  • Welcome to this PMDG 777 ILS tutorial, or how to fly an ILS approach with the PMDG 777 in FSX.
    We fly the ILS approach runway 31R at New York Kennedy Airport (KJFK) with the PMDG 777-300ER (the tutorial applies to all 777 variants). Great approach to fly with view of Manhattan in the background....As real as it gets.
    We also introduce the concept of CDA (continuous descent approach).
    FSiPanel is used to position the aircraft on the approach.
    Weather CAVOK, wind calm, Altimeter 2992.

    I love you videos! I am new subscriber and i have to to say, the pace if perfect: not too fast, but fast enough not to be boring for people who know what is going on. All other channels are either too slow, too much bla bla. After watching hundreds of other PMDG videos, im certain your channel is one of the very best out there. Thanks a lot for your effort.

    Great video as always! I have two questions. Firstly, I've read somewhere that CAT III and CAT II use Radio and CAT I approaches use Barometric minima so I want to know if that's correct and secondly I wanted to ask that where do we put glideplath angle (in this case 3.0°)

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  4 роки тому

      Correct for the various ILS approaches. The glideslope angle cannot be set, it is as per the design of the procedure.

    Good morning thank you for a brilliant tutorial. Do you normally fly with the level change function un the descent? Regards

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  5 років тому +1

      Thank you. Initially, I would use VNAV and follow the descent path (VNAV PTH) as it is the most efficient, above all if there are level/altitude restrictions in the descent. Then, under radar vectors on the approach, a mix of level change and vertical speed usually does the trick.

    question, when flying the 777 flight sim, I can use auto pilot heading
    select and heading hold but How do I able to manually steer plane but
    keep auto pilot controlling altitude and auto throttle. I try to
    press "HOLD" on and off but still can't steer plane manually. Only fix
    was to go into Options and pick a keyboard shortcut to turn Heading Hold
    on and off. That worked but seems like it should be easy on the MCU or
    in Cockpit

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  2 роки тому

      Hi...yes you can change the heading by turning the heading knob to the desired heading.
      I suggest you either fly manually or with the autopilot totally engaged.
      Flying with Altitude Hold and turning the aircraft manually is not really correct.

    Great Video again! learn something new everyday. Question as a newbie to 777 & its autopilot. I'm used to flying smaller GA twin bonanzas & once localizer is caught I hit approach and Glide Slope captures next, I only adjust my throttle because it doesn't have autothrottle etc. But why do we need to auto set "Vertical Speed" to capture Glide Slope & not let autopilot simply catch the 3 degree Glideo Slope to runway? I did try it and on my 777-200er once I clicked "Approach" it nose dived on me & didn't recover until at 200ft. Any ideas would be great- Thanks!

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  2 роки тому

      Hi thanks for your message. To be honest I am not sure why your aircraft nose dived like that.
      If you are in level flight at the platform altitude and intercept the glideslope it should never nose dive, above all if you already have the gear extended and flaps 20.

    Hey nice Video really enjoy it, I have a problem, if I want to turn off AP it just don’t turns off. I press the AP button but nothing happens. The only way to turn it off is to press the yoke until it turns off automatically. The problem is that it is not correct and unstabilizes the approach. For example on the a320neo you can press AP button and it’s off. Why does it not work?

    Nice video!!! I'm pretty new on PMDG 777 and im on FSX now.
    My question is, after a long flight and approaching my T/D (Top of Descend), how do i programmed the ILS? Because the ILS replaces all of the waypoint and have separate set of waypoint from my original flight plan. When i should activate and execute ILS from my T/D point.
    Another thing is, can i use the LNAV and the VNAV to guide me to correct speed, heading and altitude until the very end when localizer & G/S being captured and activate APP button after that.

