I am proud how far these guys have come since lords of the fallen. You can tell this game is a labor of love. So many of the things that pissed me off about the first game were fixed or improved. The jump in quality between lotf and surge 1 was a leap and surge 2 was a larger one. The one they make after this will probably be able to stand toe to toe with dark souls instead of just living in its shadow.

My son and I enjoyed watching this particular review. UA-cam itself may be forcing content-creators to dance to a different tune in order to find financial viability, but it doesn't seem to have affected your stride (or your sharp delivery for that matter.) This was a fence game for me, though my son was more convinced. After watching this review, he's sold; and frankly, so am I. I sit at the med bay laughing singing the song all the time because of the way the singer says more as " mo" I've finally turned the music off because I would just laugh and couldnt focus on what I was doing.
Anybody else find the setting and world to be painfully generic and boring in Surge 1 and 2? I like alot about Surge but I just can't love these games and get connected to the worlds because they feel so boring and unimaginative. I can live in any Soulsborne game and nothing better than your first time exploring wondering what is next and it never dissapoints in every aspect but I have no desire to come back to the worlds of Surge. I wish they would go way more sci fi and less generic and industrial. We need more variety in everything from environments to enemies to weapons and gear. I even enjoyed Lords of the Fallens world far more than Surge. Although LotF was fairly generic in the setting too it still was funner to be in than Surge. I wanna love Surge and I can if they get more imaginative with the world of Surge.
Yeah, having been playing it after being a huge fan of the original, it feels very different tonally. In the late game things become more like the original which is a lot of fun, but it is still sad to not have the same vibe.

Lucas Au-Yeung-Rivest I never played the first one but I picked this up yesterday and played for 6 hours lol. For me that’s quite a bit of time to put into a single player game in just one day. I’d definitely recommend.

The first Surge opened me up to this type of precise, challenging melee game. I played Dark Souls before but didn't have the patience. I could handle the Surge though, and I fell in love with it. Then I went on to play Bloodborne and Dark Souls and had a blast with the skills I got from the Surge. I can't wait to play the second one. It looks just as addicting as the first.
I tried out The Surge in its early days, and while I wasn't a fan of the core souls-like gameplay (I'm too casual for that), I still appreciated the game. Even though I don't have any desire to play The Surge 2, I love your reviews no matter what game it is. You're a damn good reviewer, and a hilarious one at that. Keep it up mate.
I've been so hyped about this game, LOVED the first one and the sequel has looked to be a huge improvement. I'm kinda surprised you didn't even mention the addition of the new multiplayer-lite elements through graffiti to leave messages to other players, finding dead players and looting their corpses, revenge enemies that are more powerful and can be killed for greater reward to avenge the death of another player, and placing banners as a little scavenger hunt for other players that rewards you more the longer it takes someone to find it and rewards the player who finds it though I'm guessing there probably wasn't much of that stuff before offical release.
I already know I'm buying this game when it comes out. But I love watching your reviews so here we are. I loved the first game and the combat system so I'm glad to see they haven't changed much (if it's not broken don't fix it).
Performance issues in difficult games have always been a major factor in deciding to buy it or not. Thank you for talking about it, I will wait for this game to be on a sale before I buy it, devs might fix some of the issues by then.
You should try code vein because even demodcracy the guy who does list for hardest soulborne twice bosses easiest to hardest even said one of code vein's bosses was the hardest bosses he fought
@@galaxyvulture6649 he said that it was if you didnt use the partner system, which is stupid because you just sit in a corner while your op teamate slaughters the boss. Its clear to me they threw that in last second when they realized the game was ridiculously hard and needed it to be fair.
@@strangegreenthing I just wish they never made the partner system since it was so dumb. Like the only thing they should do is make less enemies to bosses since the enemy spam is real. I just really loved how the game incentives you to play more aggressive so you dont run out of heal and just die.

its weird how we detract points from this game for things that nobody complains about in the Dark Souls games, like the lack of maps, or the enemies only grunting.
I like the lack of a map. With regards to the grunting, it makes sense in dark souls as everyone had lost their mind. That doesn't hold true in the surge (afaik).

it does show that a souls-like genre doesnt simply let player's expect outcome where you always play the upper hand, so you dont play reckless and go for a safe route.
I enjoyed the genre created by the souls series but never a fan of demons, grotesque and scary stuff which dominated the genre for a time. Then the surge1 came up years back and quickly satisfied my interest in souls like mechanics splashed with my favorite sci-fi stuff. Can't wait to get my hands on this sequel! thanks for the awesome review as always ACG!

