my guy!
Thanks, I never knew about the oval inserts and just so happen to have a broken lens
Nice overview!✨
The "great Joy" lenses looks really amazing. Where did you buy it? Only on Indigogo?
DSLRguide = A filmmaker's guide to making life easier.
Love His Quality Always Good Love it!
Pretty good. I just ordered a converted Helios from Ukraine for $144. I have a few other 44-2 lenses here. It was just a lark.
Just bought the sankor 16c damm that lens is sharp. Taking lens is the Olympus 42mm 1.2. Lovely combo!
Really enjoyed the music in the end section, do you have a link? Cheers

what is that last scene from? it looks gorgeous.
was just shooting a test scene for the 50mm lens on Brighton Pier at sunset! glad you like it!
Ill lend you one of my Lomo square fronts to do a $1500 vs $10,000 anamorphic video
I would love to take you up on that offer Robby - will email you
I`m really interested in modding the Samyang lenses. Difficult?

What lut did you use on last frame?
no LUTs, just graded in resolve :)
Why is the lighting strange or is it the lens or camera ?
What about anamorphic adapters? Are those any good?

Helios is built like a tank, it's really hard to brake it
too bad the video is super compressed and in 1080p so you can hardly see
Isn’t that the way most people consume videos nowadays?
“Consume”……. 🙈

ill pay $60 get me a lens

Can you compare to a phone anamorphic 😮that’s what I use 😊 and I still enjoy life ❤
that Cineflare flares are horrendous :) they don't look natural at all
Nice a new video
