It is good to finally hear intelligent conversations about sexuality, chastity,and freedom to become holy. My conversion to Catholicism coincided with the challenges of our early marriage years. Today is our 45th wedding anniversary. So many couples who used natural family planning have so much to offer about intimacy and chastity within marriage, but are never asked for their opinions. Especially about the greater emphasis on the development of the bond between man and woman as a lifelong friendship, shared coping with difficulties and celebration of achievements. Instead the only Catholic documents written by priests I read back in the 80s talked about providing for a spouse who was " genitally needy". It was effectively the genitalization and consumerization of Catholic teaching and it was very childish. It is especially good to hear a young woman and older married men speak. St John Paul II s theology of the body has not been read by a wide audience. Instead we have been dumbed down in our parishes in effect by priests who were struggling to understand the sexual revolution in society and coping with their own struggles. Post Vatican II priests are hopeless in the confessional because they have accepted the horizontal dimension of an appetite driven social norm. This is why they don't preach effectively about sexual morality and they are far too accepting of the rainbow agenda. So they become accommodating to the shallowness of society and never present any other vision. Priests of the 80s and 90s have become bishops and Popes of this time. Still clueless and struggling to cope with their own sexuality. More importantly, totally clueless about holiness and only to willing to " Be kind" if it suits them and practice deception and grovelling as necessary for advancing their own career. I gained much from this. My son is in a same-sex relationship, and he has literally said to me, "Maybe this is all there is for me." I've told him that he was made for so much more. Not sure if this is the right video to post this comment, but I find Gavin’s analysis of Jungian theory & philos. to be of major importance. I could write a book on how it has been used to make people think there is no sin, no right or wrong. Thanks for illuminating this & other pitfalls of being Catholic/Christian in today’s world. We really need to be careful about what we “let in.” I hope we hear more from CU or Gavin about how psychology can put us down the wrong path. There is a famous Catholic Jungian analyst who has written many books. Many of us followed her, but years ago I was taken aback by this one quote. “There is very little right/wrong or good/bad in this world. Thanks Kate, in my middle period I became a convinced Jungian, though, partly because I believe he provided an antidote to the way, Freud had poisoned the well of religion. But I soon discovered the price for following Jung was much too high and entirely obscured, the issue of good and evil in the world. With some difficulty, I repented and returned to orthodox Christianity, a sadder man, but far wiser. We need to do what we can to free Jesus and the faith from the the Jungian perverse lens.
I am a Protestant, believing in justification by faith etc. Catherine’s talk about trust when we are struggling seems to agree with that.I do appreciate your videos and experience a sense of fellowship listening to your ideas and dialogue. I am a Catholic and I also belief in “justification by faith, etc”. After all, we both use the same Bible (and, with the Church in England and Wales soon to replace the Jerusalem Bible with the English Standard Version, probably also the same translation). So, inevitably, we have no choice but to believe the same thing, in so far as it is clearly set out in the Sacred Scriptures. Of course, there is a slight divergence. The Council of Trent, while restating, of course, the doctrine of justification by faith, did discern a difference between the Protestant teaching, which appeared to say that we could attain saving faith by our own unaided efforts, while the Church of course, teaches that faith itself is a gift of God so that salvation is entirely by grace and our own saving faith is only part of that grace.
I will respond to Catherine’s statement that not enough people speak out on the struggles with difficulties with sexual appetites. I will now add my voice to those declaring for Christs Grace and its necessity in overcoming this scourage in our society. I was lost, far from God and the Church, absolutely ensnaredwith sexual appetites and unable to resist it or even wanting to. I remember one time thanking God that I lived in such a progressive free thinking society that I could witness the most intimate of sexual acts by the most beautiful of women I could imagine. When my whole life unraveled from this enslavement I hit rock bottom and in absolute terror of what I was experiencing called out literally to God to save me. And I mean literally instantly I experienced a miraculous intervention I still am in wonder at, and my obsessions were gone and like a magnet was drawn back to God, to daily mass, daily reading the bible, chaste life. None of this is by my power, I am incapable of this transformation. I worked in the mental health field professionally for 30 years and am aware of all the bio psychosocial theories and the psychological understandings of the psyche. Our modern Church is relying very heavily on this “science” to deal with this sexual disorder in our society. Probably because of issues in the past where the Church spoke in areas outside her role and hard science proved her wrong to her great distress and embarrassment. Now the Bishops defer to science, but unfortunately there is no “ hard science” truth for this issue. Currently it is all soft science sociology or mostly theoretical psychological understandings that the German bishops are citing. God draws good from evil, I believe the utter depravity of this time is bringing many people to the brink of despair, My message is that I was a man of the world following its ways ,learned in its philosophy and I could not contend with the powers and principalities ruling our society. I was a slave thinking I was free and being slowly reduced to nothing and spiritual desolation. All it took was from this place of desolation where nothing else had meaning did I finally turn to God and ask him to save me, and his response was instant and overwhelming in its effect. I am greatful in my formative years my mother was diligent in her Catholic faith and gave me an awareness that I had somewhere to turn. My concern is for those in these spiritually void days with no belief in God that they will not have the where with all to know to ask God for his saving Grace, And this of course is the only unforgivable sin , to not ask God for forgiveness. We must ask, we must ask! The supernatural reality of our faith and of a invisible God, a spirit made accessible to us by Jesus Christ made visible to us in his incarnation and cleaving to our humanity to allow us access to the Father, angels and demons, personify the powers and principalities we struggle with, They are real things at a spiritual level of reality. Intellectual pride and fear of being laughed at as foolish medieval peons is the reason for our hierarchies fall from supernatural faith, the shame for the teachings of our Lord. I was firmly in that camp and that way of life chastised me finally and opened my eyes to the reality of Gods truth though it be seen as foolish to men. As Jesus so often said, repent , turn to me for my yoke is light. The solution to the world’s calamities ,a convergence of catastrophes coming upon us now more easily seen, is spiritual, with a turning back to God. It is not in the power or philosophies of men. Words can not express my thank you to you all. Apologies for the grammar. God is great, my thoughts with the same-sex blessing are to stand on the authority of the holy Bible. However, what has been highlighted to me is some knowledge about the Catholic church. I now believe that I can have conversations with my Catholic friends about their religion. I also know more about the church of England than I did before. For me, God has turned all this around and as a born-again Christian, I will keep on praying for the lost, my family and friends. Gavin mentioned we need to play the game and how true. Jesus said we must be wise. Another discussion was the bones of Adam at the feet of Christ, that was a lovely image to have in my heart. These are testing times for us/everyone. The God I know wants everyone on earth to hear the good gospel news the truth and be saved. I have been a follower of Erik Varden for a while and so greatly appreciated Katherine’s reading of his excellent book on chastity . Needless to say I enjoyed the discussion but I do wonder if you are in some ways misunderstanding FS . Surely it will be an encouraging grace for many gay Christians to read it and gain an insight into possible transformation . It isn’t just a static blessing of gayness per se . Perhaps each person has a microphone which could be turned off if they’re not speaking for any length of time and if they know that they have noise in their background. Some people genuinely struggle to concentrate when there is distracting noise. It can interrupt your train of thought and be quite jarring.If technology (a mic turned off) can eliminate the noise, then that would be the all round considerate thing to do, and wouldn’t harm anyone.

