- Super Smash Bros is a series that never stops looking for new ways to improve movement. After all, the better you can control your character, the more likely you are to beat your opponent. But, somewhere along the way the line between competitive viability and style has become more and more blurred. Smash Bros Melee set the bar as high as it could be, with nigh unlimited movement options at your fingertips. But, with each subsequent game we have found movement more and more difficult to exploit. Today, Super Smash Bros Ultimate offers us arguably the least flexible movement engine to date. And yet, that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have options to navigate this. See, as that cost of action goes up, we find that doing nothing at all holds more and more value. And while there is always a place for schmovement in your highlight reels, it may not be the best choice if you're trying to maximize your odds of winning. Join me in exploring the empty space between your options, and how doing nothing can be used to a greater effect than doing anything else when used in just the right ways.

My ZSS and Falcon in a nutshell. Once I get a read I vanish and brutally punish like my name sake. I then use what I learn from my interactions to try to mix up and attack. Maybe if we all simultaneously stand still in every tourney for the rest of ultimate’s life, sakurai will add back some movement tech to see something more normal than scarecrow standoffs

Side note, despite the unlimited movement options in Melee, the concepts in this video apply 10000% in Melee as well. Consider your 'dash dancing' neutral as the space to do 'nothing', and the analogy is the same.
This is legitimately good advice. But its kinda sad that doing nothing is the only way to move without limiting options drastically.
I dunno, I like how it changes the pace of the game more towards the mental side and less of the execution of rapid inputs. Tho I also am not very fast so of course I'm biased towards the style that's better for me!

@@Glyphmoney I would say that at a high level of gameplay the mental side is still in full effect, and the advanced movement options allow much more freedom and creativity in how to outplay your opponent.
@@graxtheswampgoblinarchmage5356 I agree. Its exactly why ambiguous movement like wavedashing and moonwalking are mind games asf as well. Can't tell me ice's movement against armada isn't a prime example of mental game in ambiguous movement too.
Please never stop with this kind of informative, competitive and high level content. It's a refreshing breeze in the current UA-cam meta of mostly clickbait reaction video's which don't learn the player anything. I loved this video, keep it up!

for a channel this small, your content and execution of your videos is outstanding, very good topic covered i actually don’t see many people talking about at all. you went into very good detail and i feel like you explained it very well so less skilled players will understand what high/top level players deal with, all with a very appealing editing format i couldn’t help but keep noticing. simply earned a like out of respect and sharing it with friends who would definitely use this and explained this topic way better to them than i would normally

This tactic can also be referred to sashi-kaeshi (reactive play). With dashes being committal in Ultimate, standing there gives you access to the most options in the game. Never forget that. So if you've conditioned your opponent into the same rhythm, just standing there or feinting an opponent can be so powerful.

I’ve done this forever in every fighting game. Waiting, standing, overshooting ariels to where they will be rather than where they are, and the best one, purposely feeding false information in neutral then taking advantage of their counter play to the false information you gave them. Also ariels in place are op.
Lol my fav is the armada classic, slightly approaching aerials, not meant to hit, but to carve out stage positioning and still be safe yet punish approaches

Congratz, you've boiled down how i've managed to get to Elite Smash with Puff. Aside from doing nothing, tactical stalling is also a pretty key feature of my character when doing stuff like mixing up my recovery or stalling out Joker's Arsene.
It's also why charging limit with Cloud is so nuts. It allows Cloud to force the opponent to make an option.

I feel like, as an Incineroar main, this advice is something you can really easily miss as a character with tons of movement options. Any time you commit yourself to a movement option, you're losing reaction time. Not moving is always the most flexible choice. Great vid, great observations, and incredible editing!

I love how just standing in online is the best when spawning because everyone are only rushing
I notice this with the people I face online, that they aren’t aware of my habits that are based off of theirs, but particularly my habits based on theirs, of which they’re meant to out play there’s. But they continue to stick with their typical normal habits which is costing them stocks, percent, and neutral. I believe that having some self-awareness can help, along with their problem-solving skills. If mashing neutral B one hundred times in a row isn’t working maybe mixing up timing or using it in certain occasions might actually work.
The production quality of your videos is already incredibly unmatched by most channels. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say to never stop making videos. You have the skillset and potential to become a huge success, and I personally recommend making your videos personable by getting on front of the camera and looking your audience in the eye. Your videos are memorable - give the audience a face to associate that with.
Well done man. I've been playing this since it came out and you have me a completely new perspective.

Its deffinitly Top Tier Editing, flawless and sums up with the Video but its nothing i would call the _best_ some smash edits are just criminaly underrated like this one. Compared to some basic mainstream edits, which doesnt have to be a bad thing but since its about editing, ya.

I've probably been doing nothing for years now, and it works seriously well. People are conditioned to thinking everyone has some panic option, while they try to read it I will just wait it out and punish. Great and informative video, keep up the good work :)
damn dude, if I knew you were making this video I would have given you the plethora of clips I have standing just outside Marth F-Smash range and doing nothing. I have actually been using "do nothing" as a mixup option for a while now! PEOPLE REALLY DON'T EXPECT YOU TO NOT DI AND DROP COMBOS! So many missed knees... Doing nothing as an option has been a core part of my gameplay for a long time(since Smash 4 at least), and it is a really good option and has probably been a reason why I have won a few of my matches for so long. I hope more people use it.

I retired from competitive smash but whenever I do play again? This is one of things I do when I do decide to play with friends. I always see my friends just moving constantly and throwing out moves not knowing they're giving me all the information I need to slowly but surely beat them. I'm not saying I'm a good player far from it but, these kinds of simple "tech" is what keeps me above most mid level players even during retirement.
I'll share this video with my friends who are currently still pursuing getting better at competitive smash. I'm sure they'll benefit from it a lot, I enjoy seeing them do well especially in tournaments.
This is an absolutely incredible video and it’s teaching an incredible concept as well. I hope players can understand this well and apply it to their game
