Thanks for this video. It's great to see how these repairs are actually done before trying them myself. Not much of a wrench, but it gives me confidence to try them myself..
Thank you for posting this. I watched a few other videos on this topic and they didn't explain a couple of things quite as clearly as you did. With your instructions, I was able to get my battery swapped in no time. It being a lithium ion battery, it was super light as well!

I watched your video on battery replacement and my question is where you able to use your tender pigtail with the lithium battery and a lithium tender with no issues ? Thanks Ray
When you disconnect Negative and Positive, unscrew Neg first and get it out of the way and then the Pos so you won't create a spark. Then reconnect pos. wire first then the Neg
If your careful and do it a lot it doesn't matter. If you want to do it by the book and your worried about things then the perfect procedure is Remove Negative First, then positive Put positive back on first, then negative. Again, we have done it for so many years, we are just careful not to touch tings besides the battery with the terminals.
THANK YOU FOR THIS ! as i'm not much for wrenching, and a leave it 'to the pro's' guy i was able to replace my battery today and save a little $$. thank you again !
Ryan, a small plastic cable tie or a bread wrapper twist tie can also be used to tie the positive or negative wires together. Even an old shoe lace. Just something to tie the wires together. Depending on how often yo go into the battery this may help.
Thnx Ryan - very helpful info especially about that battery strap - I changed my battery out in 5 mins - but I went with a $169 Duralast lead battery with 385 CCA instead of a Lithium. I last used extra large Lithium Motorsport batteries 2 yrs ago and they only lasted one season.
Another important topic is to speak about is battery lead removal sequence. I mean to remove the battery, remove negative lead first this will prevent a short circuit with bike's frame when you're removing the positive lead from the battery AS well to put back battery in place, connect positive lead first because if you mess up when doing negative connections like short to frame the negative post and the negative lead, nothing will happen if key switch is in OFF state. but doing reverse, i mean connect negative main wire to negative battery post and messing up with positive main wire with battery positive and frame, worst will be bursting battery or melting wire or screwdriver or making a hole in the frame.
Appreciate the help I have owned Shovel heads all my life this is the first new Harley-i ever had 2014 ultra limited this is the first Battery I had to put in it I just didn’t wanna miss anything appreciate it
Awesome. Yah, some have never done it and it might be their first intro into wrenching on their own bike. It had been requested many times, so we got around to doing it!!

Many thanks for this information. I have a tri glide and your instruction were spot on correct. I wish you would have more videos on HD trikes as they have a few things that are different from two wheel Harleys.
Good little video. When you reinstall the batt. put the pos. on first, neg. last. That way if you hit metal putting the pos. on you will not spark because the neg. is not installed.
That's funny because I was going to ask the same question. I know cars are different, but I was always taught that when removing the battery, you disconnect the negative FIRST and reconnect it LAST. Have I been doing it wrong this entire time?

I changed my battery as covered by this video but since I’ve changed my battery I have to put my security code in EVERY TIME to start my bike. It’s killing me of a pain in the ass to put in a 5 digit security code every start. I also changed my FOB batteries to make sure that isn’t the issue. Do you have any advice. Thank you. Joe
Thanks for the video, I found it very helpful. It may not be necessary, but I pulled the main fuse on my FLTHTK before swapping out the battery just in case.
There's a small plastic box, about the size of a cigarette lighter in front of the caddy tray. Anyway, no matter how much I tog and pull the plastic would not lift up. I'll keep trying.
Hi there ! Interesting vid ! A mere question (probably a naif one for you), carrying on the two main electric cable's connecting procedure, why not doing it exactly the contrary as the removal one ? Removing >>> first neg then pos...... reinstalling >>> first neg then pos ? Greetings from 🇨🇭 Stay well and have a safety ride !
so batteries are different, we don't have to mess up with charger selection for bench use but what's happening with the small black box usually found in front of the bike used as solid state voltage regulator ? Will i have to call my HD dealer to have a matching voltage regulator box if i use Li-ION battery ??, Please put that topic in your video
Ryan, I just replaced my Harley lead acid battery with a Harley lithium battery 🔋. When I turned my 202 18 tri glide on, I noticed that the e give light stayed on longer than expected. And was yesterday. Today (5/4/2022) I decided to go on ride. However, the engine light still stayed on for the hour ride. Question, why is the engine light not turning off?
Finally went lithium battery SHORAI , QUESTION is battery charging outlet the tethering outlet the bike has a factory one do I avoid that one and connect the one that comes with the with the new charging lithium battery charger / maintenancer/charger it comes with its own positive negative to the two prong male female prong tether outlet should I utilize that and avoid the stock Harley one or should I use the Harley one will be just as acceptable Or either way works