Was not even considering picking this up since I always thought the concept of the first surge was somewhat lackluster for me. Now I’m a little bit intrigued by this game. My question would be: If you enjoyed the first one's combat and setting, but found it too difficult to bother trying to finish, is this one worth picking up?
Do you want the answer as to why the beginning levels are unsatisfying in games nowadays? There is a good reason. Has to do with minimizing refunds. Steam is the leading distributor for games and offers refunds if you have less than 2 hrs play. Devs have caught on that if a game doesnt play well it will get refunded so now they make sure that the beginning hours run smoothly at the expense of technical prowess. Before steam it was typical to see the beginning of games shine to show off the eye candy. :)
First of all "because youtube now is basically screwed" best part of review. lol. Huge Demon/Dark Souls, Sekiro, Nioh, Bloodborne genre and I loved the first Surge so I'm sure I'm gonna buy this day 1. The first Surge had its problems, but combat was solid imo.

I can't decide which one to play first! I have them both on pre order I just don't know where to start. I loved the surge, but anime souls sounds like an absolute blast!
Surge 1 was really good but the last 20% of the game was mostly unfair. You were killed with 1-2 punches from most enemies and their positioning was really bad. I hope they fixed this late game problem in this one.
I figured they’d dial back the story. Shane. The first game was no Kojima title but it’s souls-like ambiguous narrative was decent. I can appreciate the focus on gameplay and level design. Solid review
The original The Surge was an ambitious title that had it's share of issues. Having said that, I'm glad that The Surge 2 has done a decent job of improving upon it's predecessor. As expected, the game is very challenging. The combat is visceral and brutal. However, the lack of an in game map is perplexing. There are some bugs, crashes and performance issues unfortunately. Otherwise, thanks once again Karak. I really appreciate it!
So The Surge 1, wait for sale. Surge 2, BUY. Yass! Loved the first one even though it was wait for sale grade. Imagine the fun time you'll get with this one.
Parrying ?! No time for that jazz hit and run tactics are way more efficient... I use fists class weapons so it's block ,quick series of punches with good enoght slam, and damage
Man, what a we'll put together review. I really have a sense of the game after your reviews and I like how much of them you cover. Graphics are really important to a game in my opinion and it doesn't just mean how pretty it is, but how cohesive the experience is because of them. And I like how you deep dive into the mechanics, music, and voice work but still leave enough there as to not spoil everything. It really gives a clear picture and enough information to make a purchasing decision even if someone were to disagree completely with all your points. Thank you again!

I enjoyed the Surge 1 much like I enjoyed bits of being with my ex. At times it was fun, sometimes really good looking. But fundamentally, too much time with it, makes you want to peel your own foreskin off because it's just so damn frustrating. This looks great, but I know if I get it on the Pro or X, it's going too cost me about £355. That's the price of the game digitally, and the controllers I'll break in frustration at being so crap, throwing them at the cats 😞. I admire those people that can stick to these games and complete them! I have great patience in life, I mean I have a fucking 15yr old daughter who thinks she's going on 21! But these games are just so unforgiving! Amazing, but ONE MISTAKE and bang, back to square one. Great review again, and the game looks good. But this numpty will frustratingly stick to ARMA and BF, while the intelligent, patient fuckers play this.
I gotta say you upped your word game. Especially the first minute was a real joy to listen to. I rarely like any videos, i have probably never liked any of yours but that opening was so satisfying i dropped a like immediately and came here to congratulate you on improving. Keep it up.
The first game had an odd feel to it at first, but by the time I finished it I enjoyed it enough to get all the achievements for the base game at the time, so hopefully this one is even better.
It seems as though most original or imaginative games are created within the range of indie, to AA devs. AAA has had any real talent buried beneath a landslide of greed.
AAA devs work for the giants and have no choice on what they make and how it will take them AA devs have some freedom but if they do to well they will become shills for the Machine Indie devs are being threaten with changes to the online market as seen in France. This could lead to their demise. It is really a shame that gaming had to blow up into this massive industry that feeds on addictions and greed, when it use to be such a cult hobby that people actually were once consider outcast if they liked video games and were very elusive to the overall issues of the world.
@@Coco-vv8nf I agree. When the suits take over artistic creativity and unique game design go out the window. Once you become aware of it scrutinizing for rough AA gems becomes a mini game in itself.
Thanks for the video. Sounds like it's right up my alley. I intended to get this day one, but I forgot when it was coming out, now I have to wait a couple weeks. Maybe performance will be spot on by time I get ahold of it! :-) And for me, a lack of map, not only not a problem, but kinda welcome not to have it. Then again I'm an old school gamer, used to map on paper while playing games like Eye of the beholder. *laugh*

