    Now this is a good video. Two comparable toned amps but also quite different. I really like how you tried to make them sound the same and then like each other. Also I’ve never been a Marshall guy but I’m pretty shocked how much better it sounded than the JJr. Very nice man.

      always has that growl i like the others do not have. I also like it is $1000 cheaper than the Friedman! lol
      So for the cost of that friedman i can own the Marshall head and a 2x12 cab!
      Plus the Marshall uses EL 34's.

    Great comparison video. I own a JJ Jr, and love it. It was weird : with every comparison, your Marshall sounded the way I would have expected the JJ to sound, and vice versa. The Marshall was just clearly better here, even with the caveat that things would likely even up a bit when sitting in a mix. It was more loose, with that great EL34 saturation. And, really importantly, it was just a more inspiring tone. I might have to think about snagging one of these DSL20's now!

  • @angusorvid8840
    @angusorvid8840 Рік тому +3

    I agree that the Friedman is tighter but the Marshall is punchier. I find in my experience that amps that are just a little loser are more enjoyable to play through for long stretches. I owned a Boogie 50 Cal combo which was the tightest amp I ever owned, but I felt it was way too tight most of the time. I was playing hard rock with a 70s classic rock vibe in my 80s club days in L.A. Back then everything was about having a tight and punchy amp, and it was hard to achieve the right balance. What worked most of the time for me was using combos, either a Randall RG 75 solid state, or any number of Marshall JCM combos I borrowed from friends and boosted with a Tube Screamer or SD-1. My JMP stack was just impossible when it came to getting more tightness, which is what drew me to the Boogie combo in the first place way back in 1989. I had a good rapport with many of the soundmen at L.A. clubs because I would mostly use combos and didn't act obnoxious. They got tired of dealing with all these dudes with walls of Marshalls and Laneys who thought they were Eddie even though they were living off the generosity of groupies. Regarding cutting through the mix, yeah, the Friedman would do a better job, but that also depends on the settings. Good demo. Sorry for rambling like an old man. I just dig high gain amps! I have a long history with these contraptions.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  Рік тому +1

      And spoken with clear true experience!!! You did live the golden age in those days with music. These days I don't think the appreciation is there but we don't care about that we just want to rock and roll. Interesting about preferring combos over a half stack. I just go for the wide punchy growl that I can use an overdrive to clean up if needed. Love to hear these stories. Thanks for watching man!

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 Рік тому

      @@DeathMetalDevin I preferred combos, or a combo with an additional 1x12 single cab under it, if I had one handy. I think the best cabs I've ever heard were the Mesa 2x12s. They sounded incredible. Laney also made some good cabs for their 50 watt stacks back then, but the AOR Pro Tube Lead series with all the boost knobs that they produced around '86-'88 were notoriously unreliable and the 20 decibel bass boost only made them muddy. That was just a bit of a rough spot for Laney, who went back to making solid amps shortly after that period when they went back to chicken head knobs.

    • @DeathMetalDevin
      @DeathMetalDevin  Рік тому +1

      @@angusorvid8840 I've seen the AORs around and played one at a shop and wasn't impressed. I have a mesa 2x12 and absolutely vouche for it.

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 Рік тому

      @@DeathMetalDevin Mesas are far superior to Laneys. There is no contest. The issue with the AORs other than reliability was the mud. It had a 20 decibel bass boost that was so notoriously bad that a common mod was simply to get rid of it and turn it into a more standard gain boost. Now, modded AORs that were modded along these lines sounded absolutely great. The problem was they were still very unreliable amps. Laney eventually improve the line drastically about the time they started using chicken head knobs and eliminated the pull-boost knobs. For me, clarity, reliability, and simplicity are the most important variables in putting a rig together. If I had money to burn and could get any amp, I'd either get a Soldano SLO or Bogner Ecstasy. Superb amps. I like Diezels and VHT/Fryette Pitbulls too, but they lean a bit too metal for me these days. I lean more towards 70s classic rock. I love the old Michael Schenker tone, but with a boost here and there.

I did own a Friedman BE OD pedal for a bit and it was a good pedal. Worked well with the DSL and a Fender Bassbreaker. The DSL gets some very good JCM like tones, but to my ears I think they sound a little better. I wasn't a big fan of the JCMs in the 80s, but I did love the Jubilee and almost bought a 50 watt which sounded perfect. But I opted for a JMP 100 stack and boosted it with an MXR, Rat, Boss, Tube Screamer, etc. One good thing about Marshalls is that just about every repair guy knows how to work on them.
