Addendum for all the TLDW commenters who are claiming that I think this show is perfect: I say many times during the video that the show has some pretty glaring flaws. The "golden standard" I'm referring to in the title comes completely down to the time and genuine effort that was put into this show vs others being released nowadays. THAT is what every show should strive for, even if the final product isn't perfect.
All the "If this is the golden standard, then the state of television is horrible" declarations, YES. The state of television IS horrible, and Hazbin was a gem compared to most current media in my personal opinion. Precisely the point of this video.
Hazbin Hotel has a very vocal hatedom that comes out of the woodwork every time someone says even something slightly positive about the show. These people know you don’t think it’s perfect, they’re just mad you like it and are putting words in your mouth. Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t let them get you down, they’re not coming from a place of good faith.

2023 was full of animation masterpieces: Blue Eyed Samurai, Scavenger's Reign, Pantheon S2 Carol at the End of the World, Fired on Mars, and dare I include Disney's Kiff, which for a general audoences show, has tight writing and comedic timing on par with Smiling Friends. All these shows are nearly perfect at what they do and have little to critisize, so the statement about "golden standards" doesn't appear particularly informed.
Immediately when you said "you wanna know who my favorite character is", I _knew_ it was Lucifer for all the same reasons that he's my favorite character. Lucifer, Satan himself, being depicted as a depresso expresso short king dad who's socially awkward and has a weird obsession with rubber ducks is such a genius thing and I love that he actively beefs with Alastor. The "fuck you" bit is legendary
Actually, in the show, Satan is actually a completely separate character from Lucifer! Just a lesser known fact.

9 Realms feels like all of it was made in a weekend by people who were just trying to get it done, Hazbin feels like it took years with people that truly cared and loved it as much as the fans do

I've been a fan of Hazbin and Hella Boss since saw the pilots. They have so many details that incurage reawtching or just pausing at times to see what's in the background and want to sing along with the songs.
Sometimes you *need* to pause to look at random shit otherwise you can be confused later
this is going to be possibly inarticulate because im post wisdom tooth removal rn and watching analysis to distract from the pain, but as a writer, thank you so so much for putting this into words. hazbin hotel is IMPORTANT for writers. it may not be perfect, but goddamn, it is a near-insane display of hard work, effort, passion, and sheer skill for the writers to have been able to pull off so much with so little. people complain so much about the pacing, but to put things into perspective: hazbin hotel's total length is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes long, only slightly longer than the average feature length film, and SHORTER than the average avatar movie. it packs so much depth in such little time, a true testament of quality over quantity, and not only that, it is clearly AWARE of how this time constraint makes it weaker. it balances out any lack of development by mixing serious and intriguing characterization, dynamics, and themes WITH a tone that breaks you out of judgmental media pessimism and into "hazbin hotel is so fun that small flaws aren't a big deal to my enjoyment!" it masters tone so well that it forces the audience to level with its circumstances, take its flaws with a grain of salt, and even come to enjoy them. which, oh my god, is so insanely difficult. that level of writing is the PINNACLE. it's about as close to perfect that hazbin hotel could get.
I'd also add that Hazbin Hotel presents a very important lesson for writers/creators on media literacy and audience lack thereof. Hazbin Hotel is far from perfect, but I'm absolutely _baffled_ by the sheer amount of criticism that's based in blatant and very avoidable misinterpretation, baseless speculation, or overgeneralization. Episode 7 has an entire musical number called You Didn't Know yet some people _still_ somehow assume Heaven itself is the "bad guy," like the show hasn't been building themes of "nothing is black and white" and "all beings are flawed and nuanced."
Watching this play out has been a stark reminder of how incredibly difficult the balance between showing vs telling and exposition vs overexplaining really is. Finding that sweet spot between respecting your audience's intelligence and spelling things out is already one of the _hardest_ parts of storytelling, so seeing multi-point criticisms based on things that _are_ explicitly or clearly laid out has got to be both crushing and mind-bogglingly frustrating. Because how can improve and address flaws if you're wasting time sorting out what's legit and what isn't to the point that you start second-guessing yourself?
That is NOT a good example of quality over quantity. One of the main criticisms is that the story is very rushed especially at the end and people say that it had too many ideas and mashed them together too tight when it could've took its time like other organized popular shows. Gravity falls only had two seasons and it was able to neatly spread its ideas and lore trivia even in filler episodes (which could still be skipped) despite having few "lore" episodes.
Toast couldn't defeat his enemy, the door, so he found a new challenger.