I had to use lock tight. Last year riding back from Laconia i noticed my volt meter on the bike jumping around, i stopped at a rest area and shut the bike off to get a drink and when i tried to start the bike it clicked and was dead. I noticed the positive side had loosened over time beween the vibration etc..the reason I’m watching this is because it happened again! That positive cable is very sensitive if not cranked imo.
Kinda omitted a step in the seat install there Ryan! I noticed the passenger audio control switch cable dangling from the bottom of the seat. Also, I agree with previous comment about hooking positive up FIRST!

Great Video but you really should redo it since people don't read comments when viewing and following the instruction. The Negative Terminal should ALWAYS be connected last while in your video you did connect the Positive terminal last. This could cause an unsuspecting person to create a spark in an area that has battery gasses and blow up the battery or even worse send an electrical surge through out the system and fry electronic components.
I have a 2014 Police road king. Need to know how to remove the police seat to replace the battery. I plan on leaving it on, I do the funeral escorts in Florida. Thx, Doc E
4 bolts visible under the tractor seat. Remove them and the long metal bolt. Then there are a couple visible bolts to remove the plastic cover piece. Then you remove the battery from there like in the video. Ride safe

@@RyanUrlacher Take another look at this. My CVO Ultra sounded off in the street until I connected the new battery and it was deafening. The service manual suggests to remove the 40 amp main fuse which I did on my second battery replacement with no issues.
very helpful right up until how to actually remove the old battery. Nothing is said or shown about that. My HD battery has no strap and there is no room to reach in to pull it up. have to look elsewhere for that
So... my Friends in the "Trades" tell me the "lithium-ion" batteries are NOT for cold weather. They say, when on jobs in the winter they have to warm (placed on the dash with the De-froster and Blower on high) the lithium-ion Battery(s) to get them to work in their tools that use them. Living in the Great White North (AKA the Tundra - AKA Minnesota) I've been known to ride when the temp is below freezing. What do you know about the battery you installed and its ability to start the Scooter in the cold weather? Thank you for your video and time! Willie
I ride in temps below freezing all the time here like right now. check our video out and I test it in freezing temps. I explain it all ==> ua-cam.com/video/yDgUPSTYYL8/v-deo.html
Ryan, Thank you for the 411! The original battery in my 2011 Street Glide will not start the bike in colder weather. It's time to replace it. I don't mind paying a little more if it's worth it. Thanks again! Willie
I hate electrical gremlins, I don't know if it's because of the climate in Florida but I use a product called OX-GARD on all electrical connections, any of the plugs I unplug any of the bulbs I change, seems to help
Just a suggestion, if you have that many accessories it’s better to have a long terminal bolt & a dab of blue loctite. You don’t want those terminals to come loose on a stretch of dark road
Thx. Never had a problem to date. They stay plenty tight. Just finished an 8 day, 7 state, 3000 mile trip. All good. A guy could certainly throw threadlock on if he want's.
I changed my battery but my security alarm started and didn't clear till the new battery was installed. What can I do to prevent the alarm while swapping the battery?
You made a mistake in reassembly! You ALWAYS remove the negative first (which you did) but you always connect it LAST! That keeps the electrical reference to the frame isolated as you attach the positive connections!
Remove Negative First, then positive Put positive back on first, then negative. But, as long as you don't touch the frame with terminals etc you can do it either way. The above is the safest way.

Thanks for the great video. I am puzzled by the order of reconnecting the terminals. Did you really mean to go with the negative first? I was taught to do this last. Please clarify. Thanks again for the video! (New subscriber.)

