The production standards of 2017? Shitty triggers and every band sounds the same? Give me 80s production any fucking day.
im with you....
AMEN! Just what i thought.
totally with you, pretty much all metal albums of that time had a sound of its own....now everything just sounds generic and boring
Alexander Dinesen "every band sounding the same" you must not be paying much attention
Yeah Most Bands & The piece of shit singers all sound the Same!at least in the 80's you could tell what band it was by the singer. I Liked Kreator, Sodom & sepulture in 1988-90 BUT got tired of every damn singer imitating other singers.
Sepultura "Schizophrenia" 1987
Sepultura in it's prime... (Along with beneath the remains)
Rammelhoofd
Beneath The Remains is so uncompromising...I love that album
Not that good.
Great albums not even mentioned...
Savatage - Hall Of The Mountain King
Death Angel - The Ultra Violence
Sacrifice - Forward To Termination
Agent Steel - Unstoppable Force
Voivod - Killing Technology
Toxik - World Circus
Overkill - Taking Over
Kreator - Terrible Certainty
Destruction - Release From Agony
Sodom - Persecution Mania
Black Sabbath - The Eternal Idol
Manilla Road - Mystification
Hall of the Mountain King is definitely one of my favourite metal albums of all time.
The Classic Heavy Metal Vault The Ultra-Violence... arguably the best instrumental ever. I still have that on my playlist.
Exodus pleasure of the flash
Coroner - R.I.P
Back for the Attack by Dokken
For me
King Diamond-Abigail
Damn right!
100%
They have appetite for destruction and no Abigail, ridiculous....
King Diamond & Mercyful Fate are the ultimate metalhead's metal bands. Never mainstream enough to quite make it into the mainstream lists but super important and notable in the metal world
I'm still disappointed that Hall of the Mountain King isn't up there.
Indeed, it's by far their best album.
Zach Ritchie good call Zach I forgot about that album, definitely more metal than gnr
Zach Ritchie
That's my name. Don't wear it out.
me too. I like these Lps BUT No Over Kill Taking over? I find it hard to believe GNR was sandwiched in between Thrash Metal LPs.I was expecting Def leppard to be on there. any way im proud to say I bought GNR on Tape in 1987, before MTV went crazy with it & they became Huge in 1988.
No King Diamond's Abigail?????????????
alex ladrón king diamond sucks mate
Right? Abigail is a flawless album, and nothing from 87 can touch it.
Totally agree it should be here, but to many people must not be able to get into his voice. Which is kinda understandable.
Blasphemy!
@@GrungeJeans Then you should stick to listening to your Winger albums.
my top 5 from 1987
Necrophagia - Season of the Dead (feb 87)
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark (may 87)
Death - Scream Bloody Gore (may 87)
Sarcófago - INRI (aug 87)
Sepultura - Schizophrenia (oct 87)
Bathory's Under The Sign Of The Black Mark is from 1987. Hail Quorthon.
Voivod - Killing Technology
Easily #1 from 1987 for me. Not even an honorable mention for your fellow Canucks, Sam? :/ Not a fan?
forgotten in space RULES
....more worthy than fucking Helloween, that's for sure.
Many metal publications have a thing for ignoring Voivod, even Sam ignored them for the prog metal episode. People seem to forget how influencial they where to metal and rock in general. When the bands that praised you and cited you as an influence includes: Sonic Youth, Cynic, Death, Darkthrone, Gorguts, Pantera, Foo Fighters, Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Soundgarden, Opeth, Dream Theater, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Metallica and, oh idk, THE MAJORITY OF THE MODERN METAL SCENE FROM PROG METAL TO DJENT, then you possibly a very influencial band. For fuck sakes, even Rolling Stone gave Voivod praise, they put Dimention Hatross in the top 100 Greatest metal albums of all time! wtf?
Yep, easily the number 1. That album revolutionized metal more than any other album from that time. It was way ahead of its time. The reason why Voivod are ignored is because their brand of thrash and later prog was way too adventurous and way too complex and unpredictable, thus not safe enough for the masses, even for the metal masses. What is mind-boggling is that people do not praise Voivod as prog innovators, as they do with bands such as Dream Theater, Queensryche or Fates Warning, who weren't as innovative as them.
and sam wears Voivod shirts and mentions them repeatedly in lockhorns, i think a lot of people just dont know Voivod. Voivod, Gorguts and Cryptopsy are all from my city and even here lots off people don't know them because they're niche.
Guns and Roses is NOT Metal. Period.
Obviously not "period," since many people disagree with you. Deal with it.