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  2 роки тому

      Hi. You need to set both the STAR and the ILS, everything should generally link together.
      Then LNA/VNAV can take you to a point on the ILS when you can engage APP and fly the ILS.
      I have a lot of flight videos on the channel where I show the descent/approach FMC set up, have a look around👍

    I''ve been researching charts and tried to find the correct answer before I posted here. At 1:13 in your video you show your chart. Mine look identical.
    The part of the chart I want to focus on is the bottom where 31R is listed with the category of the ILS.
    I am looking at KSFO ILS 28L and 28R in the same section.
    ILS 28L has CAT 1 listed twice with two different minimums. I don't understand why this is. Same goes for 28R where it was CAT 3b, CAT 2, CAT 1, and LOCO listed with all of its minimums.
    So the confusion is this. For example 28R has three different categories of ILS. 3b, 2, and 1. If the chart says 3b does that mean i can always expect to be able to autoland but i could choose to do a cat 2, or 1 approach if I wish?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +XBOXORANGEJUICE Yes, that is correct. If it shows Cat IIIB, then you can autoland. With Cat I, you can't autoland. However, you don't have to autoland everytime. You would autoland only when required.

    The buttons on the autopilot panel are a pain in VC miss the 2 D for such settings , switching views can cause the sim to crash .

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  3 роки тому

      Nowadays most aircraft addons feature a "virtual cockpit" in which you can move around using either the default sim views or a camera software like Chaseplane or EZDok. Something we all need to get used to. If the sim crashes there might be a problem with the sim.

    Hi captain, do you have A/T ON when you are on final until you are on the ground? I have PMDG 777 only 2 weeks and I discovered the A/T has a different logic as NGX. Do you work with thrust levers manually during final? Or do you leave this job on aircraft itself?

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  6 років тому

      +Přemek Janša At least in the airline I work for, we keep the A/T on all the way to touchdown and using the reversers. Other airlines might do it differently, but I think that keeping the A/T on is a Boeing recommendation.

    Do you have any tutorials for setting flaps etc.? I'm unfamiliar with FMC and tablets as I normally like to just get in the cockpit and go! I can't lower my flaps and when I try and take off from (say) London Heathrow, I barely reach 150knts and run out of runway!!!!

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  6 днів тому

      To fly an aircraft like the 777, you need to become familiar with the FMC, etc...
      If you takeoff (with at least flap 5) and just make it airborne, you probably don't have enough power or you are way too heavy.
      I understand your desire to just fly, but you do need a minimum of a set up to get this bird up in the air.
      Have a look around the channel, hopefully you can find a useful video.

    Hello Captain, I got some issues to understand work principle of LOC/APP. First, Is that mandatory to switch LOC first and APP second? (Because they say LOCs' range is more than G/Ss' and that's why it captured first or it depends on aerodrome instrument approach chart? You just omitted LOC & pressed APP and some how lt captured both horizontal and verilcal guidance. This is what I'm struggling to understand.

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  8 років тому +2

      +Cənab Dərin Məntiq You are absolutely right, you should switch LOC first, then APP. However, to keep things simple, you can select APP straight away, above all here in a desktop simulation.
      The ILS has two components: the localiser, which offers lateral guidance, and the glideslope, which gives you vertical guidance. In any case, you should capture the localiser first, and then the glideslope. APP mode is usually designed to work that way, anyway.
      Loc will only track the localiser, APP will track BOTH the localiser and the glideslope.

    Me again !Interesting to see that you need to fully configure the aircraft to meet the 160 to 4 miles restriction at many major airports. Easier to get down to final app speed I guess...
    My question for you is, do you always aim to be F15 and at F15 speed on the G/S at a normal/heavy GW ? Because I sometimes get a 15-20Nm final and even with F15 it's almost impossible to decelerate and I find ~170kts a bit slow when at 15Nm.
    F20 maybe ? No speedbrakes beyond F5 correct ?
    Any tips ?
    Real world 737 driver there, but still have an interest for flight simming and the 777 as a hobby :)
    Merci d'avance !

