Zak, we have had several puppies before, and raised them to be very well trained as they got older. We have a 4 month old puppy that just absolutely refuses to learn.
We pad trained her, which she doesn't use if it's too inconvenient for her. She constantly bites, even after a month of training her not to (using your method). We tried crate training her, but every time we put her in the crate she poops after a few minutes. And 'no' means absolutely nothing to her. We always have to tell her not to do certain things multiple times even after just telling her off. We've bought many different types of toys to keep her occupied from chewing on everything else, but she plays with her toys for a couple minutes and then goes back to chewing stuff she shouldn't be.
We're really at a loss about what to do! She's a malamute mix. This is our third arctic breed. We've never had these problems before

I'm a 12 year old girl from Finland and I have a border terrier called Aston. I got him when I was 10 and since then I have been training him by myself. I trained my dog to take treats nicely by basically showing him the treat putting closer to his nose and then saying no and then put it closer and then give it to him and now his great! He will be 3 years old on halloween btw. And currently we are working on avoiding other dogs when walking outside and he is doing good but he just gets too excited around other dogs but I believe in him and I know we can do it:))

I taught all our dogs to take treats gently, but they are 11-13 years old. Now, we adopted a Olde English Bulldog mix, when we took him in he was half starved. Been 8 months, but he is still quite a shark when it comes to treats. In fact, hubby was trying to work with him earlier and got his finger bit, the first time he has actually bit anyone. That and his over excitement when we come in from being outside are his only two vices.

    • @fyrnarose5903

NOOB you should try doing recall outside of the dog park where your dog can see the other dogs but is still able to focus on you and slowly get closer to build his tolerance around the other dogs. make sure you give alot of treats if he is listening and try going further away if its getting too hard for him

This is great! My dog Joy is guilty of taking treats too fast sometimes so this should help! The 2 minute commercial at first was a bit too distracting though. I like your enthusiasm and willingness to support great products, but work on making your presentation more short and sweet. Otherwise your more clever followers are just going to skip through it and your promotion will fail. I really admire you Zak! Keep up the good work!

I rescued a black Lab at 18 months old. He is now 5 years old. He was left in the woods without any training. He did what he wanted when he wanted. He knew nothing when I brought him home. He was a Tasmanian devil. He had to learn his name, then sit, give paw, down and walking on leash, "reasonably" well. He has come a long way. He is loud and pushy. He is happy and playful. His biggest problem at the moment is car etiquette. I take frequent, 5 hour road trips. He barks, cries and whines the whole way. When we stop for gas or slow down in traffic he gets worse. What can I do to make him quiet down? He is my second lab. My first just passed at 12. He was my perfect angel. His parents were guide dogs for the blind but he was fearful and did not make it. He was serious and excellent in every way as long as he was with me. I know that dogs are like people that they have their own personality. Harley, the young lab had a late start at learning. He is doing well and I forgot to mention that he looks at me when asked. I need help with him in the car. He starts barking the second we close the door. He weighs 100 lbs. he cannot be forced into anything. He needs to learn. How do I teach car etiquette?

  • @mrahzzz

I never thought to teach this. Didn't realize how nice of a feature it was until we got a dog who seems to possibly have a "soft mouth" breed/trait background.
Compared to our previous dogs, he has always naturally taken treats like Catholics take Communion from the Pope - at his gentlest, he just kind of opens his mouth slightly and lets you set it down inside his mouth, then he gently closes 😂

    You are amazing Zak,
My dog is high energy. When I take him to off leash dog park, most of the dogs are just standing in one place! my dog tries to play "chase me" with them. But they are not interested! So he does small bite and run to make the other guys chase him. He is not aggressive at all and I know he won't hurt any dog by that. But I am not sure if other owners are comfortable! So here are my options:
    1) Don't do anything. Anyone doesn't like that can go home!
    2) Teach him not to bite other dogs (I don't know how. There are 5-10 dogs are around). Therefore no running around. Just stand in one place like the other dogs!
    3) Don't take him to dog park.
    Thanks,

After my Cavalier eats he always scratches at a closet that use to have his toys. Even though they aren't in the closet and I show him nothing is in there he continues to scratch. He still does on days we go to the dog park or bike around, so I don't think it is a matter of excess energy. If it matters he only does this after he eats dinner, he is still intact, and he is raw fed. Halp! My landlord wont be pleased with the scratches on the closet haha.Thank you.