You people might be a suitable trio to present a recent 'realisation' I have had (..maybe). That is that the word 'media' is very similar to the word 'Medea'. As you will know Medea was the lover then wife of Jason (of Argonaut fame) who, when he thought that ditching her and marrying the wife of a king nearby, Medea slaughtered all their children, and Jason was unable to have children with the next wife (can't recall why at this moment, but it's not necessary for my point). But the name 'Medea' means (apparently) 'schemer' and 'planner'. I suggest that the media is the planner and schemer of societies beliefs and apprehensions and will result in the murder of what should have been the children of fathers who were poorly advised. The media/medea ultimately cuts off its nose to spite its face. We, all of us, will be the victims, i.e. this includes those in the media (all of them/us). Time to ditch the whole lot of them? That includes you three! I'm open to hearing comments or thoughts on this.
The DDF should withdraw the document Fiducia Supplicans. As a Byzantine Catholic I could no more assent to Fiducia Supplicans than I could to the Henotikon of Zeno, the Ekthesis of Heraclius, or the Typos of Constans, because - like all of those earlier documents - it (i.e., Fiducia Supplicans) fails to teach the truth about man's relationship with God. No one can bless sin.
Thanks for your lovely and lively conversation. However, I do get concerned when you keep talking about salvation leading to transformation and that helping us ‘get to heaven’. Surely, God’s big plan is that he will ultimately come to live with his people on a renewed earth (Revelation 21) rather than us joining God in some extra-terrestrial situation that you call ‘heaven’. Could you explain your thinking here?
we are breath of living soul casted into an animal skin... the urges are from the beast I would say within but it'S trully around us as it's the envellop that we are in... God first commandment was "multiply" as he said to the beasts aswell... but he addedd for man... Stop this, no saints ever disobeyed the pope and the church.. No saint ever disobeyed the pope, even Mary in her many apparitions obeyed the church and instructed her visionaries to obey their priest and bishops. They are examples of extreme holiness, virtue and obedience to Christ and His church.. Padre Pio suffered persecution from the church, but obeyed his bishop.
It is not quite a case of “disobeying” the Pope, since none of the three is, in fact, a Priest having a Pastoral ministry in the Church. As such, they do not (fortunately) need to decide whether or not to “obey” or “disobey” the Pope. As to expressing an opinion other than that held by the Pope - we have, of course, the example of St. Catherine of Sienna, who admonished the Pope, openly and without any apology, for residing in luxury at the expense of the King of France at Avignon (and therefore controlled by the King in matters of policy) rather than taking up the reigns of Government in person within his own territories. She expressed her strong disagreement with his policy and, in the end, he did agree that she was right and that he was wrong and he did return to Rome and took up the Government of the States of the Church in person and no longer submitted, in policy matters, to the King of France. This gave him the independence which he needed not only in political matters, but also in doctrinal matters. Then again, St. Athanasius was instructed by Pope Liberius to keep silent on the Arian heresy. He exiled him four times to try to get him out of the way. St. Athanasius paid no attention to the Pope, because he considered that there Pope was wrong, which, in the event, the Council of Nicaea found him to be. So, the history of the Church does teach us that a Pope can err and that he is subject to correction, even by a lay person and even by a lay woman!

