  • HAMNET is the Highspeed Amateurradio Multimedia NETwork which provides high speed network connectivity among radio amateurs in Germany and wider Europe.
I had the chance to speak with Jann Traschewski, DG8NGN about HAMNET, its history and how it came to be, where it is going and what it could be, and how we can possibly do something similar in other countries.
HAMNET is made possible with a generous grant from Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC) and uses Net-44 IP space, also administered by ARDC. For more information see the website at - www.ardc.net
You can find out more about hamnet at hamnet.eu

This is cool! Packet was the second activity I has a ham and I wish higher speed networking took off.
I never got into AREDN cause it feels pigeon holed into emergency/public service (correct me if I'm wrong)
I like the idea of just build the network. Everything else is just an overlay application.
(Ugh, I should probably bite my tongue until the next convention)

I think we should do hamnet in the US. There is interest. Hamnet is doing exactly what you said - building the network and then emcomm will use it.

@@n2rj apologies for the incoming rant. I will try to circle this back. This came to me lurking in the M17 discord and looking at the Same position schedule.
Do hamfests/conventions do lightning talks like hacker/IT conventions do? The "hallway track" can be very useful.
Hamnet would be a great 1-2m talk to then take to a corner to take further discussion.
Hamnet on the whole I think would be fun. So many possibilities once there's a base network.
Hamnet reminds me of Eduroam. I heard about it on an episode of Heavy Wireless. Eduroam is a wirmfi network for university students/academics in Europe. As long as your creds are valid, you could login wherever Eduroam was available.
The episode centered around bringing that to the US for elementary/high school.

I wish we could expand this throughout the country like we're trying to expand broadband now.

It’s possible to do some regionally but we need motivation and space to put these up. That’s one reason we need to fight the forest service fees as that will make it expensive to do this.
