a version of the story that i like, even though it’s more of a modern speculation, is that Zeus came to Persephone with Hades’ offer of marriage and Persephone agreed to it. Knowing her mother would not allow it, they had “staged” the kidnapping in order to be with one another, and Persephone bargained with Demeter to be in both places at certain times of the year. Maybe she even figured out that she missed the above world and became unhappy with being constantly surrounded by the souls and unable to fully express her powers of Spring and bringing life.