They are definitely not a metal band.
Can someone name any song that GNR has, that's METAL?
Arthur Grella GNR is good old classic Blues based Hard Rock not Metal
Arthur Grella So what
I like Dio dream evil from 1987
Yes, truly great. Hail DIO
1987 was a great freakin' year for "crossover" music. Suicidal Tendencies-Join The Army, D.R.I.-Crossover, C.O.C.-Technocracy ep
Just saw D.R.I.(22june2019)
Fkn awesome.
Still holds up....
.......never liked king diamond.
@@jfs13 Never liked King Diamond? I truly pity you for all the amazing music you're missing out on!! Especially the Abigail album; it's a true classic!
@@nonprogrediestregredi1711
....i TRULY appreciate the civil nature of yer responce. I was prepared for an EPIC shitstorm.
I knew i was poking a hornets nest😉(can you expect less from an 80's thrasher?!?)
Nah. I could never get into his vocals.....idk. maybe ill check it out again.
@@jfs13 Yeah, I just had to throw my 2 cents in. I'd be lying if I didn't say that King had to grow on me a little when I first heard him on the Mercyful Fate-Melissa album. I don't think everything he's done is stellar, but his early solo stuff definitely stands out to me. Btw, I agree, DRI has some great music too. I grew up in the 80s and still love it!
Also agnostic front liberty and justice for all
Sam has such a weird way of reviewing albums. "This was groundbreaking. 3 1/2 out of 5" "A lot of these tracks are forgettable. 4 1/2 out of 5"
The Fuck?
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Kreator - Terrible Certainty
King Diamond - Abigail...............
When Luca Modric started doing metal shows?
Honorable Mentions
Exodus - Pleasures of the Flesh
Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence
' bout time someone mentions Exodus !
King Diamonds Abigail should have been included in my opinion.
Do you know how voting works?
@@jimmywest1526 yeah, I think he might be hinting that people are stupid for not voting for Abigail....I'm inclined to agree.
It's remarkable how memorable Among the Living is. Everyone underestimates how great that album and Anthrax in general is.
Does not sound like any other band (cept maybe S.O.D) fast & great production. Prbly the Pinnacle of their career.
Regina Ayat SOD was pretty much Anthrax with Billy Milano on vocals.
Easily their best!
And Candlemass - Nightfall?
Another fantastic album, not mentioned even in the runner ups in this video, is TAKING OVER from Overkill. Great stuff, not one bad song. I was in 3rd and 4th grade in 1987, but this was the year I discovered metal. Can't believe it's been 30 years. Where's my Metamucil?
I was just about to comment that Taking Over is my favorite album from 1987, and I saw your comment. Kudos to you, I was 11 in 1987. My friend Chris came over with his boom box and played In Union We Stand for me, and it changed my whole world. I was really happy to see Helloween on the list. That was a huge album for me as well.
Damn right !!
Don't you mean Metal-mucil?
metaldams78 Overkill...HELL YES...waaay underrated band that never got their due... I have a bunch of their stuff on my current playlist.
metaldams78 lol, the Metamucal is sitting by the Depends
My fav album of 1987 was Lizzy Borden's Visual Lies. 30% power metal, 30% traditional metal, 30% hair metal, and 10% cheese !!!!!
The rappers Anthrax over King "fuckin" Diamond? No way
Totally agree
you should do every year from 1970 til now
Not on the list that should at least merit mention
Death Angel-The Ultra Violence
Exodus-Pleasures of the Flesh
Cacophony-'Speed Metal Symphony
D.R.I.-Crossover
Celtic Frost-Into the Pandemonium
Sanctuary-Refuge Denied
Suicidal Tendencies-Join the Army
Overkill-Taking Over (in my list would be #1)
Kreator-Terrible Certanty
White Lion-Pride (insert sarcasm)
White Lion was more metal than G-n-R.
White Lion's Pride is a good album, who gives a fuck what haters say. "Hair Metal" has the word metal in it for a reason.
5. Persecution Mania, 4. Terrible Certainty, 3. Abigail, 2. Taking Over, 1. Scream Bloody Gore. Oh, and by the way: Appetite is a monster album. Night Train is a Classick!!!
The REAL top 5: 5)Among the Living 4)Scream bloody gore 3)Nightfall (by Candlemass) 2)The Legacy 1)The Ultra Violence
Lol taking over isnt even in top 10 albums, overkill is overrated af, The Legacy destroys it
what about these 3 .. killer lps
Second Heat by Racer X (my best of 87)Unstoppable Force - Agent Steel
Nightfall by Candlemass
King Diamond - Abigail
Surprised to see GnR in here as I thought it was a list of heavy/thrash metal.