I never expected to get a Hazbin video from you!! I don’t really have anything to add besides the fact that I agree with all your points, and I hope we get more shows like this in the future. I miss when there was passion put into projects instead of just corporate mandated slop made to appeal to the blandest demographics.
I would also like to say that if you ever did make a more spoiler-y review of the show talking about your opinions on the plot/characters, I would definitely watch it!!!

I mean I wouldn’t go so far as to say “Gold Standard”. The pacing is way too fast & it leads to the plot feeling really rushed, but there was still a lot to love here. It’s a solid series.
I’d say a recent example of a TRUE “Gold Standard” in the world of American TV Animation is “Scavengers Reign” on Max. No pacing or plot problems there, and the characters/world are just as if not MORE interesting than Hazbin.

If you are looking for something else to watch during the gap between now and whenever season 2 releases. I really do recommend catching up on helluva boss, it builds upon the hazbin univers greatly and they are realising more episodes still during the gaps in hazbin releases.
I don’t have enough time to watch every thing from everyone I’m subscribed to and also go about my existence IRL and *also* play video games, but today I choose to watch this video by you on something I love. I’ve agreed with most of what you said, especially about the pacing on how quickly Charlie and Vaggie resolved their personal conflict.
I would argue that Hazbin Hotel was not a shot in the dark:
1) Hell and Heaven related shows have always been fairly popular - I mean, Supernatural, Lucifer, etc.
2) Furries were a thing for a lot longer than Hazbin.
3) lgbtqia+ community is a thing.
4) HH, I believe had preceding comics and the creator was known for smaller works before then. Albeit pretty much only on the internet.
I mean, I get what you were getting at, but also, like, I think it's pretty obvious that if you create a pilot whose side character ends up becoming a tumblr sexyman before the you even put out the actual show... there's a not so small chance the show is at least going to be seen by a lot of people, even if a lot of people won't necessarily love, or even like the show. (Mostly very religious people, but also people who can't quite seem to put out a positive or neutral review for anything without either struggling immensely or reviewing and insanely safe piece of media, of the likes of Breaking Bad or something that won't offer pushback anyway.)
The dads tend to be deadbeat, the moms tend to just be dead.
Also, as you can see from the comments, no, the internet isn't overwhelming positive and if you googled Hazbin Hotel reviews or Hazbin Hotel analysis, that negativity - that is in very bold writing so as to sell - really comes to the surface. And sure, I agree Hazbin isn't perfect... but it's better than a lot of what we're getting, and it's something new, finally. Not just Family Guy, The Simpsons and South Park for the xth season. Or something like Velma, which doesn't deserve to exist, but alas, here we our. This is our personal hell.
I do love Lucifer, Husk, Angel, Carmilla, Lute, Adam, Pentious, Alastor and Zestial though.

BUT, I do agree with just about everything you said. Passion is everything. Drive to craft the best story possible, to keep pushing, that is important. Audiences feel that passion and respond positively to it.
And that's why Hazbin has... Such a following I think.

