    Poor Harold Bride. 1st he had to deal with Philips going though tunnel version, not realizing that there's nothing more that they can do (& by this point in the sinking of the Titanic, power is so low, that the wireless no longer works.) Then deal with someone trying to steal Philips' life jacket (who I assume was still knocked out when water finally enters the wireless room. & let's not talk about having a lifeboat landing on top of him!
    He & Lightroller went through heck during Titanic's final moments- & live to tell!

      And then after making onto that upturned lifeboat, he had his feet still in that frigid water which badly injured them, thus making him barely able to climb up the rope latter onto the Carpathia by himself. Then while on the Carpathia, he had his feet bandaged up and rested for a while, then worked together with Harold Cottam to transmit official messages about the sinking to other ships in the area. He and Jack Phillips became good friends with Harold Cottam long before the Titanic’s sinking happened and I can’t imagine how Bride and Cottam must’ve felt to have been seeing each other again after that awful disaster.

    It is thanks to Bride surviving that we have so much knowledge of what had happened in the Marconi Room throughout the sinking. Anyways, this has been a great series and I'm looking forward to Lusitania part 5.

    Great video, Sam; honestly, I do feel sorry for Harold too but I have massive respect for Jack because sacrificing your live to try and save more than over 2,200 people (even though over 700 survived) is more heroic than a fictional superhero could do. You never need powers to save people because the true powers are human instincts, a feeling of care and a sense of duty (or at least in the 1910’s period when it comes to the rules of the sea).
    But honestly, I think if it weren’t for the two men, more lives could’ve been lost.

      In 1912 Bride joined the crew of the RMS Titanic as the junior wireless operator and assistant to Jack Phillips at Belfast, Ireland. Stories have appeared that Bride knew Phillips before the Titanic, but Bride insisted that they had never met before Belfast.

    You should do a video on how the Carpathia's wireless radio operator Harold Cottam gave in to saving the lives of those people too! He had worked a little later than usual and was just in the process of getting ready for bed when he suddenly picked up the distress call Jack Phillips and Harold Bride had sent and his decision to awaken Captain Arthur Henry Rostron and inform him that the Titanic was in distress and needed their help is what got the Carpathia to arrive at the sinking location hours before any other ship and save all of those people. Harold Cottam also happened to have been good friends with Jack Phillips and Harold Bride before the voyage and I can't imagine how Cottam and Bride must've felt to have been seeing each other again after such tragedy and how it was their work along with Jack Phillips work together that helped save the lives of those people.

      @carlosadriantinajerovelazc4338 2 роки тому +1

      It'd be great to see a video on the topic. Now, I'm not a native English speaker, but I think that "searchlight" is pretty much the same as "spotlight". If that's true, then I think it would not have been very useful, because you can only see a small point with the light, while everything outside the lightened area would be harder to spot. I found a video with a simulation on that. I'll provide the link: ua-cam.com/video/RoL7s_qV04w/v-deo.html

    I wonder if Jack Phillips would have been able to survive if he left the wireless room at 1:57 am when Captain Smith relieved them of their duties instead of 2:09 am. I feel like if Jack didn't stay for another 12 minutes then he could have helped lower the last few collapsible lifeboats instead of running to the stern as the water wasn't on the bridge yet.
    If they exited the officers quarters on the port side at this time (which they did later anyways), that would mean that collapsible D would have still been there. Of course Lighttoller wouldn't have let them in but Jack perhaps could have stayed behind and had a shot at surviving on collapsible B instead of moving to the stern and dying for certain.
    Let's also discuss the scenario of them leaving the officers quarters on the starboard side at 1:57 am. Collapsible C would have been just about ready to be lowered and at this time Murdoch would have asked for any men to get onto the lifeboats since there were no women or children left at that part of the deck. In this scenario Jack and Harold would have been almost guaranteed to survive.

    Hey , Sam! I had an idea a few minutes ago that you can do a quick story on a famous shipwreck in my country , Romania. The ship was called "MV E Evanghelia" or "Evanghelia" as we romanians call it. It was a steam cargo ship build in Harland and Wolff in Belfast and launched on 28th of May 1942. The wreck happend on the 15th of October 1968 from a ship failure 1,5 km near Costinesti beach were it now lies , beached on a mound of sand. Aproxmatly 12 hours before the failure , the crew sent a SOS message with the message "Save our Soul" where the ship was in difficulties , the greeks (the ship's crew) got in touch with nearby help , they said their coordinates were somewhere on the Danube river where it was heading twords the shore very fast. The rescue ship "Voinicul" went to the rescue instanley , but when they got there , the ship was nowhere to be found . The full story is on Wikipedia , I'm writing this from the information given there , here is the link : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_E_Evangelia . I know it was not a sunk ship , rather a beached one , but I thought it whould be cool , since it kinda is like the Titanic in way. Hope you will cover this ship when you can.

Now the wreck is one of Costinesti's famous landmarks besides the Sphinx and what not. Also , fun fact , there was a rumour that the ship was transporting oranges , because locals said they saw a ton of oranges on the Black Sea.

      @@mrkipling2201 Oh yes the steel was stolen,given by the giant hole you can see on wreck pictures of it,the oranges,well that's what rumours said,so yeah. I do love the fact it was build in the same exact shipyard as Titanic and her sister ships were built. If you want listen to her history in my native language to have a feel for it's current country,then search it like this(it's optional if you search in romanian or not,you may still find a lot of videos in my language so yeah) : Istoria navei Evanghelia. That's it,you may want to turn on English subtitles if the video lets you do that. I'm here every day if you need extra information,I'm willing to give my knowledge from my 2 visits to the wreck when I was young (now I'm 13 :D). Also,just looked it up even more it's starting to get eaten and get destroyed,oh well,just like Titanic,one day it will dissapear from the Costinesti beach for ever. It's still a mystery to us romanians who it got there in the first place,that's why a video from Sam on it would not be a terrible ideea,since her history is very weird and has quite a bit of mystery behind why the Greeks gave different coordinates every time and when rescue got there,the ship was nowhere to be found. Sam,if you are reading this, pictures for the video if you are planning to do it,this is a Google search method for finding both wreck and original ship images,here is my search,MV E Evanghelia 1942.

    Originally the ship was supposed to carry 48 life boats which was more than enough to save everyone on board that night. But, would they have had enough time to launch all 48 had the carried them?

      I think the ship was designed to carry 64 lifeboats. Thomas Andrews wanted all 64 but his vote was shot down as most feared that the deck would be too cluttered with boats. It's likely that there wouldn't have been enough time to lower all 48 lifeboats if the ship had them, Sam made another video describing that.

      There were only 16 or 24 lifeboats? I am not sure, all I know is that there were not enough lifeboats

    Well I mean you could make the argument they sealed the Titanic’s fate by pissing off the Californian’s wireless operator because he shut down after they told him to “shut up” and “keep out” while they were catching up on passenger messages. Which lead to the Californian wireless operator to shut down for the night.

    • @IsatisAngel
      @IsatisAngel 2 роки тому

      But this night, the crew of the Californian saw the distress flares of un "unknow ship" (most probably the Titanic)... and the captain wouldn't do anything,
      he didn't even want to wake up the radio operator to see if there was a call for help. So for me, it's 50/50 responsibility.