      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +Sam7x If you are heavier than 220 tonnes, to fly 160 to 4, you will need to go below flap 20 speed, so you kind of need to configure flap 30 early. Ideally, you need to be stablised by 1000 feet, so waiting 4 miles or 1200 feet to go flaps 30 and decelerate and then get the thrust back on is not going to work. A heavy 777 will not slow down and go down, so ideally, yes, you would aim for at least F5, or better F15 to intercept the glideslope. On those long final where you intercept the G/S at 5000 feet, you don't have a choice, you need to slown down to 180 max to fly the glideslope. You can use the gear and/or flap 20 if you want, or the speedbrakes (although I have always considered using the speedbrakes when on the G/S is a lack of energy management). If you have a low platform altitude and a long final, then it makes it easier to keep the speed up, manage the energy and also achieve a CDA in the process....

      Alexander, your English is fine. If you arm the APP (approach) mode, the localiser LOC and Glideslope GS should follow the ILS all the way down to the runway. You need to make sure the autopilot is engaged too.

    I believe an autopilot tutorial would be amazing. After a while of messing with the aircraft in different configurations you learn how to 'handle' it with the systems. Though sometimes I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if the plane acts like it is suppose to under the circumstances.
    For example I have been flying back and forth between KSFO and KSEA using Simbrief to plan the flight. I learned a lot about the weights, the fuel, reserves, and more from your videos and researching on my own time.
    However, this question is about the autopilot. After takeoff how long do you manually fly the aircraft before turning it off?
    Also once you're on LNAV and VNAV it will climb and follow your route perfectly. However I have had issues with it wanting to overspeed at certain times all by itself. I'll have to pay more attention to pinpoint when this happens.
    Then on an LNAV/VNAV autopilot route the decent down through the waypoints is often botched horribly. If you don't use flight level change and manually control the decent you often are too high and quite often miss the expected altitudes on the decent through waypoints. Other times it works perfectly. I don't understand what makes it work perfect sometimes and other times it does not.

    • @HolyOrangeJuice
      @HolyOrangeJuice 7 років тому

      Just had success with the LNAV and VNAV from T/D down to where I needed to get vectors. I turn the altitude knob down to each altitude in the legs page and the plane responded properly. Also pushed in the altitude knob after I passed the proper waypoint. Maybe i was forgetting to do that part.

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +XBOXORANGEJUICE Excellent!

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +XBOXORANGEJUICE The autopilot can be engaged at 200 feet after take off and be kept on until after landing if you wish. VNAV can sometimes be tricky, but if all the waypoints in the legs page are sequenced correctly, then there should be no problems.

      On a normal flight, try to set up the STAR and the ILS in the FMC when you are still far away from your destination. If you are cruising at FL350, then set a 35(0)×3 +15 = 120nm ring based on the airport not to miss the top of descent and have everything set up. Then follow the descent all the way to the published altitude to start the ILS approach.

      Flightz your logic is terribly flawed. With your logic pilots fly 24/7 and don’t have time to spend with families and with your logic pilots don’t need to sharpen their flying skills and with your logic they take empty 777s for practice flights. I love how you say ‘have a good one’ like you made a valid point. The airline gives the requirements on how many hours a pilot needs to fly and they have schedule, he’s giving a tutorial to people.

    My Questions
    1.Where did this flight take off from ?
    2.Am i doing it wrong if i have LNAV and VNAV on during the entire course of flight ?
    3.How did you do the entire gross weight calculation stuff ?
    4.Where you flying as per your own wish or by sids and stars in the right order ?
    5.I set up sids and stars and runway on the fmc on the ground,is that the correct sequence ?
    6.What add ons did you have during this video ?
    Sorry for all the questions :/

    • @CaptainNav
      @CaptainNav  7 років тому

      +Mohammad Adil The flight did not take off at all, I use fsipanel to position the aircraft on the approach. You can have lnav and vnav all the time, but you won't fly an ils if lnav and vnav are engaged. To calculate your approach speed or vref (if I understand your question), you add the predicted arrival fuel to the zero fuel weight. Normally, you would fly using Sids and Stars, and you would set them up on the ground, yes. No many add ons for the video, if I remember properly, just a demo of a JFK scenery, that is it.

      To do an autoland, you need to fly an ILS approach and engage the APP mode. LNAV and VNAV won't let you do an autoland.