Idk if the show that's had multiple controversies about racist writing, inappropriately using Voodoo symbols, makes a mockery of sa via SA jokes while simultaneously trying to act like they care so so much because of Angel's storyline. except one of the people who worked on the Poison music video and scene is openly a Val/Angel shipper and calls them his "R word Ship" and Vivziepop is well aware of that and hired them anyway. She undermines the severity of what her story is portraying and has the nerve to equate an actual literally SA predator in her show to the Dumb Girl plastic from Mean Girls. She's victim shamed SA survivors on Twitter and has created an environment full of SA apologists and men like Val are woobified with her blatant encouragement.
Idk if that should be the standard, studios should take notes on what not to do. She's also been repeatedly exposed for being very transphobic, abusive towards her crew, and she had a whole ass playlist on here full of SA scenes. Its beyond me how so many people can just ignore everything wrong with this show and Vivziepop.

This show has really been a breath of fresh air. Especially with how bad a lot of recent musicals (especially the animated ones) have been. It of course has some plot (and some world building) issues, but it's overall fantastic.

16:23 So I wanted to say this as someone who watched the pilot a music video was made that I think is kinda cannon called addict and it kinda displayed the way angel was. And showed what episode 4 showed I can’t say more without spoiling but to say the least angel was shown to be like this before the shows official release just in a music video though.

As someone who has been with hazbin and helluva from the pilot release, I’d be willing to wait another 4 years to make another season as well made as this one
You say big studios would not dream of greenlighting an "animated adult raunchy comedy musical play on religious tales" and I would say they are missing out. It feels like there's a decent sized market there especially with the artstyle. (I love the very oc nature of the character designs and it just appeals to my inner cringey child but its adult) The children who grew up watching fantasy stylish cartoons (Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, ATLA, Adventure Time, The Owl House etc.) and still want to watch cartoons that appeal to their artsy side (So not like some other animated adult comedies)
I started watching this because a steamer I watch could not stop singing Hell’s Greatest Dad.
Hazbin Hotel is a very odd piece of media for me, because even though i agree with almost every critic about that i saw on the internet, i cant help but few really intrigued and expectant about the story, even if you dont like you cant deny that this is special

Well put on how a problem is only as bad as you see it as, for me the too fast pacing and sometimes poor writing didn't bother me too much aside from the Chaggie issues resolution
And yes the songs are outright Bangers, with my favorite being Stayed Gone, Vox and Al's dynamic is a ton of fun for me to watch
This video is more you explaining why Hazbin is successful, in terms of its online relevancy/presence rather than going into the contents of the show itself. In terms of the show itself Hazbin is far from being the “gold standard of television”. Considering how you analyzed/reviewed/criticized The Nine Realms so heavily I wouldn’t have expected you to “look past the problems” with Hazbin. I know this isn’t a review of the show but I can tell you’re enthusiastic and have a lot of positive things to say about it. It’s cool that you really like Hazbin Hotel but as a viewer of you I’m kinda put off watching you fangirl about why it’s so great and how you can “look past the problems you have with it” while simultaneously tear open every single episode of The Nine Realms. Not trying to be a hater or anything, but if you do end up reviewing Hazbin Hotel I hope that you have that same standard you do with the Nine Realms as well as explain why you’re able to look past Hazbin Hotel’s flaws
Normally I don't give shows with lots of very clear flaws but this one has way to much stuff I like to just not see it. (also I've waited for it for like 4 years...)

I think this show is helped alot by being a musical and that aspect being used to its full potential and efficiency, like srsly the rushed pacing of the show would have felt so much worse without it.
These songs do great in both conveying what a character is feeling but also moving the plot forward and giving exposition.
"show, don't tell" as a rule is allowed to be stretched a bit with the use of musical theatre, turning the telling into something visually engaging, yanno?
Like so many of the songs are just straight up conversations, dialectics, which is p much the standard when it comes to stage musicals but is something I feel has been depleting in animated media recently (particularly disney)

Even with the show having its issues, (such as poor pacing and rushed story) the fact of the matter is that it’s a show with HEART and LOVE put into it is WHY everyone loves the show. It’s a show that did its best with what it had, and it wasn’t soulless or barren (like Wish, The Nine Realms, and the recent seasons/chapters of Boku No Hero Academia). I hope studios take notes, because prime is surprisingly doing fantastic, with media like The Boys, God Omens, and Hazbin Hotel!
