    Pleased to see a 'destruction of sorts from abuses' to a practical restoration on available and affordable tooling like the WorkSharp KO. Nice work and informative presentation. I feel it's great that you are supporting the DBK guys and also your production sales with obviously great customer services exhibited in this video!

    When you are grinding flat surfaces, like the spine, use the opposite side of the machine. There is a flat spot designed for this. I have used the jockey wheels on mine, like you did and it will damage them as they are plastic. This will throw the belt out of alignement. Its also near imposible to make it perfectly flat. Both the blade grinder and the regular attachment has a flat spot that can be used for this.

  • @harkonen1000000

    For reference, VG-10 steel should hold the heat treat up to 450°C according to manufacturer (for bake-on coatings), so no worries there, you'd *see* the temperature long before it became an issue.

    I think that you are touching various steel materials. Do you think VG 10 steel is suitable for survival knife? Also, what kind of steel do you think is suitable for survival knife steel? What do you think of carbon steel like 1095?

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  7 років тому +4

      We really like 3V-steel. As do the girls at DBK. Check out their videos on 3V. 1095 is excellent when you know its purpose and understand the advantages and disadvantages that it brings. Easy to sharpen, will not break, but will not hold an edge for a very long time.

    3:45 lol I love when people try saying the temper on a blade was ruined from getting too hot. you have to get metal super hot to ruin the heat treating. I would do the same thing as people love to make up shit like that.

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  6 років тому +1

      Tempering usually happens at 180-220 degrees Celsius, for usually an hour or two, or more. That's why we also feel that is grossly overthought.

    Hey Chris you have to be a saint working with those guys over at Dutch Bushcraft Knives . However, in all seriousness I could not think of better people to work with they take the boring out of blade reviews, know their stuff and for promote well, people see this and the masses are following them . I am hoping they end up getting elected as the European Joint Presidents then we might just get a little sense and fun back into our lives. A really informative, impressive and inspirational upload on re-profiling that blade by the way Chris ♠️ 👌 i can't think how on earth that could of happened as DBK take such care of their kit 😂

  • @hugofeynman

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  5 років тому +3

      We did say something about that :) That's why Chris didn't go beyond what his fingers could handle heat wise, and he did cool in water inbetween.

  • @randallwilliams9663
    @randallwilliams9663 4 роки тому

    Take it to a bench grinder and then to a real 2 or 4 in belt sander. That thing is tiny and takes longer. Since that tiny belt sander at cabelas and thought it look cheap. And it cost almost as much as a professional one. Great work!

    I would have profiled the shape first. Then worry about the bevel angle. You extended the original 3mm cutting surface to almost a centimeter...which weakens the knife cutting edge and risks blade chipping.

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  5 років тому +1

      We actually made sure to change the angle on the Work Sharp accordingly. Knife is stronger than ever before like this!

      @@knivesandtools i have the worksharp ken onion myself , purchased from u guys , dont use it much tough but last week i got an A1 from a friend with which he batonned through cow meat and bones it performed great but u can already imagine the edge , i restored it with the sandpaper method not on a mousemat but on a leatherstrop took me couple of hours but is again razorsharp . Yesterday i ordered at knivesandtools the tool grinding add on together with a set xtra belts and maybe its gonna safe me some time in the future when i am asked to sharpen a knife . Anyway in the standard setup off the ken onion worksharp it just doesn' t work for me. . 👍great company with excellent service .

    When you ground that much to reshape the tip, you went past the VG10 lamination line and into the soft 420J2 outer layers. Better than no tip at all but nowhere near as good as before it broke off. The F1 has excellent edge/blade geometry in it's original form.

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  5 років тому +2

      It's still a rough fix of course, but by grinding away the 420J2, we expose more of the VG10 core so its still there.

    Fallkniven knives are so brittle there is no point in fixing them. By far the best thing you can do after you made the mistake of buying them is to sell them. Preferably before you lose the tip (which is only a matter of time with these knives). Don't make the mistake I've done: First time I lost the tip on my S1 I had it restored, second time I lost it I restored it but again made the mistake and kept it and so one day I lost it again. It's only now that I've learnt the lesson and I'm going to sell it but hey - you don't have to wait for so long.

    • @knivesandtools
      @knivesandtools  7 років тому +1

      How thin did you restore the tip to?

    • @branislavboba1699
      @branislavboba1699 7 років тому +1

      As thin/thick as the original. Which means it was and still is rather thick. Just as the original. People tend to try to find the cause of the problem in all sorts of other areas but the truth about it is really very simple: The sandwich idea all seems very nice but in reality it does not work. It's all very nice to have an extremely durable core but that does not protrude all the way to the edge. Which is made out of extremely brittle steel. (Have a look at A1 destruction video and you will notice that however long lasting the core may be you lose the edge right at the beginning.) For this simple reason you will lose the tip all the time. Unless one accepts the reality and sell it as quickly as possible. To let some other Fallkniven believer open their eyes as well.

      We do like the Ken Onion version much better than the original one indeed. We did all of this on this Work Sharp Ken Onion, with just a few strops to finish it off. Did take a lot of time, but it was well worth it.

    Vg10 stinks. I would never buy the F1. If I got one as a gift, id sell it n get something else. I know peo who dont beat up their knives n their F1s have broken. Cool that you fixed it for them, it would prob cost all of us almost as much as the cost of the knife to get it fixed...not worth it to me. But love your work; it came out really nice. Peace.

    you forgot the screw that keeps the belt on.
    also the flat spot behind where you are sharpening is for flattening the spine.
    and that knife could be sharper. it ripped a little trough the paper. i make my knifes cut baking paper easy of the blade grinding attachment.
    if you are gonna make a video make it correct and show the proper use of the machine.
    the belts should not be used with water also since the machine aint waterproof and the system can take damage from it. ive asked work sharp of this myself.

      Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate the time you took to comment!
      The knife did cut through the paper, point taken that it might have been a bit sharper. But the point of the video was the restoration of the point, which I think we were able to get across.
      We did not use too much water near the machine. The one slomo shot was an exception to get that nice footage ;) We completely agree that the machine isnt fit to use with water.
