FitCamX Front and Rear Dash Camera install! Polestar 2 and probably Volvo XC40 too...

  • *Note: I did not install the 12v fuse box wiring harness which supports parking mode. This wasn’t an important feature for me, but I may add it in the future.*
    This camera installation is incredibly easy but I went looking for a video to help me route the rear camera cable and couldn't find any, so I decided to film mine.
    Unfortunately this was a bit off the cuff. I didn't have an extra set of hands or a tripod for my phone so most of the shots are AFTER completing a step, but hopefully it's easy enough to follow.

    If you install the rear camera in PS2, check to see if your FM radio is functioning properly afterward. Mine was all static and pulsing, Others have apparently experienced same issue. I contacted Fitcam support. They responded promptly and said there is a newer version of the rear camera which fixes the problem. I already received the tracking number for the replacement.

      Good tip, thank you. I don't use the FM radio much at all but I'll test this out.

      I verified that indeed my FM reception was poor. I contacted FitCamX about this issue and they confirmed that there was an updated version of the rear camera. Not sure exactly what part of the old camera was causing the interference. The new camera doesn't look as nice but it works well and no longer interferes with the FM reception. Thanks again @panamera for the tip!

    I want to say thank you for the superlative instructions and the great detail that you shared in this video. I just took the plunge and installed the dashcam last night on my MY2024. Your guidance worked perfectly. I especially appreciated your observation about tying down the remainder of the rear camera wire so that it can't interfere with the rear seatbelt assembly. That never would have occurred to me. Thank you again!!

    Thank you really much for your video!
    I made the FitCamX installation in my PS2 MY2024 exactly like you did - and it worked really great!
    The only trouble I had was when using a fish tape that got stuck in the roof liner because it has an edge on the eyelet. It is therefore essential to cover this with insulation tape so that the fish tape can be pulled out again without any problems.

    You do not need to remove that larger part on the wind screen to install the cam. Only remove the small part behind the mirror. And DO NOT use a tool to remove the plug - just use your fingers reduces the risk of damaging the connector.

    Nice install video. I know from past experience that I would break at least of the clips. Also, with the blue remover tool, i will do something to put a scape mark line of the plastic. Lol
    The first time you installed the cams, how long did it take you to install and get it functioning?
    I'm wondering what a pro installer would charge.

    For the rubber boot I found heavy weed trimmer line worked well. Before pulling the cable though the boot, I wrapped it in electrical tape and covered that with wire pulling lubricant / wax. Made it pretty easy.
    Thanks again.

    Good video. I didn’t realise that whole rear corner pillar panel came off so I will redo my install and use that for the excess. I had originally stored the extra cable too near the radio unit in the hatch and it was causing the signal to be lost.

    Forgive me if this is a dumb question - but when pulling the front-to-rear cable through the headlining, how do you ensure it doesn't interfere with the curtain airbags?
    (That's kind of my fear, scared to mess with the safety systems!)

    • @ChuckG997
      @ChuckG997  11 місяців тому

      The curtain airbags are tucked rather nicely up into the frame. This makes pulling rather than pushing a much safer approach. But there is always a risk. Take care and don’t execute yourself if you aren’t comfortable.

      Do you mean the rubber boot? It’s not too bad, just squeeze it long ways at the base and work one side out then the other. Inside the rubber there is a plastic oval ring that keeps it in the metal hole, it’s fairly flexible. Don’t yank, just squeeze gently until you can get one side out of the lip and the rest will go easy.

    10:10 I would like to make you and any viewer aware of an issue that can be causes by your method of installation that could in worst case lead to serious injuries!
    You have not shown it in detail, but please be aware of the Airbags that are contained from the bottom of the A-pillar all the way over to the top of the B-pillar. By routing the cable to the top of the windshield you are effectively blocking this airbag from deploying properly. This can be dangerous in case of a side impact on the passenger side! I would recommend to remove the piece of trim on the A-pillar to route the cable behind the airbag. I'ts a bit of work, but safety should not be comprimised, right?

      There is a good video showing this for “FitCamX XC40 2019-2024.” They have you go down the A pillar, along the floor, up through C pillar and into the hatch. I haven’t confirmed the cable length works for us, but seems like there is just enough to do this way. Edit: plenty of cable length to run the cable this way.

    is there a technique for pulling out the grommets from the rear hatch? i'm assuming the rubber comes off the plastic, and the plastic u pry out afterwards? otherwise, my '23 V60 is the first volvo i've ever owned, and vs 20 years of toyotas, i'm shocked how easy it is to pry trim pieces and interior panels out. the grommets from body to rear hatch is the first thing that stumped me.

    • @ChuckG997
      @ChuckG997  Рік тому +1

      When you say grommet, do you mean the rubber wiring harness boot? If so, the plastic ring sits inside the end of the rubber tube, making it a rigid oval. That oval has a tab that clips into the sheet metal hole in the hatch. So the plastic ring and the rubber boot come out together by gently squeezing across the long axis of the oval, then prying one end out. Hopefully that makes sense. I tried to find a photo of it online but of course there are none.

    • @Cal94
      @Cal94 Рік тому

      @@ChuckG997 so i finally worked em free. the plastic rings on the V60 are black, they clip in both length and width wise, and i gave up trying to get it out all in one piece and managed to pry the rubber off first, then the plastic.

    Thank you for this video! Question: is the cable to the rear needed for power, communication with the front-facing camera or both?
    I ask because if someone has a car with power access (USB) near the rear window, could someone just use that and forgo stringing a cable thru the cabin?

    • @ChuckG997
      @ChuckG997  Рік тому +2

      You're welcome! The cable that comes integrated with the rear camera is a 4 pin connector that gets power from the main camera and also sends the signal back to the main unit for recording to the SD card. There's no recording ability built into the rear camera, so even if you found a way to break out the power independently, you'd still need to get the signal to the front. If for some reason you ONLY wanted a rear facing camera, with the capability to record, then I think you'd need a different product, and could probably find something much cheaper.
