This is definitely one of my favorites this year. We have such a good time with it. The measuring stuff...this isn't Warhammer. We just take a card, casually check, and go. Our games have always been exciting, and the length isn't an issue once you get going. The turns go quickly and everyone can't wait to upgrade their ship and get new abilities. The game is random, but there are many ways to mitigate bad luck and still have fun with the game. Too bad many people will see this and avoid the game.

I agree 100% You've very accurately described the way I experience the game as well.
I love Tom's videos, and what he does for the Board Game community, but I surely don't agree with his take on many games. He loves a lot of games that I think are terrible, and he dislikes games (like this), that I think are a lot of fun.

KAM1138a And that's great! That's the point of gaming! I certainly don't think (or even want!) people to agree with me. I'm just giving you my opinion, and hopefully enough information to see if you want to get the game.

I totally agree. You offer your honest opinion, which is all anyone can do.
In this case, I happen to disagree, and think this is a really neat game, despite the randomness.

When it comes to choose pirates or upgrades you draft 3 cards and take one. Random, but not so random.

I had a lot of fun playing this as a two player game. I can imagine playing with many more this would be much more unwieldy. Yes it's random, but there were lots of options (again, with two players) to screw with each other and put your ships into position to do cool things each adventure. I don't agree at all that the measuring is fiddly - we ballparked it using cards, not the ruler (as ignacy suggested). Oh no - you bumped the box? Big deal. so dice shifted slightly. Are those two dice really touching? Meh, close enough, go for it! Oh no, I didn't draw a green loot tile - but I got a different one that I can still do something fun with. Seriously, play this a little looser and have fun. It IS fun. It'll never be my favorite game, but I still like it quite a bit.
Oh well, might just be me, but I'm glad I picked it up!

I have played this game 5 times and it seems that smarter play has won every time. It has some randomness, but more strategy AND playing against the other humans at the table than you might expect after a glance. The PACING of the game slows way down once the dice are in the box, but once you get into its rhythm, it is hugely fun.

  • @KAM1138a

This game doesn't click for Tom, which is fine.
But I think he's overstating the "randomness" in several cases. The dice dropping is definitely random, and there are times when certain ships won't be able to do enough to alter that. But there are other times when the player's choices most definitely will alter that. The order in which you take those actions will make a difference--even starting from a random drop.
In terms of the loot and the upgrades--not nearly as random in effect. There are only a handful of loot types to draw, and with upgrades you draw 3 and keep 1--also moderating the randomness. So, not nearly some wild uncontrolled thing as it's being made out to be in that area.
It is true that the game isn't super short, but I didn't feel it was overly long either. It's not an epic game, but a game that I think can be a lot of fun for sure.

anyways, seems like once you play a few times, it'd be a breeze and if it's fun, nothing wrong with a light hearted hour

I'm a huge board game fan. Been collecting for years. I am all for a balanced review, which I feel Tom gave, but I would like to hear a suggestion of what would be better choice. Many people view these how to play/walk thru videos and are looking for the next game to buy and try. Please put a recommendation for a better game to try in the comments or video notes if your general opinion of game play is negative. Many people want to get value for the money they spend on board games. Thanks for the walk thru, Tom. Thanks to Coolstuffinc.com for the $8 game. It was definately worth $8. Not sure I'd be so happy if I paid $60. Too much bad luck results in a negative game experience for the game player. That's the scenerio I fear with my family. No one wants to spend 50 mins doing almost nothing only to cash in loot and get crew members that aren't very useful and a ship parts that still can't get you into the action.

I am a superfan of Ignacy's work, but i 100% agree with your review Tom. It should've been a longer gamers game with less luck or a quick filler game. Now it is somewhere in between and for 60+ minutes game i want strategy and "balanced" luck

I wonder if the Angry Ocean Expansion would make it any better? The extra island pieces come into play with 3 mini expansions. :) Looks like it would make it a complete game.

Hitting on all carbines? Is that a conglomeration of "firing on all pistons" and "hitting all the right notes"? :)

I would probably house rule a trading phase to mitigate the random nature of obtaining new items.

It is. Just because Tom is knocking this game, doesn't you wouldn't enjoy it.
I bought this game, and really think it's interesting, even if there is one major element that is very random. I think Tom's discounting the fact that the choices you make still matter a lot.

  • @TheGrooves

I totally agree with you, Tom. Plus, all that measuring and the dice used... kinda makes it look like an abstract game.

  • @nanorider426

It reminds me of Pirates of the Spanish Main. The minis were gorgeous(!) but the rules were....down in the toilet. Where were the rules in the game? But this game has rules; you can go to port and buy upgrades and - random? Random, random, random. *sigh* I agree with Tom.

  • @TapCat
    @TapCat 9 років тому

This game is apparently designed for people who thought that dice games weren't random enough and who crave the "fun" of measuring the movement of miniatures without having the benefit of looking at cool minis. Ignacy is a very talented designer and if others enjoy playing this then I wish them well, but I've rarely seen a game that appealed to me less.

All that Tom has said and the thing that everyonen has to look into the box (probably standing up and cramping around it for better view). No, not for me. I want a flat board laying on the table when i play.

  • @rockxhero

I think I'd agree with you Tom. When I 1st saw this game I thought it looked cool & intriguing, but when a player basically drops dice & the game seems to play itself (other than the choice of ranged combat), I became less interested.
Looks like another Luchador: Mexican Wrestling which was also a dressed up dice game.

Thanks for the review. I was turned off this game from the very first preview I saw, but, for reasons others may have been attracted to it. I only care who the designer is so far as to hint at what the game might play like. All designers will miss on a design at some point. Rolling the dice in the box lid seemed weird to me. All those pieces. Putting your ship together where a couple pieces went together puzzle like, but, then the sails you just lay on the ship. All the pieces crowded to just below the marketplace cards. Weirdest turn off of all though for me was the title. Too gimmicky; too much alliteration. With so many games coming out now never mind what's come out earlier this year, or even, the recent years before that the bar for quality games is set so high now that the consumer can easily pass on so-so games and still have a ridiculous amount of games to choose from.