I totally forgot about this game, I'll have to get Ghost Recon and Ourterworlds first though.
This channel really has become my go to for reviews after several "Buy" reccs in a row lead me to some of my favorite games this year, so I think I might jump on this after I grab my tips tomorrow. (speaking of tips: if you're a Humble Subscriber Surge 2 is like 17% off, bringing it down to like 41 bucks before tax, just for anyone hesitating a little like myself)
My question would be: If you enjoyed the first one's combat and setting, but found it too difficult to bother trying to finish, is this one worth picking up?
The first game didn't even have real difficulty, it was artificial difficulty nonsense.
Do you want the answer as to why the beginning levels are unsatisfying in games nowadays? There is a good reason. Has to do with minimizing refunds. Steam is the leading distributor for games and offers refunds if you have less than 2 hrs play. Devs have caught on that if a game doesnt play well it will get refunded so now they make sure that the beginning hours run smoothly at the expense of technical prowess. Before steam it was typical to see the beginning of games shine to show off the eye candy. :)

First of all "because youtube now is basically screwed" best part of review. lol. Huge Demon/Dark Souls, Sekiro, Nioh, Bloodborne genre and I loved the first Surge so I'm sure I'm gonna buy this day 1. The first Surge had its problems, but combat was solid imo.

i'm glad it turned out the way it did, I liked LotF - despite its flaws, and The Surge 1. Maybe a few patches down the line to fix it up

I can't decide which one to play first! I have them both on pre order I just don't know where to start. I loved the surge, but anime souls sounds like an absolute blast!
Surge 1 was really good but the last 20% of the game was mostly unfair. You were killed with 1-2 punches from most enemies and their positioning was really bad. I hope they fixed this late game problem in this one.

I figured they’d dial back the story. Shane. The first game was no Kojima title but it’s souls-like ambiguous narrative was decent.

The original The Surge was an ambitious title that had it's share of issues. Having said that, I'm glad that The Surge 2 has done a decent job of improving upon it's predecessor. As expected, the game is very challenging. The combat is visceral and brutal. However, the lack of an in game map is perplexing. There are some bugs, crashes and performance issues unfortunately. Otherwise, thanks once again Karak. I really appreciate it!
So The Surge 1, wait for sale. Surge 2, BUY. Yass! Loved the first one even though it was wait for sale grade. Imagine the fun time you'll get with this one.

Parrying ?! No time for that jazz hit and run tactics are way more efficient... I use fists class weapons so it's block ,quick series of punches with good enoght slam, and damage
The combos fill energy meter, energy meter powers implants element, was the best part of 1.

Man, what a we'll put together review. I really have a sense of the game after your reviews and I like how much of them you cover. Graphics are really important to a game in my opinion and it doesn't just mean how pretty it is, but how cohesive the experience is because of them. And I like how you deep dive into the mechanics, music, and voice work but still leave enough there as to not spoil everything. It really gives a clear picture and enough information to make a purchasing decision even if someone were to disagree completely with all your points. Thank you again!
I enjoyed the Surge 1 much like I enjoyed bits of being with my ex.
At times it was fun, sometimes really good looking.
But fundamentally, too much time with it, makes you want to peel your own foreskin off because it's just so damn frustrating.
This looks great, but I know if I get it on the Pro or X, it's going too cost me about £355.
That's the price of the game digitally, and the controllers I'll break in frustration at being so crap, throwing them at the cats 😞.
I admire those people that can stick to these games and complete them! I have great patience in life, I mean I have a fucking 15yr old daughter who thinks she's going on 21! But these games are just so unforgiving! Amazing, but ONE MISTAKE and bang, back to square one.

But this numpty will frustratingly stick to ARMA and BF, while the intelligent, patient fuckers play this.

The first game had an odd feel to it at first, but by the time I finished it I enjoyed it enough to get all the achievements for the base game at the time, so hopefully this one is even better.

It seems as though most original or imaginative games are created within the range of indie, to AA devs. AAA has had any real talent buried beneath a landslide of greed.
AAA devs work for the giants and have no choice on what they make and how it will take them
AA devs have some freedom but if they do to well they will become shills for the Machine
Indie devs are being threaten with changes to the online market as seen in France. This could lead to their demise.
It is really a shame that gaming had to blow up into this massive industry that feeds on addictions and greed, when it use to be such a cult hobby that people actually were once consider outcast if they liked video games and were very elusive to the overall issues of the world.
@@Coco-vv8nf I agree. When the suits take over artistic creativity and unique game design go out the window. Once you become aware of it scrutinizing for rough AA gems becomes a mini game in itself.

To bad about performance, the first game worked really well on ps4 pro. Both the native 4k mode and the 60fps one.
It even runs well on vanilla XBone, which is what I play it on. It's a really beautiful game and the load times after deaths are super brief.

And for me, a lack of map, not only not a problem, but kinda welcome not to have it. Then again I'm an old school gamer, used to map on paper while playing games like Eye of the beholder. *laugh*