As intelligent theologians, maybe do some critical thinking about your response and urge to publish videos that cause confusion and concern among the laity. If everyone had kept their traps shut and had reflected on FS with some religious docility, in line with previous church teaching, including Pope Francis’s recent statement to the German bishops denying the possibility of same sex marriage, in a hermeneutic of continuity in other words, there wouldn’t be this mess. You and other talking heads on UA-cam are the cause of the problem. But no, you like the attention. Morally, it’s grave matter.
The morally grave matter is to lead the faithful into sin because they are unsuspecting and docile, and trust high clerics. Jesus has strong words for those who scandalize the little ones. And right now the little ones are very scandalised. It is not for nothing that Jesus tells us to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing and St Paul warns us that Satan can appear as an Angel of Light.
I don't see any hermeneutic of continuity in Cardinal Fernandez defense of FS when he said "We're blessing the relationship, not the union" , when FS includes no caveat to tell them to stop 'uniting'. Because if there were, there wouldn't have been a purpose for FS in the first place. FS is a clear break from Tradition, hence the backlash. This will be overturned in the end. And the end may not be too far away.

Hello Louise, thakn you for your kind remarks. I'm not sure which of us was drinking wine, but I don't think the incidence of alcoholism is greater among Catholics than any other group. But there is a case to be made than Catholics know how to celebrate God's gifts of creation and are able to do so particularly because Catholicism is so mature and helpful about the balance between self-denial and celebration, between feast and fast. We would like to be able to model the new humanity that Christ is leading us into and not be afraid or hide, since we are accountable to him for everything. None of the the three of us are alcoholics, or addicts of any other kind, and we ar every grateful to be able to bring the celebratory aspects of our humanity into the field of intellectual and philosophical discipleship ina controlled and responsible way. No Catholic should be afraid of wine since the first miracle at Cana. We should be afraid however of the tempter who is always trying to lure us into excess. Wine is not the problem; our self control is the issue at stake I think. But thank you for your generous concern that no one should be lead astray or un-helped. Bless you.

