Just bought myself a Runt 20 for $999. I'm in a cover band that plays everything from Elvis to Motley Crue and Def Lep, so I really love its versatility 🤘
I gotta say kudos to Dave. He really made these amps quite distinguishing from each other. That all do their own thing quite well without being too close to each other. Especially the taco n Shirley. For 2 Marshall type tones, each fantastic representations of the mark and very different sounding.
I studied these amps from one end to the other and I'm glad to say I bought the JJ. It is so fitting for the way I play plus the variety of tones you can get from this amp is amazing. He didn't mention it but there are some small hidden bright switches on it that really bring out the highs. It also includes a pedal for the channel switching on the unit. Pick the one that suits you best, but for around $1,500.00 you can't go wrong.
Great comparison. My take away: Runt 20 most versatile jack of all trades master of none; Pink Taco optimized for that classic Marshall plexi sound but maybe better; Dirty Shirley if you want a led zeppelin, or classic lower gain sound; and the JJ for that high gain, metal. Each would do any. Great video and comparrisons.
Just picked up a runt for $800. Great little amp. Loud as he'll and clean tone with a little gain is where I like it. Using it with a 64 Es335 reissue. Really nice!
That LP custom is very nice. I own the 1994 wine red custom. And it was my favorite guitar. I have around. I love the ebony fretboards over the road's wood. I love the fully decorated headstock and the triple binding down the neck in the body. It's just an awesome guitar and the sound man. Nothing sounds better. Nothing has more crunch, man. And nothing has more charisma than a West. Paul just awesome. I don't care what year it is if it's a Les. Paul custom a real one, not a chibson, It's an awesome guitar.!!!
@@Hoscitt I don’t have the junior, but I have the 100 watt and boy does it rule. In comparison I have a PRS Archon, Peavey 5150 block letter, and a handwired Plexi clone. The Friedman is def my favorite of the bunch. Can get super heavy or can do the classic rock and 90s rock Marshall tones really well. Only probably now is that I want more Friedmans
It's Not Love intro by Dokken with the Runt! I think the Runt is the most versatile of the bunch. The Pink Taco has an impressive high gain sound but after a while you need some more versatility.
I love the high gain tone of the pink taco. It really sounds like the rock and metal of the late 70s,80,and 90s. Just wish it had a clean channel as well.
great demo playing. they all sound amazing. sweet custom paul helps ;) thumbs up. the pink taco really sounded best to me, the shirly seemed friendlier but darker, runt did it all and the jj was too fizzy for me. my amp is a 5150ii and dialing out fizz, but keeping it high gain is a skill.
You guys always just get the best tones out of gear. Andertons is a channel I love the personalities on but god dam they always have such shrill, thin, fizzy tones with no body or tone to them. Onces you guys open back up fully I'm making the 6 hour treck to get myself either a fridman or Dr Z amp and cab.
As always, Jack knocks it outta the park. Kudos, bro'. Runt for me. Not sure why... Maybe the way it compresses? Anyway, really dig that one. Especially clean. Would love to see a demo of the Buxom Betty, both with a Lester and a strat. Cheers
Yep lovin me some Friedman tone from all them tonal palettes. All them riffs from your demo is why I love the guitar and players from my era of guitar gods
Well the runt is a close contender with the dirty shirley. Amazing for a price that is still reasonable. There are all great sounding. No winner here they all have their sound. It's up to the player and personal taste...
Based on another review video, I was 100% certain I wanted the JJ. However, in this video it sounded buzzy. Now I'm leaning towards the PT-20 based on how it sounded here, but I'm not sure. Was really liking the versatility of the JJ so I'm feeling torn now.
Was in the same boat. I was sure I'd love the PT-20, but decided that 2 channels would be better for gigging and pedals so I pulled the trigger on a JJ- Jr. I think the BE mode gets me close enough to PT-20 sound so I'm pretty happy
I’ve got the mini ds and the jj jr. the jj jr is a beast but there is just something special about the mini ds. It may be one of the all time great Amps.
I've seen the absolute best products demoed by your store and none of them can match your playing. You look like you couldn't be older than 25 but you sound like you've been a master for at least 25 years. 💪
I think Friedman has the best 20 watt amps and wish the new Marshall’s were better. I like the overdrive tone of the PT but the clean channel of the Runt. For me I think the JJ sounds over saturated, maybe the tone is different with less gain? Can you get that PT/jcm800ish tone from the Runt?
Not sure if you ended up getting either but the non jbe mode on the jj gets you pretty close to the pt. It’s just the normal BE channel when that switch is not engaged.
@@MrMattsac232 Hi, I did buy a JJ Jr a few months ago. I'm really happy I went with that over the PT. I like that it can do higher gain and the clean channel is much better than I expected. It runs much hotter than my Mesa, but it's a very good amp.
One thing I must say...those amps are set WAY LOUD. No way that is a true "room sound". Not that any Friedman doesn't sound great at low volumes but...crank them up and they are otherworldly! The tones you are hearing in this video are sent through a direct signal chain of some sort...have to be. Amps that cranked would be feeding back all over the place! Correct me if I'm mistaken...still, a GREAT video and INCREDIBLE playing too! Friedmans are TOPS in my book. Period.
yes that's true, the most important element of getting a great tone is to play the amp at a decent volume, it is not necessary to use a lot of gain just the right amount of volume.
I noticed this also. Those masters at that volume have be being recorded direct to get this sound. I normally keep my Friedman’s very low and they sound great.
would be better if these were all 30-40 watt amps. I just find 20 watters lack balls. Had the Mesa 25/5 head and sold it quickly. Thinking about getting the small box 50 watt combo and matching 1 12 cab
Hello, thanks for the nice shootout, personally I found the sound of the JJ absolutely amazing! I have one question though, is it loud enough to gig with? I would really like to see a 50W version...
@@PeachGuitars how does the cab SIM work with effects?.. my understanding is the direct out will only run dry without any effects added, is that correct?
Pink Taco absolutely slays 🤘
My favorite was all of them
The Dirty Shirley is still definitely my favorite Friedman out of the range. It's got that Marshall British bark without being overly saturated.
With the BE-OD Pedal .. Soooth ..
Just bought myself a Runt 20 for $999. I'm in a cover band that plays everything from Elvis to Motley Crue and Def Lep, so I really love its versatility 🤘
That Les Paul Custom is insane. It looks so much like Randy’s. If Gibson didn’t price their VOS or M2M models so much it’d be MINE!
Really love the Dean you're playing at the opening of the video!
😂 well played, sir.
11:45 Runt
15:57 jj

Its a les paul custom
@@draper858 This video was posted the day after news broke of Gibson's trademark lawsuit against Dean.
All are great amps. That playing and tone during the first PT segment is just insane. Wow.
Pink taco sounds so unbelievably good. I only wish it also had a clean channel.
You can get one now just add a UAFX Dream 65 or UAFX Ruby in 4 cable mode to your pedal board and BOOM a clean channel.