Does anyone else just love the crappy production of 80s (thrash) metal records?
Sicsta yes.
Yeah, I love that record, but it's hard rock.
SAVATAGE - Hall of the Mountain King
Where's King diamond Abigail and candlemass nightfall ??
Death Angel:The Ultra-Violence!!!
Punk n Thrash Absolutely!!! Incredible Album!
Punk n Thrash absolutely awesome. Gonna go listen to right now
Death Angel are pure Thrashers.
The Ultra-Violence is a great album, but I am biased towards Death Angel cause we (they and I) share the same home town.
He is replying to "Punk n thrash" (poster).
@@jprp999 oh shit... my bad. I wasn't even thinking of "the one who originally posted." I just now watched the video again looking for an actual poster that I missed somewhere. I have yet to find one in this video, but I'll be sure to let ya know if I do LOL! What was I thinking???
Peace
Gnr is hard rock.
I would label GNR as hard rock, not metal, but YOU, Sam Dunn, listed them as a contender on the video that announced the polls for the best metal albums of 1987. Since you made that album a metal contender, I put it at #1. Otherwise, I would've picked Anthrax's Among the Living as #1 metal album.
So all you people who are negating Appetite's metal status, don't blame the voters; blame Sam Dunn (whom I respect, BTW, but HE DID list GNR's A4D as a metal contender, not me).
Two things... guns 'n roses is not a metal band... and I miss Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King.
AIS they are glam metal
Most overrated band ever.
Hard rock...something, not metal.
Abigail should be number 1!!
Agree
No King Diamond No Sepultura!
OK here's my top 5
1. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King
2. Candlemass - Nightfall
3. King Diamond - Abigail
4. Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
5. Testament - The Legacy
Thumbs up if you like my TOP5 more than the one from the video.
Death scream bloody gore ? More metal than hairspray and poses
Under the Sign of the Black Mark number 1
Love your list, I would only change it to Abigail in the top spot!
James West I agree
Leaving out Scream Bloody Gore is a crime... I mean it kicked off death metal...
Nice Faith No More shirt. Faith No More is awesome.
The lack of King Diamond really chaps my ass....
Helloweens timeless classic keeper of the seven keys pt 1 only gets three and a half out of five skulls? WTF!!! Its Five out of Five all the way. And no Abigail by King Diamond my fave album of 87 to boot,, disappointing.
King Diamond - Abigail
Death - SBG
Testament - The Legacy
Anthrax - ATL
....
Seems that everyone forgot the trashalbum of the year in1987. Exodus with Pleasures of the flesh?!
I mentioned Taking Over from Overkill in a comment above a couple years back, but yes, Pleasures From The Flesh is another classic. Gary Holt is up there with Hetfield as a riff writer, no doubt. The Ultra-Violence and Persecution Mania are also killer, ‘87 ruled for thrash.
Hail Exodus
Relax folks, don't get so wound up and take other people's best of lists so seriously. As always, these lists are subjective and at the end of the day, there really is no "best", it's just about what your, their, my favorite records are, but I digress. On another note, Jeff Becerra was still delivering vocals and growling just like Chuck at that time(or vice versa) Obviously they had very similar vocal styles and voices, just saying. But between Scream Bloody Gore and Eyes of Horror, well yeah, Chuck definitely created the stronger record that year IMO, and a hugely important one at that. All in all, great video and albums! DC
1. King Diamond Abigail
2. Testament The Legacy
3. Anthrax Among The Living
4. Death Scream Bloody Gore
5. Bathory Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Keeper Of The Seven Keys is just fuckin classic. I still have both parts on my local storage. It NEVER gets old...... \m/
Keeper of the Seven Keys deserves at least 4.5 skulls.... and why isn't Abigail up there?!?!?! Too much thrash ;)
OMFG Where's King Diamond's "Abigail"?? Both King más Andy Larocque at their finest.
Have to agree on Anthrax. That was one hell of an album. State of Euphoria was a total let down after that.
Terrible Certanty by Kreator, fucks G&R in all three holes at the same time
Testament ‘s the legacy what brutal album was it, can’t argue about it.
Manowar’s fighting the world?
Cacophony speed metal symphony?
GNR it isn’t metal but appetite for destruction, it is an amazing album
King Diamond ‘s Abigail, best king Diamond album of all times, gladly mentioned
Wait, what!? No "Abigail"??? Kick off GN'R! :(
what a crime!! Where's Sodom P.M?