It is good to finally hear intelligent conversations about sexuality, chastity,and freedom to become holy. My conversion to Catholicism coincided with the challenges of our early marriage years. Today is our 45th wedding anniversary.
So many couples who used natural family planning have so much to offer about intimacy and chastity within marriage, but are never asked for their opinions. Especially about the greater emphasis on the development of the bond between man and woman as a lifelong friendship, shared coping with difficulties and celebration of achievements.
Instead the only Catholic documents written by priests I read back in the 80s talked about providing for a spouse who was " genitally needy". It was effectively the genitalization and consumerization of Catholic teaching and it was very childish.
It is especially good to hear a young woman and older married men speak.
St John Paul II s theology of the body has not been read by a wide audience. Instead we have been dumbed down in our parishes in effect by priests who were struggling to understand the sexual revolution in society and coping with their own struggles. Post Vatican II priests are hopeless in the confessional because they have accepted the horizontal dimension of an appetite driven social norm. This is why they don't preach effectively about sexual morality and they are far too accepting of the rainbow agenda. So they become accommodating to the shallowness of society and never present any other vision.
Priests of the 80s and 90s have become bishops and Popes of this time. Still clueless and struggling to cope with their own sexuality. More importantly, totally clueless about holiness and only to willing to " Be kind" if it suits them and
practice deception and grovelling as necessary for advancing their own career.

Not sure if this is the right video to post this comment, but I find Gavin’s analysis of Jungian theory & philos. to be of major importance. I could write a book on how it has been used to make people think there is no sin, no right or wrong. Thanks for illuminating this & other pitfalls of being Catholic/Christian in today’s world. We really need to be careful about what we “let in.” I hope we hear more from CU or Gavin about how psychology can put us down the wrong path. There is a famous Catholic Jungian analyst who has written many books. Many of us followed her, but years ago I was taken aback by this one quote. “There is very little right/wrong or good/bad in this world. There is, however, useful and not useful.” I’m thinking I have some cleaning of bookshelves to do. Speak, CU! Speak!
Thanks Kate, in my middle period I became a convinced Jungian, though, partly because I believe he provided an antidote to the way, Freud had poisoned the well of religion. But I soon discovered the price for following Jung was much too high and entirely obscured, the issue of good and evil in the world. With some difficulty, I repented and returned to orthodox Christianity, a sadder man, but far wiser. We need to do what we can to free Jesus and the faith from the the Jungian perverse lens.
Jung was an occultist. As you intuited, we should stay far away from him.
I am a Protestant, believing in justification by faith etc. Catherine’s talk about trust when we are struggling seems to agree with that.I do appreciate your videos and experience a sense of fellowship listening to your ideas and dialogue.

I am a Catholic and I also belief in “justification by faith, etc”. After all, we both use the same Bible (and, with the Church in England and Wales soon to replace the Jerusalem Bible with the English Standard Version, probably also the same translation). So, inevitably, we have no choice but to believe the same thing, in so far as it is clearly set out in the Sacred Scriptures. Of course, there is a slight divergence. The Council of Trent, while restating, of course, the doctrine of justification by faith, did discern a difference between the Protestant teaching, which appeared to say that we could attain saving faith by our own unaided efforts, while the Church of course, teaches that faith itself is a gift of God so that salvation is entirely by grace and our own saving faith is only part of that grace.

