Loved Loot and think it would be perfect for tired brains. (Don't worry about the boat.)
Blimey indeed, Ours sounds fascinating. Am a door stopper fan, how it can be a reading adventure to "live" with characters and places in a novel for a little longer.
Fifteen Wild Decembers is one of the lovely books I've treated my lovely self to recently. Have yet to read it. Was bitten by the Brontë bug at a tender age through Wuthering Heights. It was love at first read.

Loot I would definitely like to get to before the end of the year. Though am wondering if I should read The Tusk That Did The Damage first? Hmmm. Ours I might head to in early January as I am planning on taking a few weeks off just to get into the swing of the new year. Always good to treat your lovely self to lovely books.

Catherine Chidgley is a great author and Pet really gets the New Zealand vibe (I’m a kiwi so qualified to opine haha) but my favourite of hers is definitely Remote Sympathy.

These Sunday videos are such a treat because you keep me company while I’m cooking dinner! I’ve also just read Blackouts and am quite keen to read Orbital (it’s not out here yet). And I was sent a proof of Clear which made my week! Very excited for next year’s Savidge Prompts (must make time for my November and December picks) and for the new WP nonfiction list as well as the fiction list. Am happy to learn about upcoming releases no matter how far in the future they might be. And your tangents are always a delight!

Scott from Gunpowder Fiction and Plot raved about Immortal King Rao, IIRC, and it was up against Trust/Demon Copperhead for whichever prize those both won.
Hah! I recommended Three Fires to your mum a couple weeks back. I think you'll like it as well, very sharp look historically at the effects of men behaving badly from a modern eye view.

    Hi Simon
Books about astronauts that are not overly sci-fi
Do You Dream of Terra-Two by Temi Oh - a group of teenagers are chosen to train to be astronauts for a decades long voyage. It looks at their relationships and how they manage the stress of the expectations.
The Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal starting with The Calculating Stars. This is a alternate history of the US Space program if women and PoC were included. The early 60’s setting is exceptional. I started with the short story The Lady Astronaut of Mars and I fell in Love. The space race with gender and racial politics thrown in.

I read Pet in October bc I thought it would be a different, but applicable candidate for spooky season ( it was) & it was your ma who sparked my interest.
I personally like hearing about books in any length of advance . Sometimes I get 2 birds w one scone exited that way bc I forget if it’s been hella advance notice & then excited all over again later.
I really liked Once There Were Wolves, but I’m obsessed w wolves and coyotes so came into biased .

As for spacey books I wonder if you've read The Hail Mary Project - it does have an alien but he's quite lovely. Our whole family listened to it and we all loved it and have got very different reading likes. Oh 'Remembrance' love that poem by Emily Bronte might need to have a look at that book. Ah Jane Harper - yes must get that one. Mind you I am still hooked on the Rivers of London ones and can't read anything else until I've finished that series. Love Careys Davis! Maupin sounds interesting too. I hope in your Australian order you picked up Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton (loved it, it's a favourite this year). I'm reading Stone yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood and I'm afraid it isn't The Weekend, Stone yard is interesting but so slow going, it keeps putting me to sleep....I really need to pick up Once there was wolves from my bookshelf, too many new releases from the library keep coming my way.

    • @SavidgeReads
      @SavidgeReads  8 місяців тому +1

I didn’t get the Dalton no. I haven’t read any of his books yet and the price of your books (and the shipping) even with a good conversion rate it made. Also, in the nice possible way I have to ask, why did you tell me that about Stone Yard Devotional. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people slate a book someone’s excited to read and hasn’t picked up yet. I don’t know why people do it. I even ask people not to do it at the end of my videos.

@@SavidgeReads sorry Simon, I must stop tired commenting. I only meant to say Stoneyard was a slow read, it came off as a derogatory comment about the book, when I didn't intend it to be. I'm still reading it and becoming more involved with the writing as I go. As said, it's an interesting book. Falling asleep is more about not as many hours in the day as required and I just thought The Weekend was quite a quick read.
Jokingly, you know I'm not personally responsible for the cost of Aussie books, lol. Have you seen that the GBP v Aussie dollar conversion rate? Anything sold in GBP I have to double the Aussie $$ to buy. A 10 pound British book would cost me $20. Shipping costs kill us here too, we are a wee distance away. Since the pandemic, shipping can be 40 pounds or $80. Makes a 10 pound book, $90., to get into my hot little hands. If only ebooks were more fun to read, it would at least cut down on shipping costs. I love the feel of a real book 🙂

I love deckled edges because they do not throw you off your page when turning, my only complaint about my American Viking hardcover edition of The Searcher by Tana French, the pages consistently skipped pages on turning, maybe I need to order an old fashioned rubber finger tip cover for turning pages. Mona of the Manor goes on the list. Best normal people in space Andy Weir's The Martian and the newer Artemis book, which was supposed to be made into a movie, but that was before shutdowns. I feel sorry for young actors because their careers may be over before things get back to normal, oh well, don't give up the day jobs, "more tea please." They just want to work while they are alive, being paid after they are dead is not a big issue for them.😅 Give us a break, at the present state of the world, we need some entertainment and movies made during 2020 were punishent enough to last several years. Get back to the bargaining table in good faith and reach an agreeent.

Oooh hooray a fellow deckled edge lover. I do really love them so much. I read The Martian and wasn't a fan, it felt like all the female characters were one dimensional and superfluous, for me. The Misogynistic Martian is what I called it hahahaha. Fingers crossed things turn around with the entertainment industry.

@@SavidgeReads Maybe that's why the main character in Artemis was a strong female. It is true that I don't remember anyfemale character in The Martian. The Space Book I tried tor read was Brightness Falls from the Stars, probably wrong title, by James Tiptree, Jr. (really written bya woman), it was not a success, too much ichy factor, same with Changing Planes by Ursula Leguin, ichy aliens. The Strike ended at midnight, now make some movies!

Did I just actually hear a Brit say blimey?! You mean it doesn’t just happen in books?! Eeeeee…. 😂
    Book prompts…
A book with a disabled protagonist
A cover with a flower on it
A book with colored edge pages
A book with an animal in the title
A cover you really, really don’t like
A cover that you love so much you want to display it
    Book by an indigenous author

I have popped a couple of these in the jar, couldn't do them all as might be a bit unfair on everyone else, loved them all though.

How about reading a book published in the best year of your life? Also could do a book published in the worst year of your life….if it turns out to be amazing, then at least one thing about that year has been redeemed 😅

Ha. I wouldn’t have read the book in the worst year. Also I know what both mum and my worst years might be and I’m not sure we’d want to go back there mentally. Best year of my life… ooh that’s a tough one. I feel like every year gets better and the best is yet to come.

I'm not into Alien plots either, i find them boring.

I don’t know if I would describe them as boring. I think my brain just can’t envisage a lot of it. Which is odd because I bloody love Doctor Who, I guess that’s a visual thing though.

Ooh, I love Doctor Who too, but I haven’t watched it lately.