Turn your ignition on, then disconnect the battery. I'm trying to figure out how to store mine without the battery In it but I don't want to leave the key in it either.
Glad you liked the video! We recommend that for many. Once you're experienced and you're not worried about grounding out on the frame you can quickly do it either way. If your not comfortable yet here is the order you should do it. Remove Negative First, then positive. Put positive back on first, then negative.
If you turn the ignition on, wait for the alarm to disable then pull the main fuse out before you mess around with the battery. The alarm shouldnt go off then

Ride safe
Hey Ryan,
I've got an 07 Low Rider with a lithium ion battery... How do I disarm the security system to remove the battery for winter storage without leaving the ignition turned on?
Turn ignition wait for alarm to disarm then disconnect the negative battery terminal first then positive terminal.
Do I have to worry about the alarm system when removing the battery?
No, no issues.

Ryan,
Thank you for the 411!
My buddy reversed the polarity on the battery. Now bike cranks but no start. What happened. ? What can i check. 2014 Road King
Ryan Urlacher I have a shovelhead also😆. My terminals always came loose without loctite. I’m relatively new to twin cams
I changed my battery but my security alarm started and didn't clear till the new battery was installed. What can I do to prevent the alarm while swapping the battery?
Maybe take the master fuse out? Not sure
If you have an alarm system isn't there some procedure you have to follow before disconnecting the battery?
Nope
OK thanks.
You made a mistake in reassembly! You ALWAYS remove the negative first (which you did) but you always connect it LAST! That keeps the electrical reference to the frame isolated as you attach the positive connections!
Hay when i put the new battery in does it mater witch terminal i start with
Remove Negative First, then positive
Put positive back on first, then negative.
But, as long as you don't touch the frame with terminals etc you can do it either way. The above is the safest way.
@@RyanUrlacher thanks for the info ride safe brotha
Awesome video is the lithium battery smaller than the lead acid battery? Dimensions height and length?
Already did video here ==> ua-cam.com/video/yDgUPSTYYL8/v-deo.html
Ryan Urlacher oh yes I forgot about that one. sorry
What up Ryan, huge fan my brother do you have any videos on how to add lights & other accessories to the Harley Ultra Classic? I certainly want to be contributor to your channel.
Here is what we have so far: www.lawabidingbiker.com/harleyrearledlights/
We're working with Custom Dynamics on some of their new products. Videos will be out soon.
which one's the main fuse?
It is the biggest one. Larger than the others, it will stick out to you.

Thanx mucho!
Thanks for a great video!!!
I changed my battery but the seat can't fit it like before I don't know why!?
Thanks for the great video. I am puzzled by the order of reconnecting the terminals. Did you really mean to go with the negative first? I was taught to do this last. Please clarify. Thanks again for the video! (New subscriber.)
Matthew Dell, you are correct. He reconnected it in the wrong order. Negative should be first to unhook and last when hooking back up.
Is that a stock seat?
Nope. www.lawabidingbiker.com/harleyhammock
you always instal the positive side first then the negative my friend.
You should if you’re worried about touching the frame or something for sure. Other than that it doesn’t matter. Done it hundreds of times. Thx for watching.
My alarm goes off when disconnecting the wires, why was this step omitted
Do you have a stock HD security system? We do and our alarm does not go off.

Turn your ignition on, then disconnect the battery.
I'm trying to figure out how to store mine without the battery In it but I don't want to leave the key in it either.
Ryan Urlacher yes, 2017 stock alarm. Apparently it’s a new feature, I turned ignition on and pulled main fuse after that I could disconnect battery.
which one is the main fuse?@@AlastairT00
I have a 2017 model, so its the big red fuse on the left hand side (jiffy stand side) of the bike behind the plastic cover @@jibboom2112
👍👍
Thank you!
That tongue on the front of the tray is a major pain! I cut mine out....much easier to remove & reinstall now...👍
Negative first negative last..
Glad you liked the video! We recommend that for many. Once you're experienced and you're not worried about grounding out on the frame you can quickly do it either way. If your not comfortable yet here is the order you should do it. Remove Negative First, then positive. Put positive back on first, then negative.
I did not hear anything about the alarm going off its tits when you lift the battery, even with the fob being on the bike.
If you turn the ignition on, wait for the alarm to disable then pull the main fuse out before you mess around with the battery. The alarm shouldnt go off then