I will respond to Catherine’s statement that not enough people speak out on the struggles with difficulties with sexual appetites. I will now add my voice to those declaring for Christs Grace and its necessity in overcoming this scourage in our society. I was lost, far from God and the Church, absolutely ensnaredwith sexual appetites and unable to resist it or even wanting to. I remember one time thanking God that I lived in such a progressive free thinking society that I could witness the most intimate of sexual acts by the most beautiful of women I could imagine. When my whole life unraveled from this enslavement I hit rock bottom and in absolute terror of what I was experiencing called out literally to God to save me. And I mean literally instantly I experienced a miraculous intervention I still am in wonder at, and my obsessions were gone and like a magnet was drawn back to God, to daily mass, daily reading the bible, chaste life. None of this is by my power, I am incapable of this transformation. I worked in the mental health field professionally for 30 years and am aware of all the bio psychosocial theories and the psychological understandings of the psyche. Our modern Church is relying very heavily on this “science” to deal with this sexual disorder in our society. Probably because of issues in the past where the Church spoke in areas outside her role and hard science proved her wrong to her great distress and embarrassment. Now the Bishops defer to science, but unfortunately there is no “ hard science” truth for this issue. Currently it is all soft science sociology or mostly theoretical psychological understandings that the German bishops are citing. God draws good from evil, I believe the utter depravity of this time is bringing many people to the brink of despair, My message is that I was a man of the world following its ways ,learned in its philosophy and I could not contend with the powers and principalities ruling our society. I was a slave thinking I was free and being slowly reduced to nothing and spiritual desolation. All it took was from this place of desolation where nothing else had meaning did I finally turn to God and ask him to save me, and his response was instant and overwhelming in its effect. I am greatful in my formative years my mother was diligent in her Catholic faith and gave me an awareness that I had somewhere to turn. My concern is for those in these spiritually void days with no belief in God that they will not have the where with all to know to ask God for his saving Grace, And this of course is the only unforgivable sin , to not ask God for forgiveness. We must ask, we must ask! The supernatural reality of our faith and of a invisible God, a spirit made accessible to us by Jesus Christ made visible to us in his incarnation and cleaving to our humanity to allow us access to the Father, angels and demons, personify the powers and principalities we struggle with, They are real things at a spiritual level of reality. Intellectual pride and fear of being laughed at as foolish medieval peons is the reason for our hierarchies fall from supernatural faith, the shame for the teachings of our Lord. I was firmly in that camp and that way of life chastised me finally and opened my eyes to the reality of Gods truth though it be seen as foolish to men. As Jesus so often said, repent , turn to me for my yoke is light. The solution to the world’s calamities ,a convergence of catastrophes coming upon us now more easily seen, is spiritual, with a turning back to God. It is not in the power or philosophies of men. All glory and honor to God the father through our Lord Jesus Christ accompanied by the Holy Spirit and our blessed mother Mary.

God is great, my thoughts with the same-sex blessing are to stand on the authority of the holy Bible. However, what has been highlighted to me is some knowledge about the Catholic church. I now believe that I can have conversations with my Catholic friends about their religion. I also know more about the church of England than I did before. For me, God has turned all this around and as a born-again Christian, I will keep on praying for the lost, my family and friends. Gavin mentioned we need to play the game and how true. Jesus said we must be wise. Another discussion was the bones of Adam at the feet of Christ, that was a lovely image to have in my heart. These are testing times for us/everyone. The God I know wants everyone on earth to hear the good gospel news the truth and be saved.

I have been a follower of Erik Varden for a while and so greatly appreciated Katherine’s reading of his excellent book on chastity . Needless to say I enjoyed the discussion but I do wonder if you are in some ways misunderstanding FS . Surely it will be an encouraging grace for many gay Christians to read it and gain an insight into possible transformation . It isn’t just a static blessing of gayness per se . It’s subtle because it is meant to be the beginning of an inner journey . Gavin seems convinced that it’s a blessing with no questions asked ! Surely some SSA people who may be struggling will find in this church teaching a means of grace towards healing and inner transformation .

Perhaps each person has a microphone which could be turned off if they’re not speaking for any length of time and if they know that they have noise in their background. Some people genuinely struggle to concentrate when there is distracting noise. It can interrupt your train of thought and be quite jarring.If technology (a mic turned off) can eliminate the noise, then that would be the all round considerate thing to do, and wouldn’t harm anyone.