Wilbeerthoven And Kreator's Terrible certainty? No German bands, no Coroner? Wtf?
localescariaco I wore terrible certainty out. flawless...what great times....17 years old....
Helloween is german. But I miss the german thrashers too.
Voivod - Killing Technology
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence
Heathen - Breaking the Silence
King Diamond - Abigail
Abigail
Black Sabbath The Eternal Idol
GNR metal no fucking way ...
No mention of
1. overkill- taking over
2. Death angel- the ultra violence
3. Voivod- killing technology
4. Kreator- terrible certainty
:( :(
King Diamond - Abigail
My own top5 1987
1. Voivod "Killing Technology"
2. Destruction "Release from Agony"
3. Holy Moses "Finished with the Dogs"
4. Living Death "Protected from Reality"
5. Coroner "R. I. P."
Without watching, I'm going to guess Anthrax: Among the Living.
Really? You claim the production is why testament isn't higher? I'm FUCKING SICK of the "huge" production. That old Testament sound is the height of thrash production because it's honest. Fuck fake drums, vintage 30's and the same 3 amps being used to get the current metal tones. I talk about that in my vid where I recreate Exodus's old(ish) tone: ua-cam.com/video/IsT8TINZ3u0/v-deo.html
Canadian metal was my highlight in 1987: Voivod “Killing Technology”, Sacrifice “Forward to Termination” and DBC “Dead Brain Cells”.
Yes, yes ,YES! DBC was my first metal show!
Shocking, no one on this channel is EVER bias toward Canada
I was 14 when Among the Living came out and I loved it. I was slowly creeping out of my metal phase at this point and getting back into punk (a couple favorites from that year were from Dinosaur and the Butthole Surfers) , but Charlie Benante's drumming is undeniably great. He is metal's most underrated drummer, hell, one of music's most underrated drummers. His work on Spreading the Disease and Speak English Or Die are unmatched.
Love the shirt! FNM is one of my all time favourites!
Shaun Kipke Mine too. Angel Dust is my favorite Faith No More album.
+Shaun kipke .Yeah man ! Introduce yourself is a mile stone in the history of alternative heavy rock .Chuck is a fucking legend !!
lol. Chuck is a burn out.
I'd put that album at least in my Top 5 of all time
Great vid! Do one for each 80s year up to 90. Abigail should have taken the GNR spot
GNR are not metal and never were.. wtf?
GNR are poser!
GNR were and are always Hard Rock and not Metal ... just like AC/DC
Couldn’t agree more! Compared to the other albums listed here, just 2nd rate 70s rehash. With some of the worst rock singing EVER!
Adi Ibukic bruh they’re glam metal
@@THEshaggyrogers which aint even metal LOL
I really liked this. You should do more of them for other years. 1980 was a good year for metal - so many classic albums that year
My top 5 of 1987:
Bathory - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Sepultura - Schitzophrenia
Testament - The Legacy
Exodus - Pleasures Of The Flesh
THAT is more like it
overkill - taking over
king diamond - abigail
G N R , is hard rock .
..well, I guess I'll have to check that "among the living" one more time as well...
Black Sabbath - The Eternal Idol, Dio - Dream Evil & Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King not even a mention?
Among the living was a staple in my cassette deck for sure!
THREE MEN AND A BABY IS A TIMELESS CLASSIC I'M UNSUBSCRIBING!
DEATH: SCREAM BLOODY GORE IS A MASTERPIECE ( along with Leprosy ),.
Where's the "Best Metal Albums of 1986 As Chose By You" then? I gave it a quick look on your channel, but did not find. I'll give it another look.
The Ultra-Violence from Death Angel deserves a spot on there.
I wish "Abigail" and "Hall of the Mountain King" had made the list.
I would have included KD Abigail in the proper list myself, but that's me I played the shit out of that record back in the day. This was back when we has album covers to look at while you were listening. As a matter of fact I have a tradition where I play that cd in its entirety every 7th of July. Of course I crank it other times as well. But Among The Living is awesome too!
I feel it's one of the greatest releases of all time. It's EVERYTHING Metal should be!
I was expecting Abigail to be on this list too
Abigail🤘
@@hvitekristesdod At #1 where it should've been!
I fucking love this fucking channel.
Personally, I'd go...
5. Death - "Scream Bloody Gore"
4. Sepultura - "Schizophrenia"
3. King Diamond - "Abigail"
2. Coroner - "R.I.P."
1. Sodom - "Persecution Mania"
And honourable mentions to "Forward to Termination" by Sacrifice, "The Ultra-Violence" by Death Angel, "Crossover" by D.R.I., "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" by Bathory, "Taking Over" by Overkill, and "Release from Agony" by Destruction
1986 though, the best year thrash, that'd be a cool episode!
