@@NeonShores honestly, what I’m talking about may just be for the fx6, but I’m pretty sure when you record in raw, even though it says that it’s a 16:9 image, you’re getting more vertical resolution than what would be for a true 16:9 image which helps for the desqueeze
I have the Lumix S5 IIX with Sirui saturn 50 / 75 mm and I no longer feel like using my spherical lenses. To take advantage of the potential of these lenses, it is best to do it in 3:2 Opengate.
Both the camera and my external monitor squeeze the image to 1.5x. Therefore it is barely noticeable with a 1.6x lens. Later in post-production I adjusted it to 1.6x. S5IIX have the option to stabilize 1.5x anamorphic lenses, it is the option I use. I suppose that in a next update Panasonic will support 1.6x anamorphic lenses. Regarding the use of anamorphic lenses, the Lumix S5IIX is one step ahead of the rest. The resolution of the resulting image is 9523 x 3968 pixels.
I'd love to see these compared to the Blazar Remus set if you ever get a set. They definitely differ in character and look and it would cool to see them in action on the right documentary. I have a Sirui and like it, but the Blazar character really goes crazy (which could be a bit to much for some) but I like having some more exciting lenses for the shoots that benefit from the anamorphic distortion!
I love Sirui anamorphic lenses! I prefer the beautiful blue streak but I'm "warming" up to the gold streak versions that are out there. Thanks as always for sharing!
So fun fact...anamorphic lenses weren't actually made to go on cameras. They were made to go on early movie projectors for cinema to fill up a "wide screen" in the theater. Well, filmmakers being filmmakers, they said "does that mean if I put this on my camera...I get a wider FOV!?!?" And yea. The rest is history.
btw. have you seen the UURig foldup filter holder ? with them on the 50 or 75mm you can get super fast closeups with diopters which is super easy and fast on set
Thanks, Luc! I've never owned or used an anamorphic lens, but like so many others, I've thought about them many times. The issue for me is that we live in a world of 16x9 screens. I have no idea what the number of hours of content consumed on 16x9 displays vs hours in movie theaters is, but I have to imagine that despite the egos of famous filmmakers, the overwhelming majority of film and video works are consumed on 16x9 screens. Therefore, any time you use a non-16x9 aspect ratio, you simply give your viewers a smaller image. Yes, wide aspect ratios have a vast cinematic feel. A 2.35:1 piece on a 16x9 screen might be vast, but mostly it's small. Projects shot in something like 1.85:1 have such small black bars at top and bottom that they don't feel small and do have a bit more cinematic feel. But beyond that, I feel like wide-screen projects might look great to a few theater goers, and then are just diminished viewing experiences for the like-it-or-not much larger viewing audience at home.
i love these lenses more and more, personally i think these lenses are extremely underrated. I had the Blazar A set + the 85mm, i have two vazen full frame, the saturn set, the venus 50mm and some vintage anamorphics, Blazar Nero and while many affordable anamorphics have deal breakers for some projects, be it the weight, the lack of sharpnes, weird characteristics that are cool for some things but literally deal breakers i feel like the saturn have no deal breaks, sure they could have more character but you can add optical drift in davinci and it has enough character imo. but it is als shorp and clean enough for techy projects ... they are amazing
I have the Blazar Remus 1.5 squeeze. I have the most simple rig. Monopod with lens on my R3, view/shoot in the squeezed format. Just use the push in/magnify button to manual focus then hit record. Works absolutely fine!
You might find better results shooting raw which would record more of the full sensor, getting you a better desqueeze. Sony really needs to support open gate. Their sensors are more than capable
I'm super interested in trying out some anamorphic lenses. I picked 7artisans vision series lenses to use on my C70, and absolutely love them. I really want to try out their anamorphics also now.
These lenses are cool, maybe not for me, but I'm sure other people will make some great stuff with these that otherwise wouldn't have been possible. I like that they don't flare like crazy, you could conceivably use these in a lot more "normal" projects.
