  • In this video, I give you a 10-month update on the durability of a ceramic coating I applied to my brand new BMW. It’s a ceramic coating that is supposed to last up to 2 years so we will see how well it stood the test of time and we’ll also do a torture test by applying different chemicals to see if we can damage the ceramic coating.

    Thank you, great tutorials and infos. You look very much at ease, natural. One question I have: when it's time to strip the coating off, is it really useful to clay prior to compounding? Pretty tedious job that won't compare in intensity with the following step, imo...

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  4 роки тому +1

      If you have contamination in the paint (gritty surface, sand paper like texture) then yes you should clay before polishing, as you don't want to be picking up all the contamination with the polishing pads and making more damage. It would defeat the purpose.

    Is it really worth a ceramic coating if you have to maintain it? What's the advantage over synthetic wax/sealer in that case?

      Higher pH resistance to chemicals, better UV protection, higher gloss, much greater durability, self-cleaning properties, etc. In my opinion, ceramic coatings are the best form of paint protection period.

    G'day Pan, It doesn't seem that long ago you bought the BMW, time fly's. Thanks for putting your car up for the torture test. As you mentioned the other week the importance of a maintenance wash every 2 -3 months, in that video you used Car Pro Reload which is made for ceramic coatings, to help protect and give a extra layer of protection. During the normal washes you could use a drying aide such as Bead Maker or another product that gives another layer of protection in between the maintenance wash.
    How often should a car with ceramic coating be treated with an Iron removal, especially if the car is outside 24/7?
    Cheers Mate, Oz

    • @PanTheOrganizer

    Can you test bottom part of your doors? here in Toronto the sides of my car is no longer beading due to the winter. I have cleaned it properly with iron remover and so on but it looks like I need to reapply. Also how many kms did you put on your car since June? Was it parked outside or in the garage? That will all have a factor on the life of the coating.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  5 років тому +1

      Did you try using a more powerful ceramic coating specific soap like CarPro Reset? To all my viewers who have your issues, I noticed that they typically use a lesser quality soap or something that doesn't remove the light film that build up over time in the lower panels. Gtechniq G Wash is also another good soap for that.

    • @bryanviper
      @bryanviper 5 років тому

      @@PanTheOrganizer yes so what I did was wash with Reset twice, which helped a little bit. I even tried using a degreaser on it but nothing. The lower parts of the door have little to no beading left. Im going to have to re coat it this spring and will try Gtechniq instead. But I'm curious if yours lasted? How many kms did you put on it, did you drive it through the winter?

    Nice and informative video Pan. I was waiting for this one to come out. I coated my now year-old SUV, daily driver back in September with Fusso Coat and I've been using sonax BSD as a drying aid ever since. This combo gives tons of protection against contaminants and extreme water repellency. I used a PH neutral iron remover a few weeks ago and the contamination was minimal. Today I used Sonax tar remover very gently to remove the tiny spots around the lower end of the car using a MF pad and 90% came off without having to use any pressure. I'm very confident Fusso plus BSD provide outstanding level of protection. Most of the times I just use a power wash to clean the car, no soap required. I drive 10K/miles per year, mostly on rural/A roads. Keep up the good work! 👍🇬🇧

    How can know that the coating is completely removed after compound and polishing stage? Will a simple water test be enough?

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  5 років тому +15

      Thanks! Yes if you properly removed the coating, the water should be sheeting veeeeery slowly and kind of pool up on the hood and zero beads. The paint should also feel very "grabby" at that point as there is no more slickness from a paint protection product.

      @NicholasChan23 5 років тому +6

      @@PanTheOrganizer Thanks Pan. I guess a follow-up question is should one be bothered with fully removing the old compound before reapplying a fresh coat. Would a polish just to remove swirl marks and minor scratches be sufficient. For those of us who are inexperienced, I guess you don't want to go overboard with removing the ceramic coat and end up removing clear coat.

      @@NicholasChan23 a polishing stage is designed to remove minor scratches and haze leftover by the compounding stage. So it should be more than enough. And as for being afraid of removing clear coat or too much of it, you should invest in a paint depth gauge. You can get a decent one online for 50 bucks. Measure how much paint is left on all body panels before you compound + polish and after to get a good idea on how much old coating + clear coat you're removing. Be sure to measure how much paint you have on the hood before you apply your new coating so that you have a good reference point on how much depth you should come down to when it's time machine polish off your new coating in the future :)

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for the kind words Henry!
      To answer your question, the ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat of painted surfaces. So on factory painted bumpers, they have a clear coat so the ceramic can bond to it.
      If you talking about black plastic bumpers, then they have coatings for those too. CarPro has the DLUX wheel and trim coating. Gyeon has their Trim coating.

    Excellent 10 month ceramic review and I really appreciate the steps at the end for taking off a ceramic coating. I have one of these on my Corvette and have Rejex on my 15 BMW 750Li M as I wanted to do a comparison on slickness, shine and beeding. Definitely both look insanely great, however, a ton less work on buffing using ceramic over Rejex. So I will probably be doing the C Quartz on BMW in 8 months or so and keeping with the Gyeon ceramic on the Corvette. Then compare those two. Again, thanks for steps on removing ceramic, I will bookmark this vid to refer back when ready to remove. Thanks Pan! Best, Tom

Thank you pan appreciate it

    • @PanTheOrganizer

      It’s too late for a 2nd coat now. You have to apply the 2nd coat one hour after the first one. Don’t worry too much about it as the 2nd coat is mainly to ensure proper coverage over the paintwork. If you took your time to apply a nice and even coat you should be fine.

