At church on Sundays, the laity are families, parents, children, youth, elderly, sick, non english speaking people, people with hearing and vision difficulties, non catholics, tourists, visitors. We don''t need a long academic homily at Sunday Mass, when there are little children running around (God bless them!) or someone is feeble and needs to just attend Mass and go home or someone who is not intellectual. A very simple Homily reflecting on the Gospel and other Readings, Feasts of the day. I myself don't remember the homilies that have been spoken all my life but the Word has most definitely healed me and penetrated my thinking, just a Word that God wants each of us to hear. Refresh people's memory of the teachings of the catholic church, the Ten Commandments or One of them at least. People don't know their faith and have developed brain fog on this matter!
I believe people began to ask for annulments when they saw the priests and the nuns give up their vocations. So people who were in unhappy marriages, but were remaining together, looked at that, and thought why should I remain in this marriage when these priests and nuns who have given vows before God can walk away from their vocation.
Here’s a problem with requiring a divorce. You’re requiring someone to commit a grave evil against natural law? (CCC 2383) when there is another option on the table civilly (Legal Separation)? So, there is another option. That covers the footnote in the Catechism (in the US at least). A real problem.
Pope John Paul II observed that the Annulment was being granted all too easily. One on-line Q&A session noted I saw a few days ago noted that for decades many cases presented were examined only superficially. It's really sad. I think that unless we contemplate marriage prayerfully and under the guidance of a spiritual director we are inviting trouble and yes, here in l'il olde England I believe prior civil divorce is a requirment before starting annulment proceedings. To my mind, it's wierd! In these circumstances, it looks like the diocese is giving a presumption of annulment, period!
Annulment grounds? One evangeliser I heard many years ago cited one case in which unbeknown to her husband, the wife was using contraception from the start, the husband becoming aware of this only 8 months into the marriage hence, the wife was not open to new life and the marriage was declared null.
But lack of respect and reverence for the Eucharist itself… How for years, I would just casually walk up to the Eucharist, and take it in my hands, from the hands of another lay person. It makes me so sad now. Why are we not all dropping to our knees in the presence of God? I think maybe if we start at the Eucharist… Then that can affect marriage health.
The government needs to be involved in marriage because adultery is criminal. The church handles civil issues but the government handles crimes. The church should discipline their members. God gave us the church and the government (with its punishments).
Only in some states, not most. And the no-fault divorce laws are unjust anyway, so while the government must be involved, I don’t know that they add a whole lot of value.
Yes, the civil divorce requirement is a real problem, particularly given the unjust divorce laws. I think the Church needs to catch up there.

How does one contact the Roman Rota?
Mary’s Advocates. There’s a website.
