Ethel's musical aesthetic screams nuance. I feel like if someone is going to attack her for some americana aesthetic it says more about themselves than her. This was such a tough and complex topic for her to talk about but her message of love and appreciation came across clearly. I discovered Ethel Cain by complete accident. I am currently at my parent’s house for the first time in over 15 years. My dad was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. I’m the first born in a very religious household. I was kicked out of our religious bubble when I made the choice not to change myself to fit my parents expectations. On the drive down, I heard American Teenager. It spoke to me, being part of the LGBTQ community. It was straight up a religious experience for me. I’m obsessed and hungry for more.

I’ve always had a fondness for Americana “aesthetic” and I think this “aesthetic” is one that can only be used in some form of seriousness. If you use this type of style with a sense of casualness it comes across as ignorant to the actions that were and still are made by the very country who developed it. Such an articulate person, I love her so much and it was so important for her to speak on this!

As her story gets darker, i’m trying to get healthier and stronger.” So it’s partially autobiographical but not completely. Like, several songs may be dark in nature and centered around kidnapping and murder even though that isn’t something Hayden herself experienced, more so just a way of expressing deeper fears and trauma.

Not wanting to be an echo in the chamber however I totally agree with your comment that you sent in the live. I think it's important to allow for nuance in the consumption of art as well as not assume that because someone has white privilege that they are unaware that they do and assume they don't "check" or acknowledge their privilege. You can be white and also be an ally to people of color. You can be a trans women and be pro choice and an ally to people who the overturn of roe v wade directly effects. I respect Haydens' choice to change the direction of her art because it is hers but I don't think that if she hadn't made a statement about said change or made the change itself that would've equated to bad allyship or her art somehow erasing or taking away from the experiences of others peoples oppression.
I think you can express your experiences and your aesthetics in any way you choose and see fit. You can’t speak of or to the experiences of others especially through the venue of art especially “Americana” which is entirely unique to all the factors involved in your upbringing. Black southern Americana is different than northeastern coastal Americana which is different than LA county Hispanic Americana.
I can't believe she even felt the need to say this. Do people not hear the sarcasm in some of her lyrics? The South has a lot of natural beauty and it can be really peaceful but there's no doubt racism and homophobia here. Just because she is white doesn't mean she isn't allowed to share her experience and her own struggles. Every piece of art doesn't have to be some commentary on social justice. Anyone complaining about her needs to give the album another listen. To me, Ethel Cain and everything that happened to her is a reflection of some of the worst parts of southern culture. In my opinion, she is definitely aware of the injustice that happens here, but her art doesn't always need to highlight every aspect of it.

Man, once again it hits home that I'm almost as old as the youngest Boomers though I'm GenX. Until now I was enjoy the interesting and ambient and powerful songs and considered them to be much more broad than trans experience or life in the south of the USA. In fact, I'm Canadian and just now learned that Ethel is trans. This will add much more impact to already impactful messages and music. I love the ethics and universal concerns. It's healthy and needed today (as always.)

I thought the character Ethel Cain was trans but that Hayden was biologically female, I'm fairly new to her music but isn't her father like some baptist minister? So I'm not quite sure how her transitioning as a teenager or younger would have been accepted by her family due to religious reasons etc, like getting hormone treatment/puberty blockers etc, no offence meant to anyone, I'm just thinking out loud really.

Again I don't mean this in an offensive way to anyone, I just don't know anyone who is trans so have no one else to ask but wouldn't a genetically male trans person have to start some kind of hormone treatment/puberty blocker to stop their voice from breaking etc as they entered puberty? The reason I ask is that her voice very specifically sounds female to me anyway, and it just seems if she started transitioning say, for example around the age of 18 when she legally became an adult it would have been too late to begin any hormone type treatments to stop her voice from breaking etc, due to her strict Christian upbringing (I'm making an assumption here as I believe her father is a baptist minister and wouldn't have been open at all to the idea of having a trans child, therefore not allowing her to begin hormone/puberty blocker treatment while still a minor) That's the part that confuses me I guess, but like I said I totally hold my hands up in the sense that I don't know anything really about how one begins to transition in a medical/practical sense and anything I've asked wasn't meant to offend anyone at all I just know very little about the practical aspects of it I guess, thanks for taking the time to answer my question anyway though, it's much appreciated 🙂

As her story gets darker, i’m trying to get healthier and stronger.” So it’s partially autobiographical but not completely. Like, several songs may be dark in nature and centered around kidnapping and murder even though that isn’t something Hayden herself experienced, more so just a way of expressing deeper fears and trauma.

