  • Q&A with Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, and Eddie Izzard of VICTORIA AND ABDUL.
Academy Award winner Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) reunites with Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen), and returns to the role of Queen Victoria, in Victoria & Abdul.
The screenplay of Victoria & Abdul is by Academy Award nominee Lee Hall (Billy Elliot), based on journalist Shrabani Basu’s book Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant, which brought to light the long-hidden history of Victoria and Abdul from their own diaries and journals.
Victoria & Abdul tells the extraordinary true story of the amazing and unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young clerk, Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), who becomes her teacher, her spiritual advisor, and her devoted friend.
In 1887, Abdul travels from India to present a ceremonial medal as part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee but surprisingly finds favor with the elderly Queen. The unprecedented and unlikely relationship causes a battle royale within the royal household, pitting the Queen against court and family. Victoria & Abdul humorously explores questions of race, religion, power, and the farce of Empire through the prism of a highly unusual and deeply moving friendship.

Judi and Eddies performance was excellent, Alis acting was a bit superficial maybe that was the directors aim?

When Ali Fazal reached for the bottle of water and open it for Judi Dench,.... I respect and love this man even more.

Victoria & Abdul is an incredibly moving experience. I loved it so much that I just didn’t want it to end. The entire cast was superb, especially Ali Fazal & Dame Judy Dench! I love all of her performances, but this may be my absolute favorite. They both pulled me into their lives & I was so happy...and so delighted to see that lovable side of Queen Victoria...The movie was fabulous, but it made me terribly sad to see their love story end. Mr Fazal was handsome & so very comforting to look upon.
I had wished to see Bertie keep Abdul & learn to love & appreciate his wisdom just as his mother had. I have to say, that after the Queen’s death, the manner in which the family treated Abdul & his family ...came as no surprise. I have little respect for the leeches & hangers on that are the extended royal family.
They aren’t much different today than they were in Victoria’s time.

Did Ali Fazal refer to traveling sickness as 'Delhi Belly'?

Delhi Belly is what the British get the first time they go to India aka Really Really bad Diarrhoea.

Movie people and those that surround them think they are so clever and that everyone with waiting with baited breath. They really are at times rather superficial and annoying. Of course I think Judi Dench is a peach of an actress though.