Katie Johnson she is ok with me and people in my building that played with her while she was little but when we.are walking when a person stops to pet her she hides behind me and starts barking
      She is 11 months old

    • @Katie_Jo_21
      @Katie_Jo_21 7 років тому

Adna Prutina Indeed, I feel your pain. I am training my Vizsla to be a guide and forward momentum service dog. I have experience with horses but I have never trained dog's officially before. I got my 2 year old as a rescue at almost 6 months old. He was very ill, and lucky to be alive. I am unsure of his history other than neglect. He is bonded to me and my people. But in public he shakes and hides behind my leg a little with most new people. I have held his collar and let others pet him for a minimum time frame (so not overwhelm him) and that was not terribly effective. ... I have others lean down and don't make eye contact and sometimes treat him (with the treats I have a course). And it helps but the problem is still there. I sadly have no perfect answer except patience, love, and tons of time .... every week he def. makes small improvements. Be careful not to let the puppy bark or growl by making an immediate distraction and soothing voice correction to avoid any fear aggression. I agree def. A tough subject a lot of folks deal with....I know what does not work ... but hard to find what does as each puppy is unique. ....

I adopted a dog with serious biting issues. It took 2 days before I could pet him. Now he bites my friend and my sister if they are to close to me or move to fast. Zak do you have a video on this . This dog, Benjamin, was most likely abused by a man. He is 7 or 8 years old. He was going to be put down by the pound but Broken Tail Rescue here in Massachusetts took him in. He is improving with barking and trying to attack people when we walk, but is going to have to wear a muzzle when people are in my apt. It is more a matter of training me how to correct this.

Zak. I have a 5 month old pup. My wife wants to bring his crate into our bedroom. Is that a good idea? We just got him a week ago and he only knows a few basic commands. I want to make sure we are not setting ourselves up to fail with a bad habit

We just recently brought a puppy home from the shelter. She is annoyingly cute and delightful all at the same time. We love her! We are living in a country where dogs will often be poisoned by meat being thrown over the wall for the dog so that the house will be easier to be broken into. We are therefore trying to teach her not to take food from anyone other than the family or her food bowl. However, she is such a scrounger of note! How do we teach her not to scrounge (like the compost, for example)? Your "Leave it alone" video is helpful, but could you please address the scrounging specifically due to the risk of poisoning?

My 9 year old lab mix LOVES her ball to OBSESSION... she has only been in my family for 5 years but her previous owners took time to put her through advance training, and she does very well with commands. Except where the ball is concerned, we can tell her no or go lay down, and she will, but only for a few seconds before bringing the ball back to be thrown again... she could go ALL day! My son will sometimes get frustrated and hide all the balls from her, but then she just brings us a rock... lol any suggestions?

Hi Zak! I've been watching a lot of your videos, and I noticed that while you have mentioned it a lot while training Inertia, you haven't explained how to actually train it: teaching bite pressure so they learn to bite gently in play. Could you do a vido on this?

I have been training a Chihuahua mix terrier puppy and he is doing great but sometimes he doesn't follow a lure to a new trick such as heel. That's the only problem! Can you make a video on that's concept?

Please please do a video on shy dogs who aren't food motivated! My little puppy is scared to leave the house. I've brought boiled turkey out on walks and he just won't eat them because he's overwhelmed

Suzanne Goh I feel your pain. I had that issue with my rescue puppy once he got healthy. Does your pup have a favorite you yet?

Suzanne Goh Also, if you go through Zaks old videos, he did one on "how to teach fetch" He talks about toy motivation, and it helped me with my shy (non treat eating) pup quite a bit. Hugs.

I love your videos! I got a new puppy a month ago, and your videos has helped me to communicate better and to be patient with her. But, I do have a question: you have said in your videos that playing fetch is all about having a connection with your dog, so what are your thougths on automatic ball launchers? If I learn my dog to use it alone, is it a good way for her to exercise, or do you think that human interactions is always necessary?