Not wanting to be an echo in the chamber however I totally agree with your comment that you sent in the live. I think it's important to allow for nuance in the consumption of art as well as not assume that because someone has white privilege that they are unaware that they do and assume they don't "check" or acknowledge their privilege. You can be white and also be an ally to people of color. You can be a trans women and be pro choice and an ally to people who the overturn of roe v wade directly effects. I respect Haydens' choice to change the direction of her art because it is hers but I don't think that if she hadn't made a statement about said change or made the change itself that would've equated to bad allyship or her art somehow erasing or taking away from the experiences of others peoples oppression.

You can’t speak of or to the experiences of others especially through the venue of art especially “Americana” which is entirely unique to all the factors involved in your upbringing. I can't believe she even felt the need to say this. Do people not hear the sarcasm in some of her lyrics? The South has a lot of natural beauty and it can be really peaceful but there's no doubt racism and homophobia here. Just because she is white doesn't mean she isn't allowed to share her experience and her own struggles. Every piece of art doesn't have to be some commentary on social justice. Anyone complaining about her needs to give the album another listen. To me, Ethel Cain and everything that happened to her is a reflection of some of the worst parts of southern culture. In my opinion, she is definitely aware of the injustice that happens here, but her art doesn't always need to highlight every aspect of it.

Man, once again it hits home that I'm almost as old as the youngest Boomers though I'm GenX. Until now I was enjoy the interesting and ambient and powerful songs and considered them to be much more broad than trans experience or life in the south of the USA. In fact, I'm Canadian and just now learned that Ethel is trans. This will add much more impact to already impactful messages and music. I love the ethics and universal concerns. It's healthy and needed today (as always.)

I thought the character Ethel Cain was trans but that Hayden was biologically female, I'm fairly new to her music but isn't her father like some baptist minister? So I'm not quite sure how her transitioning as a teenager or younger would have been accepted by her family due to religious reasons etc, like getting hormone treatment/puberty blockers etc, no offence meant to anyone, I'm just thinking out loud really.

but wouldn't a genetically male trans person have to start some kind of hormone treatment/puberty blocker to stop their voice from breaking etc as they entered puberty?
The reason I ask is that her voice very specifically sounds female to me anyway, and it just seems if she started transitioning say, for example around the age of 18 when she legally became an adult it would have been too late to begin any hormone type treatments to stop her voice from breaking etc, due to her strict Christian upbringing (I'm making an assumption here as I believe her father is a baptist minister and wouldn't have been open at all to the idea of having a trans child, therefore not allowing her to begin hormone/puberty blocker treatment while still a minor)
That's the part that confuses me I guess, but like I said I totally hold my hands up in the sense that I don't know anything really about how one begins to transition in a medical/practical sense and anything I've asked wasn't meant to offend anyone at all

Keeping it vague seems to be Hayden's style and it works in a poetic way but not if you're trying to promote an ideal. As many famous artists have said, they prefer the audience to interpret the art for themselves. The woke nonsense just alienates people. It is inherently divisive. If what you're preaching emphasizes the otherness in others you are part of the sickness, not the cure.

If you're MTF then you'd probably prefer gay men to straight, but you look like a pretty girl, so straight men might show interest, but then flake out when in close proximity. the person you are talking about sounds from your description like a trans woman who doesn’t quite “pass” as female, and your question i think is basically “if i as a straight man am not attracted to this person, and gay guys wouldn’t be either, where does that leave them?” well my answer would be that this is a struggle for a lot of trans women who, either out of bad luck or lack of financial resources for surgeries/hormones, don’t pass enough as female for straight men to be interested in dating them. but these trans women will continue transitioning, and i know there are plenty of straight men who will be able to get to know them as women, even if that goes against what they’ve always thought of women as, and will be able to have relationships with them.
this has been a pretty long lol but im just trying to take the opportunity to offer an explanation since most people don’t even attempt to understand where trans people are coming from.