Reign in Blood, Master of Puppets, Peace Sells, Doomsday for the Deceiver. Dude, what was in the water? :D
can't complain about the list since is popular vote... but c'mon Sam that review fro "keeper" was quite unfair. (even tho is your opinion therefore there's no "fair, its just how i feel")
Carlzdash I second your feeling. keeper is the most important record on power metal. period. I know Sam is not a fan of power metal; but hey come on! maybe being bias there?
well of course it's biased, it's his opinion. I just think it should've gotten more credit for relevancy, even if Sam didn't like the genre
Carlzdash sure that's my point as well. out those 5 I will argue keeper and scream have the most legacy. But hey it's just a popular vote and his opinion so no blame to anybody.
A lot of great records from 87, but no Hall of The Mountain King by Savatage? Easily THE BEST album that came out that year, WAAY better than Anthrax or GnR. Also, special shout out to Dokken's Back For The Attack (Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's "Hair Metal" but fuck off it's a great record)
HELL-O-WEEEEEEEEEN
Among the living is one of my favorite metal albums ever
Scream bloody gore
1. King Diamond - Abigail
2. OverKill - Taking Over
3. Tankard - Chemical Invasion
4. Kreator - Terrible Certainty
5. Toss up between Death & Sodom.
Abigail out of the top 5 is a travesty! Testament's debut shouldn't be on the list, there are better records than that.
Aris Panagiotopoulos it started off great. but I think it lost steam.... I think testament is overrated
1. Pleasures of the Flesh- Exodus 2. Abigail- King Diamond 3. Among the Living- Anthrax 4. Taking Over- Overkill 5. The Legacy- Testament Honorable mention- NIghtfall- Candlemass, Killing Technology- VoiVod, Scream Bloody Gore- Death, Keeper of the Seven Keys- Helloween, Schizophrenia- Sepultura, Know Your Enemy- Laaz Rockit, Terrible Certainty- Kreator, Death Angel- The Ultra Violence, and Hall of the Mountain King- Savatage.
GNR is hard rock not metal
def leopards hysteria was the number one in 1987
Def Leppard Hysteria might have topped the charts but it's a stretch calling it metal.
The first three Def Leppard lps were the best
It was released in August of 87, but it really didn’t hit its stride in the charts until 88.
Steve Clarke was a beast
GnR is a great rock album that stole a spot on this list from Death Angel!!!
Excellent episode Sam! Maybe you could do more shows like this one. It would be interesting hearing current perspectives on the classic albums of yesterday.
Thanks David. As long as you guys are prepared to vote, we'll be making more!
1992 perhaps, like 25 years ago. So many balling releases Megadeth, Testament, Darkthrone, Imortal, Brutal Truth, Kyuss, Exhorder, Fear Factory, Pantera, Maiden, Ministry, NIN, Canible Corpse, Deicide, Faith No More, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, Napalm Death, Tool, White Zombie, Therapy. would be intresting to see what people would vote for as like groove, death, black, stooner, alt and industrial were all at their hight at the time
Maybe I’m being picky. But. I don’t think that appetite is a metal album. Hard rock. Definitely. Not metal. Testament is metal. They’re such a bad ass band. Death is most definitely metal. But your #1 ANTHRAX!! They helped to shape my guitar sound. Still one of my all time favorites
U mean to tell me Abigail isn’t on there imo the best metal album from 87 are
Abigail
Scream bloody gore
Among the living
The legacy
Hall of the mtn king
Abigail
Abigail
production here.... production there.. and suddenly everything sounds like plastic. i'm hating to even think about this but imagine for example a new DEATH album in 2017..i bet it would sounds like a generic technical death metal thing. Soulless.
i just miss that Real sound, those songs, those records we all love.
Srsly no King Diamond "Abigail"? That sucks.
Wait Sam, you´re rating an album in terms of how its production sounds in 2017? How they are "holding up" after 30 years? What the fuck is wrong with you? This is why the term CLASSIC was invented.
All 4 albums are 5 stars in my opinion. All this albums were crucial in my life as a pre-teen/teenager. They are that fucking important.
King Diamond Abigail is my favorite.
While I don't agree with a couple picks in this list, I'm not going to bitch about it like most of you did.
My honorable mentions:
Overkill - Taking Over
Savatage - The Hall of the Mountain King
Exodus - Pleasures of the Flesh
Kreator - Terrible Certainty
Thrash 'til death!!