You people might be a suitable trio to present a recent 'realisation' I have had (..maybe). That is that the word 'media' is very similar to the word 'Medea'. As you will know Medea was the lover then wife of Jason (of Argonaut fame) who, when he thought that ditching her and marrying the wife of a king nearby, Medea slaughtered all their children, and Jason was unable to have children with the next wife (can't recall why at this moment, but it's not necessary for my point). But the name 'Medea' means (apparently) 'schemer' and 'planner'. I suggest that the media is the planner and schemer of societies beliefs and apprehensions and will result in the murder of what should have been the children of fathers who were poorly advised. The media/medea ultimately cuts off its nose to spite its face. We, all of us, will be the victims, i.e. this includes those in the media (all of them/us). Time to ditch the whole lot of them? That includes you three!

As a Byzantine Catholic I could no more assent to Fiducia Supplicans than I could to the Henotikon of Zeno, the Ekthesis of Heraclius, or the Typos of Constans, because - like all of those earlier documents - it (i.e., Fiducia Supplicans) fails to teach the truth about man's relationship with God. No one can bless sin.

Surely, God’s big plan is that he will ultimately come to live with his people on a renewed earth (Revelation 21) rather than us joining God in some extra-terrestrial situation that you call ‘heaven’. when it's of all the sexual perversion the less worst... as it's jsut a personal struggle with our own selve...

No saint ever disobeyed the pope, even Mary in her many apparitions obeyed the church and instructed her visionaries to obey their priest and bishops.
They are examples of extreme holiness, virtue and obedience to Christ and His church..
Padre Pio suffered persecution from the church, but obeyed his bishop.
It is not quite a case of “disobeying” the Pope, since none of the three is, in fact, a Priest having a Pastoral ministry in the Church. As such, they do not (fortunately) need to decide whether or not to “obey” or “disobey” the Pope. As to expressing an opinion other than that held by the Pope - we have, of course, the example of St. Catherine of Sienna, who admonished the Pope, openly and without any apology, for residing in luxury at the expense of the King of France at Avignon (and therefore controlled by the King in matters of policy) rather than taking up the reigns of Government in person within his own territories. She expressed her strong disagreement with his policy and, in the end, he did agree that she was right and that he was wrong and he did return to Rome and took up the Government of the States of the Church in person and no longer submitted, in policy matters, to the King of France. This gave him the independence which he needed not only in political matters, but also in doctrinal matters. Then again, St. Athanasius was instructed by Pope Liberius to keep silent on the Arian heresy. He exiled him four times to try to get him out of the way. St. Athanasius paid no attention to the Pope, because he considered that there Pope was wrong, which, in the event, the Council of Nicaea found him to be. So, the history of the Church does teach us that a Pope can err and that he is subject to correction, even by a lay person and even by a lay woman!

The morally grave matter is to lead the faithful into sin because they are unsuspecting and docile, and trust high clerics. Jesus has strong words for those who scandalize the little ones. And right now the little ones are very scandalised.
It is not for nothing that Jesus tells us to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing and St Paul warns us that Satan can appear as an Angel of Light.
I don't see any hermeneutic of continuity in Cardinal Fernandez defense of FS when he said "We're blessing the relationship, not the union" , when FS includes no caveat to tell them to stop 'uniting'. Because if there were, there wouldn't have been a purpose for FS in the first place. FS is a clear break from Tradition, hence the backlash. This will be overturned in the end. And the end may not be too far away.

Hello Louise, thakn you for your kind remarks. I'm not sure which of us was drinking wine, but I don't think the incidence of alcoholism is greater among Catholics than any other group. But there is a case to be made than Catholics know how to celebrate God's gifts of creation and are able to do so particularly because Catholicism is so mature and helpful about the balance between self-denial and celebration, between feast and fast. We would like to be able to model the new humanity that Christ is leading us into and not be afraid or hide, since we are accountable to him for everything. None of the the three of us are alcoholics, or addicts of any other kind, and we ar every grateful to be able to bring the celebratory aspects of our humanity into the field of intellectual and philosophical discipleship ina controlled and responsible way. No Catholic should be afraid of wine since the first miracle at Cana. We should be afraid however of the tempter who is always trying to lure us into excess. Wine is not the problem; our self control is the issue at stake I think. But thank you for your generous concern that no one should be lead astray or un-helped. Bless you.