I had a chance to "play" with these during IBC. My biggest issue with them is minimal focusing distance of 3 feet (0.9 meter) and Sirui doesn't produce diopters
Cropping spherical isn't poor man's anamorphic, It's called shooting cinemascope. Hollywood directors do it all the time. Anamorphic has "characteristic" that not all people want (flare, breathing, distortion, soft corner etc). Sony camera lacks of open gate so 1.6x and 2x is way too wide. I'd suggest to use 1.33x for 16:9 sensor. C'mon Sony.
Shooting cinemascope is shooting with anamorphic lenses. You're thinking 2-perf Techniscope, which was the poor man's Cinemascope. But it's still super valid, and a classic look, especially in the spaghetti westerns.
I think with the latest firmware update for the fx6 that came out in May of '24, there is a 1.5x option which would maybe get you a closer desqueezed look in camera while shooting!
Definitly through that I would have trash them with you ahah. You're right, small, sharp and not too much caracter make them an option for doc as they won't afraid that much producer or channel. Camera sensor /resolution / aspect ratio still is a problem for sure. Great review Luc and thanks for the time and effort !
I just shot my latest short on the OG sirui m43 lenses. They make more sene by giving you a 1.3 squeeze which means on all 16x9 cameras you get the classic 2.35.1. 1.5 lenses give you a weird too wide frame thats not correct on a 16x9 sensor. Oh and the OG lenses that give you the better 2.35.1 are also in E mount!
13:27 this only applies for the horisontal plane, in the vertical plane they are 35/50/75 (correct me if I`m wrong) I would love sirui to release some 1.33x squeeze factor full frame lenses. I had the 35/50/75 of the first gen anamorphic they released, but they don`t cover FF
Just got done watching Monster Inside: America's most extreme haunted house and i think it was the first doc ive actually watched in a nultra wide form factor. Not sure if it was actually filmed anamorphic or just cropped to look that way, but it wasnt veritas. So they may have just black bared the top and bottom of everything.
There are some even more interesting IMO anamorphic lenses that are lightweight - Atlas Mercury or their chineese brother - Blazar Remus. Would be interesting to hear about them from you - from you perspective.
@@the_black_douglas9041 Partially agree. Mercuries are heavier (about 1,2 kg), but still very light for an anamorphic lens. Price tag is x7 higher compared to Sirui but still on the more affordable side. Remuses on the other hand are 700-800g - so can be considered light, and price-tagged close to Sirui. So I think that comparison is still relevant. IMO
Those 3 lenses still come with considerable cost, especially if not something one might use on a regular basis. Do you have any thoughts about some of the "add-on" anamorphic adapters? Sirui even makes some for considerably less. It would be interesting to see a comparison between the add-on and the purpose built versions.
You’re not wrong, they’re still expensive. My personal opinion is that the adaptors don’t look good and I’d rather just shoot spherical. Maybe you’ve had a different experience, but for me they feel like a gimmick and the worst of both worlds. To each their own though!
@@LucForsyth Hi Luc, and thank you for your reply. Have you actually tried any of the adapters for comparison to the "prime" anamorphics? This guy did an interesting test of various adapters: ua-cam.com/video/fzLPtw8oMmU/v-deo.html
Thank you for this video Luc. Informative as always. Could I request you do a video on your doc rig please? I noticed you had handles on this one so I’m assuming it allows you to switch from handheld to shoulder quickly? Thanks in advance 🙏🏼
I have the cheaper ones by Sirui. I think they're called the S35, about half the price. They aren't bad, only work on super 35 sensors. I've never used them for any of my professional work, just my shorts.
I am no filmmaker BTW but I really enjoy your channel., but I just got the 24mm apsc for my z30. 3:2 open gate is the key, really want these for my S5II but can only rent for now. Sony really needs to support anamorphic better and offer open gate.
And Cam Mackey literally just released a video about it. 2 of my favorite channels releasing videos on the same day!
For now, the best option on Sony is to shoot raw, which can kinda defeat the purpose of the lightweight anamorphic setup 🥲
