    Thanks for presenting the data. Bottom line, Lightning will be great for metro area contractors and people who commute with the truck and go to Home Depot on the weekend. People who tow long distances at highway speeds will stick with ICE until EV's improve. But that's OK since EV pickups make up 0% of today's fleet so not a problem if current EV's can't cover 100% of use cases.

    Detail oriented people like you make the world better! I'm a mechanical engineer weighing if a standard or extended range will meet my driving needs in central California. Thanks for including important information like the charge test was after a 3-hour 70-mph drive test (battery was warm) and the ambient temperature was 95F. Thank you!

    You have to save setting twice every time. It ignores you the first save and will save one time setting on the second try. Every time

    If you precondition the battery before charging you also get better results. If you set your destination as a charger, it will precondition your battery on the way there, allowing for more efficient charging. I pulled up to an EA charger this morning, 25°F out, and was getting 160kw at 53%-63%ish and then 110kw from 63% to 80%.

    Did this truck have the Max Tow package? I wonder if the Pro with the Max Tow would have charged a bit faster.

    It’s been awhile since I’ve watched one of these videos covering 0%-100% DC charging. Typically I don’t invest the time if it’s not a vehicle I’m interested in. This one caught my eye because it’s the standard range level, and I strongly believe that those sorts of vehicles need more attention - they tend to be the most affordable EVs out there. (I have a standard range Model 3, which is a great daily driver as well as a capable road tripper.)
    I’m very interested in the total charging environment, not the least of which is does the Lightning precondition the battery as it’s approaching a charging station? What kind of info is shown inside the truck re: charging session? Are you able to keep climate control On while charging at a very low SOC?

    Good video. Does Ford have literature on their charging curves, especially, for the typical home charging on a 240 V, 30 or 40 Amp circuit? I think doing a video on home charging would offer good info for the majority of people. I’m a retired engineer so guess I like “data”.
    Hopefully, charging rates can improve once there is a better understanding of temperature of battery versus life cycle (or maybe there already is?). Improved battery technology might help, as well.
    Also, I hope you will look at range and charging in cold weather conditions. That is really important in the Midwest where winters can really be brutal with temperatures dropping to -30 F.
    Finally, one of the biggest drawbacks of any EV is towing range versus time to recharge versus number/location of fast chargers (which you have already indicated).

    Careful, there is a warning in the manual about SR batteries DC fast charging.
    p197 "Frequent use of DC charging could result in reducing your battery's efficiency and
    lifespan. This is more pronounced on the standard range battery pack versus the extended range battery pack."
    -Not sure why DC fast charging would have a bigger effect on the SR vs. the ER battery. I would think the ER battery would suffer the same problem of electrons backing up, trying to find the fewer and fewer spots left in the anode/cathode to fill. Maybe the stress on the SR battery happens after 80%, whereas the ER battery stress is after 90%? Is it something about the battery cell material breaking down? How does the voltage change with state of charge?
    p219 "Use AC charging when possible and minimize the use of DC charging. It helps to preserve your high voltage battery’s efficiency and lifespan. We recommend ending DC charges at 80% state of charge.
    Note: The system could reduce DC fast charging rate to preserve the battery. This is based on battery temperature, battery state of charge and battery health."
    *How will battery health be determined?*
    Seems the only difference in AC and DC charging is the Amp (current) rate flowing into the battery? AC gets converted by the vehicle inverter to DC current (Ford provides an 80A @ 240Vac charger max = 19.2kW) and that is a much lower rate of current than that available from a DC 20kW to 350kW charger.
    Compared to the Ford 400Vdc battery would a Porsche / Hyundai 800Vdc battery system be more or less stressed when charged by a 150kW system, although they charge twice as fast?
    Wtih better range with around town driving, stopping at 80% should be fine, and saves time as the power input drops off.

    Hi Tom.
    You make very good graphs of the charting however I believe your missing one specific thing.
    Efficiency of the (Battery (Fast Charging)) and (Charger + Battery level 2)
    How much power actually landet in the Battery VS Consumption.
    Haven't seen anybody doing it.
    If I was to purchase a car, this would have my full attention.

    Does battery cooling have anything to do with charging rate? I ordered the max tow package standard range pro since they said it has 2x the artery cooling (I’m not planning to tow). My expected delivery date is fall 2023

    At 12min in looking at the charge graphs. I have to ask, can you look at doing the X-Axis as time, and do two plots on the graph, one showing battery percent and the other showing charge rate (percent by time and charge rate by time). Power x SoC is interesting (and fairly standard) but loses out on the time aspect. As we are most interested in time, and each EV has a different battery size, showing both time and rate would be nice.
    Another thing I noticed is in the charge by time plot itself. If charge rate drops off significantly at 80% then there should be a corresponding change in slope of the % by Time graph, however we don't see that. Any info?

    Hey Tom, What would happen if you unplug your charge session after 15 minutes and then started a new session, would you get an additional rapid boost of charge? Would doing this damage the battery?
    My XLT standard range battery Lightning is scheduled to be built in December, so wanting to get a better understanding on charging... Thanks, have watched all of your videos on the Lightning. Great information!

    Did you have the max tow package on either truck, this adds cooling capacity to the motors and maybe The battery? Could this eliminate the dips and possibly lead to enhanced charging?

    Hard to figure out standard pack curve. I just had a session on a 350kw EA unit where i got no boost at start, but it held 125-130kw from 26% to 65% then started dropping yo 100kw

    Interestingly. TFLEV just did a 18-80% charge test on the Hummer EV, and because it has a bigger battery and more range, it took the same hour of time for 212 miles, or about the same range as this Pro to 90%. It just happened to cost nearly twice as much. Ouch. 144kwh vs. about 90.

