  • It's March 2000 and i'm in Croydon. The tram system has been constructed and we see a tram pass by but is under test. On the bus front there are plenty of Metrobuses, including MkII M 1441, and Olympians and a Leyland Titan on route 194. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Mkl Metrobuses galore. They definitely have the most distinctive noises, and best styling.

To be really honest now, Croydon seems to have got really run down but I still have really good memories of it as a small kid.

V nostalgic.Croydon as I remember it,when still thriving, and not the run down murder capital, with closed shops and graffiti everywhere you look,as it is today.

It was a very effective update. London requested them to continue with the mark 1 beyond 1981 and what LT wanted they got!

When first unveiled, MCW said there would be only their version of a Metrobus, take it or leave it! London Transport came along and said they'd be interested but with changes to suit them....... MCW caved in and bult them to LT spec.... lol Mind you, they did sell LT 1442 of them so it was a good choice......

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus They actually gained sales from Titan delays.
It didn't go all their way however. No deliveries in 1982, necessitating layoffs and had to share with Titans in 83 and 84. After 1985 they had to rely on smaller orders and the Hong Kong market, but went defunct in 89.
The Metrobus was a success in anyone's language, some second hand ex Hong Kong open toppers a regular sight in Sydney for 10 years.

You crammed a lot into 7½ minutes.
A cameo by an LS in 2000(!), Olympians galore including a Voith gearbox example, and what looks to be mark 2 demonstrator M1441 (couldn't quite read the fleet number) .
I happened to watch this video of what 1441 looks like of late today after months since I last watched it.
    ua-cam.com/video/63X9RbHx6uA/v-deo.html.
It sounds mechanically healthy apart from slipping reverse gear!

Yes, it was M 1441. At one time a friend in Wigan owned it but sold it on for further preservation. Croydon was always mega busy, buses everywhere!
