  • ...was taking a friend of mine up for his very first flight in a small airplane, and thought we would go for a $ 100.00 hamburger on a nice Sunday afternoon. Shortly into the flight, I started getting warning messages on my PFD and quickly decided to abort and return to the field.....Thanks for Watching...EYZ

Omg you fooled me! I thought Stefan Drury got a Diamond or something. (VH-EYZ from Australia). I love DA40's and miss flying them.

Great video and solid, conservative decision-making when you saw the low coolant alert. Hopefully it ends up just being the coolant level sensor. Nice monitoring of engine instruments for any rising temperatures..."it's a very unforgiving hobby" - absolutely right!

Totally the correct call to turn around... good job. Monday-morning-quarterback suggestion: maybe maintain your altitude until all the way over the numbers at the airport. Keep up the good work and entertaining videos! Wayne (DA40 KSBA)

Completely agree....when I watched the video after the fact, I was thinking to myself that I had 4500' when the problem presented, and I should have held that altitude until I was closer to the airport, just in case I lost my engine.........my instructors words were ringing in my head...."altitude is your friend" !! Thanks for watching !

Looks like it was just a defective sensor. They did a check of the coolant system, pressurized it and found no leaks but even with full coolant the message persisted….so they will be replacing the sensor. Looks like we were never in any danger but still stand by my conservative decision making!!

I had the same issue in a DA42 a few years back. Right engine showed a low coolant level caution on the engine page while upwind, after departure. It stopped when everything came up to temps while I was being vectored to return. Coolant level was full upon visual inspection after landing. Level sensor was the issue. Great job keeping pax positive!

Quite often it happens when the engine isn't at temp and the coolant pump hasn't switched on. Usually goes once you apply some decent power. That being said I have also had air bubbles in the coolant system. Completly inhibited the coolant system and I had to shutdown at the hold point due to the engine getting too hot. Long story short, if it pops up in flight, go home. Seems to be more common in the NG than the TDI.

Excellent video and perfect example of how a situation like this should be handled. Hope it turns out to be a minor sensor issue and look forward to an update as there isn't much DA-40NG content on here

@@diamondeyz6333 Good to hear. Better safe than sorry. There's a UA-cam pilot who gets those same warnings, even though nothing's wrong. Only his is for another system. I think his is fuel pressure low. His handle is shortfield, I think.

We have 3 NG's at our flight school. one of them have the same CAS message as yours pop up for a whole year... finally a week ago after my flight someone's walk around coolant was found on the ground. they're taking a look at it.

Hey... have a new DA40NG delivered in March... had EXACTLY the same thing happen. A few pings.. then gone... no leaks ... everything seemed OK... then a few days later... same thing. I took it to James Spearman in Tennessee ... they opened it.. added about 1oz of coolant and "burped" it... that seems to have solved the problem. I didnt not start happening until about 100 hobbs hours... now I have flown another 100 hobbs... and the problem is still gone... There is also a story on the diamond aviators forum... he had a really slow leak.. and was loosing... so you should look for that as well.

That is reassuring: "nothing to worry about..... it the first time it is happening to me..." :) But good job, always stay on the safe side, and go back, instead of risking of getting in more troubles. Guess it was a faulty sensor?

You can drive a car every day for 100 thousand miles and more with just oil changes and tire replacement and never have a bad sensor Or even a genuine problem of any kind yet a super expensive plane with tight maintenance schedules and aerospace quality components has a bad sensor. Also using the tablet for checklists etc, what do you do when the sun angles make it impossible to read?

So far, I haven't run into a situation where I couldn't see the screen on the iPad, but with the G1000 Nxi system, the iPad is really only there as a back up....pretty much everything I need, I can get from the panel.

@@diamondeyz6333 A reason for my concern is in local region there are general aviation plane crashes with and without injuries/fatalities over the decades and initial news reports have indicated mechanical troubles. I have wondered for years what is going on given the small number of gen aviation planes outbthere.