    I have found that changing the limit from 90% to 100% AFTER the charging starts is more likely to take effect.

    I was hoping the charging rate between the SR and the ER were the same. That way I can justify buying the cheaper SR pro and charge quicker but more often. Did this video mention the charge rate /min between both? may have missed it

    I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed in that charge curve for the pro/SR. I get that it's a large battery, but it amounts to about the same amount of range added per minute as the bolt.

    I wonder if those slight dips may correspond with a battery cooling system having its thermostat or cooling fan cycle on or off, and to reduce total load, cutting the charge rate momentarily.

    Very odd.. I just did a 2% to 90% on my PRO model today.. it never exceeded 123kw, but seemed to stay in the triple digits a good bit longer than yours. Overall time was about the same as yours though..

      There's going to be variations from charging session to charging session. I've noticed this with the lightning that the charging sessions usually take about the same amount of time (within 2-3 minutes) even when the charging curves are different.

    Did the Pro in your test have the Max Trailer Tow Package? (per Ford, includes additional battery cooling hardware) In theory, this option (standard on Platinum, optional on all other trims) could favorably impact the charging curve.

    I noticed something glitchy about the One Time charge setting. I had set it at 90% for my home charger but it went up to 100%. It was my first charge so I thought it was just me doing something wrong.

      That's not for home charging, only DC fast charging

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Ah, I think what is missing here is that I am using an ancient Nissan Leaf charger. Ford gave me a charger but it doesn't exactly have the reach so I am relying on older technology and an extension cord. I think you clarified that setting for me and cleared up the messaging that Ford is putting out to only charge up at home to 90%. Looks like it is time for me to upgrade my wall charger.

    There is no reason to cook the battery pack, if your driving is for in town driving if the rate drops stop when the rate drops !

    0-80 or 0-90 is the bandwidth that most road trips would require anyway. 100% charge on DC fast charging doesn’t make any sense.

    Any thoughts about bringing a ~2 kWh battery (Ecoflow, Jackety, etc.) with you when you drive down to 0% SoC to avoid a repeat of the Bolt EV test? I suppose you would need one that can put out 240 V power as L1 charging takes too long. But, as you do, I have back issues and would be worried about how much such a device weighs ( though maybe get dog ramps and a dolly to push it into car).

    With the F150 Lightning Pro based on your 70 mph range test and your charging test you gained 3.42 miles per min of charging... what was the miles per min of charging on your personal F150 Lightning with the larger battery based on your 70 mph driving test and your full charge test?

      4.0 miles/minute based on my range test and 4.75 miles/minute based on the EPA range rating. It doesn't sound like much but when you stay for nearly an hour it adds up. My extended range Lariat will go about 55 miles further when both vehicles reach 80% if you use my range test as the base.

So, on a road trip if you are doing 150 mile legs between chargers you have to charge for an extra 6 min and 20 seconds per stop with the smaller battery version of the F150 Lightning... not that big of a deal when the pro is so much less expensive.

      Also looking forward for test while cooler temperatures. Also one more question, if you start charging at 10-20% will it charge as that state of charge on the 0-100% charging? I mean if I use it and need to use a dc fast charger to add a little mileage to be able to drive home, the small amount of time charging at 140kw would add the miles fast, but would it do the initial minutes at that rate if soc is 15% or pick up rate from your graph (at 15% soc)?

      Not really. I've been driving my EVs for 13 years now. I've done road trips that were more than 1,200 miles without a problem.

      I do an annual road trip of 5000 miles in my EV and it is no problem. My car is over 7 years old and it does fine with the Tesla network. The standard range F-150 has the same range, but not as good of a charging network in the west, so the same road trip is still not possible without using a slightly longer route for me, but I have no doubt it could do the trip

      @@kenmcclow8963 don't believe the hype on the CCS Network. Are there some issues? Yes. Is it as bad as you'd think watching youtube videos? No. I just did a 4000 mile road trip from SoCal to Washington, to ID back down to SoCal and I had no problem doing it on the CCS network.

      I would travel over 500 km every second weekend it would still work for me still 10x cheap then a gas f150 with the price of gas vs electricity here in bc Canada but that charging rate sucka Compared to a tesla for a 90kwh pack

      Yeah, the extended range Lightning is just about good enough for long trips, but the standard range charges 20-25% slower

      It'll work just fine for a lot of businesses. Many work trucks don't drive more than 75-100 miles on any given day. Fleet managers have the data, they know how far the vehicles need to go and they leave the yard fully charged every morning. The standard range Pro will be a game changer as far as TCO for many businesses. Ford could sell 100,000 of these per year if they had the capacity to make them.

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Was 214 mile mostly at 70 mph? Real world mix driving should get more than that. I have heard of 230-240 with mix driving and up to 280 in country roads. I opted for Pro because DCFC would only be needed on long road trips (less than 10% of our drive) and we have an ICE for that. This is not only acceptable for my use case, the bang for the buck makes it that much sweeter. Much of the tech today may look antiquated in 5 years. I feel much better replacing a $40K EV than a $90K one then.

      @@Tooradj The 214 miles was on a total battery range of 230 miles for the 2022 and 240 miles for the 2023. If the range test was done at 60 mph the car might have gotten closer.
      The 280 mile range was a freeway test of the extended range, not this standard range

      @@kenmcclow8963 I got the 280 from a standard range owner in Lightning forum. Not much highway time. But typical owner reports 2.0 to 2.4 mi/KWh based on different driving routs and habits

      When on a road trip, you don’t charge from 0 to 90%, so it doesn’t take this long. Typically, you charge from 30 - 70% (sweet-spot) which is much quicker. However the F150 is a big heavy truck and doesn’t have the charging speed of a Tesla.