There is no hydrophobicity and no ease in cleaning as it was before. I know I applied it correctly because initial results were exactly as expected. Can you suggest what went wrong? I have cq 3.0 and 1 layer gliss and 1 layer of reload, bird sh*t stayed for 2days on the hood (I wasn't close to the car), and there are stains.
    So, whatever they are advertising, it is not sh*t proof. Obviously ph was too high...

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  5 років тому +1

      Bird droppings that are left unattended often will etch through any paint protectant. It’s not that a coating isn’t good. It’s the combination of the acid nature of the dropping also acting like a magnifying glass on the surface combined to the sun baking that and the surface gets super hot. You can easily polish that with CarPro Essence+.
      And a bird dropping is more acidic so that means the pH is lower (not higher, as a high pH would be basic).

    • @SuperTrlababalan
      @SuperTrlababalan 5 років тому

      @@PanTheOrganizer I didn't say c. coatings are not good, just my experience.

    Hi Pan:
    I was wondering if you have any advice / knowledge as to whether you should put ceramic coating over your sensors for radar cruise / parking?
    My first inclination is to not coat them because I don’t want to affect their performance in any way, but at the same time I’d love for them to have the protective/cleanliness benefits of being coated.
    I’m planning to follow your new car detail, then coat with 2 coats of Carpro CQuartz UK, then one or two coats of Carpro Gliss, and maintain with P&S Beadmaker. Hopefully that’ll provide me with some nice protection and gloss for a good while.

    Pan! serious question. I detail for clients and I’ve used carpro cquarts on a clients vehicle. It works great and I maintenance the coating regularly with reload. The client is getting ready to add more ceramic. You said a compound and polish will remove it? I spoke with a carpro rep over email and they said a very heavy compound such as clear cut would be required with an abrasive cut equivalent to 1000 grit and a microfiber pad to remove a coating. Is this what you used or do you have a preference? Also another client whose ceramic I maintenance we did a polish on his hood to remove some scratches from what looked like a back pack or purse from rubbing it and it appears to have removed the coating. I personally think it may be the polish oils left on the hood that got in the way of the fresh reload application we applied directly after. What are your thoughts?

    • @taylorweick8688
      @taylorweick8688 5 років тому

      The second client we specifically used v38 polish with a foam pad to remove the light scratches. I doubt this would cut enough to remove the coating? Likely just the silica sealant in my opinion.

    One question. If you going to be polishing (and maybe compounding) every two years to prep for the new ceramic coating and that "eats" through the clear coat, how long would the clear coat last on average before you have to redo the clear coat. Is this a concern? That you "cutting" every two years into your clear coat.

    • @PanTheOrganizer
      @PanTheOrganizer  4 роки тому

      If you had a brand new car, and only polish once every two years, you don't have to worry about your clear coat as that won't be removing much material. What I don't recommend is a heavy compound and polish every two months lol.

    I feel like it would've been more informative if you showed the side lower panels of the car. Those see the most dirt, and in my experience ceramic coatings fail the most there. Also with weekly washes (like you do) a ceramic coating will last longer, which is not realistic for everyone. A car that is washed every few weeks gives a better idea of the longevity of a ceramic coating in real life. Great video otherwise!

    In my own experience, the original cquartz is a lot better than the 3.0
    I used both on my car and windshield and i am disappointed in 3.0. Yes it works but the original was a lot better. I did a test on my hood where i applied cquartz on half the hood and once a year nu finish wax on the other side. I had it for a while then got into an accident so got a new hood and had to redo the test but this time i had the 3.0 and re applied it the same way. What i saw this time that the water spots on the hood in the morning ( humid flordia) roll off a lot less compared to the old cquartz. I saw the effect and comparison between the ceramic coat vs the wax every day because i see my hood when i drive and i was always amazed how much water rolls off from the ceramic coat side just be driving the car ) compared to the wax side. Now with the 3.0 its almost the same. Also have it on my windshields and i can tell you that while is working pretty good its a lot less hydrophobic compared the original cquartz.

      3.0 is the updated version of CQUK. Very similar, just not always available on Amazon in Canada.

    So could u put the car in a gas station car washes since the soaps tend to be more aggressive, could it harm the coating?

      Typically, ceramic coatings resist chemicals up to pH 12 so they resist chemicals waaaay more than waxes or sealants. You should be fine although I still prefer a good manual car wash with a quality pH neutral shampoo.

    Hi Pan, I love your channel. I wanted to say that i feel like the ceramic coating was actually performing better after the iron remover and degreaser cleaned the ceramic coating. Maybe it's just in my head but I thought that was interesting.

      You're actually right. Over time, there is a buildup of grime and road film on paintwork that pH neutral shampoos can't remove. So degreasers or even iron removers help lift that "film" and reveal the true hydrophobic properties of the coating.

      @@PanTheOrganizer I'm not sure. I recently bought a black BMW and wanted to know how to take care of the paint since I live in super sunny Arizona so I've been searching a lot of car detailing videos lately and I think your detail of a black M3 came up pretty quickly for me. Some of your videos may have also been suggested from other automotive repair and automotive detailing channels and videos. I found this particular video while researching ceramic coatings and I think you're the only youtuber to post an update so I was pretty excited to see how it held up. Thank you for posting such informative videos btw

    Not sure if Ferrex and Power Clean are just sprayed on and sprayed off in real life, so a contact wash with them would have been interesting to observe.
